Our opinion on HSBC Premier Travel Insurance

Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

$1M accident. No medical. Here is what that gap costs on an international trip. The HSBC Premier World Mastercard delivers one of the highest travel accident (AD&D) payouts at this price point: $1,000,000 per covered person on a common carrier. The Chubb backing is real, and the same Federal Insurance Co. master policies cover this card as the HSBC Elite at $495 per year. Most cardholders assume a $95 card with Chubb insurance includes emergency medical. It does not. No emergency medical coverage exists on this card, and no emergency evacuation either. A single hospitalization abroad runs $15,000 to $80,000 on average: all of that is the cardholder's responsibility. Trip cancellation is capped at $1,500 per person, which covers a short domestic trip but falls short on any international itinerary above $3,000. If you travel internationally without a separate travel insurance policy, the medical gap is the exposure that matters most, not the cancellation limit.

What works on travel
  • $1,000,000 travel accident (AD&D) coverage on common carriers: exceptionally high for a $95 annual fee card, backed by Federal Insurance Co. (Chubb)
  • $1,500 per person trip cancellation and interruption: covers illness, death, jury duty, military callup, and weather with no deductible
  • $1,500 lost or damaged luggage per incident: covers both checked and carry-on bags, filed through Marsh Sponsored Programs
  • $250 baggage delay benefit: triggers at 4 hours from scheduled arrival, covers clothing, toiletries, and medication
  • $1,500 Hotel/Motel Burglary: covers personal effects stolen from your hotel room by forced entry
  • Same Chubb master policies as the HSBC Elite ($495/yr): identical insurance protection at $400 less per year
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical coverage abroad: a health scare abroad means every dollar of hospital bills is the cardholder's responsibility
  • No emergency evacuation benefit: an air evacuation from a remote destination can exceed $100,000 with no coverage from this card
  • No standalone trip delay coverage: meals, lodging, and incidentals during a flight delay are entirely out of pocket
  • $1,500 trip cancellation cap per person: below market standard for international travel where non-refundable bookings routinely exceed $3,000
  • Secondary CDW only: your personal auto insurance pays first on a rental collision
  • Pre-existing conditions excluded with a 60-day lookback

Strong value when the fee is waived

For clients who already have the Premier banking relationship and get the card fee waived, this is incredible value. $1M travel accident coverage and Chubb backing on baggage claims is not something you usually get free.

Claim processed correctly via Marsh

Trip interrupted due to a family emergency. Filed the claim via Marsh, provided flight change receipts and documentation. The $1,500/person reimbursement came through in about 4 weeks. Chubb processed it correctly.

$1,500 cancel limit is not enough for international travel

The travel insurance itself hasn't been updated in years. $1,500 per person is laughable for international travel in 2024. And closing the card when you lose Premier status is a nightmare.

No medical coverage: completely useless in an emergency abroad

No medical emergency coverage at all. I had a health scare abroad and had to pay everything out of pocket. The HSBC card was completely useless in that scenario.

How to file an HSBC Premier World Mastercard benefit claim

1

Step 1: Report the incident immediately

For baggage loss or delay: report to the airline at destination and obtain a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) before leaving the airport. For theft: file a police report within 48 hours. For trip cancellation or interruption: document the covered reason immediately (physician statement, official notice, airline confirmation). For rental car damage: photograph the vehicle and report to the rental agency before returning the keys.

2

Step 2: Contact Marsh within 20 days

Call 1-800-627-8372 within the United States or +1-636-722-7111 collect from abroad to initiate your claim with Marsh Sponsored Programs. For MasterRental CDW claims, file at www.mastercard.us/cardbenefits within 45 days of the incident. For Travel Accident Insurance, notify within 20 days of the accident. File the day the incident occurs, not when you return home.

3

Step 3: Submit documentation on time

Keep all itemized receipts, your card statement showing the charge, original travel itinerary, rebooked itinerary if applicable, PIR from the airline, and any physician statements or official notices. Submit all documentation to Marsh Sponsored Programs within the deadline specified in your Guide to Benefits. Some cardholders report clean approvals in 3 to 4 weeks. Others describe document resubmission loops before final determination.

FAQ

What people ask about the HSBC Premier

  • Most travel benefits on the HSBC Premier World Mastercard activate automatically when you purchase your common carrier ticket (flight, train, or cruise) using the card. There is no pre-registration or enrollment required. For trip cancellation and interruption, the common carrier portion of your trip must be charged to the card. For rental car coverage, you must charge the full rental to the card and decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter. Benefits are administered by Marsh Sponsored Programs.
  • Coverage under the HSBC Premier World Mastercard extends to the primary cardholder and their immediate family members traveling on a common carrier ticket purchased with the card. Immediate family typically includes a spouse or domestic partner and dependent children. For the $1,000,000 Travel Accident benefit, coverage applies to covered persons traveling on the ticketed common carrier. The exact definition of covered persons varies by benefit, so review your Guide to Benefits for the specific definitions that apply to each guarantee.
  • The HSBC Premier World Mastercard offers secondary CDW (collision damage waiver) coverage through the MasterRental Program. Secondary means your personal auto insurance pays first in the event of a collision or theft, and the card covers remaining costs. To use this benefit, you must decline the rental company's collision damage waiver at the counter and charge the full rental to your card. Coverage applies for rentals up to 31 days and excludes exotic vehicles, trucks over 2 tons, motorcycles, and RVs.
  • Claims for trip cancellation, interruption, baggage, and purchase protection are filed through Marsh Sponsored Programs. Call 1-800-627-8372 within the United States or +1-636-722-7111 collect from abroad to initiate a claim. For baggage claims, report the loss or delay to the airline first and obtain a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). For trip cancellation, file within 20 days of the event and submit a physician's statement or airline confirmation. Keep all itemized receipts and the card statement showing the original charge. Some cardholders report clean approvals in 3 to 4 weeks; others describe document resubmission loops before final approval.
  • The most significant gap on the HSBC Premier World Mastercard is the complete absence of emergency medical coverage and emergency evacuation. If you have a medical emergency abroad, every dollar of hospital bills is your responsibility. There is also no standalone trip delay benefit, so meals and lodging during a flight delay are out of pocket. Trip cancellation is capped at $1,500 per person, below market standard for international trips. Pre-existing conditions are excluded with a 60-day lookback period, and rental car CDW is secondary rather than primary.
  • No. The HSBC Premier World Mastercard does not include any emergency medical coverage. If you require emergency treatment outside the United States, all medical costs are your responsibility. Mastercard Global Service (1-800-627-8372 or +1-636-722-7111 collect) can provide referrals to local medical providers, but it does not pay any bills. A single emergency hospitalization abroad averages $15,000 to $80,000. If you travel internationally without a separate travel insurance policy, this is the coverage gap that matters most on this card.
  • No. Cell phone protection is not included with the HSBC Premier World Mastercard. All cell phone repair and replacement costs are the cardholder's responsibility. A typical screen repair runs $200 to $400; a full replacement can reach $800 to $1,200. The card's Purchase Protection benefit may cover a phone stolen or accidentally damaged within 90 days of the date of purchase up to $1,000, but only if the phone itself was purchased with the card.
  • No. Pre-existing conditions are excluded from the HSBC Premier World Mastercard trip cancellation and interruption benefits. The policy applies a 60-day lookback period: any condition for which you received treatment, had symptoms, or took prescription medication in the 60 days before purchasing your travel is considered pre-existing and excluded. This covers many common health conditions. If pre-existing condition coverage matters to your trip, a standalone travel insurance policy with a pre-existing condition waiver is available from third-party providers.
  • The HSBC Premier World Mastercard includes trip cancellation and interruption at $1,500 per person, baggage delay reimbursement up to $250 when your bag is delayed 4 or more hours, lost or damaged luggage coverage up to $1,500 per incident, and Travel Accident Insurance of $1,000,000 on common carriers. The card also includes Hotel/Motel Burglary protection ($1,500) for personal effects stolen from your hotel room by forced entry. All benefits are backed by Federal Insurance Co. (Chubb) under Policy #9907-39-62 and administered by Marsh Sponsored Programs. There is no emergency medical coverage or evacuation benefit.
