Our opinion on Chase United Quest Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Solid cancel within scope. No medical abroad. Here's what that gap actually costs on a United Quest trip. The trip cancellation covers up to $1,500 per person, but only for Common Carrier costs. Hotels, tours, and every non-airline prepaid charge are excluded, even for a covered reason like illness or severe weather. Most cardholders assume trip cancellation reimburses the full trip. The benefit terms reimburse only non-refundable fares charged to a Common Carrier. A $3,000 hotel deposit and an $800 pre-booked tour are out of pocket. Zero emergency medical coverage exists on this card. Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is yours. A serious ER visit in Europe or Japan typically runs $10,000 to $60,000. Standalone travel insurance starts at $100,000 per person for emergency medical on international trips. The gap between that and the United Quest card benefits: $100,000. If your travel is primarily United flights with minimal prepaid hotel costs, the trip cancellation works within its scope. If you're traveling internationally without separate health coverage, the medical gap warrants a dedicated policy.

What works on travel
  • $1,500 per person trip cancellation: illness, severe weather, military orders, 8 covered reasons, zero deductible
  • $500 per person trip delay: meals and lodging covered after 12 hours or with overnight stay
  • $300 baggage delay: $100 per day after 6 hours, essentials including clothing and phone chargers
  • $3,000 lost luggage per person: covers both checked bags and carry-ons
  • $500,000 travel accident on a Common Carrier, plus $100,000 for 24-hour coverage up to 30 days
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical coverage abroad: every dollar of any hospital bill is yours, a serious ER runs $10,000 to $60,000
  • No emergency evacuation: Travel and Emergency Assistance provides referrals only, all transport costs are the cardholder's responsibility
  • Trip cancel is Common Carrier only: prepaid hotels, tours, and non-airline expenses are excluded even for a covered reason
  • 12-hour trip delay trigger: a 10-to-11-hour delay does not qualify unless it requires an overnight stay

What does Chase United Quest Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

Coverage reimburses only Common Carrier costs: flights, trains, cruises. A trip with $3,000 in prepaid hotel deposits and $1,500 in airfare recovers only the $1,500 in airfare if cancelled.

Deductible : No deductible

A portion or the entire cost of the Common Carrier fare must be charged to the card or paid with redeemable Rewards Trip must not exceed 60 consecutive days Notify the benefit administrator within 20 days via chasecardbenefits.com or 1-800-350-2919 Submit all required documents within 90 days

Covers non-refundable Common Carrier fares up to $1,500 per person and $6,000 per trip if a trip is cancelled or interrupted due to a covered reason. Coverage applies to flights, trains, cruises, and other Common Carrier costs charged to the card. Hotels, tour operators, Airbnb, and other non-Common Carrier prepaid expenses are excluded. Pre-existing conditions within 60 days of the initial booking date are not covered.

No emergency medical insurance exists in this Guide to Benefits. Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is yours. A serious ER visit in Italy or Japan runs $20,000 to $80,000.

Travel and Emergency Assistance is a referral service only, not insurance. The Guide to Benefits states: the Covered Traveler is responsible for the cost of any actual medical, legal, transportation, cash advance, or other services or goods provided.

No emergency evacuation or repatriation insurance. Travel and Emergency Assistance arranges logistics but all transportation costs are the cardholder's responsibility. A transoceanic air ambulance from Southeast Asia runs $200,000 to $300,000.

How to file a United Quest card claim

1

Step 1: Report within 20 days

Visit chasecardbenefits.com or call 1-800-350-2919 as soon as the incident occurs, no later than 20 days after. If outside the US, call collect at 001-214-503-2953. Do not wait, late reporting can reduce or void your claim. For trip delay, the deadline to file is 60 days.

2

Step 2: Gather documentation

Depending on the benefit, collect: travel itinerary, Covered Card Account statement showing the Common Carrier fare, written confirmation from the carrier stating the covered reason, itemized receipts for all claimed expenses, police or carrier report if applicable, and any settlement or denial from the Common Carrier.

3

Step 3: Submit all documents within 90 days

Submit the complete documentation package to chasecardbenefits.com within 90 days of the incident (100 days for trip delay). Once all required documents are received, expect a response within approximately 7 business days. If denied, request the specific denial reason in writing and appeal with point-by-point documentation.

FAQ

What people ask about the Chase United Quest

  • Most United Quest card travel benefits activate automatically when you charge a portion or the entire Common Carrier fare to your card or use redeemable Rewards for the booking. No pre-registration is required. For rental car CDW, you must also decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter. Coverage begins on your Trip Departure Date and ends on your Trip Completion Date. If you pay with points or miles for a United flight and charge nothing to the card, you may still be covered, but keep documentation showing the Rewards transaction was associated with your Covered Card Account.
  • Coverage extends to the primary cardholder and Family Members, defined as spouse or domestic partner, dependent children (including adopted and stepchildren), parents and stepparents, brothers and sisters, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and their spouses or domestic partners. Covered Travelers do not need to be traveling with the cardholder to be covered. For rental car CDW, only the primary renter and any additional drivers listed on the rental agreement are covered.
  • The United Quest card rental car coverage is primary, both inside and outside the United States. Primary means you file directly with the benefit administrator at chasecardbenefits.com without involving your personal auto insurance first. New York State residents with existing personal automobile insurance receive excess (secondary) coverage instead. To activate primary CDW, charge the full rental to your United Quest card and decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter. Coverage applies to standard vehicles with an MSRP of $125,000 or less, for rentals up to 31 consecutive days.
  • Visit chasecardbenefits.com or call 1-800-350-2919 (collect at 001-214-503-2953 from outside the US) within 20 days of the incident, 60 days for trip delay. The benefit administrator is Virginia Surety Company, Inc., an Assurant company. You will need your travel itinerary, card statement showing the Common Carrier charge, written confirmation from the carrier, itemized receipts, and any carrier settlement or denial letter. Submit all documents within 90 days. Expect a determination within approximately 7 business days once the complete package is received.
  • The United Quest card does not cover emergency medical expenses abroad, emergency evacuation, or repatriation. Travel and Emergency Assistance provides referrals only, with all costs the cardholder's responsibility. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage applies only to Common Carrier costs (flights, trains, cruises), not to prepaid hotels, tours, or Airbnb bookings. Trip delay requires a 12-hour delay or overnight stay and only 4 specific covered reasons qualify. There is no cell phone protection, no return protection, no price protection, and no hotel theft protection on this card.
  • Yes, if you travel internationally. The United Quest card has no emergency medical coverage abroad. Travel and Emergency Assistance can refer you to local doctors and hospitals, but every dollar of any medical bill is your responsibility. A single ER visit in Japan, Europe, or Southeast Asia typically runs $10,000 to $80,000. Emergency medical evacuation from a remote destination can exceed $200,000. Standalone travel insurance policies start at $100,000 per person for emergency medical on international trips.
  • No. The United Quest card does not include cell phone protection. Theft or accidental screen damage to your phone is not covered under any benefit in the Guide to Benefits. Replacing a flagship smartphone out-of-pocket runs $800 to $1,300, and screen repair typically costs $300 to $500. If cell phone protection is important to you, consider a standalone policy or a card that includes this benefit.
  • No. Pre-existing conditions are excluded from the United Quest card's trip cancellation and interruption benefit. The benefit terms define a pre-existing condition as any illness, disease, or injury for which medical advice, diagnosis, care, or treatment was recommended or received within the 60-day period immediately before your initial deposit or booking date. This 60-day lookback is the Chase standard across all personal card benefits.
  • The United Quest card covers trip cancellation due to illness, accidental bodily injury, or death of you, your traveling companion, or a family member. It also covers severe weather, named storm warnings, change in military orders, organized strikes affecting public transportation, and terrorist incidents or travel warnings. Coverage is limited to non-refundable Common Carrier costs. The maximum reimbursement is $1,500 per person and $6,000 per trip. Pre-existing conditions within a 60-day lookback are excluded.
  • Yes, up to $500 per Covered Traveler per trip, when a Common Carrier delay exceeds 12 hours or requires an overnight stay. Covered expenses include meals, lodging, toiletries, and medication. The covered delay reasons are limited to four: equipment failure, inclement weather, organized strike, and hijacking. A delay caused by a crew scheduling issue, staffing shortage, or ATC ground stop does not qualify. File within 60 days at chasecardbenefits.com and keep all receipts plus a written statement from the airline confirming the covered reason.
