Our take on travel insurance for the Revolut Metal

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Picture a fever in Bangkok that turns into a hospital admission. On Revolut's free Standard plan you would pay that bill yourself. The paid Metal plan is different: it bundles a Tokio Marine travel insurance policy that pays overseas emergency medical and dental treatment up to S$200,000 per adult, including COVID-19, plus emergency evacuation back to Singapore up to actual cost with no dollar cap. The revolut metal travel insurance also covers baggage up to S$5,000 and baggage delay after 6 hours, but there is no trip cancellation, no flight-delay cash and no personal liability cover. Two conditions decide whether you are actually insured: your Metal plan must be active, and at least half the cost of your return travel ticket must be paid from your Revolut account before you leave Singapore. Each trip is capped at 90 days, and pre-existing medical conditions are excluded. The S$200,000 medical limit is genuine cover but modest next to the S$1,000,000 or more of a standalone Singapore policy. Treat it as a real medical backstop for short overseas trips, not a full replacement for a standalone plan that would add cancellation, a higher medical limit and cover for conditions you already have.

What works on travel
  • Overseas emergency medical and dental up to S$200,000 per adult, with COVID-19 treated like any other illness
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation to Singapore paid up to actual cost, arranged by a 24-hour assistance line
  • Baggage cover up to S$5,000 and baggage delay reimbursement after a 6-hour hold
  • Cover activates automatically once at least half the return fare is charged to your Revolut account, with no separate opt-in form
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation, no flight-delay cash benefit and no personal liability cover, so many common trip mishaps are on you
  • The S$200,000 medical limit is modest next to the S$1,000,000 or more of a standalone Singapore policy, and pre-existing conditions are excluded
  • Each trip is capped at 90 days, and you must be ordinarily resident in Singapore to qualify
  • The cover rides on a paid subscription of about S$21.99 a month, roughly S$264 a year, so it is only worthwhile if you already want the Metal plan

What does Revolut Metal Travel Insurance actually cover?

The S$100,000 headline is the accidental death sum, not an overseas medical limit. Everyday illness and injury are handled by the separate medical benefit, not this one.

Deductible : No deductible

Personal accident cover is a lump sum paid if a travel accident causes your death or permanent disablement (a lasting loss such as losing a limb or your sight). The Metal policy pays up to S$100,000 for accidental death or permanent total disablement, and S$50,000 for the loss of one limb or the sight of one eye. It applies to an accident during a trip outside Singapore. This is the accident sum, not a general medical limit, and it pays nothing for ordinary illness.

Recommended : SGD 1,000,000

What's covered
  • Accidental death overseas: S$100,000
  • Permanent total disablement, loss of two limbs or sight of both eyes: S$100,000
  • Loss of one limb or the sight of one eye: S$50,000
What's not covered
  • Accidental death or disablement of anyone under 16
  • Manual or hazardous work, professional or extreme sports
  • Self-harm, illness or natural causes, war and terrorism
The S$200,000 limit is per insured adult. A dental sub-limit of S$2,000 applies within this benefit, and treatment can continue in Singapore for 14 days up to S$2,500.

Deductible : No deductible

This is the benefit you claim on when illness or injury strikes abroad. It reimburses reasonable overseas emergency medical and dental treatment up to S$200,000 per adult, and it explicitly covers being diagnosed with COVID-19 or another pandemic illness. MediShield Life and Integrated Shield Plans do not pay for overseas leisure treatment, so this cap is your real backstop. It is genuine cover, but S$200,000 is modest next to the S$1,000,000 or more a standalone Singapore policy offers, and pre-existing conditions are excluded.

Recommended : SGD 1,000,000

What's covered
  • Overseas emergency medical treatment up to S$200,000 per adult
  • COVID-19 and other pandemic illness treated like any other illness
  • Emergency dental treatment up to S$2,000
  • Continuation of treatment in Singapore for up to 14 days, up to S$2,500
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing medical conditions and pregnancy
  • Non-emergency, routine or elective treatment
  • Private care where suitable public care is available
A COVID-19 evacuation is included. This benefit pays the transport; the hospital treatment itself is paid under the S$200,000 medical benefit.

Deductible : No deductible

If local hospitals cannot treat you, the insurer's team arranges and pays to move you to the nearest suitable facility or home to Singapore. Emergency evacuation, medical repatriation and repatriation of remains are all paid up to actual cost, with no fixed dollar cap. An air ambulance from Bali or Bangkok can run S$50,000 to S$120,000, so an uncapped benefit matters here. A 24-hour assistance line coordinates it, and a friend or family member can be flown to your bedside up to S$5,000 if you are hospitalised for more than 120 hours.

What's covered
  • Emergency evacuation to the nearest suitable medical facility: actual cost
  • Medical repatriation to Singapore: actual cost
  • Repatriation of remains: actual cost
  • Transport to bedside for one visitor: up to S$5,000
What's not covered
  • Transport the insurer did not authorise or arrange
  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Travel against government or medical advice
The S$2,000 dental figure is a sub-limit within the S$200,000 overseas medical and dental benefit, not an extra amount on top of it.

Deductible : No deductible

If you break a tooth, lose a filling or develop a dental infection during your trip, the policy reimburses emergency dental treatment up to S$2,000. This sits inside the overseas medical benefit rather than being a separate pot of money. It is for sudden dental emergencies abroad, not routine check-ups or cosmetic work.

What's covered
  • Emergency treatment for a broken tooth or dental injury
  • Treatment for a dental infection or a lost filling
What's not covered
  • Routine, cosmetic or planned dental work
  • Treatment that could reasonably wait until you return home

No hospital cash allowance. This benefit is not included with this card. There is no daily cash payment while you are hospitalised overseas.

What's not covered
  • Overseas hospital daily cash is not a benefit of this card

No trip cancellation. This benefit is not included with this card. Prepaid flights, hotels, and tours are not reimbursable if you cancel. A standalone travel insurance policy is required for this coverage.

What's not covered
  • Trip cancellation is not a benefit of this card

No trip curtailment cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost to fly home early after a family emergency and resume a trip is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • Trip curtailment is not a benefit of this card

No travel disruption cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Extra accommodation and transport from a trip disruption are the cardholder's responsibility.

What's not covered
  • Travel disruption is not a benefit of this card

No travel delay cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Meals, accommodation, and transport during a delay are the cardholder's responsibility.

What's not covered
  • Travel delay is not a benefit of this card

No missed connection cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost of alternative transport after a missed connection is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • Missed connection is not a benefit of this card
The S$1,000 high-value-items cap is the key limit to know: cameras, watches, jewellery and electronics are covered only up to S$1,000 in total.

Deductible : No deductible

If your baggage is lost, damaged or stolen during your trip, the policy pays up to S$5,000 to repair or replace it. Everyday items are covered on production of receipts, and payouts are reduced by 10% for each year since purchase, up to a maximum of 50%. All high-value items together, such as jewellery, cameras and electronics, share a single S$1,000 cap, so an expensive laptop or watch is only lightly covered.

What's covered
  • Lost, damaged or stolen baggage up to S$5,000
  • Items without a receipt reimbursed at 50% of replacement cost
What's not covered
  • All high-value items share a single S$1,000 cap
  • Money, documents and business property
  • Items left unattended in a public place or an unlocked vehicle
The no-receipt daily limit of S$200 applies to your outbound trip only. Keep receipts to claim the higher S$400 daily amount.

Deductible : No deductible

If an airline or other carrier delays your checked baggage for at least 6 hours, the policy reimburses the essentials you buy while you wait. With receipts you can claim up to S$400 a day; without receipts the limit is S$200 a day, and only on your outbound journey. It is a reimbursement for a short gap, not a payout for the bag's full value.

What's covered
  • Essential purchases after a baggage delay of 6 hours or more
  • Up to S$400 a day with receipts
What's not covered
  • Delays on your return to Singapore for the no-receipt limit
  • Items beyond reasonable essentials

No travel documents cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost to replace a lost passport or reclaim fraudulent card use overseas is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • Loss of travel documents is not a benefit of this card

No personal liability cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Legal liability for injury to others or property damage overseas is uninsured, and claims commonly reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.

What's not covered
  • Personal liability overseas is not a benefit of this card

How to claim on your Revolut Metal travel insurance

1

Step 1: Notify Tokio Marine as soon as possible

Start your claim with Tokio Marine within the notice period in the certificate, commonly 30 days of the incident. Only expenses charged to the Revolut Metal can be reimbursed where the benefit requires the fare to be charged to the card.

2

Step 2: Gather the proof Tokio Marine needs

Keep the card statement showing the fare was charged, your boarding passes, and for a medical claim the doctor's report and receipts. For delayed or lost baggage, get a Property Irregularity Report from the airline before leaving the airport; for theft, file a police report within 24 hours.

3

Step 3: Escalate to FIDReC if a fair claim is denied

If Tokio Marine rejects a claim you believe is valid, escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, within 6 months of the insurer's final reply. FIDReC independently mediates disputes between consumers and financial institutions in Singapore.

FAQ

What people ask about the Revolut Metal

  • Travel insurance is not part of Revolut's free Standard plan. It comes with the paid plans: both Premium and Metal include the same Tokio Marine travel insurance policy for Singapore accountholders. Metal is the top tier and adds perks like higher cashback and lounge access on top of the shared travel cover. If you are on the free plan and want the medical and evacuation cover described here, you would need to upgrade to a paid plan. Always confirm your plan is active before you travel, because the cover stops the moment the plan lapses.
  • There is no separate opt-in form to fill in. Two things must be true before you leave Singapore: your Metal plan is active, and at least 50% of the total cost of your return travel ticket has been paid from your Revolut account. If your flights are part of a travel package, charging the full package cost to the account satisfies this. Book your trip on another card, or pay less than half the fare from Revolut, and you may not be covered. The cover then runs for that trip up to a maximum of 90 days.
  • Yes. The policy reimburses reasonable overseas emergency medical and dental treatment up to S$200,000 per adult, which is the benefit you would claim on for a hospital admission abroad. This matters because MediShield Life, Singapore's national health insurance, does not pay for overseas leisure treatment. The limit is real but modest: a serious admission in the US or Europe can exceed S$200,000, and a standalone travel policy typically offers S$1,000,000 or more. Pre-existing conditions are excluded.
  • Yes, and this is one of the stronger benefits. Emergency evacuation, medical repatriation and repatriation of remains are all paid up to actual cost, with no fixed dollar cap. If you are seriously ill or injured somewhere that cannot treat you, the 24-hour assistance line arranges and pays to move you to the nearest suitable hospital or home to Singapore. An air ambulance can cost S$50,000 to S$120,000, so uncapped cover is worth having. You must call the assistance line so it can authorise the transport, or the benefit may not pay.
  • No. This is the biggest gap in the Metal travel insurance. If you have to cancel a trip before you go, or cut it short after a family emergency, the policy pays nothing towards your prepaid flights, hotels or tours. There is also no flight-delay cash benefit and no personal liability cover. If cancellation cover matters to you, a standalone Singapore travel policy adds it from a low single-trip premium and is the reliable way to protect prepaid bookings.
  • Yes, on the medical side. Being diagnosed with COVID-19 or another pandemic illness overseas is treated like any other illness under the S$200,000 emergency medical benefit, and evacuation for a COVID-19 illness is covered too. What is not covered is cancelling or cutting short a trip because of COVID-19, since the policy has no cancellation benefit at all. So a positive test that lands you in a Bangkok hospital is covered, but a positive test that forces you to cancel before you fly is not.
  • Yes. Each trip is covered for a maximum of 90 days; travel longer than that and the later days are uninsured. You must also be ordinarily resident in Singapore, meaning a citizen, permanent resident or valid pass holder who meets the residency tests set out in the policy. The personal accident benefit does not pay for the accidental death or disablement of anyone under 16. There is no separate upper age cap stated for the medical cover in the policy wording, but confirm your eligibility before you rely on it.
  • The policy is underwritten by Tokio Marine Insurance Singapore and administered by AWP Services Singapore, trading as Allianz Travel. For a medical emergency or evacuation, call the 24-hour line on +65 6995 1118 first so it can authorise treatment or transport. For everything else, file online at the Allianz claims portal or call +65 6280 0316, and submit baggage or delay claims within 30 days of returning home with receipts and any police or carrier report. If a claim is denied and you disagree, you can escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, which handles disputes between consumers and financial firms in Singapore.
  • For many trips, yes. The Metal plan gives you a real S$200,000 medical benefit, uncapped evacuation and some baggage cover, which is a solid backstop for a short overseas trip. But it has no trip cancellation, no flight-delay benefit, no personal liability cover, and it excludes pre-existing conditions, so it is not a full replacement for a standalone policy. A standalone Singapore travel plan fills those gaps and usually adds a higher medical limit from a low premium. Treat the Metal cover as a useful top-up, not the whole solution.
  • Not in this Singapore travel policy. The Tokio Marine document behind the Metal plan is a travel insurance certificate: it does not include purchase protection, extended warranty or mobile phone insurance. Revolut markets various card and app perks on its paid plans, but none of the five shopping protections are confirmed in the Singapore policy wording, so a cracked or stolen phone is your cost. If device or purchase cover is what you want, a separate gadget policy or a card that specifically offers it is the better route.
Not just Revolut

Metal is a strong choice — but depending on what you prioritize, one of these may suit you better.
