Our opinion on American Express Blue Cash Preferred Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Zero travel insurance. For a card that costs $95 per year, the complete absence of trip cancellation, emergency medical, and baggage protection deserves an upfront disclaimer. Book a $3,000 flight with this card, cancel for a covered medical reason the week before departure, and zero comes back. Fall ill in Tokyo, and the $18,000 hospital bill is entirely out of pocket. Your checked bag disappears in Frankfurt, and the airline's liability caps are your only recourse. The American Express Blue Cash Preferred sits in the rewards category, not the travel protection category: the $95 fee buys the 6% grocery cashback and 6% streaming credit, not an insurance program. The Global Assist Hotline at 1-800-333-2639 provides emergency referrals and coordination when you are more than 100 miles from home, but it pays nothing. Cardholders who use this card on international trips, or who book any non-refundable travel, need a standalone travel policy to fill every gap this card leaves open.

What works on travel
  • Global Assist Hotline included: 24-hour emergency referral and coordination service for medical, legal, and travel emergencies when more than 100 miles from home
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation: illness, weather, or a family emergency trigger no reimbursement for non-refundable bookings before departure
  • No emergency medical abroad: a single ER visit outside the US runs $10,000 to $80,000 and this card pays zero
  • No trip delay benefit: meals, lodging, and personal expenses during any length of delay are entirely out of pocket
  • No trip interruption: cutting a trip short for any covered reason returns nothing from this card
  • No travel accident coverage: accidental death or dismemberment while traveling is not covered
  • No baggage coverage: the Blue Cash Preferred is explicitly excluded from the AmEx Baggage Insurance Plan

What cardholders say about the American Express Blue Cash Preferred

2024

Extended warranty saved $800 on TV repair

Bought a 65-inch TV for the bedroom. Original warranty was one year. Failed in month 14 with a backlight issue. Called AmEx Benefits and submitted the purchase receipt along with the manufacturer warranty documentation. They reimbursed the repair cost without any pushback. The extended warranty benefit is legitimate and it works.

2024

No travel coverage, cancelled trip cost $3,500

Had to cancel a non-refundable flight because of a medical issue. Called AmEx expecting trip cancellation coverage like on the Sapphire. Nothing. Zero. The Blue Cash Preferred has no travel insurance at all: no cancellation, no medical, no baggage. Great cashback card for groceries and streaming but you need a separate travel card for any trip you take seriously.

CDW worked but secondary means extra paperwork

Minor scrape on a rental in Denver. Declined the Hertz collision waiver and charged the rental to the Blue Cash Preferred. The CDW kicked in but as secondary coverage I had to first submit to my personal auto insurance and get a denial letter before AmEx Benefits would process the reimbursement. Took about six weeks total. Coverage was real, but be ready for the secondary claim step before AmEx pays anything.

How to file an Amex Blue Cash Preferred claim

1

Step 1: Contact AmEx Benefits

Call 1-800-333-2639 or visit americanexpress.com/benefits. For rental car claims, visit americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits. File the day the incident happens, not when you return home.

2

Step 2: Gather your documentation

For rental car damage: rental agreement, damage report, card statement. For purchase protection: original receipt and card statement; police report for theft. For extended warranty: original receipt and manufacturer warranty documentation. For return protection: original receipt and evidence the merchant declined the return.

3

Step 3: Submit proof on time

Submit all documentation promptly. Deadlines vary by benefit: typically 30 to 60 days for rental claims and 90 days for purchase and warranty claims. Keep the damaged item in case you are asked to return it for salvage review.

FAQ

What people ask about the American Express Blue Cash Preferred

  • No. The American Express Blue Cash Preferred does not include trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, lost baggage, emergency medical, or emergency evacuation coverage. The card's value is in its 6% cashback on US supermarkets and streaming services, not in travel protection. If you charge a $3,000 vacation to the Blue Cash Preferred and have to cancel, there is no reimbursement from the card. The Global Assist Hotline at 1-800-333-2639 provides emergency referral and coordination when you are more than 100 miles from home, but it pays nothing. For international or non-refundable travel, pair this card with a dedicated travel card or a standalone travel insurance policy.
  • Yes. The card includes secondary Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance through AMEX Assurance Company, covering collision damage and theft up to $50,000. Secondary means your personal auto insurance pays first, and the card covers what your policy does not, including your deductible, up to the $50,000 cap. To activate coverage, decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver (CDW) at the counter and charge the full rental to the card. Coverage applies for rental periods up to 30 consecutive days worldwide, with three country exclusions: Australia, Italy, and New Zealand.
  • Purchase Protection covers eligible items purchased with the card against theft and accidental damage for 90 days from the date of purchase, up to $1,000 per claim and $50,000 per calendar year. Coverage is provided by AMEX Assurance Company with no deductible. Mysterious disappearance (an item that vanished without evidence of theft or damage) is excluded. To file, contact AmEx Benefits at americanexpress.com/benefits or 1-800-333-2639.
  • Yes. Return Protection is included and reimburses up to $300 per eligible item and $1,000 per calendar year when an original merchant declines your return request. You have 90 days from the purchase date to make the return attempt. The item must be in original condition. Return Protection is one key benefit that differentiates the Blue Cash Preferred from the Blue Cash Everyday, which does not include this benefit. Contact AmEx Benefits at 1-800-333-2639 or americanexpress.com/benefits to file a claim.
  • Yes. The Extended Warranty benefit adds one additional year to eligible US manufacturer warranties of five years or less, up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 per calendar year. The item must be purchased with the Blue Cash Preferred card. Coverage begins when the original manufacturer warranty expires. Keep your original purchase receipt and manufacturer warranty documentation; you will need both to file a claim through americanexpress.com/benefits.
  • No. Cell phone protection is not included with the American Express Blue Cash Preferred. Screen damage, theft, and mechanical failure on your phone are not covered, regardless of whether you pay your monthly wireless bill with the card. For cell phone protection on an American Express card, consider cards that explicitly include this benefit, or a standalone device insurance plan.
  • The card has no trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, emergency medical coverage abroad, emergency evacuation, travel accident insurance, or baggage coverage. The Blue Cash Preferred is explicitly excluded from the American Express Baggage Insurance Plan. Cell phone protection is not available. Rental car CDW is secondary, meaning your personal auto insurer pays first. Purchase protection excludes mysterious disappearance and items above the $1,000 per-claim cap. Return protection is capped at $300 per item and $1,000 per year.
  • No, not purely for insurance. The $95 fee is justified primarily by the 6% grocery cashback on up to $6,000 in annual US supermarket spending (up to $360 back per year) and the 6% cashback on streaming subscriptions. The protection benefits come as a bonus: secondary CDW rental coverage, $1,000 purchase protection for 90 days, $300 return protection per item, and extended warranty on manufacturer-warranted purchases. The complete absence of trip cancellation, emergency medical, and baggage coverage means this card cannot function as your primary travel protection card.
