Our opinion on Savor Student Cash Rewards Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

No trip cancellation. No emergency medical. No evacuation. The Capital One Savor Student card delivers cash back on dining and streaming, not travel protection. Cancel your flight for illness, weather, or any covered reason and every non-refundable dollar is gone. A single ER visit abroad runs $10,000 to $80,000 on average, and this card covers none of it. Premium travel cards typically carry $10,000 trip cancellation, $100,000 emergency medical, and unlimited evacuation. If you travel domestically on short trips with existing health coverage, the gap matters less. If you're studying abroad or booking international travel, a standalone travel insurance policy is not optional.

What works on travel
  • $0 annual fee: no cost for a card that carries no travel protection overhead
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation: all non-refundable prepaid costs are at your expense if you cancel for any reason
  • No emergency medical abroad: every hospital bill outside the US is entirely out of pocket
  • No evacuation benefit: a medical air ambulance from abroad runs $100,000 to $300,000 with no coverage here
  • No trip delay: meals, lodging, and transportation during delays are not reimbursed
  • No baggage coverage: delayed or lost luggage gets no reimbursement from this card

Quality, not just caps

Trip cancellation

Not covered
No trip cancellation exists on this card. A $2,000 non-refundable trip cancelled for illness, weather, or any other reason is entirely at the cardholder's expense.

Medical fees abroad

Not covered
No emergency medical insurance exists on this card. Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is the cardholder's responsibility. Most US health plans do not cover care outside the United States.

Medical repatriation

Not covered
No evacuation coverage. An air ambulance from a remote international location can exceed $200,000. This card provides zero coverage for that scenario.

Great cash back, limited credit line

Easy to use and love the cash back rewards. Only wish the available credit would replenish quicker after you make payments.

No travel perks to speak of

The card doesn't offer a ton in the way of travel perks. No travel-specific perks or protections. Good rewards for dining and streaming but I had to buy CDW at the rental counter in Mexico because the card has nothing. Found out the hard way that it's a rewards card only.

Solid for building credit, not for travel

Student cards don't typically offer additional perks since their primary goal is to build credit. I wish the card had trip cancellation — I lost $800 on a flight when I got sick. Had to just eat it. Good card for everyday spending but if you're traveling internationally, you need a separate policy.

FAQ

What people ask about the Savor Student Cash Rewards

  • The Capital One Savor Student card does not include travel insurance benefits. There are no trip cancellation, emergency medical, trip delay, or baggage benefits to activate. This is a cash back rewards card for students, not a travel insurance card. For travel protection, purchase a standalone travel insurance policy before your trip. The only protection benefit that requires activation is Mastercard ID Theft Protection — enroll free at mastercardus.idprotectiononline.com.
  • Since this card carries no travel insurance or purchase protection, there is no cardholder coverage roster to speak of. For Mastercard Global Service emergency assistance, all cardholders including authorized users on the account can call 1-800-627-8372 in the US or collect +1-636-722-7111 from abroad. This line provides emergency card replacement, lost card services, and local referrals — not insurance claims. Mastercard ID Theft Protection covers the primary cardholder and requires individual enrollment.
  • The Capital One Savor Student card does not include rental car CDW coverage. Capital One's help center confirms that rental car insurance is available only to cards branded as World Elite Mastercard, Visa Infinite, Visa Signature, or Discover. This student card does not meet that threshold. At the rental counter, you must either purchase the agency's collision damage waiver or rely on your personal auto insurance if it extends to rentals. Do not skip CDW assuming this card will cover you — it will not.
  • There are no insurance claims available with this card. It carries no travel insurance, no rental car CDW, and no purchase protection. For travel emergencies, call Mastercard Global Service at 1-800-627-8372 (US) or collect +1-636-722-7111 from abroad. For ID theft monitoring and resolution services, enroll at mastercardus.idprotectiononline.com and contact them directly if you identify suspicious activity. Any travel losses, rental car damage, or purchase theft are your financial responsibility.
  • This card does not cover trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical expenses abroad, medical evacuation, trip delay reimbursement, missed connections, baggage delay, lost or stolen luggage, travel accident insurance, hotel theft, rental car collision damage (CDW), roadside assistance, purchase protection, extended warranty, cell phone protection, price protection, or return protection. It is a cash back rewards card with no traditional travel or purchase insurance benefits. For international travel, a standalone travel insurance policy is essential.
  • Yes. This card has no emergency medical coverage abroad. Every dollar of any hospital bill outside the United States is entirely your responsibility. Most US health plans do not cover international emergency care, and Medicare covers zero dollars abroad. A single ER visit in Europe or Japan averages $10,000 to $80,000. For any international travel, purchase a travel insurance policy that includes emergency medical coverage. Standalone policies with $100,000 in emergency medical coverage start around $30 to $50 for a one-week trip.
  • No. The Capital One Savor Student card does not include cell phone protection. Theft or accidental screen damage to your phone is not covered regardless of whether you pay your monthly bill with this card. Replacing a flagship smartphone out-of-pocket runs $800 to $1,300. If cell phone protection matters to you, look at cards that include it as a built-in benefit — several mid-tier and premium cards offer $600 to $1,000 in coverage with a $25 to $50 deductible.
  • This card is not sufficient for international travel protection. It has no trip cancellation, no emergency medical, no evacuation, no baggage coverage, and no rental car CDW. For any international trip — whether studying abroad, visiting family, or vacationing — you need a standalone travel insurance policy. A one-week international policy with $100,000 emergency medical, trip cancellation, and evacuation coverage costs roughly $40 to $80 depending on destination and age. The Savor Student is excellent for earning cash back on dining and streaming. Travel protection must come from elsewhere.
  • The Capital One Savor Student card review consistently points to strong rewards for the right user: 3% on dining, entertainment, streaming, and groceries with no annual fee. For travel itself, the value is more limited. Capital One Travel portal perks such as price drop protection, price match, and flexible cancellation on portal bookings add some convenience, but these are booking features, not insurance. If you travel internationally or rent cars, this card needs to be paired with separate coverage. For domestic students who primarily spend on food and streaming and want to build credit, the card is excellent in its lane.
