Our opinion on Robinhood Gold Card Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Trip cancel. No medical. That gap is the whole story for anyone planning to travel internationally with this card. The benefit covers up to $2,000 per person for non-refundable Common Carrier tickets when your trip gets cancelled due to illness, death of an immediate family member, or carrier insolvency. That is the full list of covered reasons. Two. Most cardholders assume a flight attendant shortage, a hurricane warning, or a work conflict counts. It does not. Robinhood Gold credit card benefits for travel are useful for domestic trips booked on major airlines, but they leave a real hole for international travelers: zero emergency medical, zero evacuation, zero trip delay, zero baggage coverage. If you are traveling internationally without separate health insurance, this card offers no financial backstop for the risks that actually cost money.

What works on travel
  • $2,000 trip cancellation per person: covers non-refundable Common Carrier fares when illness or carrier insolvency forces cancellation
  • $2,000 trip interruption per person: same conditions apply mid-trip as during pre-departure cancellation
  • $1,000 travel accident benefit: AD&D coverage while riding as a passenger on a Common Carrier
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical coverage: every hospital bill abroad is entirely the cardholder's responsibility
  • No trip delay benefit: flight delayed 12 hours means zero reimbursement for meals or hotel
  • No baggage insurance: lost or delayed luggage has no reimbursement
  • No emergency evacuation: the card offers referral assistance only, not a cent toward transport costs
  • Only 2 cancellation reasons covered: illness or death and carrier insolvency. Job loss, weather, terrorism not eligible

What does Robinhood Gold Card Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

Only 2 covered reasons: illness or death of the cardholder or immediate family member, and carrier insolvency. Weather, job loss, jury duty, and most other cancellation reasons are not covered.

Deductible : No deductible

Death, accidental bodily injury, disease, or physical illness of the cardholder or an immediate family member: must be verified by a physician and must prevent travel Default of the Common Carrier due to financial insolvency Entire cost of the trip must have been charged to the covered Account and/or rewards program associated with the Account

Covers up to $2,000 per insured person for non-refundable Common Carrier ticket costs. Covered reasons are limited to two: death, accidental bodily injury, or illness of the cardholder or an immediate family member (verified by a physician), and default of the Common Carrier due to financial insolvency. Pre-existing conditions are excluded under the 60-day look-back definition. The benefit reimburses the non-refundable amount actually paid.

What's not covered
  • Pre-existing conditions (60-day look-back period)
  • Weather delays, job loss, terrorism, military deployment: not covered reasons
  • Participation in interscholastic or professional sports, racing, uncertified scuba diving
  • Traveling against physician advice or in the third trimester of pregnancy
  • Suicide, attempted suicide, or intentionally self-inflicted injuries
  • Declared or undeclared war
No emergency medical insurance on this card. Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is yours. A serious ER visit in Europe or Asia runs $10,000 to $80,000.

No emergency medical coverage. Travel and Emergency Assistance provides referrals to local English-speaking doctors and hospitals, but all medical costs are the cardholder's responsibility.

No evacuation coverage. Emergency evacuations from remote areas can cost $100,000 or more, entirely at the cardholder's expense.

No emergency evacuation insurance. Travel and Emergency Assistance can help arrange emergency transportation logistics, but all transportation costs are the cardholder's responsibility.

Deductible : No deductible

Same two covered reasons as trip cancellation: illness or death verified by physician, or carrier insolvency Entire cost of the Common Carrier fare must be charged to the covered Account Interruption may occur before or after departure

Covers up to $2,000 per insured person for trip interruptions occurring either on the way to the departure point or after departure. The same two covered reasons apply as for trip cancellation: illness or death of the cardholder or immediate family member, and carrier financial insolvency. Coverage applies to the non-refundable Common Carrier fare charged to the card.

What's not covered
  • Same exclusions as trip cancellation: pre-existing conditions, sports, suicide, war, pregnancy in third trimester, traveling against physician advice

No trip delay benefit. This card does not cover delays of any length. Meals, lodging, and incidentals during a delay are entirely out of pocket.

No missed connection benefit. This benefit is not included with this card.

No standalone early return benefit.

No baggage delay benefit.

No baggage loss or damage insurance.

$1,000 maximum is well below market standard. Most travel cards cover $250,000 to $1,000,000. This benefit pays at most $1,000 for accidental death or dismemberment on a Common Carrier.

Deductible : No deductible

Riding as a passenger on or entering or exiting a Common Carrier Traveling to or from the airport immediately before or after a Common Carrier trip Entire cost of the Common Carrier fare must be charged to the covered Account

Travel Accident Insurance (AD&D) covers up to $1,000 for accidental loss of life, two or more members, sight, speech, or hearing while riding as a passenger on a Common Carrier.

What's not covered
  • Emotional trauma, mental or physical illness, bacterial or viral infection
  • Suicide or self-inflicted injuries
  • Declared or undeclared war
  • Being in, entering, or exiting any aircraft while acting as a pilot or crew member

No hotel theft protection.

2024

3% flat cashback is the real selling point

The 3% cashback on everything without categories is unbeatable if you just want a simple card. No foreign transaction fees is a huge plus for travel. The insurance side is honestly just okay for a card at this price point, but the cashback alone makes it worth carrying.

2024

Great for everyday spending, weak on travel protection

No foreign transaction fees plus 3% back is a genuinely useful combo for travel spending. But do not rely on this card for travel insurance: there is no trip delay, no baggage coverage, and the CDW is secondary for domestic rentals. Fine as a daily driver, not as a travel safety net.

$60 effective annual fee that people miss

$5 per month for the Gold subscription means you are paying $60 per year for this card, not $0 as they imply. At $60 the coverage should be better: no trip delay, no baggage, no medical abroad. The travel accident max is $1,000 which is basically nothing. The cashback is real but price it honestly.

FAQ

What people ask about the Robinhood Gold Card

  • The Robinhood Gold Card travel benefits activate automatically: there is no pre-registration required. For Trip Cancellation and Interruption coverage, you must charge the entire cost of your Common Carrier fare (flights, train, bus, or cruise tickets) to your card. Partial payment on the card qualifies. For Auto Rental CDW, use the card to initiate and complete the full rental transaction and decline the rental agency's CDW or LDW at the counter. Accepting the rental company's coverage cancels the card benefit. Benefits apply as long as your active Gold Card account is in good standing.
  • Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, and Travel Accident Insurance cover the primary cardholder, their spouse or domestic partner, and dependent children. Dependent children include those under 19 living with the cardholder, those under 25 who are full-time students, and those who are permanently dependent due to a physical or mental condition. Authorized users registered with the account are also included. For Auto Rental CDW, only the primary renter named on the rental agreement and any additional drivers permitted by that agreement are covered.
  • The Robinhood Gold Card offers secondary CDW for domestic rentals and primary CDW for international rentals. Domestically, your personal auto insurance pays first and the card covers your deductible and any unreimbursed charges. Outside the US, the card is primary: no personal insurance involvement required. To use this benefit, charge the entire rental to the card and decline the rental company's CDW or LDW option at the counter. Coverage applies to most standard vehicles for up to 15 consecutive days in the US and 31 days internationally. Excluded vehicles include exotic cars, trucks, motorcycles, and vans. Israel, Jamaica, the Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland are excluded.
  • The claim administrator depends on the benefit. For Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, or Travel Accident: contact CBSI Card Benefit Services at 1-855-307-9251 or go to myclaimsagent.com/cbs within 20 days of the incident. For Auto Rental CDW: call 1-800-348-8472 immediately; no later than 45 days after, with the claim form postmarked within 90 days. For Purchase Security: call 1-800-553-4820 within 60 days. For Extended Warranty or Return Protection: call 1-800-551-8472 within 60 days. Keep your billing statement and all original receipts. File the day the incident happens.
  • The Robinhood Gold Card does not cover emergency medical expenses abroad, emergency evacuation, trip delays, baggage delays, or lost and damaged luggage reimbursement. Trip cancellation only applies in two scenarios: illness or death of the cardholder or immediate family member, and financial insolvency of the Common Carrier. Job loss, weather events, and most other cancellation reasons are not covered. For rentals, exotic cars, trucks, motorcycles, and cars in Israel, Jamaica, Ireland, and Northern Ireland are excluded. Purchase Security excludes mysterious disappearance. Cell phone protection is not included.
  • The Robinhood Gold Card is not sufficient as a standalone travel insurance solution for international trips. It provides no emergency medical coverage, no evacuation benefit, no trip delay reimbursement, and no baggage insurance. A single emergency room visit abroad can cost $10,000 to $80,000. The card's primary CDW for international rentals is genuinely useful, and the $2,000 trip cancellation applies for Common Carrier tickets if illness or carrier insolvency forces the cancellation. For international travel, consider a dedicated travel insurance policy to cover medical emergencies, evacuation, and broader trip cancellation reasons.
  • No. Cell phone protection is not included with the Robinhood Gold Card. The card's Purchase Security covers retail purchases against theft and damage for 90 days from purchase date: if your phone is stolen within 90 days of buying it with the card, a claim may apply. But cracked screens, drops, water damage, and malfunctions on older devices are not covered. There is no monthly-bill-triggered cell phone protection benefit on this card.
  • No. Pre-existing conditions are explicitly excluded from Robinhood Gold Card trip cancellation and interruption. The policy uses a 60-day look-back period: any injury, disease, or illness that occurred or manifested during the 60 days immediately before your ticket purchase date is considered pre-existing and will not be covered. A condition is considered to have manifested if you received medical care or treatment, or if symptoms existed that would cause a reasonable person to seek medical attention. Active prescriptions for a controlled condition during that 60-day period do not automatically count, but any active treatment does.
  • The Robinhood Gold Card makes most sense for cardholders who value the 3% flat cashback on all purchases with no foreign transaction fees. The $50 effective annual fee (requiring a $5/month Robinhood Gold subscription) buys trip cancellation for Common Carrier tickets in two narrow scenarios, primary CDW internationally, and solid purchase and warranty protection with Return Protection included. What it does not buy: emergency medical abroad, trip delay, baggage coverage, or a meaningful travel accident benefit at $1,000 maximum. Frequent international travelers should pair this card with a standalone travel insurance policy.
