Our opinion on Bilt Rewards World Elite Mastercard Travel Insurance

Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Weak travel. No medical, no evacuation. That gap turns the World Elite label into a false sense of security the moment you leave the country. The Bilt World Elite Mastercard travel insurance pays $5,000 per traveler for trip cancellation, but only for Common Carrier tickets and only three covered reasons: serious illness or death of the cardholder or a family member, or the carrier's financial insolvency. Your prepaid hotel and tours? Not covered. Most cardholders assume trip cancellation covers everything non-refundable. It does not. That $1,200 hotel block on a cancelled trip stays at the cardholder's loss if the reason is not on the list. No emergency medical means a $40,000 ER visit in Italy or Japan is out of pocket, every dollar. Standalone travel medical insurance starts at $100,000 per person for international trips. If you travel internationally without a separate health policy, keep that benchmark in mind.

What works on travel
  • $5,000 trip cancellation per traveler: covers Common Carrier costs for illness, death, or carrier insolvency
  • $200/day trip delay for up to 3 days: 6-hour trigger covers meals, lodging, entertainment, and pet boarding
  • Primary CDW at $50,000: files directly, no personal auto insurance involved
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical abroad: every hospital bill overseas is entirely the cardholder's responsibility
  • No emergency evacuation: a medevac from Southeast Asia runs $200,000 and this card provides zero coverage
  • Trip cancellation scope is Common Carrier only: hotel, tours, and non-refundable pre-paid experiences are not reimbursable
  • Only 3 covered cancellation reasons: job loss, weather, jury duty, and most standard reasons are not covered
  • Secondary trip delay and cancellation: Common Carrier or another source reimburses first

What does Bilt Rewards World Elite Mastercard Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

Common Carrier only scope means your prepaid hotel, vacation rental, and tour costs are never reimbursable under this benefit, regardless of the cancellation reason. A $3,000 hotel block on a cancelled trip stays at the cardholder's loss.

Deductible : No deductible

Entire Common Carrier fare must be charged to Covered Card and/or Bilt Rewards program Notify within 20 days of cancellation or interruption Submit all documents within 90 days

Covers the nonrefundable Common Carrier fare (flights, trains, cruises) up to $5,000 per Covered Traveler per Trip. Hotels, tours, and other prepaid non-Common Carrier travel are not reimbursable. Coverage is secondary. The full cost of the Common Carrier fare must be charged to the Covered Card. Coverage applies for illness, injury, or death of the covered traveler or a family member (verified by a licensed medical practitioner), or financial insolvency of the Common Carrier.

Recommended : $10,000

What's covered
  • Death or Accidental Bodily Injury of Covered Traveler, advised not to travel by licensed medical practitioner
  • Death or life-threatening illness of a Family Member requiring care and verified by licensed medical practitioner
  • Default of the Common Carrier resulting from financial insolvency
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing conditions (60-day lookback before fare purchase date)
  • Professional or intercollegiate sports, racing, speed contests, uncertified scuba diving
  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Traveling under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Third trimester pregnancy (seventh month or after)
  • Suicide or intentionally self-inflicted injuries
  • Declared or undeclared war (terrorism not excluded)
  • Emotional trauma, mental illness, pregnancy complications
  • Events or incidents that occurred prior to the Trip being booked
  • Voluntary trip shortening not directed by a licensed medical practitioner
No emergency medical insurance exists in this Guide to Benefits. Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is yours. A serious ER visit in Italy or Japan runs $20K to $80K, and a medevac home can exceed $200K.

No emergency medical coverage abroad. Mastercard Global Service provides referrals and card replacement assistance only. All medical costs abroad are the cardholder's responsibility. A single ER visit in Japan or Europe typically runs $10,000 to $80,000.

What's not covered
  • All emergency medical expenses abroad — no coverage under this card
No emergency evacuation. A transoceanic air ambulance from Southeast Asia runs $200,000 to $300,000. This card provides zero coverage for that scenario.

No emergency evacuation or repatriation benefit. Mastercard Global Service provides referrals only and does not arrange or pay for emergency transport. Emergency transportation costs are entirely the cardholder's responsibility. Air evacuation from remote destinations can exceed $200,000.

What's not covered
  • All emergency evacuation and repatriation costs — no coverage under this card

Deductible : No deductible

Entire Common Carrier fare must be charged to Covered Card and/or Bilt Rewards program Notify within 20 days of interruption Submit all documents within 90 days

Covers unused nonrefundable Common Carrier tickets up to $5,000 per Covered Traveler if a trip is interrupted for a covered reason. Coverage begins on the Trip Departure Date and ends on the Trip Completion Date. Hotels, tours, and other prepaid expenses are not reimbursable. Coverage is secondary.

What's covered
  • Unused Common Carrier ticket value (less any refund or credit received)
  • Death or Accidental Bodily Injury of Covered Traveler requiring trip interruption per medical practitioner
  • Death or life-threatening illness of a Family Member requiring cardholder's return
  • Financial insolvency of Common Carrier
What's not covered
  • Pre-existing conditions (60-day lookback)
  • Emotional trauma, mental illness, pregnancy complications
  • Professional sports, racing, uncertified scuba diving
  • Voluntary trip shortening
  • Any reason not listed under covered reasons

Deductible : No deductible

Common Carrier delayed at least 6 hours Covered Card and/or Bilt Rewards program used to purchase entire Common Carrier fare Delay must be due to a covered cause (mechanical breakdown, weather, ATC, emergency at airport, hijacking, strike, overbooking bump, stolen passports or travel documents, flight crew unavailability) Notify within 90 days of loss Submit all receipts ($25 or more) within 120 days

Reimburses expenses incurred during a Common Carrier delay of at least 6 hours, at $200 per Covered Traveler per day for up to 3 days. Maximum $1,800 per Trip for all Covered Travelers combined. Covered expenses include food, lodging, entertainment, pet boarding, airport lounges, and airport spas. Coverage is secondary.

What's covered
  • Food and beverage
  • Temporary lodging
  • Entertainment
  • Pet boarding
  • Virtual office rentals at airport, terminal, or station
  • Airport spas or relaxation room rentals
  • Daily passes to airline lounge clubs
What's not covered
  • Voluntary surrender of a delay voucher from the Common Carrier
  • Delays not caused by a covered reason
  • New flight booking costs (only expenses during the delay, not rebooking fees)

No missed connection coverage. This benefit is not included with this card. If a delayed inbound flight causes a missed connection, rebooking costs and related expenses are not covered. Last-minute rebooking on a missed international connection can cost $300 to $800.

What's not covered
  • All missed connection costs — no coverage under this card

No early return benefit. Additional transportation costs from cutting a trip short are not reimbursed beyond what trip interruption covers for Common Carrier tickets. A last-minute one-way flight home can cost $800 to $2,000.

What's not covered
  • All early return transportation costs beyond Common Carrier ticket reimbursement

No baggage delay reimbursement. Essential purchases during a baggage delay are at the cardholder's expense. A 48-hour delay can require $300 to $500 in essential clothing and toiletries.

What's not covered
  • All baggage delay expenses — no coverage under this card

No lost or stolen baggage coverage. If luggage is permanently lost or stolen in transit, the airline's liability limit applies ($3,800 domestic, approximately $1,900 international). A checked bag with $2,000 in belongings would be unrecovered above that airline cap.

What's not covered
  • All lost or stolen baggage costs beyond airline liability — no additional coverage under this card

No travel accident insurance included in this Guide to Benefits. Accidental death or dismemberment while traveling is not covered. Common carrier accident benefits on premium cards typically range from $250,000 to $1,000,000 — this card provides none under this benefit guide.

What's not covered
  • All travel accident AD&D benefits — not listed in this Guide to Benefits

No hotel theft protection. Personal belongings stolen from your hotel room are not covered by this card. Electronics and valuables left in a hotel room can total $1,000 to $3,000 with no recourse if stolen.

What's not covered
  • All hotel room theft — no coverage under this card

CDW claim paid fast with no fight

Got into a minor accident with a rental car in Florida. Filed the CDW claim through Assurant. Primary coverage meant I didn't have to call my personal insurance at all. Submitted the rental agreement, accident report, and repair estimate. Check came in about three weeks. Process was cleaner than I expected for a credit card claim.

Trip cancellation denied: wrong reason

Had to cancel a flight because of a work conflict that came up last minute. Thought the trip cancellation benefit would cover it. It does not. The covered reasons are basically limited to death, serious illness, or the airline going bankrupt. Job conflicts, work obligations, and anything you decide yourself are not covered. Learned this the hard way after the cancellation.

No medical coverage abroad is a real problem

Traveled to Japan and got food poisoning bad enough to need a clinic visit. Paid $800 out of pocket. When I got home I looked up the Bilt card benefits guide and confirmed: zero emergency medical coverage. I had assumed the World Elite label meant full travel insurance. It does not. This card is great for rent and dining but I will be buying separate travel insurance for any international trip going forward.

FAQ

What people ask about the Bilt Rewards World Elite Mastercard

  • Most Bilt World Elite Mastercard travel benefits activate automatically when you purchase your Common Carrier ticket (flight, train, or cruise) with your Covered Card or Bilt Rewards program. For CDW, you must pay the full rental cost with the card and decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter. Cell phone protection activates automatically as long as your monthly wireless bill is charged to the Bilt card the month before any incident. No pre-registration is needed for travel benefits.
  • Covered Travelers include the primary cardholder, their spouse or Domestic Partner, and Dependent Children (under 19 residing with the cardholder; under 25 enrolled as full-time students; or permanently disabled dependents). For CDW, any authorized driver listed on the rental agreement with a valid driver's license is covered. You are still eligible for trip delay and cancellation coverage on trips even if you are not personally traveling with the covered travelers.
  • So, you're at the counter ready to pick up the keys and the agent pitches rental insurance. Decline it. Charge the full rental to your Bilt World Elite Mastercard and you are covered for collision and theft up to $50,000. Coverage is primary in the US (except New York) and primary internationally: you file directly with Assurant at 1-800-316-8051, no personal auto insurer involved. Rental period must not exceed 31 consecutive days. Exotic vehicles, motorcycles, trucks with open cargo beds, and rentals in Israel, Jamaica, Ireland, and Northern Ireland are excluded.
  • Call Assurant at 1-800-316-8051 or go to mycardbenefits.assurant.com. Notification deadlines are strict: 20 days for trip cancellation or interruption, 60 days for CDW and purchase security, 90 days for trip delay. For trip delay, keep every itemized receipt of $25 or more. For CDW, keep the rental agreement, accident report, and repair estimate. All documents must be submitted within 90 to 365 days depending on the benefit. Claims are finalized within 15 business days of receiving complete documentation.
  • Several important gaps: no emergency medical coverage abroad (every hospital bill is yours), no emergency evacuation (a medevac runs $200,000 and this card provides none), no baggage delay or lost luggage reimbursement, no extended warranty, no return protection, and no missed connection coverage. Trip cancellation covers Common Carrier tickets only, not hotels or tours, and applies to only three covered reasons. If you travel internationally, a separate travel medical insurance policy is essential to fill the medical gap.
  • No. Trip cancellation covers only three specific reasons: serious illness or Accidental Bodily Injury of the cardholder or a Family Member (verified by a licensed medical practitioner), death of the cardholder or a Family Member, or financial insolvency of the Common Carrier. Job loss, weather delays, personal conflicts, and most other common cancellation reasons are not covered. The benefit also covers only Common Carrier costs (flights, trains, cruises) up to $5,000 per traveler, not hotels or prepaid tours.
  • Yes. The Bilt World Elite Mastercard includes cell phone protection up to $800 per claim, with a $25 deductible, up to two claims per 12-month period ($1,600 annual cap). Your monthly wireless bill must be charged to the Bilt card the month prior to the incident. Coverage applies to damage that impairs functionality and theft. Cracked screens that do not affect the phone's operation are not covered. Tablets and smartwatches are also excluded.
  • No. There is no emergency medical coverage in the Bilt World Elite Mastercard Guide to Benefits. Mastercard Global Service provides 24/7 assistance for card replacement and referrals, but it does not pay for medical treatment. Every hospital bill abroad is entirely the cardholder's responsibility. A single ER visit in Japan or Europe typically costs $10,000 to $80,000. If you travel internationally, a standalone travel medical insurance policy is necessary to cover this gap.
  • For rental cars and trip delays, yes. For everything else, there are significant gaps. The card has no emergency medical coverage, no emergency evacuation, no lost luggage benefit, and no baggage delay reimbursement. Trip cancellation covers only Common Carrier costs for three narrow reasons. If you travel internationally without a separate travel medical insurance policy, a serious illness or accident abroad could result in tens of thousands of dollars in unrecovered costs.
