Our opinion on HSBC Elite World Elite Mastercard Travel Insurance

Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Strong AD&D. Weak cancel. Here's what $495 a year actually delivers on a trip gone wrong. The $1 million travel accident benefit is genuine: triggered on any common carrier, full dismemberment schedule, no deductible. The trip cancellation coverage does not match the annual fee. $1,500 per person, common carrier costs only. Your hotel, your tours, your Airbnb: none of it qualifies. Most cardholders assume $1,500 covers all prepaid travel. It covers your airline ticket. Emergency medical abroad lands at $2,500 per person via MasterAssist: secondary, $50 deductible, reimbursement only. A single ER visit in Tokyo starts at $10,000. If you carry this card for travel protection, the AD&D is impressive. The cancellation and medical coverage are not.

What works on travel
  • $1,000,000 travel accident insurance on common carriers: full loss schedule including limb, sight, speech, and hearing
  • Hotel and motel burglary protection at $1,500 per claim: requires forced entry, two claims per year allowed
  • $1,500 lost or damaged luggage: covers both checked and carry-on bags
Where travel breaks down
  • Trip cancellation capped at $1,500 per person: common carrier costs only, all hotel and tour costs are out of pocket
  • No trip delay benefit: meals, lodging, and transport during any delay are entirely the cardholder's expense
  • Emergency medical limited to $2,500 secondary via MasterAssist: you advance the full bill, $50 deductible applies
  • No emergency evacuation coverage: MasterAssist arranges logistics only, all costs remain the cardholder's responsibility

What does HSBC Elite World Elite Mastercard Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

Coverage applies to Common Carrier costs only: your airline ticket, not the trip. A $5,000 non-refundable trip with $1,500 in flights and $3,500 in hotels and tours recovers $1,500 at most. The $3,500 in non-carrier costs is unrecovered.

Deductible : No deductible

Entire cost of Common Carrier fare(s) must be charged to the HSBC Elite World Elite Mastercard If frequent flyer miles or certificates used, at least $1.00 or the full amount must be charged to the account Covered trip must include at least one overnight stay away from primary residence Destination must be more than 75 miles from primary residence Trip must not exceed 60 days in duration Cancellation or interruption must be due to a covered reason

Pays the non-refundable Common Carrier fare up to $1,500 per insured person if the trip is cancelled before departure or interrupted after departure. Common Carrier means airline, train, cruise, or bus: hotels, tours, and independently booked activities are not reimbursable under this policy. Covered reasons: your death, accidental injury, disease, or physical illness (or that of an immediate family member or traveling companion); change in military orders; jury duty or subpoena; financial insolvency of the Common Carrier. The entire cost of the transportation must be charged to the account. Pre-existing conditions excluded (60-day lookback).

Baggage claim paid in full, no pushback

My baggage was stolen at the airport. I filed a claim with Marsh, provided the police report and receipts. Got the full $1,500 without any argument. Marsh handled it professionally.

$1,500 trip cancel on a $495 card is a joke

For $495 a year, the trip cancellation at $1,500 is embarrassing. The Chase Sapphire Reserve gives you $10,000 for $550. HSBC clearly hasn't updated these limits in years.

Lost $3,000 on a Europe trip cancellation

Had to cancel a Europe trip worth $6,000. Only got $3,000 back: two travelers at $1,500 each. The rest was lost. No medical emergency coverage whatsoever. Had to buy separate travel insurance.

FAQ

What people ask about the HSBC Elite World Elite Mastercard

  • Most HSBC Elite travel benefits activate automatically when you charge the entire cost of your common carrier ticket to your card. For Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage (underwritten by Federal Insurance Company/Chubb), the fare for your airline, train, cruise, or bus ticket must be charged to your HSBC Elite World Elite Mastercard. If you used frequent flyer miles or certificates, at least $1.00 must be charged to the account. For Mastercard benefits like Baggage Delay, Lost Luggage, Purchase Assurance, and MasterRental CDW, simply pay with the card and decline the rental agency's CDW at the counter. No pre-registration is required.
  • For HSBC-underwritten benefits (Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Travel Accident Insurance): the primary cardholder, spouse or domestic partner, and dependent children. For Travel Accident Insurance, dependent children includes those under 19, or under 25 if enrolled full-time at an accredited institution. For MasterAssist Medical Protection: the cardholder, spouse, and unmarried dependent children under age 26. For Mastercard benefits (Purchase Assurance, Extended Warranty, Cell Phone Protection, MasterRental): the account holder and authorized users of the eligible account. Authorized users are not covered for all benefits: verify per benefit section in the Guide to Benefits.
  • The MasterRental benefit (underwritten by New Hampshire Insurance Company, an AIG company) covers physical damage and theft of a rental vehicle for up to 31 consecutive days. To use it: charge the entire rental to your HSBC Elite card, decline the rental agency's collision/damage waiver at the counter, and rent the vehicle in your own name. Coverage is secondary in the United States: your personal auto insurance pays first, and MasterRental covers the remainder. Outside the US, if you have no other applicable coverage, it becomes primary. Loss of use charges are covered up to $500 per incident. Excluded vehicles include trucks, sport utility trucks, motorcycles, and antique cars.
  • There are two separate claim processes. For HSBC Travel Insurance benefits (Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Travel Accident, underwritten by Chubb): call 866-977-5098 for questions or 855-378-9448 to file. Administrator is Marsh Sponsored Programs. Notify within 20 days of the incident and submit complete proof of loss within 90 days. For Mastercard benefits (Baggage Delay, Lost Luggage, Hotel Burglary, Purchase Assurance, Extended Warranty, Cell Phone, MasterRental CDW, Price Protection): call 1-800-Mastercard (1-800-627-8372) or visit www.mycardbenefits.com. Report within 90 days and submit documentation within 120 days. Keep itemized receipts, original itinerary, carrier confirmation letters, and your card statement showing the charge.
  • Key gaps: no trip delay benefit (meals and lodging during any delay are out of pocket), no emergency medical evacuation coverage beyond $10,000 in MasterAssist transport costs (all costs are the cardholder's responsibility), and emergency medical abroad is capped at $2,500 secondary via MasterAssist (a real ER visit runs $10,000 to $80,000). Trip cancellation covers common carrier costs only: your hotel, tours, and non-carrier prepaid travel are not reimbursable. Pre-existing conditions are excluded with a 60-day lookback. The MasterRental CDW is secondary in the US, and does not cover personal liability. No return protection or event ticket protection.
  • Partially, and at a very limited level. MasterAssist Medical Protection provides up to $2,500 per covered individual for emergency medical and dental expenses during a covered trip. Coverage is secondary: your own health insurance pays first, then MasterAssist covers the difference up to $2,500. A $50 deductible applies per trip. Emergency illness benefits are capped at $500 per day. Reimbursement only: you advance the full amount and file afterward. A single ER visit in Japan or Western Europe typically costs $10,000 to $80,000. For trips outside the US, a dedicated travel medical insurance policy is strongly recommended.
  • Secondary in the United States. MasterRental pays on a secondary basis: your personal auto insurance must pay first, then the card covers the remaining costs including deductible. One exception: if you are outside the United States and have no other applicable insurance coverage, MasterRental becomes primary automatically. Loss of use charges from the rental company are covered up to $500 per incident. To activate the benefit, decline the rental agency's CDW at the counter and charge the full rental to your HSBC Elite World Elite Mastercard.
  • Yes. Cellular Wireless Telephone Protection covers stolen or damaged phones up to $800 per claim, subject to a $50 deductible. Coverage is limited to two claims per 12-month period. To qualify, your monthly cellular phone bill must be charged to your HSBC Elite World Elite Mastercard. Coverage begins the first day of the calendar month after the payment posts. Lost phones or phones that mysteriously disappear are not covered: only stolen (with police report filed within 48 hours) or damaged devices qualify. Cosmetic damage and minor screen cracks under 2 inches that do not affect the ability to make calls are excluded.
  • No. Pre-existing conditions are explicitly excluded from Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage (Policy #9907-39-62, Federal Insurance Company/Chubb). A pre-existing condition is any illness, disease, or accidental injury for which medical advice, diagnosis, care, or treatment was recommended or received within the 60 days prior to your coverage effective date. This 60-day lookback is standard for this issuer. If you or a traveling companion has a condition that was treated or diagnosed in the past 60 days and that condition causes you to cancel, the claim will be denied.
  • The Travel Accident Insurance pays up to $1,000,000 for accidental loss of life, limb, sight, speech, or hearing while riding as a passenger on a common carrier (airline, train, cruise ship, or bus) or courtesy transportation (free shuttle to/from the airport or rental agency). The full $1,000,000 benefit pays for accidental death or total loss of both hands, feet, or sight. Loss of one hand, foot, or sight of one eye pays 50% of the principal sum. Loss of thumb and index finger pays 25%. Underwritten by Federal Insurance Company (Chubb), Policy #9907-39-61. The loss must occur within one year of the accident.
