Our take on travel insurance for the HSBC World Elite Mastercard

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

The HSBC World Elite Mastercard carried one of the more complete travel-insurance packages on a Canadian Mastercard before it was discontinued: $2,000,000 emergency medical, trip cancellation and interruption, flight delay, baggage delay and loss, hotel burglary and a high $750,000 common-carrier travel-accident benefit. Its main weaknesses were the tight 21-day medical window for travellers 65 and over and relatively modest cancellation ($2,000) and baggage-delay ($200) caps. With HSBC's exit from Canada, the card and this coverage are no longer available.

What works on travel
  • Emergency medical up to $2,000,000 per person
  • Trip cancellation and interruption plus flight-delay and baggage coverage
  • High $750,000 common-carrier travel-accident benefit
  • Hotel/motel burglary and baggage-loss protection included
Where travel breaks down
  • Discontinued — no longer obtainable
  • Medical limited to the first 21 days of a trip at age 65+
  • Modest cancellation ($2,000/person) and baggage-delay ($200) limits
  • No standalone missed-connection benefit

How to make a claim

1

Contact Assurant before acting

For a medical emergency, call Assurant at 1-800-668-8680 (or 416-977-6066 collect) BEFORE seeking treatment — benefits could be limited or denied otherwise. For other claims, notify Assurant or open a claim at cardbenefits.assurant.com.

2

Notify within the deadline

Report trip-cancellation and most claims promptly — Trip Cancellation required notice within 48 hours of the covered event. Mobile Device claims had to be reported within 30 days of the loss.

3

Gather your documents

Assemble the card account statement showing the charge, original receipts/invoices, police or carrier reports where applicable, repair estimates, and proof of the scheduled trip dates for medical claims.

4

Submit and follow the Administrator's instructions

File online at cardbenefits.assurant.com or by phone, then follow the Administrator's directions before repairing or replacing any item. Reimbursement is issued once the required proof is received.

FAQ

What people ask about the HSBC World Elite Mastercard

  • No. HSBC Bank Canada was acquired by RBC and the transaction closed on March 28, 2024. HSBC credit cards are no longer issued in Canada and the World Elite Mastercard can no longer be applied for. Existing World Elite holders were migrated to the RBC Avion Visa Infinite (some to the Avion Visa Infinite Privilege). The coverage described here is historical and is kept for reference. For current options, compare cards or use a travel-insurance quote tool.
  • The benefits were underwritten by American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida and American Bankers Life Assurance Company of Florida (collectively "Assurant") under Master Policies HSBC0617 and HSBCL0617, issued to HSBC Bank Canada. Claims were administered by Assurant at 1-800-668-8680 (Canada/US) or 416-977-6066 collect from elsewhere, and online at cardbenefits.assurant.com.
  • Emergency Travel Medical was limited to $2,000,000 per insured person. Critically, it covered only the first 31 consecutive days of a trip for cardholders under 65, and only the first 21 consecutive days for cardholders aged 65 or older — a tighter senior limit than many competitors. All insured persons had to be Canadian residents covered by a provincial/territorial government health plan (GHIP), and pre-existing condition stability rules applied.
  • Trip Cancellation paid up to $2,000 per insured person and $5,000 per trip for covered causes before departure (the Administrator had to be notified within 48 hours). Trip Interruption/Delay paid up to the same limits ($2,000 per person / $5,000 per trip) after departure. Flight Delay reimbursed up to $250 per day when a flight was delayed 6 hours or more.
  • Yes. Car Rental Collision/Loss Damage was provided on a primary basis for most passenger vehicles with an MSRP up to $65,000, rented for 31 consecutive days or fewer, provided you charged the rental to the card and declined the rental agency's collision damage waiver. It also included Personal Effects coverage (up to $1,000 per person, $2,000 per account) and Car Rental Accidental Death & Dismemberment up to $300,000 per account. Third-party liability and roadside assistance were not included.
  • Yes. Baggage Delay reimbursed essential items up to $200 per trip when checked baggage was delayed more than 6 hours. Baggage Loss covered actual cash value up to $1,000 per insured person, with a $500-per-item limit; cellular phones, computers, money, documents and business property were excluded.
  • Purchase Assurance protected most new purchases against loss, theft or damage for 90 days, and Extended Warranty doubled the manufacturer's warranty (on warranties of 5 years or less) — both sharing a $60,000 lifetime maximum per account. Mobile Device Insurance reimbursed up to $1,000 (depreciated value, less a $25–$100 deductible based on the device cost) for a phone or tablet charged to the card, beginning 30 days after purchase.
  • If you were migrated to an RBC product, your current coverage is governed by RBC's certificate, not this one. For historical claims tied to an event that occurred while the HSBC coverage was in force, contact Assurant at 1-800-668-8680 or cardbenefits.assurant.com. Always rely on the wording of the certificate in force at the time of your trip or purchase.
