Our opinion on USAA Rewards Visa Signature Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

$1,500 cancellation. No medical abroad. Here's what that gap actually costs a member traveling internationally. So, you've booked a $4,200 trip to Spain, fully prepaid: flights, hotels, guided tours. The card reimburses up to $1,500 per person in non-refundable costs if illness, military orders, or a covered event cancels the trip before departure. The remaining $2,700 comes out of pocket. What the USAA visa signature benefits do not cover is any emergency medical cost abroad, and there is no evacuation benefit of any kind. Most cardholders assume travel insurance and medical coverage are the same thing. They are not. A single ER visit in Tokyo or Madrid runs $10,000 to $60,000 with no reimbursement available through this card. Standalone travel insurance with $100,000 in medical coverage starts at $80 to $150 for a two-week international trip. If you travel domestically or carry separate travel health insurance, the cancellation coverage is useful for a no-fee card. If you travel internationally without supplemental coverage, the medical gap is significant.

What works on travel
  • $1,500 trip cancellation per person: covers illness, military orders, severe weather, strike, supplier insolvency, and other standard covered reasons
  • $3,000 lost luggage reimbursement per trip: covers checked bags and carry-on items lost or damaged by the carrier
  • $500,000 travel accident insurance: accidental death or dismemberment on any common carrier (flight, cruise, train, bus) fully paid with the card
  • $300 baggage delay reimbursement: 4-hour threshold, $100 per day for up to 3 days for essential clothing, toiletries, and medication
  • $0 annual fee, $0 foreign transaction fee: full benefit access with no additional card cost
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical coverage abroad: all hospital costs are out of pocket. A single ER visit in most international destinations runs $10,000 to $60,000
  • No evacuation or repatriation benefit: emergency transport home is not covered. A transoceanic air ambulance can exceed $200,000
  • No trip delay benefit: meals and lodging during a flight delay longer than a few hours are not reimbursable
  • Trip cancellation cap of $1,500 per person: insufficient for multi-night trips with non-refundable hotels and tours above that amount
  • No missed connection coverage: rebooking costs from a missed connection caused by a delayed inbound flight are not covered

What does USAA Rewards Visa Signature Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

Deductible : No deductible

Trip must be cancelled before departure At least part of the trip cost must be charged to the USAA Rewards Visa Signature card Non-refundable prepaid costs only (refundable bookings are not eligible) Notification required within 20 days of the cancellation event Claim documentation required within 90 days of the cancellation date

Covers non-refundable prepaid travel costs up to $1,500 per person when a trip is cancelled for a covered reason before departure. Covered reasons include illness or injury to the cardholder or a travel companion, death, severe weather, military orders, a terrorist incident at the destination, carrier strike, and supplier insolvency. The card must be used to pay for at least part of the trip costs. Pre-existing conditions are excluded under a 60-day lookback rule.

Recommended : $10,000

What's covered
  • Non-refundable prepaid flights, hotels, tours, and cruises charged to the card
  • Illness or injury to cardholder or covered travel companion
  • Death of cardholder, travel companion, or immediate family member
  • Severe weather preventing departure
  • Military orders or deployment
  • Terrorist incident at the destination city
  • Carrier strike affecting scheduled transport
  • Supplier insolvency (airline, hotel, or tour operator)
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing conditions (medical conditions treated or diagnosed in the 60 days before the trip purchase date)
  • Known events at the time of trip booking (ongoing strikes, announced travel advisories)
  • Change of mind or voluntary cancellation
  • Work or business schedule conflicts
  • Financial default of the cardholder

No emergency medical coverage. The card includes Travel and Emergency Assistance, which provides referrals to local medical providers — but it does not pay any medical bills. All medical costs abroad are the cardholder's responsibility. A single ER visit in Japan or Europe typically runs $10,000 to $80,000.

What's not covered
  • All emergency medical treatment abroad
  • Hospitalization costs
  • Prescription drugs obtained abroad
  • Dental emergencies abroad

No emergency evacuation or repatriation benefit. Travel and Emergency Assistance provides referral services only — locating a medical facility or helping coordinate logistics. Commercial medical evacuation costs are entirely the cardholder's responsibility. A transoceanic air ambulance from Southeast Asia runs $200,000 to $300,000.

What's not covered
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Repatriation of remains
  • Air ambulance arrangements

Deductible : No deductible

Trip must have already begun Covered reason must occur after departure Notification required within 20 days of the interruption event Claim documentation required within 90 days

Covers non-refundable prepaid costs when a trip already underway is interrupted or cut short due to a covered reason, up to $1,500 per person. This shared benefit with Trip Cancellation covers the same triggers: illness, death, military orders, severe weather, terrorism, and supplier insolvency. Unused hotel nights and non-refundable return flights that cannot be changed are eligible. Pre-existing conditions are excluded under the 60-day lookback rule.

What's covered
  • Non-refundable unused hotel nights
  • Non-refundable return transportation costs
  • Prepaid tours or activities that cannot be refunded
  • Illness or injury requiring early return
  • Death of cardholder, travel companion, or immediate family member
  • Military orders requiring early return
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing conditions under 60-day lookback
  • Known events at time of booking
  • Voluntary early return without covered reason

No trip delay reimbursement. If your flight is delayed, all meals, lodging, and incidental transportation costs are your responsibility. Meals, lodging, and transportation during a delay are the cardholder's responsibility.

What's not covered
  • All meal and lodging costs during flight delays
  • Transportation costs incurred during delays
  • Overnight accommodation from delayed departures

No missed connection coverage. If a delayed inbound flight causes you to miss a connection, rebooking costs and expenses are not covered. Last-minute rebooking on a missed international connection can cost $300 to $800.

What's not covered
  • Rebooking fees from missed connections
  • Hotel costs when missing a connection results in overnight stay
  • Meals during a missed connection wait

No standalone early return benefit. Trip Interruption ($1,500 per person) covers the cost of cutting a trip short, but does not include a separate transportation benefit for emergency return flights above the combined cancellation and interruption cap. Additional transportation costs from cutting a trip short are not reimbursed above the $1,500 total per-person limit. A last-minute one-way flight home can cost $800 to $2,000.

What's not covered
  • Emergency return flights above the $1,500 per-person trip interruption cap
  • Voluntary early return without a covered reason

Deductible : No deductible

They work with you during difficult periods

USAA is extremely generous if you aren't able to make a payment during a difficult period — they work with you. The insurance benefits are solid for a no-fee card.

Primary rental coverage outside the US is huge

USAA Visa Signature has no foreign transaction fees and the rental car coverage is primary outside the US, which is huge for international trips. Worth keeping even if you have better rewards cards.

Claim denied after a month of waiting

I filed a claim for a wrong product received and USAA took a month to decide to deny the claim. The process was frustrating and the documentation requirements were excessive.

Rewards program not competitive

The rewards program is just not competitive. Other cards offer sign-up bonuses and better earning rates. I only keep it for the USAA relationship and the rental car coverage.

FAQ

What people ask about the USAA Rewards Visa Signature

  • No separate activation is required. Benefits are automatically tied to eligible purchases made with your USAA Rewards Visa Signature card. To trigger trip cancellation or interruption coverage, at least part of the prepaid travel cost must be charged to the card. For rental car CDW, the full rental must be billed to the card and you must decline the agency's own CDW at the counter. For baggage delay and lost luggage benefits, the flight must be paid for with the card. Keep your card statement and all travel receipts from the moment of booking — you will need both for any claim.
  • Coverage extends to the primary cardholder, a spouse or domestic partner, dependent children under 19 (or under 26 if enrolled full-time in school), and in most cases travel companions whose trip costs were fully charged to the card. For rental car CDW, the authorized driver listed on the rental agreement is covered, along with other authorized drivers. Coverage does not automatically extend to friends or family members who paid for their own portion of the trip separately. Check the specific benefit terms for each guarantee, as covered persons can vary between trip cancellation, baggage, and accident benefits.
  • When you pick up a rental car, decline the agency's collision damage waiver (CDW) or loss damage waiver (LDW) — paying for it yourself cancels out this card's benefit. Charge the full rental cost to your USAA Rewards Visa Signature card. Coverage is secondary in the US (your personal auto insurer pays first, the card covers the remainder) and primary outside the US (no personal insurer claim needed). Maximum rental duration is 31 consecutive days. Luxury vehicles, motorcycles, and trucks are excluded. If an accident happens, contact the benefit administrator at eclaimsline.com and file within the required claim period — you will need the rental agreement, damage report, and repair invoice.
  • Claims go through eclaimsline.com or by calling 1-844-288-2141. The filing deadline is typically 20 days from the date of the qualifying event, with full documentation required within 90 days. For trip cancellation, you will need: the original booking confirmations, non-refundability documentation from the airline or hotel, a doctor's statement for medical cancellations, and your card statement showing the purchase. For lost baggage, the Property Irregularity Report filed at the airport is mandatory. For purchase protection, an original receipt and a police report for theft are required. File the day the incident occurs — not the day you return home.
  • The three most significant gaps are emergency medical costs abroad, emergency evacuation, and trip delay reimbursement — none are included. If you fall ill in another country, every dollar of hospital treatment comes out of pocket. There is no evacuation benefit either, meaning air ambulance or emergency transport home is entirely uncovered. Other absences include trip delay reimbursement (meals and lodging during a delayed flight are not reimbursable), missed connection coverage, hotel theft protection, and standalone early return transportation. USAA membership is also required to hold this card, limiting access to military personnel, veterans, and their eligible family members.
  • Yes, if you travel internationally. The USAA Rewards Visa Signature does not include any emergency medical coverage abroad. The card's Travel and Emergency Assistance service provides referrals to local medical providers, but it does not pay any portion of your medical bills. A standard outpatient visit in Europe can cost $1,000 to $3,000; emergency hospitalization in Japan or Southeast Asia often runs $30,000 to $80,000. For international trips, a travel health insurance policy with at least $100,000 in emergency medical coverage is advisable. For domestic travel only, this gap is less material since US health insurance applies.
  • It depends on where you rent. Outside the United States, coverage is primary: you deal directly with the card benefit administrator if there is damage, and your personal auto insurance policy is not involved. In the United States, coverage is secondary: your personal auto insurer pays first, and this card covers whatever remains up to the vehicle's replacement value. For most domestic renters with comprehensive personal auto coverage, secondary CDW provides adequate protection. For international rentals, primary CDW is a genuine advantage — it avoids filing a claim that could affect your personal insurer's rates.
  • The USAA Rewards Visa Signature benefits include trip cancellation and interruption up to $1,500 per person, lost luggage reimbursement up to $3,000 per trip (checked and carry-on), baggage delay reimbursement up to $300 (4-hour threshold), and travel accident insurance of $500,000 on common carriers. For purchases, the card provides $10,000 per claim in purchase security for 90 days, extended warranty for an additional year on qualifying products (up to $1,000), and cell phone protection up to $1,000 over a 2-year window. Rental car CDW is secondary in the US and primary abroad, for up to 31 days. There is no emergency medical or evacuation coverage. The card has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee.
