Our opinion on Citi Simplicity® Travel Insurance

Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Zero travel coverage. Every protection was cut. Here is what that gap actually costs when something goes wrong on a trip paid with this card. Citi Simplicity credit card benefits no longer include any travel insurance. In September 2019, Citi terminated trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, baggage delay, lost baggage, worldwide travel accident insurance, and emergency assistance on the Simplicity and most of its card lineup. Nothing replaced those protections. Today, if you book flights, hotels, or a cruise with this card and your trip is disrupted, every dollar of loss is yours. The benchmark for standalone trip cancellation is $10,000 per person. A single overnight hotel due to a 6-hour delay runs $150 to $400. A lost checked bag claim averages $1,200 to $1,800 in documented losses. Emergency medical abroad runs $20,000 to $80,000 for a serious incident. None of these scenarios are covered by this card in any amount. The Mastercard Standard tier does not include any travel insurance benefits. World and World Elite Mastercards carry some protections at the network level, but Citi Simplicity is Standard — those benefits do not apply here. If you plan to book any travel with this card, budget for a standalone travel insurance policy. The Citi Simplicity is a debt management tool, not a travel card.

What works on travel
  • $0 annual fee means zero cost to carry alongside a travel card with real coverage
  • No penalty APR if you miss a payment while traveling
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation, no trip interruption, no coverage for any non-refundable trip cost
  • No emergency medical: every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is yours
  • No travel delay coverage: meals, hotel, and transport during delays are entirely out of pocket
  • No baggage protection: lost, stolen, or delayed bags receive zero reimbursement
  • No travel accident insurance: no AD&D coverage on any common carrier
  • 3% foreign transaction fee makes the card expensive to use abroad even for minor purchases

No lost or stolen baggage coverage. This benefit was removed in September 2019. All costs for lost, stolen, or damaged checked or carry-on luggage are the cardholder's responsibility.

No travel accident insurance. This benefit was removed in September 2019. No accidental death or dismemberment coverage applies to common carrier travel with this card.

March 2025

Paid off $9,000 in 18 months interest-free

Transferred $9,000 in credit card debt from my Chase card. Made equal payments every month for 18 months. Zero interest the entire time. No late fee when I was a few days late once. This card did exactly what it advertised. Would recommend for anyone with a specific payoff goal.

November 2024

Balance transfer window closes fast — I paid the price

The 4-month window to initiate a transfer at the 3% fee is way too short and not clearly communicated. I initiated mine in month 5 and was charged 5% instead of 3%. On a $6,000 balance that was an extra $120 I did not need to pay. Read the fine print on the timing before you apply.

January 2025

APR jumped to 27% the day my intro period ended

Once the 0% period expired, my APR went to 26.99% overnight. I had a small remaining balance and woke up to a big interest charge. There is no grace period, no warning email, nothing. After the intro period this card has literally zero value — no rewards, no perks, no protection. Closed it the next month.

How to report unauthorized charges or identity theft on your Citi Simplicity card

1

Step 1: Report the unauthorized charge immediately

Call Citi Customer Service at 1-800-950-5114 (US) or collect at 1-605-335-2222 (international) as soon as you notice a charge you did not authorize. Citi's $0 liability policy means you will not be responsible for confirmed unauthorized transactions.

2

Step 2: Enroll in Mastercard ID Theft Protection

Visit cardbenefits.citi.com to enroll in free Mastercard ID Theft Protection. This activates identity monitoring on the data you choose to protect. You will receive alerts if suspicious activity is detected in your personal information.

3

Step 3: Document and follow up

For unauthorized charge disputes, Citi will investigate and typically resolve within 10 business days. Keep records of all communications. For identity theft beyond the card, Mastercard ID Theft Protection can provide guidance — but note that financial losses are not reimbursed by this program.

FAQ

What people ask about the Citi Simplicity®

  • The Citi Simplicity card's active benefits require no enrollment to take effect, with one exception. The $0 liability protection on unauthorized charges is automatic from the moment your account is open. Mastercard ID Theft Protection, the card's identity monitoring benefit, requires a one-time free enrollment at cardbenefits.citi.com. Once enrolled, monitoring begins immediately. There are no travel insurance benefits on this card, so no trip payment or common carrier requirement applies.
  • The $0 liability protection covers the primary cardholder and any authorized users on the account against unauthorized charges. Mastercard ID Theft Protection covers the enrolled individual's personal data: you enroll the specific information you want monitored (such as your Social Security number or email address), and alerts are sent to you directly. There is no travel insurance on this card, so there is no traveler coverage, dependent coverage, or companion coverage to speak of.
  • The Citi Simplicity card offers no rental car coverage of any kind. Worldwide Car Rental Insurance was removed from this card on September 22, 2019, along with all other travel and rental benefits. Declining the rental counter's collision damage waiver (CDW) while paying with this card provides zero coverage for vehicle damage or theft. Your only protection at the rental counter comes from your personal auto insurance policy or the rental company's own CDW, which you would need to purchase separately.
  • Call Citi Customer Service at 1-800-950-5114 (US, available 24/7) or collect at 1-605-335-2222 if you are calling from outside the US. Report the unauthorized charge as soon as you notice it. Citi's $0 liability policy means you are not responsible for confirmed fraudulent transactions. Citi typically investigates and resolves disputes within 10 business days. Keep a record of when you called and the reference number provided. For identity monitoring alerts, manage your enrollment directly at cardbenefits.citi.com.
  • The Citi Simplicity card does not cover trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, emergency medical expenses abroad, emergency evacuation, lost baggage, baggage delay, travel accident insurance, or rental car collision damage. Purchase protection, extended warranty, return protection, and price protection were also removed in September 2019. The Mastercard Standard tier does not include cell phone protection or any network-level travel benefits. The card is designed as a balance transfer tool, not a travel or purchase protection card.
  • No. The Citi Simplicity card provides no travel insurance of any kind, no rental car coverage, and no purchase protection. It also charges a 3% foreign transaction fee on every purchase made outside the US, making it costly to use abroad even for basic spending. If you plan to travel internationally, you will need a separate travel card with trip cancellation, emergency medical, and CDW coverage, or a standalone travel insurance policy. The Citi Simplicity's value is limited entirely to its 0% intro APR on balance transfers.
  • No. The Citi Simplicity card does not include cell phone protection. The Mastercard Standard tier does not carry this benefit at the network level, and Citi removed purchase protection from this card in September 2019. If your phone is stolen, damaged, or broken, no reimbursement is available through this card. A typical screen repair runs $150 to $400, and a full device replacement can cost $600 or more out of pocket. Cards at the Mastercard World Elite or Visa Signature tier often include cell phone protection when you pay your monthly wireless bill with the card.
  • The Citi Simplicity card's active benefits in 2026 are: $0 liability on unauthorized charges, free Mastercard ID Theft Protection (identity monitoring, enrollment required at cardbenefits.citi.com), Citi Entertainment presale access to concerts and sporting events, a free monthly FICO score, and a flexible payment due date. The card carries no annual fee and no late payment fee, which are its defining financial features. There is no travel insurance, no rental car coverage, and no purchase protection on this card.
