Our opinion on Blue Cash Everyday Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Zero travel insurance. No exceptions. The Blue Cash Everyday carries no trip cancellation, no trip delay benefit, no emergency medical, no emergency evacuation, and no baggage coverage of any kind. A Global Assist Hotline (1-800-333-2639) is available when you travel more than 100 miles from home: it arranges referrals and coordinates logistics. But the hotline pays nothing. Every hospital bill, missed flight rebooking, and stolen suitcase is your financial exposure. Cardholders who use the Blue Cash Everyday for domestic grocery and gas spend may never need a travel insurance backstop, but anyone booking international flights with this card needs a standalone travel policy before departure. The gap is not a design flaw: this card was built for everyday cashback, not travel protection.

What works on travel
  • Global Assist Hotline available 24/7: emergency referral and coordination service when traveling more than 100 miles from home
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation: all non-refundable trip costs before departure are at full financial risk
  • No emergency medical abroad: a single ER visit outside the US can cost $10,000 to $80,000 and this card pays zero
  • No trip delay: meals, lodging, and incidentals during any delay are out of pocket
  • No baggage insurance: lost or damaged luggage on any trip is not covered
  • No emergency evacuation: medical transport from a remote location can exceed $100,000 and is entirely uninsured

Trip cancellation

Not covered
Absent. All non-refundable flights, hotels, and tours are at full financial risk if a trip is cancelled. A standalone travel insurance policy is the only backstop.

Medical fees abroad

Not covered
No emergency medical insurance on this card. Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is yours. A serious ER visit in Europe or Asia runs $10,000 to $80,000.

Medical repatriation

Not covered
No evacuation coverage. A transoceanic air ambulance from Southeast Asia or Latin America costs $100,000 to $300,000, entirely at the cardholder's expense.

Purchase protection saved me on a laptop

Filed a purchase protection claim after my laptop got knocked off a table 45 days after buying it. Submitted the receipt and incident description. AMEX Assurance approved and reimbursed the repair cost. Process took about 2 weeks. Would not have expected a free card to cover that.

No travel protection at all

Got stuck with a cancelled flight and realized the Blue Cash Everyday has nothing for trip cancellation or delays. Ended up paying $300 for a hotel and meals out of pocket. Great for groceries and gas but this card should not be your only card if you travel.

CDW works but secondary is frustrating

Used the rental car coverage when a parking lot incident damaged the bumper. Had to go through my personal auto insurance first which raised a flag on my policy. Card covered the remaining $800 but I wish it was primary. Read the fine print on secondary before you rely on it.

2

Gather required documentation

For rental CDW: rental agreement, itemized damage estimate or repair invoice, incident report, and proof of card payment for the entire rental. For purchase protection: original purchase receipt and card statement showing the purchase. For extended warranty: original receipt, copy of manufacturer warranty, and documentation of the defect or failure.

3

FAQ

What people ask about the Blue Cash Everyday

  • Benefits activate automatically when you charge eligible purchases or rentals to the card, no enrollment required. For rental car CDW, decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter and charge the full rental to the card; both steps are required. For purchase protection and extended warranty, the item must be purchased entirely with the card. Keep your card statement confirming the charge on file; the benefit administrator requires proof of payment when processing any claim.
  • For rental car CDW, coverage applies when the basic cardmember is the named renter on the rental agreement and has charged the full rental to the card. Authorized drivers listed on the rental agreement are also covered. For purchase protection and extended warranty, benefits cover items purchased by the basic cardmember. The Global Assist Hotline is available to the cardmember and immediate family when traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • The card provides secondary Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance up to $50,000 through AMEX Assurance Company. Secondary means your personal auto insurance responds first: file with your insurer, and the card covers what your policy does not pay, up to $50,000. To activate coverage, decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter and charge the full rental to the card. Coverage applies worldwide except Australia, Italy, and New Zealand. The rental period must not exceed 30 consecutive days. Liability to third parties is not included.
  • Call 1-800-333-2639 to notify American Express Benefits promptly after a covered loss. For rental car damage, report within 30 days and gather the rental agreement, repair invoice, and card statement. For purchase protection, report before authorizing repairs and provide your original purchase receipt. For extended warranty, provide the original receipt and manufacturer warranty documentation. Submit all documents via americanexpress.com/benefits or americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits for CDW claims. Claims are paid by reimbursement after approval.
  • This card has no trip cancellation, trip interruption, or trip delay benefit. There is no emergency medical insurance abroad, no emergency evacuation, and no baggage insurance of any kind. Cell phone protection is absent: damage, theft, or loss of your phone is not reimbursed regardless of how the bill is paid. Return protection is also not included. The card's coverage stops at three areas: secondary rental car CDW up to $50,000, purchase protection for 90 days up to $1,000 per claim, and extended warranty for eligible items.
  • No. Cell phone protection is not included with the Blue Cash Everyday card. Paying your monthly phone bill with this card does not activate any coverage for screen damage, theft, or loss. Out-of-pocket screen repair on a flagship smartphone typically runs $200 to $450. A full replacement can exceed $1,200. If you want cell phone protection from an AmEx card, you need a card that specifically lists it as a benefit.
  • No. The Blue Cash Everyday is not part of the American Express Baggage Insurance Plan. Lost, stolen, or damaged luggage on any trip is not covered by this card. AmEx baggage insurance is available on higher-tier cards including the Gold, Green, Platinum, and certain co-branded travel cards. If your airline's liability does not cover your loss, the full amount remains your responsibility.
  • Purchase Protection covers eligible items charged to the Blue Cash Everyday against theft and accidental damage for 90 days from the purchase date, up to $1,000 per claim and $50,000 per calendar year. Coverage runs through AMEX Assurance Company with no deductible. To file, call 1-800-333-2639, provide your original purchase receipt and card statement, and describe the loss or damage. Mysterious disappearance (items lost without a documented theft or damage event) is not eligible.
  • Yes. The Extended Warranty benefit adds one year to eligible manufacturer warranties of five years or less. Coverage runs through AMEX Assurance Company, up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 per calendar year. The item must be purchased with the Blue Cash Everyday card. Keep the original purchase receipt and manufacturer warranty documentation: you will need both to file a claim during the extended period. Items with original warranties longer than five years are not eligible.
  • No. Trip cancellation is not included with the American Express Blue Cash Everyday. If you need to cancel a trip due to illness, a family emergency, or severe weather, all non-refundable costs remain your financial responsibility. This card was built for everyday cashback on groceries, gas, and online shopping, not travel protection. If trip cancellation coverage is important to you, consider pairing this card with a dedicated travel card or a standalone travel insurance policy before departure.
