Our take on travel insurance for the American Express Gold

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

The Amex Gold carries the same thin Chubb cover as American Express's KrisFlyer card. It pays a travel accident lump sum of up to S$350,000 if an accident on a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus causes death or permanent disablement, plus small cash benefits for a missed connection and delayed baggage. There is no overseas medical cover, no emergency evacuation, no trip cancellation and no baggage-loss cover, and this Gold Card version does not even include a flight-delay benefit. So an overseas hospital bill after you fall ill is entirely on you, and MediShield Life, Singapore's national health scheme, does not follow you outside the country. The amex gold travel insurance switches on automatically once the entire fare for the trip is charged to the card, with no opt-in form. Treat it as a small top-up on the flight itself, not as travel insurance: a standalone Singapore policy starts at around S$20 a trip and pays the medical, cancellation and baggage claims this card leaves out.

What works on travel
  • S$350,000 travel accident lump sum for death or permanent disablement on a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus
  • Up to S$700 per person of baggage-delay cash, S$200 after 6 hours plus S$500 more if the bag is still missing after 48 hours
  • Up to S$200 per person, capped at S$400 per family, for a missed connection delayed beyond 4 hours
  • Cover switches on automatically once the trip fare is charged, and includes spouse and dependent children up to 23
Where travel breaks down
  • No overseas medical cover: a hospital admission abroad is paid entirely out of your own pocket
  • No emergency evacuation: an air ambulance home from the region can run S$50,000 to S$120,000, none of it covered
  • No trip cancellation and no baggage-loss cover: prepaid bookings and lost bags are not reimbursed
  • No flight-delay benefit at all, unlike some other cards, so a long wait pays nothing unless you also miss a connection

What does American Express Gold Travel Insurance actually cover?

The S$350,000 headline is the accident sum on a public conveyance, not a medical limit. There is no cover for an ordinary accident away from the flight, ferry, train or bus.

Deductible : No deductible

Travel Accident is the card's main benefit. It pays a lump sum, not medical bills, if an accident while you are riding a scheduled public conveyance (a flight, ferry, train or bus you paid to board) causes death, total disablement or permanent loss. The sum is up to S$350,000 for death, total disablement or the loss of two limbs or sight in both eyes, and up to S$175,000 for the loss of one limb or sight in one eye. Cover extends to the cardmember, spouse and dependent children up to 23. It is not an overseas medical limit, and it only pays for an accident on the public conveyance itself.

Recommended : $1,000,000

What's covered
  • Accidental death, total disablement or permanent loss on a scheduled public conveyance overseas
  • Up to S$350,000 for death or the loss of two limbs or sight in both eyes
  • Up to S$175,000 for the loss of one limb or sight in one eye
What's not covered
  • War and act of war, self-destruction, and illegal acts
  • Injury while serving as operator or crew of any conveyance
  • Injury while in or boarding a rental vehicle, and hazardous material exposure

No overseas emergency medical cover. This benefit is not included with this card. All medical costs overseas are the cardholder's responsibility. MediShield Life does not cover you outside Singapore, and a serious hospital admission in the US or Europe can run S$100,000 or more.

What's not covered
  • Overseas medical treatment is not a benefit of this card
  • Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy excluded

No emergency evacuation cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Emergency evacuation costs are entirely the cardholder's responsibility. An air ambulance from Bali or Bangkok back to Singapore runs S$50,000 to S$120,000.

What's not covered
  • Emergency medical evacuation is not a benefit of this card

No overseas emergency dental cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Emergency dental treatment overseas is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • Overseas emergency dental is not a benefit of this card

No hospital cash allowance. This benefit is not included with this card. There is no daily cash payment while you are hospitalised overseas.

What's not covered
  • Overseas hospital daily cash is not a benefit of this card

No trip cancellation. This benefit is not included with this card. Prepaid flights, hotels, and tours are not reimbursable if you cancel. A standalone travel insurance policy is required for this coverage.

What's not covered
  • Trip cancellation is not a benefit of this card

No trip curtailment cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost to fly home early after a family emergency and resume a trip is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • Trip curtailment is not a benefit of this card

No travel disruption cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Extra accommodation and transport from a trip disruption are the cardholder's responsibility.

What's not covered
  • Travel disruption is not a benefit of this card

No flight-delay cover. Unlike the KrisFlyer card, the Amex Gold policy has no flight-delay benefit at all. If your flight is delayed on the tarmac, meals and accommodation during the wait are the cardholder's responsibility. The only travel-inconvenience cash on this card is for a missed connection or delayed baggage.

What's not covered
  • Flight or travel delay is not a benefit of this card
The S$200 cap makes this a token benefit, not a re-routing fund.

Deductible : No deductible

Missed connection pays if your onward connecting scheduled flight is missed because your incoming flight arrived late, and no alternative onward transport is provided within 4 hours. It reimburses hotel accommodation and restaurant meals up to S$200 per person, capped at S$400 for the family, and only for costs charged to the card. The amount is small and meant for the wait, not for buying a fresh ticket. It does not apply if the transfer point is in Singapore, your country of residence.

What's covered
  • Hotel accommodation and meals after a missed connection
  • Up to S$200 per person, maximum S$400 per family
What's not covered
  • Missed connection where the transfer point is in Singapore
  • Costs not charged to the card

No baggage cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Replacement costs for lost or stolen bags are the cardholder's responsibility.

What's not covered
  • Baggage loss is not a benefit of this card
This pays for delay and emergency purchases only. The cash value of a lost or stolen bag is not covered.

Deductible : No deductible

This covers baggage delay, not baggage loss. If your checked bag is not delivered within 6 hours of your arrival, the card reimburses up to S$200 per person for essential clothing and requisites you buy while you wait. If the bag is still missing after 48 hours it is assumed permanently lost, and the card adds up to a further S$500 per person for emergency purchases within 4 days, up to S$1,000 per family in total. You must keep receipts and obtain a Property Irregularity Report, the airline's official record of missing baggage. It does not pay if the delay happens in Singapore, your country of residence.

Recommended : $3,000

What's covered
  • Up to S$200 per person for essentials after a 6-hour baggage delay
  • Up to a further S$500 per person if the bag is still missing after 48 hours
  • Up to S$1,000 per family in total
What's not covered
  • Baggage delay in Singapore, your country of residence
  • Items not immediately necessary
  • Confiscation by customs, and failure to file a Property Irregularity Report

No travel documents cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost to replace a lost passport or reclaim fraudulent card use overseas is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • Loss of travel documents is not a benefit of this card

No personal liability cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Legal liability for injury to others or property damage overseas is uninsured, and claims commonly reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.

What's not covered
  • Personal liability overseas is not a benefit of this card

Enough unless you travel a lot, but it is a charge card

Personally have both the Gold Card and Platinum Card, I'd say the Platinum Card is just a luxury upgrade from the Gold Card, unless you travel often, Gold Card is sufficient. The points system is shared for both Gold and Platinum, so spending on either cards allows you to earn points. But do take note it's a CHARGE card, not a credit card. Expect full payment for usage of the card monthly such that you will not be categorised as a defaulter, and incur heavy interest thus affecting your credit score.

Strong rewards, dining and travel benefits

The American Express Gold Card is a top-tier credit card that lives up to its reputation as a premium offering. The generous rewards program, dining perks, and travel benefits make it an excellent choice for frequent travelers and food enthusiasts. I highly recommend the Amex Gold Card to anyone looking for a rewarding and all-around exceptional credit card experience.

Okay card, would not particularly recommend

Overall a okay card, many other cards that provide attractive rewards out in the market, wouldn’t particularly recommend.

How to make an Amex Gold travel insurance claim

1

Step 1: Notify Chubb Insurance Singapore as soon as possible

Start your claim with Chubb Insurance Singapore within the notice period in the certificate, commonly 30 days of the incident. Only expenses charged to the Amex Gold can be reimbursed where the benefit requires the fare to be charged to the card.

2

Step 2: Gather the proof Chubb Insurance Singapore needs

Keep the card statement showing the fare was charged, your boarding passes, and for a medical claim the doctor's report and receipts. For delayed or lost baggage, get a Property Irregularity Report from the airline before leaving the airport; for theft, file a police report within 24 hours.

3

Step 3: Escalate to FIDReC if a fair claim is denied

If Chubb Insurance Singapore rejects a claim you believe is valid, escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, within 6 months of the insurer's final reply. FIDReC independently mediates disputes between consumers and financial institutions in Singapore.

FAQ

What people ask about the American Express Gold

  • There is no form to fill in. The Chubb cover on the Amex Gold switches on automatically for a trip, as long as the entire fare for the originating and return journey is charged to the card. Holding the card is not enough by itself: it is the fare that triggers cover. If you book flights on miles and only the airport taxes hit the card, that may not meet the condition, so check before you rely on it. You can also tell American Express at any time if you do not want the benefit, in which case you are not covered. Keep the card statement that shows the fare was charged, because you will need it to claim.
  • The policy covers the principal cardmember, their spouse and dependent children up to 23, provided the trip's fare was charged to the card. The cardmember and spouse must be between 18 and 80 at the start of each period of insurance. For the travel accident benefit, the covered persons share the same S$350,000 scale for death or major loss, and S$175,000 for the loss of one limb or the sight of one eye. Because this is an accident-led policy, do not assume a spouse or child has any overseas medical cover, as there is none for anyone. Check the eligibility and covered-persons wording in the certificate before you count on family cover.
  • No. The Amex Gold travel insurance has no overseas medical cover of any kind. If you fall ill or are injured abroad and need a doctor or a hospital, the full bill is on you, and MediShield Life, Singapore's national health scheme, does not pay for treatment outside Singapore. There is also no emergency evacuation benefit, so an air ambulance home, which can run past S$100,000, is not covered either. The card's benefits are limited to a travel accident lump sum and small cash payments for a missed connection and delayed baggage. For medical protection abroad you need a standalone travel insurance policy, which starts at around S$20 for a single trip.
  • No. Because the card has no overseas medical cover at all, it does not pay for COVID-19 treatment, quarantine or a COVID-related trip cancellation. If you catch COVID-19 abroad and need a hospital, the cost is entirely yours. The only benefits on the card are the travel accident lump sum and small cash payments for a missed connection and delayed baggage, none of which respond to an illness. This is card-specific: some other complimentary card policies do include limited COVID-19 medical or evacuation cover, so never assume it carries from one card to another. For COVID-19 medical and cancellation protection, buy a standalone policy that states it covers the virus.
  • The Amex Gold provides travel accident cover of up to S$350,000. Personal accident cover is a lump sum paid for accidental death or permanent disablement, not a medical limit. The full S$350,000 applies to death, total disablement or the loss of two limbs or sight in both eyes, while S$175,000 applies to the loss of one limb or sight in one eye. The benefit only pays for an accident while you are travelling on a scheduled public conveyance, also called a common carrier, meaning a flight, ferry, train or bus you paid to board. It does not cover an ordinary accident on the ground or any overseas hospital bill.
  • Claims go to Chubb Insurance Singapore, the underwriter. Submit your claim online at Chubb's Singapore claims centre or call +65 6299 0988, as soon as practicable and within 30 days of the incident. Keep the card statement showing the fare was charged, your boarding passes, and the airline's written confirmation of any missed connection. For delayed baggage, get a Property Irregularity Report, the airline's official record of missing baggage, before you leave the airport. Only expenses charged to the card can be reimbursed. If Chubb denies a claim you believe is fair, you can escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, an independent body that mediates disputes between consumers and financial institutions in Singapore.
  • A lot. There is no overseas medical cover, no emergency evacuation, no trip cancellation, no trip curtailment and no baggage-loss cover on the Amex Gold. This Gold Card version also has no flight-delay benefit, so the only travel-inconvenience cash is for a missed connection and delayed baggage, and neither pays if it happens in Singapore. General exclusions include war and act of war, self-destruction and illegal acts, injury while serving as operator or crew of a conveyance, injury while in or boarding a rental vehicle, and exposure to hazardous material. There is also no personal liability cover and no rental-vehicle excess benefit, since no Singapore card offers one.
  • Each trip is covered for up to 180 consecutive days. Cover ends at 12.01am Singapore time on the 181st day of a single trip, so a longer posting leaves you uninsured for the extra days. There is also a cumulative cap: once your trips add up to more than 240 days in the specified period, you are not covered beyond the 241st day. If you travel often or plan a long trip, check the day count, because the accident and inconvenience benefits simply switch off once the limit is passed, with no option to extend.
  • Almost certainly, yes. The Amex Gold cover is an accident-led add-on, not full travel insurance. It pays a lump sum for a serious accident on a flight, ferry, train or bus, plus small cash benefits for a missed connection and delayed baggage, but nothing for overseas medical treatment, evacuation, trip cancellation or lost bags, and it has no flight-delay benefit either. A single hospital admission abroad, which MediShield Life does not cover outside Singapore, can run past S$100,000. A standalone Singapore travel policy fills those gaps from around S$20 for a single trip and usually covers COVID-19 medical and cancellation too. Treat the card benefit as a small top-up on the flight, not a replacement for real cover.
  • No. The Amex Gold does not include mobile phone insurance. It does carry purchase protection, but that benefit specifically excludes mobile phones damaged or lost while used at work, so it is not a phone-cover substitute. If your phone is stolen abroad or the screen cracks, the repair or replacement is generally on you, and a flagship handset costs S$1,200 to S$2,300 to replace. For dependable device cover you would need a separate gadget or mobile insurance policy, or a card that specifically offers phone protection.
