What does travel insurance cover?
What does travel insurance cover?
Travel insurance covers the big costs a trip abroad can throw at you: emergency medical treatment and repatriation, cancelling or cutting short your trip, lost, stolen or delayed baggage, missed departures, and personal liability if you injure someone or damage property. On the UK plans we compare, cover starts from £38.34 for eight days, with emergency medical limits from about £210,000 to £420,000 and repatriation paid at the actual cost.
The catch is that travel insurance is not one fixed product. Two policies at the same price can cover very different things: some include cancellation, some do not; some cap baggage at £210, others at £1,700. Cover is written per person and per trip, most sections carry an excess you pay on each claim, and the real limits sit in the policy wording, not the marketing. This guide gives you the full picture, guarantee by guarantee, with the actual figures from the plans available to UK travellers, so you buy on cover rather than on a headline price or a five-star badge.
Every year, our experts audit each plan against its binding policy wording: coverage, limits and exclusions, cross-checked with real customer feedback and live market prices. The analysis is fully independent, with zero paid placements and no insurer able to pay to influence a rating. We compare travel insurance across every country and currency, using the plans, prices and cover actually offered in your country, not a single guide translated.

Here is every core guarantee across the five plans UK travellers can buy, with the real limits in pounds and the one condition that decides each claim. A green badge means the guarantee is included, red means it is not, and orange means it is optional. "Actual cost" means the benefit is uncapped, and "Return ticket" means the insurer pays your fare home rather than a cash sum.

Repatriation and any major hospital treatment must be approved in advance by the insurer’s 24/7 assistance team. A transport home or an admission organised without their prior agreement may not be reimbursed, however high your medical limit is.
Cancellation pays only for named reasons, with an excess on each claim, and only from the policy start date, so buy at booking. Baggage carries single-article sub-limits, and theft must be reported to the police within 24 hours with a written report, or the claim is refused.
What medical cover does travel insurance include?
Emergency medical cover is the part you cannot travel without, because a single hospital stay abroad can cost more than a car. It pays for treatment, hospital stays, emergency dental work and, if needed, medically bringing you home. Across the five plans, emergency medical runs from about £210,000 on Go Explore to about £420,000 on Safe Start and Go Explore +, and repatriation is paid at the actual cost with no fixed cap. A detail most travellers miss: it is the insurer's 24/7 assistance team, not you, that authorises treatment and decides when to fly you home, so you must call them before you agree to anything major. Every plan here settles the hospital directly where it can, so you avoid advancing thousands of pounds and claiming them back, and search and rescue is covered up to about £4,200, which matters in the mountains or at sea.
- Emergency treatment and hospital care abroad : covered up to about £210,000 to £420,000 depending on the plan.
- Repatriation and medical transport home : paid at the actual cost, arranged and authorised by the 24/7 assistance line.
- No upfront payment : the assistance company settles the hospital directly, so you are not out of pocket.
- Emergency dental and teleconsultation : included on several plans for pain relief and minor problems abroad.
Does travel insurance cover cancellation?
Not always, and this is where UK travellers get caught out. Cancellation cover reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable trip if you have to call it off for a covered reason, such as serious illness, injury, a family bereavement, redundancy or jury service. But it is not on every policy: Go Explore and Go Explore + include none at all, Safe Start offers it only as an optional Cancel For Any Reason add-on (which does include Covid and usually refunds a share of the trip rather than all of it), World Travel covers up to about £1,300, and WorldSecure Platinum up to about £7,500, matched to your trip price. Three things decide whether you are really protected: the list of covered reasons, the excess deducted from each claim, and the date cover starts, because cancellation only protects you from the policy start date. Buy at booking, not at the airport.
- Cancel For Any Reason is rare : most plans pay only for a short list of named reasons, not a change of mind, and CFAR usually refunds a percentage, not the full trip.
- Entry-level plans may exclude cancellation : Go Explore and Go Explore + include none at all.
- An excess applies per person, per section : you pay the first part of most claims yourself.
- Cover starts only when you buy : cancellation protects you from the policy start date, so buying at booking is what makes it worth having.
Is lost or delayed luggage covered?
Baggage cover ranges from about £210 on Go Explore to about £1,700 on Safe Start and WorldSecure Platinum, but the total limit is only half the story. Every plan sets a single-article sub-limit, so one expensive camera or laptop is capped well below the headline figure, valuables such as jewellery and gadgets often share a combined limit of their own, and electronics cover is tighter still, at around £80 on the two plans that include it. Delayed-baggage and travel-delay benefits, from about £130 to £250, pay for essentials while you wait. To claim, you will need a property irregularity report from the airline (or a police report for theft, filed within 24 hours) plus original receipts, so keep them.
What else does travel insurance cover?
Beyond the core, a good policy adds curtailment, which reimburses the unused, prepaid part of your trip if you have to come home early for a covered reason, plus missed and delayed departures when a transport failure or extreme weather makes you miss the start of your trip. Personal liability, from about £1.3m up to £3.8m on the plans we compare, protects you if you injure someone or damage their property, permanent-disability cover pays a lump sum after a serious accident (from about £8,400 to £42,000 here), and legal expenses cover helps you pursue or defend a claim. Smaller benefits include emergency cash and stolen travel documents.
Activities are where cover is won or lost. Winter sports and cruises are usually optional add-ons rather than standard, and extreme or high-risk sports are excluded on most base plans, though WorldSecure Platinum includes them. Check the policy's activity list against your actual plans: skiing off-piste, scuba diving beyond a set depth, a moped hire or a cruise can each fall outside standard cover, and a claim from an uncovered activity will be refused however good the rest of the policy is.

Antoine's pick
If you want a policy that genuinely covers everything this guide describes, WorldSecure Platinum is the one I point most UK travellers to. For £47.10 on our example trip it is the only plan here that combines real cancellation cover (up to about £7,500), extreme sports, direct hospital billing and £3.8m of liability. If you are on a tight budget and mainly worried about medical bills, Safe Start at £38.34 gives you the highest medical limit and lets you add Cancel For Any Reason, including Covid.

What is not covered by travel insurance?
Every policy has a list of things it will not pay for, and claims are refused most often because a traveller missed one of them. You can still compare UK travel insurance plans on cover rather than price, but read the exclusions first.
- Undeclared pre-existing conditions : you must declare existing medical conditions, or related claims are refused.
- Extreme and high-risk sports : excluded on most base plans unless you add cover; WorldSecure Platinum includes them.
- Long-stay and expat medical care : these are travel plans, not health insurance for living abroad.
- Incidents under alcohol or drugs : claims linked to intoxication are not paid.
- Unattended or unreported belongings : luggage left unattended, or theft not reported to the police within 24 hours, is excluded.
- Travel against official advice : trips to a destination the UK government advises against are not covered.
- Known events : cancelling because of something you already knew about when you booked is excluded.
How much does travel insurance cost in the UK?
On our example trip, one traveller aged 40 for eight days in Spain, cover started at £38.34. What you pay depends most on four things: your age, the destination (the United States and Canada cost far more than Europe because healthcare there is so expensive), the length of the trip, and the level of cover. The table below shows how the cheapest available cover changes as those factors change, using real UK quotes.
Trip | Cheapest cover from | Best-value plan |
|---|---|---|
Europe, 1 week (age 40) | £38.34 | Safe Start |
Europe, 1 week (age 70) | £51.77 | World Travel |
Europe, 1 month (age 40) | £64.23 | Go Explore |
United States, 2 weeks (age 40) | £65.79 | WorldSecure Platinum |
Two rules keep the cost down without cutting the cover you need. If you travel more than twice a year, an annual multi-trip policy usually works out cheaper than buying single-trip cover each time. And buy at the time you book, not at the airport, so cancellation cover applies from day one. Buying the cheapest plan is a false economy if it leaves out the cover you actually need, so compare what each includes, not just the price.
Do I still need travel insurance with a GHIC or credit card?
A GHIC (the Global Health Insurance Card that replaced the EHIC) gives you access to state-provided medical care in the EU on the same terms as a local, but it is not travel insurance: it does not cover private treatment, repatriation home, cancellation or lost baggage, and it is no use outside the EU. Credit card and packaged bank account cover has similar gaps. Card travel cover, where it exists, typically comes with low medical limits, a short list of cancellation reasons, age caps and no repatriation, and it often only applies if you paid for the trip on that card. Treat a GHIC and any card cover as a useful top-up, not a substitute for a standalone travel insurance policy.
Common questions about what travel insurance covers
Yes. Emergency medical care is the core of every travel policy, covering treatment, hospital stays and repatriation. On the UK plans we compare, medical limits run from about £210,000 to £420,000, with repatriation paid at actual cost. Call the insurer’s assistance line before major treatment so it is authorised.
Only if the plan includes it. Some plans (Go Explore, Go Explore +) have no cancellation cover, others pay up to about £1,300 to £7,500, and Safe Start offers Cancel For Any Reason as an add-on. Always check the covered reasons and the excess.
Yes, up to a limit from about £210 to £1,700 on the plans we compare, with a single-article sub-limit that caps how much you get for one expensive item. Delayed-baggage cover pays for essentials while you wait.
Yes, on every plan we compare repatriation is paid at the actual cost, with no fixed cap. The insurer’s assistance team arranges and authorises the medical transport home, so always call them first.
Only if you declare them. Undeclared pre-existing conditions are one of the most common reasons a claim is refused, so tell the insurer about any existing condition before you buy.
It depends on the plan. Safe Start’s optional Cancel For Any Reason includes Covid, and medical cover generally treats Covid like any other illness abroad, but cancellation for Covid is not automatic on every policy.
Yes on plans that include missed departure and connection cover, when the cause is outside your control, such as a transport failure, an accident on the way or extreme weather. Leaving yourself too little time between connections is not covered.
Common exclusions are undeclared pre-existing conditions, extreme or high-risk sports on base plans, long-stay and expat medical care, incidents under alcohol or drugs, belongings left unattended, and travel against UK government advice.
As soon as you book. Medical cover only needs to be in place before you travel, but cancellation cover protects your deposit only from the policy start date, so buying early is what makes the cancellation part worth having.
No. A GHIC only covers state medical care in the EU, with no repatriation, cancellation or baggage cover, and no use outside the EU. It is a useful top-up, not a replacement for a policy.
Around £200,000 or more is comfortable for Europe, where our plans start at about £210,000. For the United States and Canada, aim for the higher tiers, as treatment and evacuation costs there are far higher.
