Our take on travel insurance for the Standard Chartered Beyond

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

The Standard Chartered Beyond card carries a genuine travel insurance policy, not just an accident certificate: charge your flights to the card and you get up to S$675,000 in overseas medical expenses, up to S$675,000 in emergency medical evacuation, and trip cancellation up to S$10,125, all underwritten by AIG. COVID-19 is treated as any other sickness, so an overseas COVID hospital stay is claimable, and cover runs for trips up to 180 days. Two things temper the picture. First, the AIG policy sets its limits in US dollars and the figures shown here are converted at 1 USD = 1.35 SGD; claims pay out in Singapore dollars at the exchange rate on the claim date, so the effective amount shifts with the currency. Second, the softer benefits are thin for a S$1,635 card: trip cancellation caps at S$10,125, baggage at S$4,050 with a S$844 per-item sublimit, and pre-existing conditions are excluded. Cover only switches on when the full air fare, or the taxes on a miles booking, is charged to the card, so a trip paid another way travels uninsured. For a guaranteed medical and cancellation limit sized to your trip, a standalone Singapore travel insurance policy from around S$20 is still the safer backstop. Treat the card cover as a strong built-in layer, not the whole policy.

What works on travel
  • Overseas medical expenses up to S$675,000, with COVID-19 treated as any other sickness
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation up to S$675,000, arranged by a 24-hour AIG assistance line
  • Personal accident up to S$675,000 on a common carrier, plus family cover for spouse and children
  • Trip cancellation, postponement and curtailment each up to S$10,125
  • Flight delay and baggage delay both trigger at 4 hours, shorter than many rival cards
  • Cover activates automatically on charging the fare, including taxes on a miles booking, with no separate registration form
  • Long trips covered, up to 180 days per journey
Where travel breaks down
  • Every benefit limit is set in US dollars in the AIG policy and shown converted at 1 USD = 1.35 SGD; claims pay in Singapore dollars at the claim-date exchange rate
  • Trip cancellation capped at S$10,125, modest for a S$1,635 card and prepaid luxury travel
  • Baggage limited to S$4,050 with a S$844 per-article sublimit
  • Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded, as with most card cover
  • No cover at all if the air fare is not charged to the card
  • No purchase protection or extended warranty verified on this card

What does Standard Chartered Beyond Travel Insurance actually cover?

The S$675,000 headline is the common-carrier accident sum. A general travel accident pays up to S$202,500, and all limits are converted from the policy's US dollar sums at 1 USD = 1.35 SGD.

Deductible : No deductible

Personal accident is a lump sum paid for accidental death or permanent total disablement while you travel. On the Beyond card it pays up to S$675,000 if the accident happens on a common carrier, meaning a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus you paid to ride, and up to S$202,500 for an accident elsewhere on the trip. A spouse is covered up to half your sums and each child up to S$67,500 on the common-carrier benefit. The full air fare must be charged to the card for cover to apply.

Recommended : SGD 1,000,000

What's covered
  • Accidental death or permanent total disablement overseas
  • Higher S$675,000 sum for an accident on a common carrier
  • Spouse at 50 percent of your sums and up to three children covered
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing medical conditions and pregnancy
  • Extreme sports, competition sports and expeditions
  • War, C.B.R.N incidents, self-inflicted injury
The S$675,000 limit is denominated in US dollars in the policy and is shown converted at 1 USD = 1.35 SGD; it pays out in Singapore dollars at the claim-date exchange rate.

Deductible : No deductible

This is the benefit you claim on when illness or an accident lands you in hospital abroad, and it matters because MediShield Life and Integrated Shield Plans do not pay for overseas leisure treatment. The Beyond card covers overseas medical expenses up to S$675,000, and the policy states that sickness includes COVID-19, so an overseas COVID admission is treated like any other illness. There is no per-claim excess to pay. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, and a small S$135 sub-limit applies to accident-related dental.

Recommended : SGD 1,000,000

What's covered
  • Overseas hospital, surgical and physician costs from injury or sickness
  • COVID-19 treated as any other sickness
  • Medical cover continues up to 7 days after a one-way trip arrival
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing medical conditions and pregnancy or childbirth
  • Routine or elective treatment
  • Extreme sports and expeditions
The S$675,000 limit is converted from the policy's US dollar limit at 1 USD = 1.35 SGD and pays in Singapore dollars at the claim-date rate.

Deductible : No deductible

Emergency medical evacuation pays to move you to adequate care or home to Singapore when local facilities cannot treat you, and it is the benefit that covers an air ambulance, which from Bali or Bangkok commonly runs S$50,000 to S$120,000. The Beyond card covers this up to S$675,000 and includes repatriation of mortal remains. It must be arranged by AIG's 24-hour assistance department, reachable while you travel, so call before making your own transport arrangements.

What's covered
  • Emergency medical evacuation to adequate care or back to Singapore
  • Repatriation of mortal remains
  • Coordinated by a 24-hour assistance department
What's not covered
  • Transport not authorised by the assistance department
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Travel undertaken against medical advice
This is a S$135 accident-only dental sub-limit, not standalone dental cover.

Deductible : No deductible

Overseas emergency dental on the Beyond card is a small sub-limit inside the medical benefit: up to S$135 for treatment to sound, natural teeth after an accident. It is not general dental cover, so a toothache or a filling that fails abroad is not claimable. The amount is token and would cover little more than an emergency consultation.

Recommended : SGD 2,000

What's covered
  • Emergency treatment to sound, natural teeth following an accident
What's not covered
  • Dental problems not caused by an accident
  • Routine, cosmetic or ongoing dental work

Deductible : No deductible

Daily in-hospital cash pays a fixed sum for each full day you spend admitted to hospital overseas, on top of your medical claim, to offset incidentals like a companion's meals or transport. The Beyond card pays S$135 per day for up to 30 days, so up to S$4,050. A separate S$135 per day for up to 14 days applies if you are placed in a mandatory COVID-19 quarantine abroad.

What's covered
  • S$135 for each full day admitted to an overseas hospital, up to 30 days
  • Separate S$135 per day overseas COVID-19 quarantine benefit, up to 14 days
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Days not spent as a hospital inpatient
S$10,125 is a per-trip cap converted from the policy's US dollar limit at 1 USD = 1.35 SGD, modest for prepaid premium travel.

Deductible : No deductible

Trip cancellation reimburses prepaid flights, hotels and tours you lose when you have to call off the trip before departure for a covered reason. The Beyond card pays up to S$10,125, and covered reasons are broad: serious injury, sickness or death of you, a travelling companion or a close family member, plus your home being hit by fire, burglary or a natural disaster, or a court summons. Because the policy counts COVID-19 as a sickness, a cancellation caused by falling ill with it is claimable. For a card at this fee, the S$10,125 cap is modest against prepaid premium travel.

Recommended : SGD 15,000

What's covered
  • Prepaid, non-refundable flights, accommodation and tours
  • Serious injury, sickness or death of you, a companion or close family
  • Home damage from fire, burglary or natural disaster, and court summons
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Cancelling for a reason known before booking
  • Disinclination to travel or financial circumstances

Deductible : No deductible

Trip curtailment covers cutting a trip short and heading home early for a covered emergency, such as a serious illness or a death in the family. The Beyond card reimburses the unused, prepaid portion of the trip and reasonable extra travel costs up to S$10,125. Keep evidence of the reason and the original booking, since the payout is based on what you had already paid for and did not use.

Recommended : SGD 12,000

What's covered
  • Unused prepaid travel and accommodation after cutting a trip short
  • Extra transport to return home early for a covered reason
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Curtailment for a reason known before departure

Deductible : No deductible

Trip postponement covers the cost of rebooking when a covered event forces you to push a trip back rather than cancel it outright, for example rescheduling flights and hotels after a family member falls seriously ill. The Beyond card pays the reasonable rearrangement costs up to S$10,125. It is a useful add-on, but the cap is small relative to the scale of disruption a delayed premium trip can cause.

Recommended : SGD 100,000

What's covered
  • Reasonable costs to rebook flights and accommodation after a covered event
  • Same broad reason list as trip cancellation
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Events known before booking

Deductible : No deductible

Travel delay pays out when your scheduled flight, or other common carrier, is delayed. The Beyond card triggers after 4 hours, which is shorter than the 6 or 8 hours many rival cards require, and pays reasonable costs up to S$675. Keep the airline's written confirmation of the delay and its cause, and hold on to receipts for anything you claim back.

Recommended : SGD 1,000

What's covered
  • Reasonable expenses after a common carrier delay of more than 4 hours
  • Applies to delays outside Singapore
What's not covered
  • Delays in Singapore or your home country
  • Delays known before departure

Deductible : No deductible

If a late or early incoming flight makes you miss a connection overseas, the Beyond card reimburses reasonable meals and accommodation while you wait for the next available departure, up to S$675. This is a reimbursement, so keep your receipts. The amount is meant to tide you over a few hours, not to fund a full re-routing.

Recommended : SGD 3,500

What's covered
  • Meals and accommodation after a missed connection overseas
  • Reasonable expenses while waiting for the next departure
What's not covered
  • Amounts already paid by the airline
  • Missed connections in Singapore
The S$4,050 limit carries a S$844 per-article sub-limit, so high-value single items are only partly covered.

Deductible : No deductible

Baggage and personal effects cover pays toward bags and belongings, including a laptop, that are lost, stolen or damaged in transit. The Beyond card covers up to S$4,050, but a single article, pair or set is capped at S$844, so a high-value camera or watch is only partly covered. Report any theft to the police or the carrier within 24 hours, as the policy requires it for a claim.

Recommended : SGD 15,000

What's covered
  • Loss, theft or damage to baggage and personal effects, including a laptop
  • Cover during a covered trip outside Singapore
What's not covered
  • S$844 per-article, pair or set sub-limit
  • Cash, documents, and items left unattended
  • Wear, tear and gradual deterioration

Deductible : No deductible

Baggage delay pays for the essentials you need to buy, such as clothes and toiletries, when your checked bags are delayed or misdirected on the way out. The Beyond card triggers after 4 hours and reimburses reasonable purchases up to S$675. It does not apply to a delay on your bags once you are back in Singapore, and you claim it back against receipts.

Recommended : SGD 1,500

What's covered
  • Essential purchases when checked baggage is delayed more than 4 hours
  • Applies to delays outside Singapore
What's not covered
  • Baggage delay on return to Singapore
  • Items bought after the bags are returned

Deductible : No deductible

This benefit helps when a passport, travel documents or cash are lost or stolen abroad, covering the cost to replace them. The Beyond card covers up to S$675, within which lost personal money is capped at S$405. Report the loss to the police within 24 hours, since a report is needed to claim. The limit is small and intended for the reissue paperwork rather than a large cash loss.

Recommended : SGD 3,000

What's covered
  • Cost to replace a lost or stolen passport or travel documents
  • Lost personal money up to a S$405 sub-limit
What's not covered
  • Losses not reported to police
  • Documents left unattended

Deductible : No deductible

Personal liability covers what you become legally responsible to pay if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property while travelling, for example a hotel flooded by a tap left running. The Beyond card covers this up to S$675,000, which is substantial, though such claims can still run higher. It does not cover liability tied to a car, business activity or a deliberate act.

Recommended : SGD 1,000,000

What's covered
  • Legal liability for accidental injury to others or damage to their property overseas
  • Legal costs agreed by the insurer
What's not covered
  • Liability from vehicles, business or professional activity
  • Deliberate or criminal acts
  • Liability to family members or travelling companions

How to make a Standard Chartered Beyond travel insurance claim

1

Step 1: Notify AIG as soon as possible

Start your claim with AIG within the notice period in the certificate, commonly 30 days of the incident. Only expenses charged to the Standard Chartered Beyond can be reimbursed where the benefit requires the fare to be charged to the card.

2

Step 2: Gather the proof AIG needs

Keep the card statement showing the fare was charged, your boarding passes, and for a medical claim the doctor's report and receipts. For delayed or lost baggage, get a Property Irregularity Report from the airline before leaving the airport; for theft, file a police report within 24 hours.

3

Step 3: Escalate to FIDReC if a fair claim is denied

If AIG rejects a claim you believe is valid, escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, within 6 months of the insurer's final reply. FIDReC independently mediates disputes between consumers and financial institutions in Singapore.

FAQ

What people ask about the Standard Chartered Beyond

  • The Beyond card comes with a full travel policy underwritten by AIG through the World Elite Mastercard programme. It covers overseas medical expenses up to S$675,000, emergency medical evacuation up to S$675,000, personal accident up to S$675,000 on a common carrier, trip cancellation, postponement and curtailment up to S$10,125 each, travel and baggage delay from 4 hours, baggage up to S$4,050 and personal liability up to S$675,000. All limits are set in US dollars in the AIG policy and are shown here converted at 1 USD = 1.35 SGD; they pay out in Singapore dollars at the exchange rate on the claim date. Cover extends to your spouse and children at reduced sums, and applies to trips of up to 180 days that start from Singapore.
  • Cover switches on automatically when you charge the entire cost of your flights, the common carrier tickets, to the Beyond card before you depart. If you book on miles, charging the taxes and surcharges to the card also qualifies, since the policy accepts tickets acquired with points from the card's rewards programme. There is no separate opt-in form to submit. If the fare is paid with another card or method, the trip is not covered, so always put the airfare on the Beyond card and keep the statement as proof.
  • Yes. Overseas medical expenses from injury or sickness are covered up to S$675,000, which is the benefit that matters most abroad because MediShield Life and Integrated Shield Plans do not pay for overseas leisure treatment, and a serious hospital admission in the US or Europe can run past S$100,000. There is no per-claim excess. The cover is for emergency and necessary treatment during the trip, and for a one-way trip it continues up to 7 days after arrival. Pre-existing medical conditions and pregnancy are excluded.
  • Yes. The policy defines sickness to include COVID-19, so catching it overseas is treated like any other illness for the medical expenses and evacuation benefits. There is also a separate overseas quarantine benefit of S$135 per day for up to 14 days if you are placed under a mandatory COVID-19 quarantine abroad. This is more generous than several rival cards, some of which exclude COVID-19 entirely, so do not assume the position carries from one card to another. Pre-existing conditions remain excluded.
  • Personal accident, a lump sum for accidental death or permanent total disablement, pays up to S$675,000 if the accident happens on a common carrier, meaning a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus you paid to ride, and up to S$202,500 for an accident elsewhere on the trip. A spouse is covered at half your sums and each of up to three children up to S$67,500 on the common-carrier benefit. This is an accident lump sum, separate from the S$675,000 medical expenses limit you would claim on for hospital treatment.
  • For a medical emergency or evacuation overseas, call AIG's 24-hour assistance department first, on 001 817 826 7014 by collect call from outside North America, so they can authorise and arrange it. For other claims, notify AIG within 30 days of the incident: file online at sg.mycardbenefits.com, call +65 6419 1667 during Singapore business hours, or email APAC.Mastercard@aig.com. Keep itemised bills, any police or carrier report made within 24 hours, boarding passes, and the card statement showing the airfare was charged. If a fair claim is denied and you disagree, you can escalate free to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, within 6 months of the insurer's final reply.
  • The medical and evacuation limits are strong, but the softer benefits are modest for a S$1,635 card. Trip cancellation caps at S$10,125, baggage at S$4,050 with a S$844 per-article sub-limit, and travel document cover at S$675. Pre-existing medical conditions and pregnancy are excluded, and extreme sports, competition sports and expeditions are not covered. Every limit is set in US dollars in the AIG policy and shown converted at 1 USD = 1.35 SGD, paying in Singapore dollars at the claim-date rate. The biggest trap is activation: charge the airfare to the card, or the trip is uninsured.
  • It depends on your trip. The card's S$675,000 medical and evacuation cover is genuinely strong, so for many trips it is a solid backstop, provided you charged the airfare to the card. But if you are travelling with a managed pre-existing condition, taking an expensive prepaid trip that exceeds the S$10,125 cancellation cap, carrying high-value gear beyond the S$844 per-item baggage sub-limit, or planning extreme sports, a standalone Singapore travel policy fills those gaps from around S$20 a trip and pays in Singapore dollars. Treat the card cover as a strong built-in layer and top it up where your trip needs more.
