Our take on travel insurance for the Citi Double Cash

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Your flight gets cancelled. Your bag goes missing. The hotel you booked is non-refundable. The Citi Double Cash provides $0 reimbursement for any of those. This is not a travel insurance card. There is no trip cancellation coverage, no trip delay, no baggage protection of any kind, and no emergency medical coverage abroad. The entire value of this card is in the 2% flat cashback: 1% when you buy, 1% when you pay. If you need travel protection, the Citi Double Cash is the wrong card to charge your airfare to.

What works on travel
  • World Elite Mastercard network: access to Mastercard Travel services and global assistance hotline
  • $0 annual fee: no cost to keep the card as a backup or cashback card for everyday spending
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation or interruption insurance at any dollar amount
  • No trip delay coverage: any flight delay expense is entirely out of pocket
  • No emergency medical coverage abroad: all hospital costs are the cardholder's responsibility
  • No lost or damaged baggage protection
  • No emergency evacuation coverage
Our methodology

Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

Great cashback, don't expect insurance

The 2% cashback is genuinely the reason to have this card. Don't pick it for travel protection, there is none. I use it for everyday spending and pair it with a Sapphire Reserve when I travel.

No CDW caught me off guard at the rental counter

Tried to use the Double Cash for rental car protection thinking it was a World Elite Mastercard perk. No CDW. The agent had to explain that Citi does not activate that benefit on this card. Had to buy the agency's coverage.

For the exact terms, download the official Guide to Benefits from your Citi account at citi.com.

  • The Citi Double Cash card's main benefit is its 2% cashback reward structure (1% at purchase, 1% at payment). In terms of insurance and protections, the confirmed benefits are: Extended Warranty via New Hampshire Insurance Company (AIG) and Mastercard ID Theft Protection monitoring. There is no trip cancellation, trip delay, rental car CDW, emergency medical, baggage, cell phone, or purchase protection included.
  • Yes. The Citi Double Cash was upgraded to World Elite Mastercard in 2020. However, World Elite status does not automatically activate all possible World Elite benefits.
