Travel Accident is the Ascend's main benefit. Personal accident cover pays a lump sum, not medical bills, if an accident while you are riding a scheduled public conveyance (a flight, ferry, train or bus you paid to board, what the policy calls a common carrier) causes death, total disablement or permanent loss within 365 days. The sum is up to S$1,000,000 for death, total disablement or the loss of two limbs or sight in both eyes, and up to S$500,000 for the loss of one limb or sight in one eye. Cover extends to the cardmember, spouse and dependent children up to 23, with a lower scale of up to S$100,000 for a child under 16. It is not an overseas medical limit, and it only pays for an accident on the public conveyance itself.

Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the American Express KrisFlyer Ascend
Charge your full travel fare to the Amex KrisFlyer Ascend and a complimentary Chubb policy switches on by itself, but read the fine print before you count on it. The cover pairs a large travel accident lump sum, up to S$1,000,000 if an accident on a scheduled flight, ferry or train causes death or permanent disablement, with only small cash benefits for flight delay, a missed connection and delayed baggage. There is no overseas medical cover, no emergency evacuation, no trip cancellation and no baggage-loss cover at all. So an overseas hospital bill after you fall ill, which MediShield Life (Singapore's national health scheme) does not pay abroad, or a trip you have to cancel, is entirely on you. Activation is automatic with no opt-in form, as long as the travel cost for the originating and return journey was charged to the card. The S$1,000,000 figure is a genuine accident payout, but treat it as a top-up on the flight itself, not as travel insurance: a standalone Singapore policy starts at around S$20 a trip and pays the medical, cancellation and baggage claims this card leaves out.
- S$1,000,000 travel accident lump sum for death or permanent disablement on a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus
- Baggage delay pays up to S$200 per person for essentials, plus up to S$500 more if the bag is still missing after 48 hours
- Flight delay and missed connection each pay up to S$200 per person, up to S$400 per family
- Cover switches on automatically with no opt-in form once the full fare is charged, and includes spouse and children up to 23
- No overseas medical cover: a hospital admission abroad is paid entirely out of your own pocket
- No emergency evacuation: an air ambulance home from the region can run S$50,000 to S$120,000, none of it covered
- No trip cancellation: prepaid flights, hotels and tours are not refundable through this card
- No baggage-loss cover: only short baggage delays are paid, so a lost or stolen bag is on you
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

- Overseas medical treatment is not a benefit of this card
- Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy excluded
No emergency evacuation cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Emergency evacuation costs are entirely the cardholder's responsibility. An air ambulance from Bali or Bangkok back to Singapore runs S$50,000 to S$120,000.
- Emergency medical evacuation is not a benefit of this card
No overseas emergency dental cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Emergency dental treatment overseas is out of pocket.

- Overseas hospital daily cash is not a benefit of this card

- Trip cancellation is not a benefit of this card
No trip curtailment cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost to fly home early after a family emergency and resume a trip is out of pocket.
- Trip curtailment is not a benefit of this card

- Travel disruption is not a benefit of this card
Flight delay pays a small cash benefit for refreshment and accommodation if your flight is delayed and no alternative flight is made available within 4 hours of the original departure. It pays up to S$200 per person, capped at S$400 per family, and only for costs charged to the card. The cap is low, enough for a meal and perhaps a night, not for a full re-routing, which is why the benefit reads better than it pays. It does not apply to a delay the airline resolves within 4 hours.
Recommended : SGD 1,000
- Cash for refreshment and accommodation during a qualifying flight delay
- Up to S$200 per person, maximum S$400 per family
- Delays where the airline offers alternative travel you refuse
- Private charter flights where you are the only passengers
Missed connection pays if you miss a connecting flight and no alternative flight is made available within 4 hours, covering additional travel, refreshment and accommodation before your actual departure. It pays up to S$200 per person, capped at S$400 per family, and only for costs charged to the card. Like the delay benefit, the amount is small and meant for the wait, not for buying a fresh ticket. Keep the receipts and the airline's written confirmation of the missed connection.
- Additional travel, refreshment and accommodation after a missed connection
- Up to S$200 per person, maximum S$400 per family
- Costs the airline already meets with alternative travel you accept
- Private charter flights where you are the only passengers
No baggage cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Replacement costs for lost or stolen bags are the cardholder's responsibility.
- Baggage loss is not a benefit of this card
This covers baggage delay, not baggage loss. If your checked bag has not arrived within 6 hours of your arrival, the card reimburses up to S$200 per person for essential items you buy while you wait. If the bag is still missing after 48 hours, it adds up to a further S$500 per person, for up to S$1,000 per family in total. You must keep receipts and get a Property Irregularity Report, the airline's official record of missing baggage. It is not payable on the final leg of your return flight to Singapore, so a bag delayed on the way home pays nothing.
Recommended : SGD 3,000
- Up to S$200 per person for essentials after a 6-hour baggage delay
- Up to a further S$500 per person if the bag is still missing after 48 hours
- Up to S$1,000 per family in total
- Baggage delay on the final leg of the return flight to Singapore
- Items not immediately necessary for the trip
- Baggage loss or theft, which is not covered at all
No travel documents cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost to replace a lost passport or reclaim fraudulent card use overseas is out of pocket.
- Loss of travel documents is not a benefit of this card
No personal liability cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Legal liability for injury to others or property damage overseas is uninsured, and claims commonly reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.
- Personal liability overseas is not a benefit of this card

What cardholders say about the American Express KrisFlyer Ascend
Cardholder experience with the card 4 reviews

Great sign-up bonus, note the insurance condition
One of the best sign up bonus you can get for a miles card. Also, if you dine out quite a bit, AMEX networks of restaurants and hotels are a really big bonus. Definitely can't get a fee waiver for this, not even on the first year. AMEX customer service is the best, needless to say. After the bonus ends, the earn rate is average though. The complimentary insurance only applies if you book Singapore Airlines, so do take note if you plan to "offset" your annual travel insurance with the card's annual fee.

Top-tier customer service and direct miles crediting
Reason for 5 star, 1. The customer service is simply awesome. Never once they fail me, not about fee waiver but everything about it. Tip TOP customer service 2. They listen to you, understanding the current covid-19 situation and the competitive cards out there who don't mandate annual fee as long as we are actively using. 3. Perks aren't that bad. Considering no need to convert. Yes as a miles person we can go mix and match different card to get high mpd but after all we still need one card for all other purpose right ? In summary, I don't work for AMEX neither I invested in the company. However, important this product is at market standard and they credit your miles directly without charges. Even if your transaction is a dollar , u still earn miles. Where other cards out there who only give u points for every $5 and 0 points for less $5

Customer service keeps me loyal
AMEX is a good example that price/benefits isn't everything. They are definitely not the cheapest for merchants. And their benefits are also not the top (but not too bad also). However, with their customer service - they have managed to win many loyal customers, as shown from the other reviews below. This has been my main spending card for several years already. If this changes, it will most likely be for another AMEX card.

You pay for perks you cannot always use
[Annual Fee] The annual fee covers perks like 4x lounge access and 1N Hilton stay. However, you're, in a way, paying for these. I only managed to use the lounge access, not the Hilton stay, since the hotel rate is always unavailable, even on weekdays! Thus, for a $315 annual fee, I practically paid for the lounge access only. The only saving grace is the customer service - they're an absolute gem! [Fee Waiver] Requested and approved but no perks like the lounge access [Customer Service] Five (or more) stars!

How to make an Amex KrisFlyer Ascend travel insurance claim
Step 1: Submit your claim to Chubb within 30 days
Make your claim online at Chubb's Singapore claims centre (chubbclaims.com/amex/sg-en) or call +65 6299 0922. Notify Chubb as soon as practicable and in any event within 30 days of the incident. Only expenses charged to the Amex KrisFlyer Ascend can be reimbursed.
Step 2: Gather the proof Chubb needs
Keep the card statement showing the originating and return fare was charged, your boarding passes, and the airline's written confirmation of any delay or missed connection. For delayed baggage, obtain a Property Irregularity Report from the airline before you leave the airport.
Step 3: Escalate to FIDReC if a fair claim is denied
If Chubb rejects a claim you believe is valid, you can escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, within 6 months of Chubb's final reply. FIDReC is an independent body that mediates disputes between consumers and financial institutions in Singapore.
What people ask about the American Express KrisFlyer Ascend
- There is no form to fill in. The Chubb cover on the Amex KrisFlyer Ascend switches on automatically for a trip, as long as the full travel cost for the originating and return journey is charged to the card. Holding the card is not enough by itself: it is the fare for the outbound and return journey that triggers cover. If you book flights on miles and only the airport taxes hit the card, that may not meet the condition, so check before you rely on it. You can also tell American Express at any time if you do not want the benefit, in which case you are not covered. Keep the card statement that shows the fare was charged, because you will need it to claim.
- The policy covers the principal cardmember, their spouse and dependent children up to 23, provided they are Singaporean residents and travelling on a trip whose originating and return fare was charged to the card. The cardmember and spouse must be between 18 and 80. For the travel accident benefit, an adult and a child aged 16 or over share the same S$1,000,000 scale, while a child under 16 has a lower S$100,000 scale. Because this is an accident-led policy, do not assume a spouse or child has any overseas medical cover, as there is none for anyone. Check the eligibility and covered-persons wording in the certificate before you count on family cover.
- No. The Amex KrisFlyer Ascend travel insurance has no overseas medical cover of any kind. If you fall ill or are injured abroad and need a doctor or a hospital, the full bill is on you, and MediShield Life does not pay for treatment outside Singapore. There is also no emergency evacuation benefit, so an air ambulance home, which can run past S$100,000, is not covered either. The card's benefits are limited to a travel accident lump sum and small cash payments for flight delay, missed connection and delayed baggage. For medical protection abroad you need a standalone travel insurance policy, which starts at around S$20 for a single trip.
- No. Because the card has no overseas medical cover at all, it does not pay for COVID-19 treatment, quarantine or a COVID-related trip cancellation. If you catch COVID-19 abroad and need a hospital, the cost is entirely yours. The only benefits on the card are the travel accident lump sum and small cash payments for flight delay, missed connection and delayed baggage, none of which respond to an illness. This is card-specific: some other complimentary card policies do include limited COVID-19 medical or evacuation cover, so never assume it carries from one card to another. For COVID-19 medical and cancellation protection, buy a standalone policy that states it covers the virus.
- The Amex KrisFlyer Ascend provides travel accident cover of up to S$1,000,000. Personal accident cover is a lump sum paid for accidental death or permanent disablement, not a medical limit. The full S$1,000,000 applies to death, total disablement or the loss of two limbs or sight in both eyes, while S$500,000 applies to the loss of one limb or sight in one eye. A dependent child under 16 has a lower scale, up to S$100,000. The benefit only pays for an accident while you are travelling on a scheduled public conveyance, meaning a flight, ferry, train or bus you paid to board (a common carrier). It does not cover an ordinary accident on the ground or any overseas hospital bill.
- Claims go to Chubb Insurance Singapore, the underwriter. Submit your claim online at Chubb's Singapore claims centre or call +65 6299 0922, as soon as practicable and within 30 days of the incident. Keep the card statement showing the originating and return fare was charged, your boarding passes, and the airline's written confirmation of any delay or missed connection. For delayed baggage, get a Property Irregularity Report from the airline before you leave the airport. Only expenses charged to the card can be reimbursed. If Chubb denies a claim you believe is fair, you can escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, within 6 months of the final reply.
- A lot. There is no overseas medical cover, no emergency evacuation, no trip cancellation, no trip curtailment and no baggage-loss cover on the Amex KrisFlyer Ascend. The benefits stop at a travel accident lump sum and small cash payments for flight delay, missed connection and delayed baggage. Baggage cover is delay only, and it does not pay on the final leg of your flight home to Singapore. General exclusions include war and terrorism, except terrorism while on a public conveyance, along with self-inflicted injury, criminal acts, and accidents while under the influence of alcohol above the legal driving limit or non-prescribed drugs. There is also no personal liability cover and no rental-vehicle excess benefit, since no Singapore card offers one.
- Each trip is covered for up to 45 consecutive days. Cover ends at 12.01am Singapore time on the 46th day of a single trip, so a longer holiday or work posting leaves you uninsured for the extra days. There is also a cumulative cap: once your trips add up to more than 180 days in the policy year, you are not covered beyond the 181st day. The policy runs on a one-year period of insurance. If you travel often or plan a long trip, check the day count, because the accident and inconvenience benefits simply switch off once the limit is passed, with no option to extend.
- Almost certainly, yes. The Amex KrisFlyer Ascend cover is an accident-led add-on, not full travel insurance. It pays a large lump sum for a serious accident on a flight, ferry, train or bus, plus small cash benefits for delay and delayed baggage, but nothing for overseas medical treatment, evacuation, trip cancellation or lost bags. A single hospital admission abroad, which MediShield Life does not cover outside Singapore, can run past S$100,000. A standalone Singapore travel policy fills those gaps from around S$20 for a single trip and usually covers COVID-19 medical and cancellation too. Treat the card benefit as a top-up on the flight, not a replacement for real cover.
- No. The Amex KrisFlyer Ascend does not include mobile phone insurance, and it has no purchase protection or extended warranty either. If your phone is stolen abroad or the screen cracks, the repair or replacement is entirely on you, and a flagship handset costs S$1,200 to S$2,300 to replace. The card's complimentary benefits are limited to travel accident cover and small travel inconvenience payments for flight delay, missed connection and delayed baggage. For device cover you would need a separate gadget or mobile insurance policy, or a different card that specifically offers phone protection.
