Delay only. No cancel, no medical. Here's what that thin layer means in practice for a $325 annual fee card. Your flight gets delayed 11.5 hours. The Gold card does not cover it. The amex gold travel insurance is limited to one benefit: trip delay reimbursement up to $300, triggered only after a full 12 hours from your scheduled departure. Most cardholders assume a $325 annual fee includes trip cancellation and emergency medical. It does not. No trip cancellation. No trip interruption. No emergency medical abroad. A $3,500 trip cancelled for illness, a family emergency, or a job loss receives $0 from this card. Standalone travel insurance that covers cancellation, interruption, and emergency medical starts at $100 per person for a domestic trip. If you fly internationally without separate coverage, this card leaves every major travel risk unaddressed.

What does American Express Gold Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

No trip cancellation on this card. A $3,500 trip cancelled for illness produces $0 reimbursement. For trip cancellation coverage, consider upgrading to the Amex Platinum ($10,000/person).

Trip cancellation is not included with the American Express Gold Card. There is no reimbursement for non-refundable trip costs if you must cancel before departure for any reason, including illness, job loss, or a family emergency.

No emergency medical coverage on this card. Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is yours. A serious ER visit in Europe or Japan runs $10,000 to $80,000.

How to file an Amex Gold card claim

Step 1: Notify AIG for trip delay

Call 1-844-933-0648 or file at aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress within 60 days of the covered loss. Submit written proof of loss within 180 days. Required documents: airline delay confirmation, carrier tickets, card charge receipt, and itemized expense receipts.
