Our opinion on Chase Chase Freedom Rise® Travel Insurance

Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Trip cancel included. Zero medical. Here is what that gap actually costs a Freedom Rise cardholder. The trip cancellation benefit is a genuine surprise on a $0 card: up to $1,500 per person, eight covered reasons including illness and severe weather, zero deductible. The medical coverage does not exist. Travel and Emergency Assistance will connect you with a local doctor, but every dollar of the bill is yours. Most cardholders assume the phrase 'travel assistance' means insurance. It does not. A single ER visit in Mexico or Europe averages $5,000 to $40,000. Standalone travel insurance starts at $100,000 per person for emergency medical on international trips. If you travel outside North America without separate health coverage, the $1,500 cancellation cap is useful, but the zero medical coverage is the real exposure.

What works on travel
  • $1,500 per person trip cancellation with no deductible: covers illness, severe weather, military orders, and 8 other reasons at $0 annual fee
  • $3,000 per person lost luggage reimbursement: covers both checked and carry-on bags lost or damaged by the carrier
  • Travel Accident Insurance up to $500,000 on common carrier flights: lump-sum benefit included at no annual cost
  • $300 baggage delay coverage: $100 per day after a 6-hour delay, up to 3 consecutive days, for essential purchases
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical coverage abroad: Travel and Emergency Assistance provides referrals only, all medical costs are the cardholder's responsibility
  • No trip delay reimbursement: hotel nights, meals, and transportation during any flight delay are entirely out of pocket
  • No emergency evacuation insurance: coordination-only assistance, no reimbursement for air transport costs
  • $1,500 per person cancellation cap: well below the $5,000 to $10,000 benchmark for mid-range travel cards
  • 3% foreign transaction fee: adds cost to every international purchase before any insurance gap arises

FAQ

What people ask about the Chase Chase Freedom Rise®

  • Most Chase Freedom Rise travel and purchase benefits activate automatically when you use your card for eligible purchases. For trip cancellation, baggage, and travel accident coverage, the Common Carrier ticket must be paid in whole or in part with your Chase Freedom Rise card or with Rewards earned on the card. For rental car coverage, you must decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter and pay the full rental with your card. No pre-registration is required. Benefits are attached to your card account and activate at the moment of the qualifying purchase.
  • Coverage definitions vary by benefit. For Trip Cancellation and Interruption, coverage extends to the cardholder and Covered Travelers whose trip was paid for with the Chase Freedom Rise card. Travel Accident Insurance covers the cardholder and accompanying family members traveling on the same itinerary. For Lost Luggage and Baggage Delay, coverage applies to the cardholder and traveling companions sharing the same booking. For the precise covered persons definition per benefit, refer to the Chase Freedom Rise Guide to Benefits effective October 2024.
  • The Chase Freedom Rise offers secondary CDW (collision damage waiver) coverage in the United States, meaning your personal auto insurance pays first and the card covers the remaining costs up to $60,000. Outside the United States, or if you carry no personal auto insurance, coverage becomes primary and you file directly with the benefit administrator. To activate: decline the rental agency's CDW at the counter and charge the full rental to your Chase Freedom Rise card. Rental period must not exceed 31 consecutive days. Exotic vehicles, motorcycles, cargo trucks, and peer-to-peer car rentals are excluded.
  • Claims are filed through chasecardbenefits.com, administered by Virginia Surety Company, Inc. (Assurant). For most travel benefits, notify the administrator within 20 days of the incident and submit supporting documents within 90 days. Auto rental claims allow 100 days for notification and 365 days for full documentation. For Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty, file within 90 days of the incident and submit documents within 120 days. Keep itemized receipts, your card statement showing the charge, and any official reports. Phone: 1-800-349-2691 for most benefits; 1-800-349-2634 for baggage and travel accident claims.
  • The three most significant gaps: no emergency medical insurance abroad (Travel and Emergency Assistance provides referrals only, all bills are yours), no trip delay reimbursement (hotel and meals during a flight delay are out of pocket), and no emergency evacuation coverage. Trip cancellation does not cover pre-existing conditions within 60 days before booking, epidemics, change of mind, or pregnancy beyond 26 weeks. Rental car coverage excludes exotic vehicles, motorcycles, and peer-to-peer rentals. Purchase Protection does not cover mysterious disappearance without documented theft, motorized vehicles, or items purchased for resale.
  • Eight covered reasons: accidental injury or illness requiring medical attention, death of the covered traveler or a family member, severe weather within 50 miles of the departure airport or destination, a named storm warning, a terrorist incident within 25 miles of the travel area in the 30 days before departure, a U.S. government travel warning against terrorism issued within 10 days before departure, a change in military orders, and an organized labor strike disrupting public transportation by 20% or more. The maximum is $1,500 per person and $6,000 per trip. Pre-existing conditions and known events at booking are excluded.
  • Yes. If your checked bag is delayed more than 6 hours after your scheduled arrival, the Chase Freedom Rise reimburses essential purchases at $100 per day for up to 3 consecutive days — a maximum of $300 per trip. Covered items include clothing, toiletries, and phone chargers (one per type). Electronics, cameras, and jewelry are excluded. Report the delay to the carrier before leaving the airport and obtain written confirmation — this documentation is required. File at chasecardbenefits.com within 20 days. Coverage is secondary to the carrier's liability.
  • No. The Chase Freedom Rise does not include emergency medical insurance. Travel and Emergency Assistance (available 24/7 at 1-800-349-2691) can refer you to English-speaking doctors, but every dollar of the bill is your responsibility. A single emergency room visit abroad can cost $5,000 to $40,000. An air evacuation from a remote destination can exceed $100,000. If you travel internationally, a standalone travel medical insurance policy addresses this gap directly and typically costs $30 to $60 for a one-week international trip.
  • For short domestic trips, the $0 annual fee card provides a useful safety net: trip cancellation, lost luggage, and rental car coverage. For international travel outside North America, the card has serious limitations: no emergency medical insurance, no evacuation coverage, no trip delay reimbursement, and a 3% foreign transaction fee on every purchase. The $1,500 per person cancellation cap is also below the $5,000 to $10,000 benchmark for international itineraries. A standalone travel insurance policy would fill the medical, evacuation, and delay gaps at a fraction of the cost of one out-of-pocket ER bill.
  • No. The Chase Freedom Rise does not include cell phone protection. Accidental damage, screen repairs, and theft of your phone are not covered through this card's benefit program. Screen repair for a flagship smartphone typically costs $300 to $500; full replacement runs $800 to $1,300. If cell phone coverage matters to you, consider paying your monthly phone bill with a card that includes this benefit — several no-annual-fee cards now offer cell phone protection with a $50 deductible.
