Our opinion on U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

The Altitude Reserve delivers real coverage in four places and leaves a costly gap in one. Trip cancellation pays up to $2,000 per person for prepaid common carrier costs only: flights, trains, and intercity buses charged to the card. That restriction matters in practice. Hotel deposits, tour fees, and activity prepayments fall outside this benefit regardless of the cancellation reason. A cardholder cancelling a $5,000 trip may recover the $1,200 in airfare and nothing on the remaining $3,800. Trip delay performs better than most. After a 6-hour delay, the card pays up to $500 for meals, lodging, and local transportation. A 6-hour trigger is competitive for premium travel cards; the Altitude Connect, by comparison, uses a 12-hour threshold. Lost luggage covers up to $3,000 for bags lost, stolen, or damaged by the common carrier during transit. Carry-on bags are included. Cameras and electronics are subject to sub-limits listed in the benefit terms. The emergency evacuation benefit provides up to $10,000 for medical evacuation when pre-authorized by the 24-hour assistance line. That number sounds substantial until you check the real cost: an international evacuation from a remote location typically runs $50,000 to $150,000. Premium travel cards in this tier pay $100,000 for the same scenario. Most Altitude Reserve cardholders assume trip cancellation covers all prepaid non-refundable expenses. The Virginia Surety Co. (VSC) benefit terms say otherwise: common carrier costs only. The card provides no emergency medical coverage abroad. Travel and Emergency Assistance Services coordinates referrals to local doctors and hospitals, but all treatment costs remain the cardholder's responsibility. Filing travel claims goes through VSC at 1-800-992-6029. Have the original itinerary, card statement showing the charge, and documentation of the covered reason ready before you call. File the day the incident happens, not the day you get home.

What works on travel
  • $2,000 trip cancellation per person: covers prepaid common carrier tickets for covered reasons including illness and severe weather
  • $500 trip delay after 6 hours: competitive threshold for a premium card. Covers meals, lodging, and local transport during the delay
  • $3,000 lost luggage: covers bags lost, stolen, or damaged by the common carrier. Carry-on bags are included
  • $500,000 travel accident insurance: accidental death and dismemberment at the Visa Infinite level for common carrier incidents
  • $10,000 emergency evacuation: a real dollar benefit for pre-authorized medical evacuations, not just a referral line
Where travel breaks down
  • Trip cancellation covers common carrier costs only: hotel deposits, tour fees, and activity prepayments are excluded regardless of the cancellation reason
  • No emergency medical coverage abroad: Travel and Emergency Assistance provides referrals only. An ER visit in Europe or Japan runs $5,000 to $60,000 with no card coverage
  • Emergency evacuation capped at $10,000: actual evacuations from remote international locations cost $50,000 to $150,000. Premium cards in this tier offer $100,000 for the same benefit
  • No baggage delay coverage: essential purchases while waiting for a delayed bag are the cardholder's full financial responsibility

What does U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

$2,000 cap and common carrier restriction are the primary limitations of this benefit. A cardholder with $5,000 in prepaid travel may recover only the airfare portion.

Deductible : No deductible

Full cost of common carrier transportation must be charged to the Altitude Reserve Trip must be cancelled before departure due to a covered reason Common carrier means scheduled air, rail, or bus service operated for hire requiring a purchased ticket

Trip cancellation covers prepaid common carrier transportation costs charged to the Altitude Reserve, up to $2,000 per person per covered trip. Coverage applies to flights, trains, and intercity bus tickets purchased with the card. Hotel deposits, tour fees, and activity prepayments are outside this benefit regardless of the cancellation reason. Virginia Surety Co. (VSC) administers claims at 1-800-992-6029.

Recommended : $10,000

What's not covered
  • Hotel reservations, tour deposits, and activity fees are not covered regardless of cancellation reason
  • Fear of travel without a qualifying covered event
  • Pre-existing conditions within the standard definition period
  • Known events that existed before the ticket was purchased
Largest financial gap on this card. A single ER visit in Japan or Europe averages $5,000 to $60,000. A serious hospitalization can exceed $100,000. No card coverage applies.

No emergency medical coverage abroad. Travel and Emergency Assistance Services provides referrals to local doctors and hospitals only. All medical costs are the cardholder's responsibility. A single ER visit in Japan or Europe typically runs $10,000 to $80,000.

$10,000 is well below realistic international evacuation costs of $50,000 to $150,000. Useful for partial reimbursement but not sufficient as standalone medical evacuation coverage.

Deductible : No deductible

Medical evacuation must be pre-authorized by the benefit line before transportation is arranged Evacuation must be medically necessary as determined by the benefit administrator Call the 24-hour emergency line before arranging any evacuation transportation Original trip transportation must have been charged to the Altitude Reserve

Emergency evacuation covers medically necessary transportation up to $10,000 when pre-authorized by the 24-hour benefit line. Pre-authorization is required before arranging evacuation transportation. The benefit also includes repatriation of mortal remains up to $1,000. The 24-hour assistance line is 1-800-847-2911 (US) or +1-303-967-1096 collect from international locations.

Recommended : $100,000

What's not covered
  • Evacuations not pre-authorized by the benefit administrator
  • Evacuations for conditions that are not medically necessary
  • Evacuation costs exceeding the $10,000 per-occurrence limit

Deductible : No deductible

Trip interruption must occur due to a covered reason after departure Common carrier return transportation must be charged to the Altitude Reserve Original trip transportation must have been purchased with the card

Trip interruption covers prepaid transportation costs to return home early, up to $2,000 per person. The same covered reasons as trip cancellation apply. Coverage is limited to common carrier transportation costs charged to the card. Hotel, tour, and activity costs incurred during an interrupted trip are outside this benefit.

Recommended : $10,000

What's not covered
  • Hotel, tour, and activity costs not reimbursed
  • Pre-existing conditions within the standard definition period
  • Known events that existed before the original ticket was purchased
6-hour trigger and $500 limit are both at the strong end for premium travel cards.

Deductible : No deductible

Common carrier delay must reach 6 continuous hours Original transportation must have been charged to the Altitude Reserve Expenses must be reasonable: lodging, meals, and local transport during the delay period

Trip delay covers reasonable meals, lodging, and local transportation expenses up to $500 when a common carrier delay reaches 6 continuous hours. The 6-hour trigger is more cardholder-friendly than the 12-hour threshold on many travel cards. A 5-hour delay produces no coverage. Expenses must be reasonable and documented.

What's not covered
  • Delays under 6 continuous hours produce no coverage regardless of actual expenses
  • Expenses reimbursed by the common carrier
  • Delays caused by the cardholder's own actions

No missed connection coverage. This benefit is not included with the Altitude Reserve. Rebooking costs and expenses from a missed connection are the cardholder's responsibility.

No early return benefit. This benefit is not included with the Altitude Reserve. Additional transportation costs from cutting a trip short are not reimbursed beyond trip interruption coverage.

Baggage delay absent despite the card's premium positioning at $400/year. A traveler waiting 24 hours for a delayed bag has no card-based reimbursement for essentials.

No baggage delay coverage. This benefit is not included with the Altitude Reserve. Essential purchases during a baggage delay are the cardholder's full financial responsibility.

$3,000 per trip is solid coverage. PIR filing at the airport is the most common reason claims are denied: do not leave the baggage area without one.

Deductible : No deductible

Bag must be lost, stolen, or damaged while in the custody of a common carrier Original transportation must have been charged to the Altitude Reserve A Property Irregularity Report (PIR) must be filed with the carrier before leaving the baggage claim area

Lost luggage reimburses up to $3,000 per covered trip for bags lost, stolen, or damaged by the common carrier during transit. Carry-on baggage is included in this benefit. Cameras and electronics are subject to sub-limits listed in the benefit terms. Coverage applies when the common carrier is responsible: the bag must be lost, misdirected, or damaged in the carrier's possession.

What's not covered
  • Cameras, electronics, and jewelry may be subject to sub-limits per benefit terms
  • Items stolen from unattended baggage not in carrier custody
  • Normal wear and tear or inherent product defects
  • Baggage shipped separately from the cardholder

Deductible : No deductible

Incident must occur during common carrier travel Original transportation must have been charged to the Altitude Reserve Common carrier means scheduled air, rail, or bus service

Travel Accident Insurance provides up to $500,000 in accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) coverage for incidents occurring during common carrier travel. The $500,000 maximum applies to accidental death; dismemberment benefits are paid according to the AD&D schedule in the benefit terms. Coverage applies to the cardholder when travel is charged to the Altitude Reserve.

What's not covered
  • Incidents occurring outside common carrier travel
  • Self-inflicted injury or illness
  • War or military action

No hotel theft protection. This benefit is not included with the Altitude Reserve. Personal belongings stolen from a hotel room are not covered by this card.

Primary CDW paid $685 on a windshield claim

Filed a rental car claim after a rock hit my windshield in Southern California. Primary CDW means Hertz billed U.S. Bank directly: I just submitted the claim through eClaimsLine / Card Benefit Services. Got the $685 repair covered. Process documented step by step.

Trip delay paid $500 after 8-hour Denver delay

Trip delay benefit: stuck 8 hours in Denver. $500 is generous. Submitted hotel and meal receipts within 30 days, reimbursed fully. Virginia Surety / cbsi was efficient.

Trip cancellation: only flights covered, not hotels

Trip cancellation only covers transportation. I had to cancel a $4,000 trip: only the $800 in plane tickets was covered. The $3,200 in hotel and tours? Nothing. The fine print is brutal.

FAQ

What people ask about the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve

  • Travel insurance benefits on the Altitude Reserve activate automatically when you charge the relevant purchase to the card. For trip cancellation and interruption, the full cost of common carrier transportation must be purchased with the Altitude Reserve. For rental car CDW, decline the agency's CDW or LDW at the counter, then charge the full rental to the card: primary coverage activates immediately. Purchase protection and extended warranty apply automatically to eligible items charged to the card. No enrollment or registration is required for any benefit. For emergency evacuation, call the 24-hour assistance line at 1-800-847-2911 before arranging transportation: pre-authorization is required. For all other claims, contact Virginia Surety Co. (VSC) at 1-800-992-6029 as soon as the incident occurs.
  • The primary cardholder is covered under all Altitude Reserve insurance benefits. For trip cancellation and interruption, immediate family members, including spouse or domestic partner and dependent children under 22, are generally covered when the trip is charged to the card. For rental CDW, the cardholder and any additional driver listed on the rental agreement are covered. Travel Accident Insurance of $500,000 covers the cardholder during common carrier travel. Purchase protection and extended warranty cover items purchased by the primary cardholder. For questions about coverage extending to traveling companions or authorized users, contact the benefit administrator at 1-800-992-6029 before your trip to confirm the specific terms that apply to your situation.
  • The Altitude Reserve provides primary CDW (collision damage waiver) up to $75,000 for collision damage and theft on eligible rental vehicles. At the rental counter, decline the agency's CDW or LDW, then charge the full rental to the Altitude Reserve. Primary coverage means your personal auto insurer is not involved in any claim: Virginia Surety Co. (VSC) handles the claim directly through Card Benefit Services (eClaimsLine) and pays the rental agency. Coverage applies for up to 15 days on US rentals and 31 days on international rentals. Standard exclusions apply: exotic cars, motorcycles, trucks, and vans over 8 seats are not covered. Israel, Jamaica, Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland are excluded: confirm the full list with VSC at 1-800-992-6029 before booking a rental outside the US.
  • For trip cancellation or interruption, contact Virginia Surety Co. (VSC) at 1-800-992-6029 as soon as the incident occurs. You will need the original itinerary, the card statement showing the transportation charge, and documentation of the covered reason: a physician's statement for illness, the airline's written cancellation notice, or equivalent evidence. For rental CDW, photograph the vehicle before driving off the lot, report damage before returning the car, and contact 1-800-546-9806 to initiate the claim. For trip delay, keep all receipts for meals, lodging, and local transport and file within the deadline in the benefit terms. For purchase protection claims, contact 1-800-992-6029 and provide the purchase receipt and documentation of damage or theft. File the day the incident happens, not after you return home.
  • The Altitude Reserve does not include emergency medical coverage abroad. Travel and Emergency Assistance coordinates referrals to local providers, but all hospital and treatment costs remain the cardholder's responsibility. Emergency evacuation is available at up to $10,000 with pre-authorization, but that amount covers only a fraction of real international evacuation costs. Trip cancellation applies to prepaid common carrier transportation costs only: hotel deposits, tour fees, and activity prepayments are excluded regardless of the cancellation reason. Baggage delay coverage is not included. Cell phone protection is not available on this card. Standard vehicle exclusions (exotic cars, trucks, motorcycles) and country exclusions apply to the rental CDW benefit.
  • Yes. The Altitude Reserve primary CDW applies to international rentals for up to 31 days, compared to the 15-day limit for US rentals. Decline the agency's CDW at the counter, charge the full rental to the card, and primary coverage activates. Country exclusions apply: Israel, Jamaica, the Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland are excluded under the Visa Infinite CDW terms. Before booking an international rental, confirm the full exclusion list by contacting the benefit administrator at 1-800-992-6029. The 31-day international coverage window is longer than most competing cards, which cap at 15 days regardless of destination.
  • For regional or domestic evacuations, $10,000 provides meaningful partial coverage. For international evacuations, particularly from remote locations, it typically covers a small fraction of the actual cost. Medical evacuations from remote international locations regularly run $50,000 to $150,000 depending on distance and required medical equipment. Premium travel cards in this tier provide $100,000 for the same benefit. If you travel internationally to remote or medically underserved areas, supplemental travel insurance with emergency evacuation limits of $100,000 or more is worth considering alongside the Altitude Reserve's existing coverage. Call the 24-hour assistance line at 1-800-847-2911 before arranging any evacuation: pre-authorization is required for the benefit to apply.
  • For trips with significant non-refundable hotel, tour, and activity bookings beyond the flights, yes. The Altitude Reserve's trip cancellation covers common carrier transportation costs only: flights, trains, and bus tickets charged to the card. A $6,000 international trip with $1,500 in flights and $4,500 in hotels and tours yields a $1,500 reimbursement and nothing for the remaining $4,500 if you cancel. The card also provides no emergency medical coverage abroad: an ER visit overseas can reach $60,000 with no card reimbursement. A comprehensive travel insurance policy covering medical expenses of $100,000 or more starts around $100 to $200 per trip for two travelers. For domestic trips or international travel with flexible bookings, the card's built-in coverage is above average.
  • Yes. The US Bank Altitude Reserve provides primary CDW (collision damage waiver) on rental cars, up to $75,000. Primary coverage means your personal auto insurer is not involved in any damage claim: if collision damage or theft occurs, Virginia Surety Co. (VSC) handles the claim directly with no impact on your personal auto insurance record or premium. Decline the rental agency's CDW at the counter, charge the full rental to the card, and primary coverage activates automatically. Coverage applies for up to 15 days for US rentals and 31 days for international rentals. Standard vehicle and country exclusions apply: confirm the full exclusion list with VSC at 1-800-992-6029 before renting internationally.
  • Yes. The Altitude Reserve extends manufacturer warranties of three years or less by one additional year, up to $10,000 per claim. A laptop with a one-year factory warranty becomes a two-year warranty when purchased with the card. A refrigerator with a two-year factory warranty becomes a three-year warranty. Products with original manufacturer warranties longer than three years do not qualify for an extension. Used, rebuilt, or refurbished products are also excluded. To use the benefit, the full purchase price must be charged to the Altitude Reserve, and you should retain the original receipt and manufacturer warranty documentation. File extended warranty claims through the benefit administrator at 1-800-992-6029 as soon as the covered defect occurs during the extended warranty period.
