Our take on travel insurance for the UOB Absolute Cashback

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

The UOB Absolute Cashback is a flat-rate cashback card, and its complimentary UOB Absolute Cashback travel insurance is accident-led, not a full policy. It pays a S$500,000 personal accident sum (a lump sum for accidental death or permanent disablement) that applies only to an accident on a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus you paid to ride overseas, plus S$50,000 of emergency medical evacuation that does include COVID-19 but pays the transport only, not the hospital bill. Beyond that there is a small delay cash benefit and nothing else. There is no general overseas medical treatment cover and no trip cancellation, so a hospital admission abroad, which MediShield Life does not pay for outside Singapore, lands entirely on you. The cover also switches on only when you charge the full air fare to the card and submit the opt-in form (an electronic registration you complete before you fly); miss the opt-in and there is no cover at all. As a free extra it is thin, so treat it as a top-up and pair it with a standalone medical-inclusive travel policy, which starts at around S$20 for a single trip and pays the hospital bills, cancellations and lost bags this card leaves out.

What works on travel
  • S$500,000 personal accident for the cardmember or spouse, S$30,000 for a child, on a scheduled flight, ferry or train
  • S$50,000 emergency medical evacuation and repatriation, with COVID-19 illness included
  • Travel delay pays S$100 after 6 hours, then S$50 per further 6 hours, up to S$200 per person
  • Spouse and dependent children can be covered on the same opted-in trip
Where travel breaks down
  • Opt-in trap: charge the full air fare to the card and submit the electronic form before departure, or there is no cover at all
  • No general overseas medical: the S$50,000 benefit pays evacuation transport only, not the hospital bill
  • No trip cancellation and no baggage cover, so most everyday travel mishaps are on you
  • Personal accident only pays for an accident on a scheduled flight, ferry or train, not a general travel accident

What does UOB Absolute Cashback Travel Insurance actually cover?

The S$500,000 headline is the accidental death sum, and it pays only for an accident on a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus. It is not a general overseas medical limit.

Deductible : No deductible

The personal accident benefit (a lump sum for accidental death or permanent disablement) pays up to S$500,000 for the cardmember or spouse and S$30,000 for a dependent child, capped at S$500,000 per family. It applies only to an accident on a scheduled public conveyance overseas, meaning a flight, ferry, train or bus you paid to ride, not a general travel accident. The full air fare must be charged to the card and the trip opted in before departure.

Recommended : SGD 1,000,000

What's covered
  • Accidental death overseas on a scheduled public conveyance
  • Permanent total disablement, loss of limbs or loss of sight
  • Cardmember, spouse and dependent children aged 3 months to 23 years
What's not covered
  • War, terrorism, nuclear and chemical events
  • Self-inflicted injury, suicide, criminal acts
  • Intoxicants, drugs, pregnancy, HIV

No overseas medical cover. The 24-hour assistance line arranges evacuation, but the hospital treatment bill is not paid. All medical costs overseas are the cardholder's responsibility, and a serious admission in the US or Europe can run S$100,000 or more, none of which MediShield Life covers abroad.

What's not covered
  • General overseas medical treatment is not a benefit of this card
  • Physician fees and hospital charges excluded even under the evacuation benefit
  • Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy excluded
COVID-19 evacuation is covered, but this benefit pays only for transport, not the hospital bill, and there is no general overseas medical cover on this card.

Deductible : No deductible

This is the card's only medical benefit: up to S$50,000 to evacuate and repatriate you to the nearest suitable hospital or back to Singapore, arranged by UOI's 24-hour assistance line. It explicitly includes evacuation for a COVID-19 illness overseas. It pays the transport only, not the hospital treatment, and pre-existing conditions are excluded.

What's covered
  • Emergency medical evacuation to the nearest registered medical institution
  • Repatriation to Singapore or your home country
  • Evacuation for a COVID-19 illness overseas
What's not covered
  • Hospital and physician treatment fees
  • Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy
  • Transport not approved by the assistance provider

No overseas emergency dental cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Emergency dental treatment overseas is out of pocket.

  • Overseas emergency dental treatment is not a benefit of this card

No hospital cash allowance. This benefit is not included with this card. There is no daily cash payment while you are hospitalised overseas.

What's not covered
  • Overseas hospital daily cash is not a benefit of this card

No trip cancellation. This benefit is not included with this card. Prepaid flights, hotels, and tours are not reimbursable if you cancel. A standalone travel insurance policy is required for this coverage.

What's not covered
  • Trip cancellation is not a benefit of any UOB complimentary policy
  • COVID-19 cancellation not covered
  • Pre-existing conditions excluded

No trip curtailment cover. This benefit is not included with this card. The cost to fly home early after a family emergency and resume a trip is out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • Trip curtailment is not a benefit of this card

No travel disruption cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Extra accommodation and transport from a trip disruption are the cardholder's responsibility.

What's not covered
  • Travel disruption and additional expenses are not a benefit of this card

Deductible : No deductible

Travel delay pays a cash benefit if your scheduled flight is delayed at least 6 hours by industrial action, bad weather or a mechanical fault: S$100 for the first 6 hours and S$50 for each further 6 hours, up to S$200 per person and S$400 per family. You must be at the departure point of the scheduled conveyance, and the delay cannot be in Singapore or your home country. Keep the airline's written confirmation of the delay and its cause.

Recommended : SGD 1,000

What's covered
  • Cash benefit for a delay of 6 hours or more
  • Delay caused by industrial action, adverse weather or mechanical fault
What's not covered
  • Delays in Singapore or your home country
  • Delays known before departure

Deductible : No deductible

If you miss a connecting flight because the incoming flight was early or late, or you are denied boarding overseas due to overbooking, the card reimburses accommodation, meals and refreshments after a delay of more than 6 hours, up to S$100 per person and S$200 per family. This is a reimbursement, so keep the receipts. The amount is small: it is meant for a few meals and a night, not a full re-routing.

What's covered
  • Missed connection from an early or late incoming flight
  • Denied boarding overseas due to overbooking
  • Accommodation, meals and refreshments during the wait
What's not covered
  • Amounts already compensated by the airline or another party

What's not covered
  • Loss of travel documents and money is not a benefit of this card

No personal liability cover. This benefit is not included with this card. Legal liability for injury to others or property damage overseas is uninsured, and claims commonly reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.

What's not covered
  • Personal liability overseas is not a benefit of this card

How to make a UOB Absolute Cashback claim

1

Step 1: Call the UOI 24-hour assistance line before any evacuation

For a medical emergency overseas, call UOI Emergency Assist on +65 6222 7737 before arranging transport, so the appointed provider can authorise and coordinate it. Approval by the provider is a condition of the S$50,000 evacuation benefit.

2

Step 2: Give written notice within 30 days and gather your documents

Notify UOI within 30 days of the incident on +65 6222 7733 or contactus@uoi.com.sg. Collect itemised bills, any police or carrier report, your boarding pass, and the card statement showing the air fare was charged to the card.

3

Step 3: Submit proof the fare was charged and the trip was opted in

Return the completed claim form and evidence within 30 days. The insurer checks that the full air fare was charged to the card and the trip opted in before departure. If a fair claim is denied, you can escalate free to FIDReC within 6 months of the final reply.

FAQ

What people ask about the UOB Absolute Cashback

  • The overseas cover on the UOB Absolute Cashback switches on only when you charge the full air fare to the card and submit UOB's electronic opt-in form, confirmed before departure of the trip. Holding the card is not enough, and there is no dollar spend threshold: it is the full public-conveyance fare that counts, and departure must be within 12 months of paying it. Hotels, land tours and insurance charges do not count as the travel fare. Submit the opt-in for each trip and keep the confirmation, because a charged fare with no opt-in still leaves you uninsured.
  • The cover extends to the principal cardmember, the legally married spouse, and dependent children aged 3 months to 23 years who are unemployed and unmarried. Each has their own sum insured: S$500,000 for the cardmember or spouse and S$30,000 for a child, capped at S$500,000 for the whole family. Family members are only covered on a trip whose full air fare was charged to the card and opted in before departure. Because this is an accident-led policy, do not assume a spouse or child is insured for medical costs beyond the shared S$50,000 evacuation benefit. Check the covered-persons definition in the certificate before you count on it.
  • No. The UOB Absolute Cashback has no general overseas medical benefit. Its only medical-related cover is up to S$50,000 for emergency evacuation and repatriation, which pays to transport you to a suitable hospital or back to Singapore, not the treatment itself. The doctor and hospital charges are your responsibility, and a serious admission in the US, Europe or Japan can run past S$100,000. MediShield Life and Integrated Shield Plans do not pay for overseas leisure treatment either, so without a standalone travel policy an overseas hospital bill is entirely out of pocket.
  • Yes, but only for medical evacuation. The UOB Absolute Cashback includes COVID-19 within its S$50,000 emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation benefit, provided you activated the cover by charging the full air fare to the card and opting in before departure. There is no general overseas medical benefit and no trip cancellation cover, so an ordinary COVID hospital stay or a cancelled trip is not reimbursed. Pre-existing conditions stay excluded. This position is card-specific: several other complimentary policies exclude COVID-19 entirely, so never assume it carries from one card to another.
  • The UOB Absolute Cashback provides personal accident cover of S$500,000, a lump sum paid for accidental death or permanent disablement, with S$30,000 for a dependent child and a S$500,000 family cap. This is the accident sum, not a general medical limit, and it applies only to an accident on a scheduled public conveyance, meaning a flight, ferry, train or bus you paid to ride overseas. The card's only medical benefit is S$50,000 of emergency evacuation, so an ordinary hospital bill overseas is not covered. Read the benefit table in the certificate, because the amount that applies depends on who was travelling and how the accident happened.
  • Claims go through UOI (United Overseas Insurance), the underwriter, on +65 6222 7733 or contactus@uoi.com.sg, with the 24-hour emergency assistance and evacuation line on +65 6222 7737. Give written notice within 30 days of the incident and keep the documents that prove it: itemised bills, a police or property report where relevant, your boarding pass, and the card statement showing the air fare was charged. Call the assistance line before arranging any evacuation. If the insurer denies the claim and you disagree, you can escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, within 6 months of the insurer's final reply.
  • The cover is much thinner than 'complimentary travel insurance' suggests. Beyond the S$500,000 personal accident sum and S$50,000 emergency evacuation, there is no general overseas medical, no trip cancellation, no baggage and no personal liability cover, so most everyday travel mishaps are on you. The biggest trap is activation: charge the full air fare to the card and submit the opt-in form before departure, or there is no cover at all. Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy are excluded, as are war, terrorism and self-inflicted injury. Cover is overseas-only and applies to accidents on scheduled public conveyances, and there is no rental-vehicle excess benefit, since no Singapore card offers one.
  • The complimentary cover applies to overseas trips and must begin within 12 months of charging the air fare to the card. Because this is an accident-and-evacuation certificate rather than full travel insurance, the practical limit is what it leaves out: there is no general overseas medical, cancellation or baggage cover no matter how long or short the trip. For a longer journey, or any trip where you want hospital treatment, cancellation and baggage cover, a standalone single-trip or annual travel policy is the safer choice. Always read the certificate for the exact per-trip conditions before you rely on it.
  • Almost certainly, yes. The UOB Absolute Cashback is an accident-led certificate, not full travel insurance: it pays a S$500,000 personal accident sum and S$50,000 of emergency evacuation, but nothing for general overseas medical treatment, trip cancellation or baggage. A single unexpected hospital admission abroad, which MediShield Life does not cover outside Singapore, can run past S$100,000. For fuller protection, a standalone travel insurance policy fills those gaps from around S$20 for a single trip and usually covers COVID-19 medical and cancellation too. Treat the card cover as a top-up, not a replacement.
  • No. The UOB Absolute Cashback does not include mobile phone insurance, and it carries no purchase protection or extended warranty either. If your phone screen cracks or the handset is stolen, the repair or replacement is entirely on you, and a flagship screen repair alone runs about S$200 to S$600. This card's complimentary benefits are limited to overseas travel accident and evacuation cover. For device protection, you would need a separate gadget or mobile insurance policy, or a card that specifically offers phone cover.
