Our take on travel insurance for the Chase United Explorer

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Cancel covered. No medical abroad. Here's what that gap means on a United itinerary. You're choosing a card for upcoming travel on United flights. The Chase United Explorer Card trip cancellation covers $1,500 per person and $6,000 per trip maximum for Common Carrier costs: flights, trains, cruises. Eight covered reasons apply, including illness, severe weather, named storm warning, military orders, and organized strike, at zero deductible. The medical picture is different. There is no emergency medical benefit, no evacuation coverage, and no reimbursement for a hospital visit outside the United States. A single ER visit in Japan or Western Europe runs $15,000 to $60,000. Standalone travel insurance covers emergency medical from $100,000 per person for international trips. Filing a trip claim goes through chasecardbenefits.com or 1-800-350-2919 within 20 days of the incident, with itemized receipts and a card statement showing the Common Carrier charge required.

What works on travel
  • $3,000 lost baggage per person: covers checked bags and carry-on, with a $500 sub-limit for jewelry and watches and a separate $500 sub-limit for cameras and electronic equipment
  • $1,500 trip cancellation per person, $6,000 per trip: eight covered reasons including illness, severe weather, named storm warning, military orders, and organized strike. Zero deductible
  • $500 trip delay per ticket after 12 hours or an overnight stay: covers meals, lodging, toiletries, and medication
  • $500,000 common carrier travel accident insurance: accidental death and dismemberment on scheduled airlines, trains, buses, and water conveyances. A separate $100,000 24-hour travel accident benefit applies throughout the trip
  • $100 per day baggage delay after 6 hours: up to 3 days ($300 maximum), covers clothing and toiletries
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical abroad: zero reimbursement for hospital bills, doctor visits, or emergency dental care outside the United States. A real ER visit abroad runs $15,000 to $60,000
  • No emergency evacuation: medical air transport back to the United States can cost $100,000 to $350,000. This card covers none of that
  • Trip cancellation capped at $1,500 per person: a $4,000 international trip leaves $2,500 per person uncovered. Common Carrier costs only: hotel deposits and prepaid tours are not reimbursable
  • Pre-existing conditions excluded with a 60-day lookback: any illness treated or diagnosed within 60 days before your initial deposit date is not covered
  • Trip delay trigger at 12 hours: most equipment failures and weather delays are rebooked or resolved before hour 12. Premium cards trigger at 6 hours

Lost my checked bag on a United flight, filed the lost luggage claim, took about 6 weeks but got reimbursed for $1,800 in contents. Not painless but it worked.

How to file a Chase United Explorer claim

1

Step 1: File as soon as possible within the deadline

Visit chasecardbenefits.com or call 1-800-350-2919 (internationally: collect 001-214-503-2953). Deadlines vary: trip cancellation and interruption require contact within 20 days; trip delay within 60 days; lost luggage within 20 days of the loss; rental car damage within 100 days of the incident; travel accident within 20 days of the loss.

2

Step 2: Gather all required documents

For trip cancellation or interruption: travel itinerary, card statement showing the Common Carrier charge, documentation confirming the covered reason (medical records, physician statement, employer letter, military orders), and cancellation or refund policies from each supplier. For lost luggage: written confirmation that the claim was filed with the Common Carrier, and copies of original receipts for replacement items. For rental car damage: accident report form, initial and final Rental Car Agreement, repair estimate and itemized repair bill, two photographs of the damaged vehicle, and police report if filed.

3

Step 3: Submit all documents within the deadline

Submit all requested documents within 90 days of the incident for trip benefits (365 days for rental car). Virginia Surety Company, Inc. (Assurant) will review and notify you of their decision. Some cardholders report clean approvals in three to four weeks. Others describe repeated document requests before resolution. If denied, request the specific reason in writing and address each point. File online at chasecardbenefits.com for fastest initial submission.

FAQ

Chase United Explorer card: travel insurance and benefits FAQ

  • Most Chase United Explorer Card travel benefits activate automatically when you pay for your trip with the card. For trip cancellation and interruption, charge all or a portion of your airline, train, or cruise fare to your United Explorer Card, and coverage begins at the time of your initial deposit or booking date. For rental car coverage, decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter and pay the full rental with your card. Trip delay and lost luggage benefits also activate when you charge the common carrier fare to your Account. No pre-registration is required for any benefit, though you can optionally register warranty-eligible purchases at chasecardbenefits.com.
  • Coverage extends to the primary cardholder and their Immediate Family Members for most benefits. Immediate Family Members include your spouse or domestic partner, children and stepchildren (including adopted children), parents (including stepparents), brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, domestic partners, and legal guardians or wards. For most travel benefits, Immediate Family Members do not need to be traveling with the cardholder for coverage to apply. The trip delay benefit uses a narrower definition: spouse or domestic partner and legally dependent children under 26 only. Coverage applies when the cardholder's name appears on an eligible card issued in the United States.
  • The Chase United Explorer Card offers primary CDW (collision damage waiver) coverage worldwide. This means if your rental car is damaged or stolen, you file your claim directly with the benefit administrator, without involving your personal auto insurance first. Coverage applies for rentals up to 31 consecutive days in the US and most foreign countries, up to $60,000. To use this benefit, decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter and charge the entire rental to your United Explorer Card. File your claim at chasecardbenefits.com or call 1-800-350-2919 within 100 days of the incident.
  • All claims go through chasecardbenefits.com or by calling 1-800-350-2919, administered by Virginia Surety Company, Inc. (Assurant) since October 2024. Deadlines vary by benefit: trip cancellation and interruption require contact within 20 days; trip delay within 60 days; lost luggage within 20 days of the loss; rental car damage within 100 days. They will ask for a card statement showing the Common Carrier charge, travel itinerary, and documentation specific to your claim. Some cardholders report clean approvals in three to four weeks. File the day the incident happens, not the day you get home.
  • The three largest gaps are emergency medical expenses abroad, emergency medical evacuation, and the low trip cancellation limit. The card has no emergency medical coverage outside the United States and no evacuation benefit. Trip cancellation is capped at $1,500 per person and covers Common Carrier costs only: hotel deposits and prepaid tours not booked through a Common Carrier are not reimbursable. Pre-existing conditions are excluded with a 60-day lookback period before your initial booking date. Trip delay requires a 12-hour delay before reimbursement begins. Cell phone protection is not included.
  • Yes. The Chase United Explorer Card does not include emergency medical expense coverage abroad. There is no reimbursement for hospital bills, doctor visits, or emergency dental treatment incurred outside the United States. The card provides Travel and Emergency Assistance Services for coordination and referrals only, but all costs for actual medical treatment remain your responsibility. A single hospital night in Japan or Western Europe averages $10,000 to $40,000. For any international travel, a standalone travel insurance policy covering emergency medical from $100,000 per person is worth considering.
  • No. The Chase United Explorer Card does not include cell phone protection. If your phone is damaged, stolen, or destroyed, the card's benefits do not cover repair or replacement costs. Screen repairs typically run $200 to $400 at authorized repair shops. Purchase protection does cover items bought with the card within 120 days of purchase, but only if the phone itself was purchased with this card within that window. Monthly wireless bill payments do not activate any coverage.
  • No. The Chase United Explorer Card trip cancellation benefit excludes pre-existing conditions, defined as any illness, disease, or medical condition for which treatment was recommended or received within the 60 days before your initial deposit or booking date. If you cancel a trip due to a condition first diagnosed or treated within that 60-day window, the claim will be denied. Taking prescription medication for a controlled condition during the 60-day period is not automatically considered a pre-existing condition. There is no pre-existing condition waiver available under this benefit.
  • Yes, the Chase United Explorer Card includes several travel insurance benefits: trip cancellation and interruption at $1,500 per person and $6,000 per trip maximum for Common Carrier costs, trip delay reimbursement at $500 per ticket after a 12-hour delay, and lost luggage reimbursement at $3,000 per person for both checked bags and carry-on. The card does not include emergency medical expense coverage abroad or emergency evacuation coverage. The card's strongest travel insurance benefit is its primary rental car CDW coverage, worldwide, up to $60,000, for rentals up to 31 days.
  • The rental car benefit excludes a substantial list of vehicle types. Motorcycles, mopeds, motorbikes, and scooters are not covered. Cargo vans, trucks with open cargo beds other than standard pick-up trucks, and passenger vans with more than 12 people including the driver are excluded. Limousines are also excluded. Exotic vehicles or any vehicle with a dealer or manufacturer suggested retail price over $125,000 are excluded. Antique cars over 20 years old or not manufactured for 10 or more years are excluded. Rentals exceeding 31 consecutive days or arranged through peer-to-peer car sharing platforms are not covered.
