Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the Barclays View
No travel insurance. None. Here's what that gap costs in a real medical situation abroad. The Guide to Benefits includes a Travel Accident Insurance plan listing a $250,000 AD&D benefit on page 9, but the fine print ties that plan to Ameriprise World cardmember enrollment (Master Policy 9906-88-49), not to Barclays View. Trip cancellation, emergency medical, medical evacuation, baggage delay, and every other standard travel benefit is absent from this card. A single ER visit in Japan averages $15,000 to $80,000. A transoceanic medical evacuation runs $100,000 to $300,000. Standalone travel insurance for a two-week international trip starts at $100 per person. If you carry this card as your only travel protection, you are self-insured for everything.
- $0 annual fee: no extra cost for the limited protections that do exist
- No trip cancellation: non-refundable flights, hotels, and tours are fully at risk for any covered reason
- No emergency medical abroad: a single ER visit in Europe or Asia runs $15,000 to $80,000, all out of pocket
- No medical evacuation: air ambulance from a remote country starts at $100,000
- No trip delay benefit: hotel, meals, and transportation during any delay are your expense
- No baggage coverage: delayed, lost, or stolen luggage is not reimbursed by this card
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

- All lost or stolen baggage costs are uncovered beyond the airline's standard liability
No travel accident insurance for Barclays View cardholders. The Guide to Benefits describes a $250,000 AD&D plan on pages 9 and 10, but Master Policy 9906-88-49 is tied to Ameriprise World cardmember enrollment. No lump-sum payment applies to Barclays View in the event of accidental death or dismemberment.
- Master Policy 9906-88-49 requires Ameriprise World cardmember enrollment: not applicable to Barclays View
No hotel theft protection. Personal belongings stolen from your hotel room are not covered by this card. Electronics and valuables left in a hotel room can total $1,000 to $3,000 with no recourse if stolen.
- All hotel theft losses are uncovered

What cardholders say about the Barclays View
Real experiences with CDW claims and purchase protections 47 reviews
r/CreditCards
Secondary CDW worked for a fender bender
Rented a car in Orlando, got a small dent in the parking lot, declined the agency CDW at the counter. Called Sedgwick, submitted the rental agreement, accident report, and repair invoice. Approved in about three weeks. Straightforward process as long as you have all the documents ready before you leave the rental lot.
CFPB complaint
Benefit advertised to attract customers, not to pay
They told me they don't really provide insurance, and that the benefit was advertised to attract new customers.

Guide mentions Trip Cancellation but it does not apply
The guide to benefits mentions a Trip Cancellation benefit but it turns out that policy is for Ameriprise World cardmembers, not Barclays View. I had to cancel a non-refundable trip and received nothing. Read the fine print carefully before assuming this card covers cancellations.

What people ask about the Barclays View
- Most Barclays View Mastercard purchase protections activate automatically when you buy with the card. For Auto Rental CDW, you must initiate and complete the rental with your Barclays View and decline the rental company's collision damage waiver at the counter. No registration is required. Note that this card does not include trip cancellation, emergency medical, or other standard travel insurance benefits, so there are no travel insurance benefits to activate beyond the rental car CDW.
- For Purchase Security, Extended Warranty, Price Protection, and Return Protection, coverage applies to the primary cardholder and authorized users on the account. For Auto Rental CDW, only the primary renter named on the rental agreement is covered, plus any additional drivers explicitly listed on the rental contract. For Identity Theft Resolution Services, coverage applies to the primary cardholder. Dependent family members are not automatically covered under the benefits in this Guide to Benefits.
- The Barclays View Mastercard offers secondary CDW in the United States when you carry personal auto insurance. Secondary means your personal insurer pays first, and the card reimburses your deductible and any uninsured costs. If you have no personal auto insurance at all, the benefit shifts to primary and covers the full damage or theft up to the vehicle's actual cash value. To use this benefit, decline the rental company's CDW or LDW at the counter, pay the entire rental with your card, and be the named driver on the agreement. Coverage applies for up to 31 consecutive days.
- Claims vary by benefit. For Auto Rental CDW, call Sedgwick at 1-800-348-8472 (1-804-673-1164 collect from outside the U.S.) within 45 days of the incident and submit all documents within 180 days. For Purchase Security, call 1-800-553-4820 within 60 days and submit documents within 90 days. For Extended Warranty and Price Protection, call 1-800-MasterCard within 60 days. For Return Protection, call 1-888-565-8472 within 90 days of purchase. Keep your card statement, original receipt, and any incident-specific documentation. Submit everything within the stated deadlines or the claim can be denied.
- The Barclays View Mastercard does not cover trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, emergency medical expenses abroad, medical evacuation, lost or stolen baggage, or baggage delay. The Guide to Benefits describes a Travel Accident Insurance plan, but that plan is tied to Ameriprise World cardmember enrollment and does not apply to Barclays View. For rental cars, exotic and luxury vehicles, motorcycles, cargo vans, and recreational vehicles are excluded. For Purchase Security, mysterious disappearance and jewelry from unattended luggage are excluded. Price Protection excludes clearance sales and auction pricing.
- Yes. The Barclays View Mastercard provides no emergency medical coverage abroad. There is no cap to cite because the coverage does not exist. A serious ER visit in Tokyo or Zurich can run $15,000 to $80,000, and a medical evacuation from Southeast Asia starts at $100,000. For any international travel, a standalone travel medical policy or annual travel insurance plan is necessary to close this gap. The card's $0 annual fee does not offset the financial exposure from traveling without medical coverage.
- No. The Barclays View Mastercard does not include cell phone protection. Cracked screens, theft, and accidental damage to your phone are not reimbursable through this card. Replacing a flagship smartphone costs $800 to $1,300 out of pocket. Some other cards include this benefit when you pay your monthly wireless bill with the card. The Barclays View does not offer this coverage.
- For most international trips, the Barclays View Mastercard is not sufficient as a standalone travel protection card. It provides no trip cancellation, no emergency medical, no evacuation, no trip delay, and no baggage coverage. The only travel-adjacent benefit is a secondary CDW for rental cars. If you travel internationally, add a dedicated travel insurance policy to address medical emergencies and cancellation risks. The card's purchase protections have real value for everyday spending, but they do not address the most serious financial risks of international travel.
