Our take on travel insurance for the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Mastercard
No trip cancellation. No emergency medical. No travel protection at all on this card. You're booking a $4,500 international business trip on this card and planning to rely on it for emergencies. Here is the reality the Guide to Benefits spells out: the Travel and Emergency Assistance service connects you with providers by phone. It does not reimburse anything. Most cardholders assume a no-fee business card carries at least some trip cancellation or emergency medical coverage. It does not. Standalone travel insurance covering $100,000 in emergency medical plus trip cancellation runs $60 to $120 for a one-week business trip. If you travel internationally without a separate policy, every medical bill, canceled flight, and delayed bag comes entirely out of pocket.
- Travel and Emergency Assistance at 1-800-307-2309: free 24/7 referral line for emergency medical providers, legal help, and travel logistics worldwide
- Mastercard Global Service included: emergency card replacement and emergency cash advance available in 210+ countries
- $0 annual fee: the referral services come at no annual cost to the cardholder
- No trip cancellation coverage: a non-refundable business flight canceled due to illness is a total loss
- No emergency medical coverage: a single ER visit abroad averages $15,000 to $80,000, all paid out of pocket
- No emergency evacuation: medical transport from a remote location can exceed $100,000, not covered by this card
- Referral-only travel assistance: the card connects you to providers but pays nothing toward medical bills, transport, or lodging
- No trip delay or baggage coverage of any kind
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

What cardholders say about the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Mastercard
Real experiences on rental car coverage and purchase protection claims 35 reviews

MasterRental CDW worked, but paperwork was extensive
Used the MasterRental CDW benefit after a minor collision on a Denver business rental. Filed through cardbenefitservices.com within the 45-day window. Needed the rental agreement front and back, the agency damage report, repair photos, and the card statement showing the full rental charge. Since coverage is secondary, I had to file with my personal auto insurance first and get their response letter before the card would pay. Total process took about six weeks from the incident. Approval was clean once everything was submitted. For a free business card, it works if you have patience for the paperwork.

No medical coverage abroad, found out mid-emergency
Used this card for a business trip to Europe. Had a medical issue that required urgent care. Called the Travel and Emergency Assistance line and they gave me names of clinics nearby, which was useful. But the card paid nothing toward the bill. The $800 urgent care visit was entirely mine. I had assumed a Bank of America business card would have at least basic emergency medical coverage. It does not. The guide lists six benefits: MasterRental, purchase protection, ID theft monitoring, global service, easy savings, and extended warranty. Emergency medical is not among them.

Purchase Security claim denied due to carrier exclusion
Filed a Purchase Security claim after a business laptop was damaged inside my checked bag on a flight. The claim was denied because damage that occurs while a common carrier has control of an item is excluded. I appealed, arguing the damage was discovered after I retrieved the bag, but the adjuster applied the exclusion anyway. Three weeks of back and forth with no resolution. The 90-day window combined with the carrier exclusion leaves a real gap: damage to items in transit, where damage is most likely to happen, is not covered.

What people ask about the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Mastercard
- This card does not include traditional travel insurance benefits such as trip cancellation, emergency medical, or trip delay coverage. There is nothing to activate for travel insurance. The card does include Travel and Emergency Assistance Services, which provide referral support at no cost. To access those referrals, call 1-800-307-2309 from the United States or collect at 1-636-722-7111 from outside the US. The referral line is available 24 hours a day. Keep in mind the service connects you with providers but does not pay any costs. All expenses remain your responsibility.
- MasterRental car rental coverage applies to you as the primary cardholder when you charge the full rental to your card. For Purchase Security and Extended Warranty, coverage applies to items purchased by you using your covered card. The Travel and Emergency Assistance referral line is available to you and, in many cases, your Immediate Family Members traveling with you. Coverage does not automatically extend to employees on your business account unless they are authorized users. Review Guide to Benefits CCI-01-21-2467.B for exact definitions of eligible cardholder and immediate family member.
- So, you're at the rental counter ready to pick up the keys. The agent offers their collision damage waiver (CDW) for $15 to $25 per day. Decline it. Charge the full rental to your card. MasterRental coverage activates automatically. If the vehicle is damaged or stolen, the card covers up to $50,000 in repair or replacement costs, with no deductible. Coverage is secondary, meaning your personal auto insurance pays first. The MasterRental benefit covers up to 31 consecutive days per rental. File claims at www.cardbenefitservices.com within 45 days of the incident.
- Claims for MasterRental, Purchase Security, and Extended Warranty go through the Benefits Administrator at www.cardbenefitservices.com. For rental car damage, file within 45 days of the incident. You will need the rental agreement, the agency's damage report, photos of the damage, and your card statement showing the full rental charge. For Purchase Security, file within 90 days of the loss or theft, with a dated receipt, a description of the damage, and a police report if the item was stolen. Some cardholders report clean approvals in two to three weeks. Others describe document resubmission cycles and waits of six to eight weeks. File the day the incident happens.
- This card does not include trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, emergency medical coverage abroad, emergency evacuation, baggage delay, or lost luggage protection. None of those benefits exist in the Guide to Benefits CCI-01-21-2467.B. The Travel and Emergency Assistance service provides referral numbers only: all costs remain yours. On the rental car side, coverage is secondary and excludes exotic or antique vehicles, motorcycles, trucks, and vans with more than eight passengers. Cell phone protection is not included. If you travel internationally for business, this card leaves emergency medical and evacuation costs entirely unaddressed.
- The MasterRental benefit on this card is secondary coverage. Secondary means your personal auto insurance policy pays first in the event of a collision or theft of the rental vehicle. The card then covers what your personal insurance does not, up to $50,000 per rental. In practice, secondary coverage means filing two separate claims: one with your personal insurer, then one with the card's Benefits Administrator. This also carries the risk of raising your personal auto insurance premiums. Primary CDW requires a Mastercard World or World Elite tier card. Always decline the rental agency's CDW regardless.
- Cell phone protection is not included with this card. The Guide to Benefits CCI-01-21-2467.B lists six coverage areas: Mastercard ID Theft Protection, Mastercard Global Service, MasterRental, Mastercard Easy Savings, Travel and Emergency Assistance, and Purchase Security/Extended Protection. Dedicated cell phone coverage against accidental damage or theft is absent. If a phone purchased with this card is accidentally damaged within 90 days of purchase, Purchase Security may apply, up to $10,000 with no deductible. For ongoing cell phone damage protection beyond that window, you would need a plan through your wireless carrier or a standalone device insurance policy.
- Yes, for any international business travel, separate travel insurance is strongly advisable. This card includes no trip cancellation, no emergency medical coverage, and no emergency evacuation benefit. A medical emergency abroad can easily cost $30,000 to $150,000. Business travel insurance covering cancellation, emergency medical at $100,000 or more, and evacuation typically runs $50 to $120 for a one-week international trip. For domestic business travel, the gap is smaller: delays and cancellations are uncovered, but medical costs are more manageable with US health insurance. Either way, this card's travel benefits are limited to referral-only assistance and secondary rental car CDW.
