Our opinion on American Express Business Green Rewards Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Delay only. No cancellation, no medical. This is a rewards card; the travel insurance is a thin layer that rarely fires at a 12-hour trigger and $300 cap per trip. Most cardholders assume the Global Assist Hotline covers something abroad. It provides referrals, not payments, and a foreign ER bill averages $15,000 to $60,000 with no card coverage. Standalone travel medical insurance starts at $100,000 per person for international trips. For domestic short-haul business travel, this card gives a delay baseline and secondary baggage coverage; anything international requires a separate policy.

What works on travel
  • $300 trip delay reimbursement: covers meals, lodging, toiletries, and medication when a covered delay exceeds 12 consecutive hours
  • $1,250 carry-on baggage protection: secondary coverage for lost, damaged, or stolen cabin luggage on covered trips
  • $50,000 rental car CDW included: secondary collision and theft coverage for rentals up to 30 days
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation: non-refundable business trips are unprotected regardless of the reason for cancellation
  • 12-hour delay trigger: among the highest thresholds for a business card, so the $300 benefit fires infrequently on routine routes
  • No emergency medical abroad: the Global Assist Hotline provides referrals only, zero financial coverage for hospital bills or evacuation
  • No trip interruption coverage: additional costs to cut a trip short are entirely out of pocket

What does American Express Business Green Rewards Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

No trip cancellation exists on this card. A non-refundable $4,000 business trip is entirely at risk if you need to cancel for any reason.

No trip cancellation coverage. This benefit is not included with the American Express Business Green Rewards Card. All prepaid, non-refundable trip costs are the cardholder's financial responsibility regardless of the reason for cancellation.

No emergency medical insurance on this card. Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is the cardholder's responsibility. A serious ER visit in Japan or Europe runs $15,000 to $80,000.

No emergency medical coverage. The Global Assist Hotline provides referrals and coordination only. It does not pay for or directly arrange medical treatment. All medical, hospital, dental, and prescription costs incurred abroad are the cardholder's full financial responsibility.

No evacuation coverage. The Global Assist line connects you to providers but pays zero. An air ambulance from Asia or Europe can exceed $200,000.

No emergency evacuation coverage. The Global Assist Hotline can provide referrals and logistical information in an emergency, but it pays nothing. All evacuation transport costs are entirely the cardholder's responsibility.

No trip interruption coverage. This benefit is not included with this card. Any additional costs to cut a trip short and return home early are the cardholder's responsibility.

The 12-hour trigger means most domestic delays clear before the benefit fires. The $300 cap covers roughly one hotel night.

Deductible : No deductible

Trip must be charged in full to the Business Green Rewards Card (or in combination with Membership Rewards points, vouchers, or frequent flyer discounts) Delay must exceed 12 consecutive hours Covered causes: inclement weather, terrorist action or hijacking, Common Carrier equipment failure, lost or stolen passports or travel documents Eligible expenses: meals, lodging, toiletries, medication, and other personal use items

Coverage reimburses up to $300 for reasonable additional expenses including meals, lodging, toiletries, medication, and personal use items when a covered trip is delayed more than 12 consecutive hours. Covered causes include inclement weather, terrorist action or hijacking, Common Carrier equipment failure, and lost or stolen travel documents. Coverage is secondary to any carrier-provided compensation such as vouchers, exchanged tickets, or refunds. Maximum 2 claims per card per 12-month period.

Recommended : $500

What's not covered
  • Covered losses known to the traveler prior to departure
  • Expenses paid before the covered trip began
  • Loss due to intentional acts by the eligible traveler
  • Expenses not authorized and reimbursable by the employer when using a commercial card

No missed connection coverage. This benefit is not included with this card. If a delayed inbound flight causes you to miss a connecting flight, rebooking costs and additional expenses are not covered.

No early return home benefit. This benefit is not included with the American Express Business Green Rewards Card. Additional transportation costs from cutting a trip short in an emergency are entirely out of pocket.

No baggage delay benefit. This benefit is not included with the American Express Business Green Rewards Card. Essential purchases during a checked baggage delay are out of pocket.

Coverage is secondary. The airline settles first, and the card covers the remaining gap only. The $500 cap on checked bags falls well below the airline's own domestic liability limit of $3,800.

Deductible : No deductible

Trip must be purchased with the American Express Business Green Rewards Card Loss must be reported to the carrier before leaving the airport terminal Property Irregularity Report (PIR) required for baggage claims

Coverage reimburses up to $1,250 for carry-on (cabin) baggage and up to $500 for checked baggage lost, damaged, or stolen during a covered trip. Coverage is provided by AMEX Assurance Company and is secondary to any airline reimbursement or other applicable insurance. Report the loss to the carrier before leaving the baggage claim area and obtain a Property Irregularity Report to support a claim.

Recommended : $3,000

What's not covered
  • Pre-existing damage or normal wear and tear
  • Items left unattended in public areas
  • Coverage does not apply if trip was not charged to the card

No travel accident insurance. Accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) coverage is not included with the American Express Business Green Rewards Card.

No hotel theft protection. This benefit is not included with this card. Personal belongings stolen from a hotel room are not covered.

Baggage insurance worked, got $380 back

For a $150 annual fee, the travel benefits are decent. Used the baggage insurance once for a lost checked bag: secondary coverage kicked in after the airline paid their limit. Got an additional $380 back. Didn't expect much.

Trip delay paid $300 after 14h in Miami

The trip delay benefit paid $300 after a 14-hour delay in Miami. Simple claim through AIG, documented the delay with a carrier statement, submitted hotel and meal receipts. Took about 3 weeks.

Rewards card with a thin travel layer

No trip cancellation, no purchase protection, no extended warranty. This is a rewards card with a thin travel layer. If you have any significant prepaid travel, you are not protected. Upgrade to Business Gold at minimum for purchase protection.

Upgraded to Business Gold within a year

I upgraded to the Business Gold within a year. The Green's insurance was basically useless for my travel needs. The $225 difference in annual fee pays for itself with the actual protections you get.

FAQ

What people ask about the American Express Business Green Rewards

  • No enrollment is required. Trip delay and lost baggage coverage activate automatically when you charge the full cost of a covered trip to your Business Green Rewards Card (or combine it with Membership Rewards points, vouchers, or frequent flyer certificates). For rental car CDW, pay the entire rental with the card and decline the collision damage waiver at the counter before picking up the vehicle. There is no phone call, activation code, or registration step. All benefits are included at no additional charge as a card feature.
  • The trip delay benefit covers the primary cardholder and their family members, defined as a spouse, domestic partner, or dependent child under age 19 (or up to age 26 if a full-time student at an accredited college). A Traveling Companion who made advance arrangements to travel with you or your family members for all or part of the covered trip is also eligible. Rental car CDW applies when the primary cardmember is the named renter on the rental agreement. Additional cardmembers on the same account should confirm their eligibility directly in the Guide to Benefits.
  • The rental car benefit provides secondary collision damage waiver (CDW) coverage up to $50,000. To activate it, decline the rental agency's CDW or loss damage waiver at the counter and pay the full rental cost with the Business Green Rewards Card. Secondary coverage means your personal auto insurance responds first; the card covers remaining eligible damage up to $50,000. Rentals must not exceed 30 consecutive days. Coverage is provided by AMEX Assurance Company. Liability for injury or property damage to third parties is not included. Cardholders without personal auto insurance effectively have the card as the sole payer.
  • For trip delay insurance, notify AIG within 60 days of the delay by calling 1-844-933-0648 or visiting aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress. Required documentation includes a carrier statement confirming the delay, copies of your airline tickets, your card charge receipt, and itemized receipts for all expenses claimed. Submit full proof of loss within 180 days. For rental car and baggage claims, contact AMEX Assurance Company at americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits or 1-800-338-1670. Document everything on the day of the incident: get the carrier delay statement before leaving the airport and keep all receipts dated.
  • The Business Green Rewards Card does not include trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical coverage abroad, emergency medical evacuation, baggage delay, travel accident insurance (AD&D), purchase protection, extended warranty, or cell phone protection. The Global Assist Hotline provides referrals and coordination only and pays nothing. The card's complete travel protection is a $300 trip delay benefit after 12 hours and $1,250 secondary coverage on lost carry-on bags. Cardholders booking non-refundable international travel or buying business equipment regularly should account for these gaps separately.
  • No. Trip cancellation insurance is not included with the American Express Business Green Rewards Card. If you need to cancel a prepaid, non-refundable trip for any reason, including illness, a weather event, or a scheduling conflict, there is no card benefit to cover those costs. The card's travel protection starts after departure with a $300 trip delay benefit that triggers after 12 hours. Cardholders who book non-refundable business travel out of pocket should consider a standalone travel insurance policy. A one-week trip policy with cancellation coverage typically costs $100 to $300 depending on trip value and destination.
  • No. Purchase protection is not included with the American Express Business Green Rewards Card. Items bought with the card have no coverage against theft or accidental damage from the card. This is the most significant gap relative to higher-tier Amex business cards. If your business regularly purchases equipment, electronics, or other items where theft or damage coverage matters, consider a card that includes purchase protection and extended warranty benefits.
  • Yes, for international travel. The Business Green Rewards Card does not include emergency medical or evacuation coverage. The Global Assist Hotline provides referrals to local medical providers but pays nothing. A standard emergency room visit abroad costs $15,000 to $80,000 depending on country and treatment. A medical evacuation can exceed $100,000. Standalone travel medical insurance for a one-week international trip starts at $40 to $80 per person. For any international business trip, separate medical coverage is a practical necessity when carrying only this card.
  • Secondary. Your personal auto insurance must respond first if a covered rental vehicle is damaged or stolen. The card covers remaining eligible damage up to $50,000 after your personal insurer has paid. For cardholders without personal auto insurance, the benefit effectively functions as the only available payer. Business travelers who prefer primary CDW coverage with no personal policy interaction should look at cards that offer primary CDW, which handles the rental claim directly without involving your personal insurer.
