Our opinion on Revolut Metal Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Exceptional medical limit. Narrow activation window. Here is what that actually means when you need to file. The Revolut Metal plan benefits include a €10,000,000 emergency medical cap: one of the highest figures on any subscription card on the market, but coverage is reimbursement-based, which means you advance the full hospital bill before you see a cent back. XCover may be able to arrange direct billing subject to the hospital's acceptance. Trip cancellation covers 17 reasons including illness, job loss, armed forces recall, and travel document theft, with a 10% excess capped at €50 per claim. The catch that cardholders discover too late: the trip must be paid for using your Revolut Metal plan, and the maximum trip length is 90 days. Most cardholders assume any trip they take qualifies. It does not. If you booked the flight on a different card, you are not covered, even if you use your Revolut Metal for everything else on the trip. Filing goes through xcover.com/claim; XCover Assist handles medical emergencies 24/7 at +44 23 8144 9963. Claims prioritized within 7 days of the incident. Expect to provide booking invoices, receipts, and a detailed description of the event.

What works on travel
  • €10,000,000 emergency medical limit: genuinely uncapped in practice, with XCover able to arrange direct billing subject to hospital acceptance
  • 17 trip cancellation reasons: illness, job loss, natural disaster, armed forces recall, legal proceedings, travel document theft
  • 4-hour trip delay trigger: one of the shorter thresholds available, covers meals, accommodation, communications, and transportation
  • 4-hour baggage delay trigger: reimburses essential items up to €400 with receipts
  • Medical evacuation arranged and managed by XCover Assist 24/7: no upfront payment required for evacuation logistics
Where travel breaks down
  • Reimbursement-only medical in practice: you may advance the full hospital bill before XCover can guarantee direct billing, which can run tens of thousands of dollars abroad
  • Trip must be paid with Revolut Metal card: one foreign-card booking voids the entire coverage and the activation condition is strict and poorly disclosed
  • 90-day maximum trip length: trips exceeding 90 consecutive days are excluded in full, not prorated
  • Pre-existing conditions excluded with 12-month lookback: any condition that caused a consultation, symptoms, or required medication in the prior 12 months is out
  • Benefit limits denominated in EUR: actual USD equivalents are not published publicly and you must dig through the app to find them

What does Revolut Metal Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

Coverage applies only if the trip is paid with your Revolut Metal account. Booking even one flight on a different card, even if you charge everything else to Revolut, voids coverage for the entire trip.

Deductible : No deductible

Trip must be paid using your Revolut Metal account Trip must not exceed 90 consecutive days A 10% excess is deducted from the claim amount, up to a maximum of €50 per claim The event causing cancellation must occur after the trip was booked

Reimburses non-refundable trip costs (both flight and non-flight), cancellation fees, and rebooking fees if you or a ticket holder must cancel due to a covered event. Limit is €5,000 per person per trip. A 10% excess applies, deducted from the claim amount up to a maximum of €50 per claim. The trip must be paid using your Revolut Metal account.

  • Employer relocation of 150km+ after trip was booked

Strict activation condition caught me off guard

My travel insurance claim was denied because I hadn't booked the flight with my Revolut Metal card. I paid with a different card and just used Revolut for other expenses. The activation condition is strict.

USD benefit amounts impossible to find before booking

I tried to find out exactly how much my trip cancellation was covered for before booking. Impossible: the app shows general info but no dollar amounts. Had to dig through the terms PDF to find the limits. Frustrating lack of transparency.

FAQ

What people ask about the Revolut Metal

  • Revolut Metal travel insurance activates automatically for any trip paid for using your Revolut Metal plan — meaning the trip booking (flights, trains, or other common carrier fare) must be charged to your Revolut account. No pre-registration or opt-in is required. The coverage begins when you leave your primary residence to start the trip and ends when you return home. One critical condition: if you book your outbound flight with a different card and pay only ancillary expenses with Revolut, you are not covered. The activation condition is strict — the common carrier fare must be charged to your Metal account for the insurance to apply.
  • Coverage extends to the Revolut Metal plan holder as the primary insured, plus ticket holders defined as the spouse or cohabitant and children (including stepchildren, foster children, and adopted children) up to age 17 who are travelling with the Metal plan holder. Coverage applies to all covered persons per beneficiary, except for the emergency accommodation benefit during a trip interruption, which applies once for all beneficiaries combined. Close relatives and family members are defined broadly in the policy and include grandparents, siblings, in-laws, aunts, uncles, and legal guardians, but their coverage applies specifically as a trigger for cancellation or interruption reasons rather than as additional insured persons.
  • The Revolut Metal offers secondary car hire excess reimbursement, not a primary CDW (collision damage waiver). In practice, this means you must purchase at least the basic CDW coverage offered by the rental company at the counter, not decline it entirely. If your rental is damaged or stolen, the rental company's insurer handles the claim first, and Revolut Metal reimburses the excess or deductible charged to you, up to a maximum of €2,000 for rentals up to 31 days. Peer-to-peer car sharing services like Turo are excluded. For domestic rentals, the rental company must be located more than 200km from your primary residence.
  • For medical emergencies requiring hospitalization or repatriation, contact XCover Assist at +44 23 8144 9963 before any medical arrangements are made — unauthorized arrangements are only reimbursed at what XCover would have paid. For all other claims, go to xcover.com/claim to start the process. Claims filed within 7 days of the incident are prioritized. At minimum, you will need a detailed description of the event. XCover will request booking invoices and receipts during the review process. For luggage theft, a Property Irregularity Report from the airline or a police report is required. Do not admit liability or make any payment on the rental damage without written consent from XCover for car hire claims.
  • The most impactful exclusions are: pre-existing medical conditions with a 12-month lookback (any consultation, symptoms, or medication in the prior 12 months disqualifies the condition); trips exceeding 90 consecutive days; and any trip where the common carrier fare was not paid with your Revolut Metal account. Business trips are excluded entirely. Extreme sports including BASE jumping, heli-skiing off-piste, rafting class V rapids, and scuba diving below 30 meters are excluded. Trip delay and cancellation do not cover adverse weather or strikes that were announced before your trip was booked. The car hire excess benefit does not apply to peer-to-peer rentals or rentals within 200km of your primary residence.
  • Yes. The Revolut Metal plan includes emergency medical coverage abroad up to €10,000,000, which is exceptionally high for a subscription card. Coverage applies when illness or injury requires treatment to prevent serious harm and cannot safely be managed on an outpatient basis before you return home. For higher-cost treatments or hospitalization, XCover Assist may be able to arrange direct billing with the hospital, but this is subject to the hospital's acceptance. In practice, most claims go through reimbursement. Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded under the 12-month lookback rule. Emergency dental is covered separately up to €300 with a 10% excess.
  • Yes. Medical evacuation, medical repatriation, and emergency flights are arranged by XCover Assist at no cost limit stated, subject to medical necessity. You must contact XCover Assist before any repatriation arrangements are made — if you organize transport without prior authorization, XCover will only reimburse what they would have paid for the same arrangement. If you are hospitalized for more than 72 hours, or have a sudden life-threatening condition, travel costs for a friend or family member to travel to you are also covered. Repatriation of remains in the event of death is arranged by XCover Assist. Dependents aged 17 and under have their return costs covered.
  • No. The Revolut Metal plan does not include a dedicated cell phone protection benefit. There is no coverage for accidental damage, cracked screens, or mechanical failure of your phone outside of a trip. During a covered trip, your phone may qualify under the personal property benefit if it is lost, stolen, or damaged, but the per-item cap is €250 with an original receipt, and a police report is required for theft claims. A screen replacement for a flagship smartphone typically costs $300 to $500 — well above the per-item cap. For dedicated phone coverage, a standalone device protection plan would close this gap.
  • The Revolut Metal plan's €10,000,000 emergency medical limit, 17 trip cancellation covered reasons, and 4-hour trip delay trigger are genuinely strong for a $16.99/month subscription. The weak points are the strict activation condition (the trip must be paid with your Metal account), the 90-day maximum trip length, and the secondary car hire coverage that requires purchasing the rental company's basic CDW first. If your primary use case is a single international trip per year under 90 days, paid fully through Revolut, the coverage provides real value. For travelers with longer trips, pre-existing conditions, or who book through multiple cards or travel agents, the gaps are material and a standalone travel insurance policy would fill them.
  • The Revolut Metal covers 17 trip cancellation reasons: illness, injury, or death (including Covid-19) of you or a ticket holder; individual quarantine caused by a contagious disease; a life-threatening illness of a close relative not travelling with you; your home becoming uninhabitable; being summoned for legal proceedings; natural disaster or carrier cancellation with a 24-hour delay; a traffic accident on departure date; involuntary unemployment; new permanent employment; employer relocation of 150km or more; active first responders being recalled; armed forces recall; missing at least half the trip due to carrier delay, strike, or natural disaster; lost or stolen travel documents; death of a family member or service animal; medical inability to receive a required immunization; and a legal notice to attend an adoption proceeding. A 10% excess applies per claim, capped at €50.
