Our take on travel insurance for the American Express Singapore Airlines Business

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Charge the full round-trip fare to the Amex Singapore Airlines Business card, or book with HighFlyer points, and a complimentary Chubb travel insurance policy switches on by itself for a business traveller and their family. The cover is led by a large travel accident lump sum, up to S$1,000,000 if an accident on a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus causes death or permanent disablement, and it adds real inconvenience benefits the thinner Amex cards leave out: up to S$10,000 trip cancellation, up to S$12,500 for lost or stolen personal belongings, a S$200 flight-delay cash benefit and baggage-delay cover. What it does not include is the part that costs the most: there is no overseas medical cover and no emergency evacuation, so a hospital admission abroad, which MediShield Life (Singapore's national health scheme) does not pay outside Singapore, is entirely on you. The trip-cancellation list is also narrow, built around accidental death, certified illness or injury and compulsory government quarantine, and every benefit only pays for costs charged to the card. Treat this as cover for accident and inconvenience, not for medical risk, and pair it with a standalone Singapore policy, from around S$20 a trip, to cover the overseas medical, evacuation and wider cancellation claims this card leaves out.

What works on travel
  • S$1,000,000 travel accident lump sum for death or permanent disablement on a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus
  • Up to S$10,000 trip cancellation for certified illness, accidental death or compulsory quarantine
  • Up to S$12,500 for lost, stolen or damaged personal belongings, and S$1,250 for money and documents
  • Cover switches on automatically once the full fare is charged, and includes spouse and children up to 23
Where travel breaks down
  • No overseas medical cover: a hospital admission abroad is paid entirely out of your own pocket
  • No emergency evacuation: an air ambulance home from the region can run S$50,000 to S$120,000, none of it covered
  • Flight-delay and baggage-delay benefits are capped at a token S$200 per person
  • Trip cancellation covers only a narrow list of reasons and excludes anything known before booking

What does American Express Singapore Airlines Business Travel Insurance actually cover?

The S$1,000,000 headline is the accident sum on a public conveyance, not a medical limit. There is no cover for a general accident away from the flight, ferry, train or bus.

Deductible : No deductible

Travel Accident is the main benefit on this card. Personal accident cover pays a fixed lump sum, not a medical bill, if an accident while you are riding a scheduled public conveyance (a flight, ferry, train or bus you paid to board, what the policy calls a common carrier) causes death, total disablement or permanent loss within 365 days. The sum is up to S$1,000,000 for death, total disablement, or the loss of two limbs or the sight of both eyes, and up to S$500,000 for one limb or one eye. Cover extends to the cardmember, spouse and dependent children up to 23, with a lower scale of up to S$100,000 for a child under 16. It is not an overseas medical limit, and it only pays for an accident on the public conveyance itself.

What's covered
  • Accidental death, total disablement or permanent loss on a scheduled public conveyance overseas
  • Up to S$1,000,000 for death or the loss of two limbs or sight in both eyes, S$500,000 for one limb or one eye
  • Cardmember, spouse and dependent children up to 23, with a lower scale under 16
What's not covered
  • War and terrorism, self-inflicted injury, suicide and criminal acts
  • Alcohol above the legal driving limit, or non-prescribed drugs
  • Pre-existing medical conditions

No overseas emergency medical cover. This benefit is not included with this card. All medical costs overseas are the cardholder's responsibility. MediShield Life does not cover you outside Singapore, and a serious hospital admission in the US or Europe can run S$100,000 or more.

What's not covered
  • Overseas medical treatment is not a benefit of this card
  • Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy excluded

No emergency evacuation cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Emergency evacuation costs are entirely the cardholder's responsibility. An air ambulance from Bali or Bangkok back to Singapore runs S$50,000 to S$120,000.

What's not covered
  • Emergency medical evacuation is not a benefit of this card

No overseas emergency dental cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Emergency dental treatment overseas is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • Overseas emergency dental is not a benefit of this card

No hospital cash allowance. This benefit is not included with this card. There is no daily cash payment while you are hospitalised overseas.

What's not covered
  • Overseas hospital daily cash is not a benefit of this card
COVID-19 is not named in the wording. A positive test that leaves you certified unfit to travel, or a compulsory government quarantine order, would fall under the specified causes, but a cancellation for other pandemic reasons would not.

Deductible : No deductible

Trip Cancellation and Postponement pays back prepaid, non-refundable costs if you have to call off your trip before you leave, but only for a specified cause. If you, a close relative or your travel companion suffers an accidental death, or you fall ill or are injured and a doctor certifies you unfit to travel, or you are placed under compulsory government quarantine, the card reimburses up to S$10,000 for unused flights, accommodation, excursions and leisure bookings that were paid on the card and cannot be refunded. Claims under S$150 are not paid, and anything you knew about before booking is excluded. It is trip cancellation for a short, named list of reasons, not an all-cause policy.

Recommended : $15,000

What's covered
  • Up to S$10,000 for prepaid, non-refundable travel, accommodation, excursions and leisure bookings
  • Covers accidental death, injury or sickness certified unfit to travel, and compulsory government quarantine
What's not covered
  • Claims under S$150
  • Anything known to you or already diagnosed before you booked
  • Reasons outside the specified-cause list, such as a change of mind, work or visa problems

No trip curtailment cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost to fly home early after a family emergency and resume a trip is out of pocket. Only cancellation before you depart is covered, not cutting a trip short once it has started.

What's not covered
  • Trip curtailment is not a benefit of this card

No travel disruption cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Extra accommodation and transport from a trip disruption, beyond the small flight-delay cash benefit, are the cardholder's responsibility.

What's not covered
  • Travel disruption is not a benefit of this card
The S$200 cap makes this a token benefit, not real delay protection.

Deductible : No deductible

Flight delay pays a small cash benefit for refreshment and accommodation if your flight is delayed at least 4 hours and no alternative flight is made available. It pays up to S$200 per person, capped at S$400 per family, and only for costs charged to the card. The cap is low, enough for a meal and perhaps a night, not for a full re-routing, which is why the benefit reads better than it pays. It does not apply to a delay the airline resolves within 4 hours.

Recommended : $1,000

What's covered
  • Cash for refreshment and accommodation during a qualifying flight delay
  • Up to S$200 per person, maximum S$400 per family
What's not covered
  • Delays where the airline offers alternative travel you refuse
  • Private charter flights where you are the only passenger

No missed connection cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost of alternative transport after a missed connection is out of pocket. Only an outright flight delay, not a missed onward connection, triggers the small delay benefit.

What's not covered
  • Missed connection is not a benefit of this card
The per-item limit is S$1,500, so a single high-value item like a laptop or camera may not be fully replaced even though the overall trip limit is S$12,500.

Deductible : No deductible

This covers loss, theft or damage to your money, travel documents and personal belongings while overseas, up to an overall S$12,500 per person per trip. Other personal items are covered up to S$1,500 per item or set, and valuables such as jewellery and watches up to S$1,500 in total. You must report the loss to the police or the relevant provider within 24 hours and keep the report, and cover only pays for items charged to the card or backed by proof of purchase. There is a S$150 minimum claim, and wear and tear, fragile items, and valuables in checked-in baggage are excluded.

Recommended : $15,000

What's covered
  • Loss, theft or damage to personal belongings up to S$12,500 per person per trip
  • Up to S$1,500 per item or set, and S$1,500 in total for valuables
  • Money and travel documents up to S$1,250 for ages 16 and over
What's not covered
  • Claims under S$150
  • Wear and tear, fragile items, and valuables in checked-in baggage
  • Property left unattended in a public place
This pays for the delay itself. Loss or theft of the items is handled separately under the personal belongings cover.

Deductible : No deductible

This covers baggage delay. If your checked bag has not arrived within 6 hours of your arrival, the card reimburses up to S$200 per person for essential items you buy while you wait. If the bag is still missing after 48 hours, it adds up to a further S$500 per person, for up to S$1,000 per family in total. You must keep receipts and get a Property Irregularity Report, the airline's official record of missing baggage. It is not payable on the final leg of your return flight to Singapore, so a bag delayed on the way home pays nothing.

Recommended : $3,000

What's covered
  • Up to S$200 per person for essentials after a 6-hour baggage delay
  • Up to a further S$500 per person if the bag is still missing after 48 hours
  • Up to S$1,000 per family in total
What's not covered
  • Baggage delay on the final leg of the return flight to Singapore
  • Items not immediately necessary for the trip
  • Private charter flights where you are the only passenger

Deductible : No deductible

If your money or travel documents, kept securely or in a locked place, are lost, stolen or damaged overseas, the card reimburses up to S$1,250 if you are 16 or over, or up to S$100 if under 16. This is the benefit that helps with a stolen passport or cash while abroad. You must report the loss to the police within 24 hours and keep the report, and there is a S$150 minimum claim. Shortages from errors or currency exchange, and documents other than travel documents, are not covered.

Recommended : $3,000

What's covered
  • Up to S$1,250 for lost, stolen or damaged money and travel documents, ages 16 and over
  • Up to S$100 for a child under 16
What's not covered
  • Claims under S$150
  • Currency shortages from errors or exchange-rate movements
  • Documents other than travel documents

No personal liability cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Legal liability for injury to others or property damage overseas is uninsured, and claims commonly reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.

What's not covered
  • Personal liability overseas is not a benefit of this card

Weaker after the recent changes

Used to be a decent card. With the recent nerf is now an awful general spend card with far better alternatives as long as you are able to use personal cards. Amex customer service, which used to be one if it best selling points, is really awful nowadays. All in all not reason to get this card unless your company does not allow you to put business spend on a personal card and insists on using a corporate card.

How to make an Amex Singapore Airlines Business travel insurance claim

1

Step 1: Notify Chubb Insurance Singapore as soon as possible

Start your claim with Chubb Insurance Singapore within the notice period in the certificate, commonly 30 days of the incident. Only expenses charged to the Amex Singapore Airlines Business can be reimbursed where the benefit requires the fare to be charged to the card.

2

Step 2: Gather the proof Chubb Insurance Singapore needs

Keep the card statement showing the fare was charged, your boarding passes, and for a medical claim the doctor's report and receipts. For delayed or lost baggage, get a Property Irregularity Report from the airline before leaving the airport; for theft, file a police report within 24 hours.

3

Step 3: Escalate to FIDReC if a fair claim is denied

If Chubb Insurance Singapore rejects a claim you believe is valid, escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, within 6 months of the insurer's final reply. FIDReC independently mediates disputes between consumers and financial institutions in Singapore.

FAQ

What people ask about the American Express Singapore Airlines Business

  • There is no separate sign-up form. Cover switches on automatically once the full fare for a round trip is charged to the card, or the trip is booked using HighFlyer points. The trip must be a return journey that starts and ends in Singapore, and cover is not activated until a return ticket has been purchased. If only part of the fare hits the card, or you book on another card, the cover may not apply.
  • The cardmember is covered, along with their partner (spouse or a life partner you have lived with for at least three months) and dependent children up to 23 years old, when they travel with the cardmember. Everyone must be a Singapore resident, meaning a citizen, permanent resident, or the holder of a valid work or long-term pass. Cardmembers and adults must be aged 18 to 80 at the start of the insurance year.
  • No. There is no overseas emergency medical cover and no emergency evacuation on this card. If you fall ill or are injured abroad, the hospital bill is entirely your own. MediShield Life, Singapore's national health scheme, does not pay for treatment outside Singapore, so for medical risk you need a standalone travel insurance policy.
  • The wording does not name COVID-19. There is no overseas medical cover at all, so COVID-19 treatment abroad is not paid. On the trip-cancellation side, a compulsory government quarantine order, or a doctor certifying you unfit to travel because you are ill, would fall under the specified causes, but a cancellation for other pandemic-related reasons would not. For full COVID-19 medical and cancellation cover, use a standalone policy that states it explicitly.
  • That is the Travel Accident sum, a personal accident lump sum. Personal accident means a fixed payout for death or permanent disablement caused by an accident, not a refund of medical costs. It pays up to S$1,000,000 only if the accident happens while you are on a common carrier (a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus you paid to board) and it causes death or permanent loss within 365 days. A child under 16 has a lower scale of up to S$100,000. It is not a measure of how much medical cover you have, because there is none.
  • Claims are handled by Chubb, the underwriter. Submit online at Chubb's Singapore claims centre (chubbclaims.com/amex/sg-en) or call +65 6299 0922, and notify Chubb within 30 days of the incident. Keep the card statement showing the fare was charged, boarding passes, police or airline reports, and receipts for anything you are claiming. Only costs charged to the card can be reimbursed.
  • You can escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre. FIDReC is an independent body that mediates disputes between consumers and financial institutions in Singapore. Raise your case within six months of Chubb's final reply.
  • There is no overseas medical, no emergency evacuation, no trip curtailment (cutting a trip short once it has started), no missed-connection benefit and no personal liability cover. General exclusions include war, self-inflicted injury, criminal acts, being intoxicated above the legal driving limit, pre-existing medical conditions, and travel against a Singapore government travel advisory. Every benefit pays only for costs charged to the card.
  • Each trip is covered for up to 45 consecutive days, and up to 180 days in total across the insurance year. Cover stops after 12.01am Singapore time on the 46th day of a single trip. If you travel for longer than 45 days at a stretch, buy a standalone policy that matches your trip length.
  • For most trips, yes. This card is strong on the accident lump sum and adds useful trip-cancellation and baggage benefits, but it leaves out the two claims that cost the most: overseas medical treatment and emergency evacuation. A standalone Singapore travel policy, from around S$20 a trip, fills those gaps and usually adds wider cancellation cover and COVID-19 protection.
