Our take on travel insurance for the CIMB Visa Signature

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Scenario first: you are admitted to a hospital in Bangkok and expect the card's complimentary cover to help, but this Sompo policy pays nothing towards the bill. The CIMB Visa Signature travel insurance is really a personal-accident policy with a few small extras: S$300 for a 6-hour flight delay, S$300 for a 6-hour baggage delay, S$500 for lost baggage and S$300 of trip cancellation. There is no overseas medical cover and no emergency evacuation, so an overseas hospital admission is entirely on you, and MediShield Life does not pay for treatment outside Singapore. The S$500,000 headline sounds large, but it only pays for death or permanent disablement from an accident on a common carrier, meaning a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus you paid to ride. Even the small cash benefits go to the cardholder alone, and the policy excludes COVID-19 along with any epidemic or pandemic. As a free add-on that costs nothing extra, it is a minor bonus. As your only protection abroad it leaves the expensive risks uncovered, and a standalone Singapore travel policy from about S$20 a trip fills the medical, evacuation and cancellation gaps this card leaves open.

What works on travel
  • S$0 annual fee, free for life, so the cover costs nothing to hold
  • S$500,000 accidental death and permanent disablement for the cardholder or spouse, S$25,000 for a child, on a common carrier
  • Spouse and dependent children can be covered on the same trip when the fare is charged to the card
  • Cover activates automatically once the full trip fare is charged, with no separate registration form
Where travel breaks down
  • No overseas medical cover at all, so a hospital bill abroad is entirely yours
  • No emergency evacuation or repatriation, which can cost S$50,000 to S$120,000 from the region
  • Delay, baggage and cancellation caps top out at S$300 to S$500, far below real costs
  • COVID-19 and any epidemic or pandemic are excluded, including trip cancellation

What does CIMB Visa Signature Travel Insurance actually cover?

The S$500,000 headline is a common-carrier accident sum, not a medical limit. It pays only for death or disablement from an accident on a scheduled public conveyance.

Deductible : No deductible

Personal accident (a lump sum for accidental death or permanent disablement) pays up to S$500,000 for the cardholder or spouse and S$25,000 for a dependent child. It pays only when the accident happens while you are boarding, alighting or travelling as a fare-paying passenger on a common carrier, meaning a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus. The full trip fare must be charged to the CIMB Visa Signature before the trip.

Recommended : SGD 1,000,000

What's covered
  • Accidental death on a common carrier up to S$500,000
  • Permanent disablement, loss of limbs or loss of sight
  • Cardholder, spouse and dependent child each covered
What's not covered
  • War, terrorism (capped) and nuclear or radiation events
  • Suicide, self-inflicted injury and criminal acts
  • Pre-existing conditions, pregnancy, drugs and alcohol

No overseas emergency medical cover. This benefit is not included with this card. All medical costs overseas are the cardholder's responsibility. MediShield Life does not cover you outside Singapore, and a serious hospital admission in the US or Europe can run S$100,000 or more.

What's not covered
  • Overseas medical treatment is not a benefit of this card
  • Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy excluded

No emergency evacuation cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Emergency evacuation costs are entirely the cardholder's responsibility. An air ambulance from Bali or Bangkok back to Singapore runs S$50,000 to S$120,000.

What's not covered
  • Emergency medical evacuation is not a benefit of this card

No overseas emergency dental cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Emergency dental treatment overseas is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • Overseas emergency dental is not a benefit of this card

No hospital cash allowance. This benefit is not included with this card. There is no daily cash payment while you are hospitalised overseas.

What's not covered
  • Overseas hospital daily cash is not a benefit of this card
The S$300 cap makes this close to symbolic. Most cancelled trips lose far more than S$300 in prepaid flights and hotels.

Deductible : No deductible

Cancel a trip after a sudden illness or a death in the family and this benefit reimburses prepaid travel or accommodation you cannot recover, but only up to S$300 and only for the cardholder. The cap is so low it barely covers one forfeited hotel night, let alone a flight. Covered reasons include serious injury, sickness, quarantine or death of you, a relative or travel companion, strike or riot at the destination, serious damage to your home, and jury service.

What's covered
  • Serious injury, sickness, quarantine or death of the cardholder, a relative or travel companion
  • Unexpected strike, riot or civil commotion at the destination
  • Serious damage to your home, or witness summons or jury service
What's not covered
  • COVID-19 and any epidemic or pandemic
  • Cancellation by the common carrier
  • Loss refunded by a hotel, airline or travel agent, or covered by another policy

No trip curtailment cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost to fly home early after a family emergency and resume a trip is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • Trip curtailment is not a benefit of this card

No travel disruption cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Extra accommodation and transport from a trip disruption are the cardholder's responsibility.

What's not covered
  • Travel disruption is not a benefit of this card

Deductible : No deductible

If your scheduled flight is delayed 6 consecutive hours or more by strike, bad weather, mechanical breakdown or a structural fault, the card pays a flat benefit of up to S$300, and only to the cardholder. There is no top-up for longer delays: it is a single S$300, not a per-hour payment. Keep the airline's written confirmation of how long the flight was delayed and why.

Recommended : SGD 1,000

What's covered
  • Flat cash benefit for a delay of 6 consecutive hours or more
  • Delay caused by strike, adverse weather, mechanical breakdown or structural defect
What's not covered
  • Strike or industrial action known before the trip was booked
  • Onward connecting flights not caused by a covered event
  • Failure to check in on time

No missed connection cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost of alternative transport after a missed connection is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • Missed connection is not a benefit of this card
Cover is capped at S$500 with a S$200-per-item limit, so a lost suitcase of clothing usually returns only a fraction of its value.

Deductible : No deductible

If a natural disaster or an event outside your control causes you to lose personal baggage overseas, the card reimburses up to S$500, cardholder only. Sub-limits bite hard: no more than S$200 for any one item, pair or set, and a single laptop is capped at S$500. Ordinary theft or mysterious disappearance is not covered, and you must report the loss to police or the hotel or airline within 24 hours.

What's covered
  • Baggage lost overseas from a natural disaster or circumstances beyond your control
  • Up to S$500 in total, S$200 per article, one laptop up to S$500
What's not covered
  • Ordinary theft, mysterious disappearance or misplacement
  • Cash, jewellery, watches, phones, tablets and travel documents
  • Baggage left unattended in a public place

Deductible : No deductible

When the airline delays, misdirects or temporarily misplaces your checked baggage for at least 6 consecutive hours after you land overseas, the card pays up to S$300 for the cardholder to tide you over. For the same event you can claim baggage delay or baggage loss, not both. Keep the airline's written confirmation of how long the bag was delayed.

What's covered
  • Checked baggage delayed 6 consecutive hours or more after arrival overseas
  • Up to S$300 for the cardholder
What's not covered
  • Delays on your return to Singapore at the end of the trip
  • Baggage delay where a baggage loss claim is made for the same event

No travel documents cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost to replace a lost passport or reclaim fraudulent card use overseas is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • Loss of travel documents is not a benefit of this card

No personal liability cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Legal liability for injury to others or property damage overseas is uninsured, and claims commonly reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.

What's not covered
  • Personal liability overseas is not a benefit of this card

Perpetual fee waiver, worth keeping

One of the few cards that has perpetual fee waiver. Definitely a card to keep solely because of the reason.

No annual fee and good dining rebates

This credit card attracts me firstly as it does not charge annual fee. Online application process was seamless and the credit card was posted to me a couple of days later. Certainly, this card is great to have to pay for dining expenses as it gives out rebates.

Useful but cashback keeps shrinking

I holding this card for so many years, it's useful but cash back getting lesser and lesser. Hope the bank can consider to increase cash back

How to make a CIMB Visa Signature travel insurance claim

1

Step 1: Notify Sompo within 14 days of the accident

Tell Sompo Insurance Singapore as soon as possible and no later than 14 days after the accident. Call +65 6461 6555 or email emailus@sompo.com.sg. There is no overseas emergency line to call, because the policy carries no medical or evacuation assistance.

2

Step 2: Complete the claim form and gather originals

Submit the completed claim form within 15 days of notifying Sompo, with original itemised bills, medical certificates or reports, and a police, hotel or airline report where relevant. Photocopies are not accepted, so keep every original document.

3

Step 3: Prove the fare was charged, and escalate to FIDReC if needed

Include the card statement showing the full trip fare was charged to the CIMB Visa Signature, which the insurer checks before paying. If Sompo declines a claim you believe is fair, you can escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, an independent body that reviews disputes between consumers and insurers.

FAQ

What people ask about the CIMB Visa Signature

  • The complimentary cover switches on when you charge the full trip fare, meaning the round-trip air ticket and travel expenses, to the card before you travel. There is no fixed dollar spend and no separate registration form to submit. Holding the card is not enough on its own, and the policy is clear that if any part of the fare is paid by cash, cheque or another card, the cover does not apply. You also need at least one transaction charged to the card in the year before the trip, and the card must be valid and in good standing. Keep the card statement showing the fare was charged, since the insurer checks it at claim time.
  • The cover extends to the principal or supplementary cardholder, the legally married spouse, and dependent children who travel with the cardholder on the same trip. A dependent child means a legal child under 21, or under 25 if a full-time student, who is unmarried and not working. Everyone must be a Singaporean, permanent resident, or a foreigner holding a valid pass, and the adults must be aged 21 to 75. The accidental death sum is S$500,000 each for the cardholder and spouse and S$25,000 for a child. The small cash benefits for flight delay, baggage and trip cancellation are for the cardholder only, so a spouse or child cannot claim those.
  • No. This is the biggest gap in the CIMB Visa Signature cover. The Sompo policy is built around personal accident, and it has no overseas medical expenses benefit and no emergency evacuation. If you fall ill or are injured abroad and need a hospital, the treatment bill is entirely yours. This matters because MediShield Life and Integrated Shield Plans do not pay for overseas leisure treatment, and a serious admission in the United States or Europe can run past S$100,000. The card cannot help with any of it. For real medical protection abroad you need a standalone travel insurance policy, which covers overseas hospital bills and evacuation from around S$20 for a single trip.
  • No. The policy carries a clear exclusion for Coronavirus, COVID-19 and any of its variants, and for any epidemic or pandemic declared by the World Health Organization or a government authority. So if a COVID-19 infection disrupts your trip, the card pays nothing, whether that is a cancelled trip or a hospital stay abroad. It is worth stressing because handling differs from card to card: some Singapore cards cover COVID-19 medical or evacuation, while several exclude it entirely as this one does. If COVID-19 cover matters to you, buy a standalone travel policy that names it, since the card gives you none for either medical treatment or cancellation.
  • The CIMB Visa Signature provides personal accident cover, a lump sum for accidental death or permanent disablement, of up to S$500,000 for the cardholder and up to S$500,000 for the spouse, with S$25,000 for a dependent child. This is the accident sum, not a general medical limit, and it only pays when the accident happens while you are boarding, alighting or travelling as a fare-paying passenger on a common carrier, meaning a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus. A fall in your hotel or a crash on a self-drive holiday would not qualify. Death or the certified disablement must occur within 180 days of the accident, and permanent disablement pays a set percentage of the sum based on the injury.
  • Claims are handled by Sompo Insurance Singapore, the underwriter, not by CIMB. Notify Sompo as soon as possible and no later than 14 days after the accident, then submit a completed claim form within 15 days of that notice. You will need original documents: itemised bills, medical certificates or reports, a police or carrier report where relevant, and the card statement proving the full fare was charged to the card. You can reach Sompo on +65 6461 6555 or emailus@sompo.com.sg. Photocopies are not accepted, so keep originals. If Sompo declines a claim and you believe it is unfair, you can escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, an independent body that reviews consumer disputes with insurers.
  • Quite a lot. Beyond the S$500,000 common-carrier accident sum and a handful of small cash benefits, the CIMB Visa Signature has no overseas medical, no emergency evacuation, no trip curtailment, no missed-connection cover, no travel-document cover and no personal liability. COVID-19 and any pandemic are excluded, as are pre-existing conditions, pregnancy, war, terrorism beyond a capped amount, and injuries from high-risk activities like scuba diving, mountaineering or skydiving. The cover applies overseas only, and only if the full fare was charged to the card. Baggage claims exclude cash, jewellery, watches, phones, tablets and travel documents, and the trip cancellation and delay caps are just S$300. Read the exclusions in the policy before you rely on the card abroad.
  • Each round trip is covered for up to 90 days. The policy defines a trip as beginning three hours before you leave Singapore and ending on your return home, on arrival back in Singapore, or after 90 consecutive days, whichever comes first. If your journey runs longer than 90 days, the days beyond that are not covered, even if the trip started while the policy was in force. There is no way to extend a single trip past the 90-day cap under this card. For a long stay abroad, a working holiday or a multi-month trip, an annual or long-stay standalone travel policy is the safer choice, since the card's cover simply stops at day 90.
  • Almost certainly, yes. The CIMB Visa Signature cover is an accident-led policy, not full travel insurance. It pays a S$500,000 sum for death or disablement on a common carrier and small cash amounts for delays and lost baggage, but nothing for general overseas medical treatment, emergency evacuation or a cancelled trip caused by illness. A single hospital admission abroad, which MediShield Life does not cover, can cost more than S$100,000. A standalone Singapore travel policy fills those gaps from around S$20 for one trip and usually covers COVID-19 medical and cancellation too. Treat this card's cover as a small free top-up, not a replacement for a proper travel insurance policy.
  • No. The CIMB Visa Signature does not include mobile phone insurance, and it has no purchase protection or extended warranty either. If your phone screen cracks or the handset is lost or stolen, the repair or replacement is entirely on you, and a flagship screen repair alone runs about S$200 to S$600. The card's complimentary benefits are limited to the Sompo travel-accident policy, which covers overseas accident, small delay and baggage cash, and trip cancellation up to S$300. For device cover you would need a separate gadget or mobile insurance policy, or a different card that specifically offers phone protection. Do not count on this card if protecting your phone is the priority.
