Our take on travel insurance for the Bilt Rewards Blue

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

No travel insurance. None. The bilt blue card benefits run on rent points, not trip protection. Book a flight with this card, cancel because of illness, and every non-refundable dollar is yours to absorb. Most cardholders assume a World Elite Mastercard includes trip cancellation. It doesn't, on this card. The Mastercard Concierge is available 24/7 at 1-877-354-8330 for reservations and pre-trip logistics. That's coordination, not insurance. If you use the Bilt Blue to book international travel, carry a separate policy. The gap is complete: no cancellation, no delay, no medical, no evacuation.

What works on travel
  • Mastercard Concierge Service: 24/7 personal assistant for travel reservations, dining, and logistics at 1-877-354-8330
  • Mastercard Travel and Lifestyle Services: access to premium hotel benefits, best-rate guarantees, and VIP status
  • $0 foreign transaction fees: useful when traveling internationally despite the absence of travel insurance
  • Mastercard Global Service: 24-hour lost/stolen card assistance worldwide at 1-800-307-7309
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation insurance: non-refundable flights, hotels, and tours are entirely out of pocket if you cancel for any reason
  • No emergency medical coverage abroad: all hospital and physician costs are the cardholder's responsibility. A single ER visit abroad averages $10,000 to $60,000.
  • No emergency evacuation: Mastercard Concierge can assist with arrangements, but all transportation costs are the cardholder's expense
  • No trip delay, no baggage delay, no lost luggage reimbursement: flight disruptions of any kind return nothing

Compelling entry point for the Bilt ecosystem

For renters and homeowners, the Bilt Blue is an intriguing no-fee option. The housing rewards concept is unique in the market. The purchase protection and cell phone coverage are solid baseline protections for a card with no annual fee.

Secondary CDW is a step down from the old Bilt card

The predecessor Bilt World Elite Mastercard offered primary CDW coverage. The new Bilt Blue has only secondary coverage, meaning your personal auto insurance pays first. That is a meaningful downgrade for frequent renters who want to keep their personal policy clean.

Customer service access is frustrating

Cardholders have reported hours-long wait times to talk to a representative, assuming they get past a chatbot. Bilt cards do not have a dedicated customer service phone number for Bilt-specific questions. For a premium rewards program, that is a real friction point.

How to file a Bilt Blue card benefit claim

1

Step 1: Report within the claim deadline

For Purchase Assurance claims, report within 60 days at www.mycardbenefits.com or call 1-800-Mastercard (1-800-627-8372). For Cell Phone Protection, report within 90 days at the same portal or number. For MasterRental Coverage, report within 60 days. Missing these windows may result in a denied claim.

2

Step 2: Gather required documentation

Purchase Assurance: itemized receipt, card statement showing the purchase, documentation of the damage (repair estimate and photos), and a police report if theft is the cause. Cell Phone Protection: card statement showing the wireless bill payment, a copy of your current wireless service provider billing statement, repair estimate for damaged phones, and a police report filed within 48 hours for theft.

3

Step 3: Submit written proof within the extended deadline

All documentation must reach Sedgwick within 180 days of the incident for Purchase Assurance and MasterRental, and within 120 days for Cell Phone Protection. Keep copies of everything submitted and note the date of each interaction. Sedgwick reserves the right to request the damaged item for inspection before reimbursing or replacing it.

FAQ

Bilt Blue card benefits: your questions answered

  • Most Bilt Blue card benefits activate automatically. For MasterRental Coverage (rental car CDW), pay the entire rental agreement with the card and decline the rental company's collision/damage waiver at the counter. For Cell Phone Protection, charge your monthly cellular wireless telephone bill to the Bilt Blue for the billing cycle prior to the incident. For Purchase Assurance, purchase the item entirely with the card. No pre-registration is required for any benefit. Call 1-800-Mastercard (1-800-627-8372) or visit mycardbenefits.com to open any claim.
  • The primary cardholder and authorized users on the account are covered under Purchase Assurance and Cell Phone Protection when the eligible purchase or wireless bill is charged to the card. For MasterRental Coverage, the covered cardholder and any additional authorized drivers listed on the rental agreement are covered. Mastercard ID Theft Protection is available to eligible cardholders who enroll at mastercardus.idprotectiononline.com.
  • At the rental counter, decline the rental company's optional collision/damage waiver. Then pay the entire rental agreement with the Bilt Blue card. If the rental vehicle is damaged or stolen, report the incident within 60 days at www.mycardbenefits.com or 1-800-Mastercard. Coverage is secondary: your personal auto insurance pays first, and the card covers remaining eligible costs up to the vehicle's Actual Cash Value. Maximum rental period is 31 consecutive days. Many vehicle types are excluded, including trucks, pickup trucks, full-size vans, motorcycles, motorbikes, and antique cars. Submit all documentation within 180 days.
  • File Purchase Assurance and Cell Phone Protection claims at www.mycardbenefits.com or by calling 1-800-Mastercard (1-800-627-8372). Report Purchase Assurance incidents within 60 days and submit documentation within 180 days. For Cell Phone Protection, report within 90 days and submit proof within 120 days. For MasterRental Coverage, report within 60 days and submit all documentation within 180 days. The administrator is Sedgwick Claims Management Services. Keep itemized receipts, your card billing statement, repair estimates, and photos of any damage.
  • The Bilt Blue card does not include any travel insurance. There is no trip cancellation or interruption coverage, no trip delay reimbursement, no baggage delay, no lost luggage reimbursement, no emergency medical coverage abroad, and no emergency evacuation. For rental car coverage, the card is secondary only, meaning your personal auto insurance processes the claim first. The card also does not include extended warranty protection or price protection. If you travel internationally, carry a standalone travel insurance policy to address the complete absence of travel protection on this card.
  • Yes, if you travel internationally. The Bilt Blue card does not include emergency medical coverage abroad. Mastercard Global Service can connect you with local medical providers and assist with logistics, but pays nothing directly. A serious ER visit outside the United States typically runs $10,000 to $80,000. The card provides zero reimbursement for any of those costs. A standalone travel insurance policy covering at least $100,000 in emergency medical coverage is the minimum protection worth carrying on any international trip.
  • No. The Bilt Blue is a rent and lifestyle rewards card, not a travel protection card. It provides no trip cancellation, no emergency medical, no evacuation, no trip delay, and no baggage coverage of any kind. The rental car coverage is secondary everywhere. If you are planning international travel with non-refundable bookings, pair this card with a travel credit card that includes trip cancellation and medical coverage, or purchase a standalone travel insurance policy.
  • Yes. The Bilt Blue includes Cell Phone Protection through Mastercard, underwritten by New Hampshire Insurance Company (AIG). Coverage pays up to $800 per claim with a $50 deductible, capped at $1,000 per card per 12 months, with a maximum of 2 claims per year. To qualify, your monthly cellular wireless phone bill must be charged to the Bilt Blue card for the billing cycle prior to the incident. File at mycardbenefits.com or 1-800-Mastercard within 90 days. For theft, file a police report within 48 hours.
