Our take on travel insurance for the Revolut Standard

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Book a trip on the free Revolut Standard plan and no travel insurance switches on, because the Standard tier includes none at all. Travel medical and travel delay cover only appear once you pay for a higher plan: Premium, Metal or Ultra, all underwritten by Tokio Marine, and even then the cover is limited to trips you charge to Revolut. Stay on the free Standard plan and you travel with nothing from the card, which leaves you exposed on the costs that matter most. A serious overseas hospital admission can pass S$100,000, and MediShield Life, the national health scheme, pays nothing outside Singapore, so a bad admission in the US or Europe lands entirely on you. The Standard plan does not fill that gap, and neither do the app's spending tools. A standalone Singapore travel policy does, from about S$20 a trip, covering medical treatment, trip cancellation and lost baggage the free plan leaves out.

Where travel breaks down
  • No travel insurance on the free plan: the Revolut Standard plan includes no travel medical, cancellation or delay cover at all
  • Travel cover only starts if you pay for Premium, Metal or Ultra, where Tokio Marine underwrites a limited benefit tied to trips charged to Revolut
  • No overseas medical or evacuation cover on the Standard plan: a serious hospital bill abroad, which MediShield Life does not cover, is entirely on you

How to contact Revolut Standard assistance?

This plan carries no complimentary travel insurance, so there is no underwriter or 24-hour assistance hotline attached to it. For medical, cancellation and baggage cover overseas, buy a standalone Singapore travel policy and keep its emergency assistance number with you while you travel.

What to do if you need travel cover with the Revolut Standard plan

1

Step 1: Buy a standalone travel policy before you fly

Because the plan includes no travel insurance, arrange a standalone Singapore travel policy that states its overseas medical, cancellation and baggage limits in writing. Cover starts from around S$20 for a single trip.

2

Step 2: Keep your policy and emergency number with you

Save your travel insurer's 24-hour emergency assistance number and policy number on your phone, and keep receipts, medical reports and any police or airline reports to support a claim.

3

Step 3: Escalate to FIDReC for a card-issuer dispute

For a dispute with the card issuer itself, not travel insurance, you can approach FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, free of charge within 6 months of the issuer's final reply.

FAQ

What people ask about the Revolut Standard

  • No. The Revolut Standard plan is the free tier, and it includes no travel insurance at all. Charging a flight or hotel to it does not switch on medical, cancellation or baggage cover, because the Standard plan has no insurance certificate attached. Travel cover on Revolut is a paid feature that only comes with the higher plans, Premium, Metal and Ultra, underwritten by Tokio Marine. If you stay on the free Standard plan and want protection for an overseas trip, you either pay to upgrade or take a standalone Singapore travel policy. Do not assume the free plan covers you the way a card with a complimentary certificate might, because it does not.
  • Travel cover on Revolut sits behind the paid plans: Premium, Metal and Ultra. Those tiers include travel medical and travel delay benefits underwritten by Tokio Marine, the insurer, and the free Standard plan gets none of it. The cover is also limited: it generally applies only to trips you paid for with your Revolut account, and each tier caps the maximum trip length, for example around 30 days per trip on Metal and up to 90 days per trip on Ultra. Benefit limits, excesses and exclusions apply, so the paid cover is narrower than a full standalone travel policy. Always read the policy wording for the plan you hold before you rely on it, and check whether pre-existing conditions and your destination are covered.
  • Compare them on cover, not just on the monthly fee. Upgrading from the free Standard plan to Premium, Metal or Ultra adds Tokio Marine travel cover, but that cover is limited: it usually applies only to trips charged to Revolut, caps the trip length, and comes with benefit limits and exclusions. A standalone Singapore travel policy, from about S$20 for a single trip, is bought for the specific trip and typically covers overseas medical treatment, trip cancellation, baggage and COVID-19 in one place. For one big overseas holiday, a standalone policy is often the safer and simpler choice. If you travel very often, price the annual cost of a paid Revolut plan against an annual multi-trip travel policy before deciding, and check the fine print of each.
  • No. The free Revolut Standard plan has no travel insurance, so it covers nothing related to COVID-19 overseas: not medical treatment, not quarantine costs, not a trip you cancel because you test positive. There is no certificate to read and no benefit to activate on the Standard plan, because it is a spending account rather than an insurance product. If COVID-19 cover matters for your trip, you need a policy that names it. Many standalone Singapore travel policies now include COVID-19 medical treatment and trip cancellation, and the paid Revolut plans may cover some COVID-19 costs too, so check the wording. On the free Standard plan by itself, you have no COVID-19 protection whatsoever.
  • No. The free Revolut Standard plan does not include mobile phone insurance, and it carries no purchase protection or extended warranty either. If your phone screen cracks or the handset is stolen after you paid with the card, the repair or replacement is entirely your cost, and a flagship phone runs S$1,200 to S$2,300 to replace. The Standard plan is a spending account, so it has no shopping-protection benefits built in. Paying for a higher Revolut plan adds travel-related perks, not phone or purchase cover on your everyday shopping. For device cover you would need a separate gadget or mobile insurance policy, or a card that specifically offers phone protection.
  • For spending, it works well; for protection, no. The free Revolut Standard plan is a handy travel companion at the checkout, with fair exchange rates and no monthly fee, which is why many Singapore travellers carry it. What it does not do is insure the trip: it includes no overseas medical cover, no trip cancellation and no baggage benefit. If a flight is cancelled, a bag goes missing, or you land in a foreign hospital, the free plan pays nothing toward those costs, and MediShield Life, the national health scheme, does not cover you outside Singapore. The sensible setup is to use the Standard plan for payments and pair it with a standalone travel policy, from about S$20 a trip, that covers medical, cancellation and baggage. Bring the card for the spending, and bring insurance for the risks.
