Do you really need worldwide travel insurance?

Yes: outside Europe the NHS cannot help you and the UK GHIC card loses its value, so worldwide travel insurance is essential. For UK residents, real prices start at £3.36 a day for cover excluding the USA, or £4.70 a day including it, with medical cover up to around £420,000.

Worldwide travel insurance is a policy valid in every destination, including the USA, Canada and the Caribbean where treatment costs the most. UK insurers sell it in two tiers, worldwide excluding those three zones and worldwide including them. It is the natural cover for round-the-world trips, multi-stop itineraries or a route you have not fixed yet.

As a policy analyst I look at two numbers first: the medical ceiling and the repatriation terms. For the USA, HelloSafe's risk data recommends around £840,000 of medical cover, and FCDO guidance notes that an illness treated in an American hospital with return to the UK can exceed £150,000. Post-Brexit small print matters too: only 5 of the 60 plans in our database accept UK residents.

If you want a broader comparison first, start with our guide to travel insurance; this page focuses on policies valid in every country and on real prices computed for the UK.

Our methodology

Every year, our experts audit each plan against its binding policy wording: coverage, limits and exclusions, cross-checked with real customer feedback and live market prices. The analysis is fully independent, with zero paid placements and no insurer able to pay to influence a rating. We compare travel insurance across every country and currency, using the plans, prices and cover actually offered in your country, not a single guide translated.

What is the best worldwide travel insurance for UK travellers?

The best worldwide travel insurance for UK travellers is WorldSecure Platinum: the cheapest quote in our USA comparison at £65.79 for 14 days, with cancellation up to ≈£7,500, baggage to ≈£1,700, extreme sports included, direct hospital billing and repatriation at actual cost.

Go Explore + suits travellers who want the highest medical ceiling: ≈£420,000, cover to age 80 and no medical excess on this top tier, at £98.72 for two weeks in the USA. Safe Start pairs the same ≈£420,000 ceiling with ≈£1,700 baggage cover and quarantine protection for trips up to six months, while Go Explore is the budget pick at £46.97 for a fortnight outside North America.

The view of Antoine Fruchard

For a trip that can touch any country, what you really buy is the ability to walk into any hospital, hand over your policy and be flown home if things go wrong, without advancing a penny. Every plan we shortlist for UK residents does exactly that, with direct billing and repatriation paid at actual cost. WorldSecure Platinum is my first pick because it adds real cancellation cover up to ≈£7,500 and still came out cheapest at £65.79 for two weeks in the USA; its limits are a 65-year age cap and a ≈£250,000 medical ceiling. If you are older or want double the medical cover, Go Explore + at £98.72 protects you to age 80 with ≈£420,000. Antoine Fruchard, Co-Founder & Travel Insurance Expert at HelloSafe

USA or not

Should you choose worldwide travel insurance including or excluding the USA?

Choose worldwide travel insurance including the USA only if your route touches the USA, Canada or the Caribbean: on the same plan, that tier costs 40% to 67% more. WorldSecure Platinum quotes £47.10 for 14 days worldwide excluding those zones, and £65.79 once the USA is included.

UK insurers split worldwide cover into two zones because North American healthcare is the most expensive on earth. The gap is measurable on identical cover: Go Explore costs £46.97 for a fortnight in Thailand or Australia and £78.60 for the same fortnight in the USA. If you add a stop in the excluded zone later, upgrade the policy before departure; the rule also catches cruise itineraries calling at Caribbean ports.

For everywhere else, from a beach holiday in Thailand to a loop through Asia and Oceania, the excluding tier is enough and prices start at £3.36 a day. Wherever you land, our USA risk data shows why the ceiling matters more than the price tag.

USA risk signal, updated 31 July 2026

HelloSafe’s live risk data currently flags a red medical signal for the USA (a measles outbreak straining local healthcare) and an orange climate signal (active wildfires disrupting flights and roads). Both argue for a high medical ceiling and cancellation cover on any itinerary that includes the USA.

One honest caveat: no plan currently sold to UK residents in our comparison reaches that ≈£840,000 medical floor. The strongest available combination is a ≈£420,000 ceiling with repatriation paid at actual cost and direct hospital billing, which is exactly what Go Explore + and Safe Start deliver.

Cover

What does worldwide travel insurance cover?

Worldwide travel insurance covers emergency medical costs and hospital stays abroad, repatriation to the UK, 24/7 assistance, baggage, personal liability and, on the most complete plans, trip cancellation. It protects you before, during and after departure, in any country your chosen tier includes.

Medical cover is the heart of the policy: it pays for consultations, admissions and surgery abroad up to the stated ceiling, and every plan in our UK shortlist bills the hospital directly so you never advance thousands of pounds yourself. Outside Europe, treat ≈£250,000 as the working minimum and aim for ≈£420,000 or more when North America is on the route.

Repatriation organises and pays for your medical return to the UK when local treatment is not enough. From long-haul destinations it is one of the most expensive services on the policy, which is why every shortlisted plan covers it at actual cost rather than up to a cap that might fall short.

Cancellation refunds your trip if a listed event stops you travelling, and baggage cover handles theft, loss or delayed delivery: see our guides to what travel insurance covers and baggage insurance for the detail behind each guarantee.

  • Medical ceiling of ≈£250,000 or more : the protection floor outside Europe; aim for ≈£420,000 or more when the USA, Canada or the Caribbean are on the route.
  • Repatriation at actual cost : a medical return from the other side of the world is among the most expensive claims of all.
  • Direct hospital billing : the insurer settles the hospital bill itself, so you never advance large sums; included across our UK shortlist.
  • 24/7 assistance : one number to organise care and decisions wherever you are, at any hour.
  • Personal liability to ≈£3,800,000 : the highest level in the plans we analysed, valuable in litigious countries.
Conditions

What are the conditions and exclusions of worldwide travel insurance?

Even worldwide travel insurance has limits: policies void cover in sanctioned territories and war zones, exclude pre-existing conditions on several plans, apply age caps between 39 and 84, and never apply in your own country of residence. Reading these clauses before departure is what prevents a refused claim.

Worldwide does not mean unconditional. The policy wording behind WorldSecure Platinum, for example, voids cover for activities in countries under UN or EU sanctions, restrictions or embargoes, excludes the consequences of war, civil war and riots, and does not apply at all in your country of residence. Competitive or professional sport needs a dedicated option.

Age matters too. WorldSecure Basic stops at 39, WorldSecure Platinum at 65, Safe Start at 69, Safe World at 79, Go Explore and Go Explore + at 80, and World Travel goes furthest at 84. The age filter is priced in: at 65, a week in the USA starts at £49.34 but the mid-market quote is £103.52.

The plans at the top of our comparison handle these conditions well. WorldSecure Platinum names its cancellation reasons explicitly, from serious illness and bereavement to pregnancy complications up to the 28th week and even an organ-transplant summons. Go Explore + charges no medical excess on its top tier, where the entry tier applies ≈£25 per condition.

  • Sanctioned countries and war zones : cover is void where UN or EU sanctions or embargoes apply, and consequences of war or riots are excluded.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions : the contract behind Go Explore and Go Explore + excludes them and their consequences outright.
  • Your country of residence : a worldwide policy protects you abroad, never for incidents at home in the UK.
  • Unlisted cancellation reasons : plans such as WorldSecure Platinum refund only the reasons named in the wording, so a change of mind is not covered.
  • Extreme and competitive sport : most plans exclude them by default; WorldSecure Platinum includes extreme sports, but competitions and professional practice still need the dedicated option.
Price

How much does worldwide travel insurance cost?

Worldwide travel insurance costs from £3.36 a day for UK travellers, which is £46.97 for a fortnight outside North America with Go Explore, rising to £4.70 a day, or £65.79, once the USA is included. Age, trip length and the zone tier you pick drive the final price.

The most complete plans for two weeks in the USA sit between £65.79 and £98.72, depending on whether you prioritise cancellation cover or the highest medical ceiling. The per-profile table above gives the detail; to see how these quotes sit in the wider market, browse the best travel insurance ranking or compare travel insurance for your exact trip.

GHIC & cards

Can the GHIC or your bank card replace worldwide travel insurance?

No: neither the GHIC nor a bank card replaces worldwide travel insurance. The UK Global Health Insurance Card only gives access to state healthcare in the EU at local terms, and NHS guidance is explicit that it covers no repatriation, no private care and nothing across most of the world.

The GHIC, successor to the EHIC for UK residents, is still worth carrying for the European legs of a trip: it entitles you to medically necessary treatment in state facilities at the price a local resident pays. It becomes irrelevant the moment you land in the USA, Asia, Oceania or almost anywhere else, and it never pays to fly you home.

Premium bank cards sometimes include travel medical or cancellation cover, but the limits are typically low, the trip usually has to be paid for with the card, and the ceilings rarely approach what treatment in the USA actually costs. Treat a card as a complement to worldwide travel insurance, never a substitute, and check its written terms before relying on it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about worldwide travel insurance

  • It is a policy valid in every destination, sold by UK insurers in two tiers: worldwide excluding the USA, Canada and the Caribbean, and worldwide including them. It covers emergency medical costs, repatriation, assistance, baggage and personal liability, and suits multi-stop or round-the-world trips.

  • It is the standard UK zone system: those three areas carry the highest medical costs, so insurers price them separately. In our comparison the same plan costs 40% to 67% more once the USA is included, for example £47.10 against £65.79 for WorldSecure Platinum over 14 days.

  • From £3.36 a day: £46.97 buys a fortnight outside North America with Go Explore, while two weeks in the USA start at £65.79. A family of four pays from £88.18 for a week, and an annual worldwide policy costs £234.83. Prices rise with age, duration and the including-USA tier.

  • Yes, if you pick the tier that includes the USA, Canada and the Caribbean. Check the medical ceiling before the price: our USA risk data recommends around £840,000, and the strongest plans open to UK residents reach ≈£420,000 with repatriation at actual cost and direct hospital billing.

  • Policy wordings void cover in territories under UN or EU sanctions or embargoes and exclude the consequences of war, civil war and riots. Your own country of residence is also outside the scope: a worldwide policy protects you abroad, not at home in the UK.

  • Yes, and it varies widely: WorldSecure Basic stops at 39, WorldSecure Platinum at 65, Safe Start at 69, Safe World at 79, Go Explore and Go Explore + at 80, and World Travel accepts travellers up to 84. Over 65 the choice narrows and the mid-market price roughly doubles.

  • Yes. A 30-day multi-region itinerary at age 25 costs from £52.72 with WorldSecure Basic, which accepts trips up to 364 days for under-40s. Safe Start covers stays up to 6 months with quarantine protection, and Go Explore + runs to a full year with cover to age 80.

  • Safe World, the one annual worldwide plan in our UK comparison, costs £234.83 a year with cancellation up to ≈£10,000 per trip and a ≈£420,000 medical ceiling. Against £65.79 for a single two-week USA trip, it pays for itself from about the fourth trip of the year.

  • No. The UK Global Health Insurance Card only covers medically necessary state healthcare in the EU at the same terms as residents. NHS guidance confirms it pays nothing towards repatriation, private treatment, cancellation or baggage, and it has no value across most of the world.

  • With direct billing the insurer settles the bill with the hospital itself, so you never advance the money. Every plan in our UK worldwide shortlist includes it. It matters most in the USA, where hospitals commonly ask for immediate payment or a guarantee before treating you.
