The personal accident benefit (a lump sum for accidental death or permanent disablement) pays up to S$1,000,000 for the cardholder, spouse or a dependent child on a covered trip whose fare was charged to the card. As Card Type 3, the highest of the three tiers in the Maybank certificate, the Horizon Visa Signature carries the largest accident sum. It is a common-carrier travel accident sum, meaning it applies to an accident during the journey, including while you ride, board or alight a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus. For a child under 16, the accidental death payout is limited to S$1,000.

Our take on travel insurance for the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature
Picture an accident on your flight to Tokyo: the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature carries the top tier of Maybank's complimentary travel personal accident cover, paying a lump sum (a one-off payment for death or serious permanent injury) of up to S$1,000,000 from a common-carrier accident, meaning an accident on a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus whose fare you charged to the card. Around that headline sits only small cash: up to S$200 for a missed connection, up to S$500 if a checked bag is lost, plus sports-equipment cover up to S$100 and hijack miscellaneous expenses up to S$1,000. There is no overseas medical benefit, so an ordinary hospital admission abroad is entirely on you, and MediShield Life, Singapore's national health insurance, does not pay for treatment outside Singapore. There is no evacuation for a living patient either: the only repatriation benefit is S$5,000 to bring back mortal remains after a death, not to fly a sick or injured cardholder home. There is no trip cancellation, so prepaid flights and hotels are not refundable if you call the trip off. The cover switches on automatically when the travel fare is charged to the card, with no form to submit. Treat the S$1,000,000 as an accident bonus, not travel insurance, and pair it with a standalone Singapore policy from about S$20 a trip that pays the medical bills, evacuation and cancellation this certificate leaves out.
- S$1,000,000 personal accident lump sum for accidental death or permanent disablement from an accident on a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus, the highest tier in the Maybank certificate
- Cover extends to your spouse and dependent children under 23 on a trip whose fare was charged to the card
- Activates automatically when you charge the covered-trip fare to the card, with no opt-in form to submit
- Runs worldwide for the whole journey, up to 90 days per trip, and adds sports-equipment cover up to S$100 and hijack expenses up to S$1,000
- No overseas medical: an illness or accident hospital bill abroad is not paid, and MediShield Life does not cover you outside Singapore
- No emergency evacuation for a living patient: the only repatriation benefit is S$5,000 for mortal remains after a death
- No trip cancellation or curtailment, so prepaid flights and hotels are lost if you cancel or cut a trip short
- The luggage and missed-connection benefits are small, S$200 to S$500 per person, meant for a meal and a night, not real losses

This is a reimbursement, so keep the receipts. The amount is small and meant for a meal and a night, not a full re-routing.

How to make a Maybank Horizon Visa Signature travel accident claim
Step 1: Notify Etiqa Insurance as soon as possible
Start your claim with Etiqa Insurance within the notice period in the certificate, commonly 30 days of the incident. Only expenses charged to the Horizon Visa Signature can be reimbursed where the benefit requires the fare to be charged to the card.
Step 2: Gather the proof Etiqa Insurance needs
Keep the card statement showing the fare was charged, your boarding passes, and for a medical claim the doctor's report and receipts. For delayed or lost baggage, get a Property Irregularity Report from the airline before leaving the airport; for theft, file a police report within 24 hours.
Step 3: Escalate to FIDReC if a fair claim is denied
If Etiqa Insurance rejects a claim you believe is valid, escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, within 6 months of the insurer's final reply. FIDReC independently mediates disputes between consumers and financial institutions in Singapore.
What people ask about the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature
- It activates automatically: you charge the fare for the covered trip, such as your air ticket, to the Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card, and the cover runs for that journey. There is no form to submit and no fixed dollar spend threshold, it is the travel fare itself that switches the cover on. If a trip is only partly paid with the card, the benefit is reduced in proportion, so if half the ticket was charged to the card, only half the benefit applies. Because this is an accident-led certificate, activation still leaves you without overseas medical, evacuation for a living patient or trip cancellation cover.
- The cover extends to the principal cardholder, the spouse, and dependent children who are under 23 years old at the time of booking the covered trip. Each is an insured person only for a trip whose fare was charged to the card. The personal accident sum is up to S$1,000,000 per insured person, but for a child under 16 the accidental death payout is limited to S$1,000. Family members are not insured for medical bills, because this certificate carries no overseas medical benefit for anyone.
- No. This certificate is a travel personal accident policy, so it pays a lump sum for accidental death or serious permanent injury, but it has no overseas medical benefit at all. If you are admitted to hospital abroad for an illness or an accident, the treatment bill is entirely your own cost. MediShield Life, Singapore's national health insurance, does not pay for treatment received outside Singapore, and a serious admission in the US or Europe can run past S$100,000. A standalone travel insurance policy is what covers those bills.
- No. There is no emergency medical evacuation for a living patient on this card. The only repatriation benefit is up to S$5,000 to bring back mortal remains after a death on a covered trip, which is a very different thing. An air ambulance to fly a sick or injured cardholder from Bali or Bangkok back to Singapore commonly costs S$50,000 to S$120,000, and none of that is covered here. If evacuation matters to you, you need a standalone travel policy that includes it.
- No. The certificate only covers accidental bodily injury, not illness, so a COVID-19 infection and any hospital treatment for it are not covered. There is no overseas medical benefit of any kind on this card, and no trip cancellation, so a positive test that forces you to cancel or that lands you in hospital abroad pays nothing. A standalone Singapore travel insurance policy that treats COVID-19 like any other illness, for medical and cancellation, is the way to cover this.
- It provides personal accident cover of up to S$1,000,000, a lump sum paid for accidental death or permanent disablement, for the cardholder, spouse or a dependent child on a covered trip. This is the accident sum, not a general medical limit, and it applies to an accident during the journey, including on a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus, which is what common carrier means. As Card Type 3 in the Maybank certificate, the Horizon Visa Signature sits at the highest of the three tiers, above the S$300,000 and S$500,000 cards. For a child under 16 the accidental death amount is capped at S$1,000.
- Claims are handled by Etiqa, the underwriter of the cover, which Maybank Singapore arranges. Give written notice as soon as possible, and in any event within four weeks of the accident, and supply the certificates, bills and evidence the insurer asks for, together with your card statement showing the trip fare was charged to the card. Keep any police, hotel or airline report where the benefit requires one, such as a Property Irregularity Report for lost luggage. If the insurer denies a fair claim and you disagree, you can escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre in Singapore.
- Cover applies for the duration of a covered trip, worldwide, up to a maximum of 90 days for any one trip. It starts when you leave your normal home or place of business, whichever is last, and ends when you return, and everyday commuting to and from work is not included. If you travel for longer than 90 days on a single trip, the later part of the journey is outside this cover, so a long trip needs a standalone policy that matches its length.
- Almost certainly, yes. This card is an accident-led certificate, not full travel insurance: it pays a personal accident lump sum of up to S$1,000,000 plus small luggage and missed-connection cash, but nothing for general overseas medical treatment, evacuation of a living patient or trip cancellation. A single hospital admission abroad, which MediShield Life does not cover outside Singapore, can run past S$100,000. A standalone travel insurance policy fills those gaps from around S$20 for a single trip and usually covers COVID-19 medical and cancellation too. Treat the card cover as an accident top-up, not a replacement.
- No. The Maybank Horizon Visa Signature card does not include mobile phone insurance, and it carries no purchase protection or extended warranty either. If your phone screen cracks or the handset is stolen, the repair or replacement is entirely on you, and a flagship screen repair alone runs about S$200 to S$600. The card's complimentary benefit is limited to the travel personal accident certificate. For device protection you would need a separate gadget or mobile insurance policy, or a card that specifically offers phone cover.
