Ski travel insurance UK: compare cover and prices from £32.90 a week
- Mountain rescue
- On-piste accidents
- Equipment covered
Do you really need ski travel insurance for the slopes?
Ski travel insurance covers emergency medical care, mountain search and rescue and repatriation on a winter-sports trip, from £32.90 a week for a UK skier. Your GHIC pays for none of the rescue off the slope, which is where a ski accident gets expensive.
After eleven years reading policy wordings, the pattern at the ski resort never changes: the fall itself is cheap, the way you get off the mountain is not. Our GB comparison prices six plans a UK resident can actually buy for a week in the Alps, from £15.82 to £62.31. Only one of them, WorldSecure Platinum at £32.90, lets you add the winter-sports option that extends cover past the marked piste.
The number to look at is not the headline price but the search and rescue limit, which runs from about £2,500 to about £5,000 across those plans, and the exact sports clause in the policy wording. Skiing on an open, marked piste sits inside the standard cover on the plans we read. Off-piste, ski touring and ski jumping do not.
Ski cover is one part of a full travel insurance policy, alongside medical expenses, repatriation and cancellation. It is worth reading the whole contract rather than buying a bolt-on twice.
Every year, our experts audit each plan against its binding policy wording: coverage, limits and exclusions, cross-checked with real customer feedback and live market prices. The analysis is fully independent, with zero paid placements and no insurer able to pay to influence a rating. We compare travel insurance across every country and currency, using the plans, prices and cover actually offered in your country, not a single guide translated.
Learn moreWhich ski travel insurance is best for UK skiers?
The best ski travel insurance for most UK skiers is WorldSecure Platinum at £32.90 for a week in the French Alps, because it is the only plan in our GB comparison that accepts the winter-sports option, and it pairs that with about £250,000 of medical cover and about £4,200 of mountain search and rescue.
We ranked the six plans a UK resident can buy for that trip on cover against real price, with the winter-sports option requested. Safe Start is the value pick at £38.34 if you stay strictly on piste: about £420,000 of medical cover, about £3.8m of personal liability and about £1,700 of baggage. WorldSecure Basic is the cheapest at £15.82 but it stops at age 39 and drops the rescue limit to about £2,500.
Antoine's take
If you ski, the plan you want is the one that pays for getting you off the mountain and into a hospital without you advancing a penny. WorldSecure Platinum does that: about £4,200 towards mountain search and rescue, about £250,000 of medical care billed directly to the insurer, repatriation at actual cost, and it is the only plan on our GB shortlist where you can tick the winter-sports option, which is what buys back off-piste skiing. At £32.90 for a week in the Alps it costs less than a day’s lift pass. Stay on piste the whole week and Safe Start at £38.34 gives you a higher medical ceiling instead. One honest caveat: none of these plans refunds a lift pass, ski hire or lessons if the pistes close, and none of them offers the winter-sports option from age 65. How much does ski travel insurance cost?
Ski travel insurance costs from £15.82 for a week in the Alps, and £32.90 for the same week with the winter-sports option on, which works out at about £4.70 a day. Price is driven by your age, how long you ski for and how many of you are going, far more than by the resort.
The table below gives real quotes captured on the same trip for the traveller profiles that ski most: a solo skier, a couple, a family and a two-week stay. The budget column is the cheapest plan that matches the trip, the premium column is the plan carrying the winter-sports option. If you ski more than twice a season, price the annual version too: the same plan on a multi-trip basis comes to £986.95 a year.
Profile | Budget | Average | Premium | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Solo skier Aged 28, 7 days | £15.82 (WorldSecure Basic) | £42.66 | £32.90 (WorldSecure Platinum) | Rescue limit about £2,500 on the budget plan against about £4,200 |
Ski couple Aged 32 and 30, 7 days | £31.63 (WorldSecure Basic) | £83.40 | £65.79 (WorldSecure Platinum) | About £3.8m personal liability each, the cover for a collision on piste |
Ski family 2 adults, 2 children, 7 days | £63.26 (WorldSecure Basic) | £141.03 | £131.58 (WorldSecure Platinum) | About £250,000 medical cover per person, children priced individually |
Two-week ski trip Aged 28, 14 days | £28.28 (WorldSecure Basic) | £46.97 | £49.35 (WorldSecure Platinum) | Three weeks with the option costs £65.79 |
Skier aged 64 7 days | £32.90 (WorldSecure Platinum) | £51.76 | £32.90 (WorldSecure Platinum) | The winter-sports option is not offered from age 65 |
Those are the prices for the cover itself. Set them against the claim: the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office puts a broken leg abroad with hospital treatment and possible repatriation at £25,000 or more, and Association of British Insurers members paid out £472 million across more than 500,000 travel claims in 2024, with medical expenses alone averaging £1,528 a claim.
What does ski travel insurance cover on and off piste?
Ski travel insurance is a travel policy whose winter-sports cover pays for a skiing or snowboarding accident: emergency treatment abroad, mountain search and rescue, repatriation home and personal liability if you injure another skier. On the plans we read, skiing on a marked, open piste is inside the standard cover; going off piste is the part you have to buy.
That distinction is the single most misread line in the market. The policy wording behind Go Explore excludes "skiing, cross-country skiing, sledging and snowboarding when practised off-piste", and names ski jumping, bobsleigh and mountaineering among the dangerous sports it will not cover at all. The wording behind WorldSecure Platinum excludes off-piste sliding sports unless the Risk Sports option is taken at the time you buy, and does not list on-piste skiing as an exclusion anywhere.
Cover | Ski travel insurance |
|---|---|
Emergency medical care abroad Hospital, surgery, X-rays | Up to about £420,000 |
Repatriation Medical flight or transfer home | Actual cost |
Mountain search and rescue Getting you off the slope | Up to about £5,000 |
Personal liability Colliding with another skier | Up to about £3,800,000 |
Direct billing No money advanced at the hospital | Included on all six plans |
Off-piste skiing Outside the marked runs | Option required* |
Skis and snowboard in the hold | Option required* |
Lift pass, ski hire and lessons Refund if the pistes close | Not covered by any plan |
Two gaps are worth naming plainly. No plan available to a UK resident in our comparison refunds a lift pass, ski hire or lessons, whether the closure is weather or injury: the ski-pack benefit sold by UK specialists does not exist on these contracts. And skis and boards travel as sports equipment, not ordinary luggage, so they fall outside the standard baggage insurance limit unless the winter-sports option is on the policy.
Who pays for mountain rescue if ski travel insurance does not?
You do. If you have no ski travel insurance, the cost of getting you off the mountain and home falls on you: your GHIC does not pay for it, and neither does the NHS. That is the single reason a winter-sports policy earns its price.
The NHS states that a UK GHIC does not cover "ski or mountain rescue", medical repatriation, or treatment in a private facility, and that it "does not replace travel and medical insurance". The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office puts it in the same terms: the GHIC is not an alternative to insurance because it does not cover repatriation or "additional costs such as mountain rescue in ski resorts", and it warns that winter sports "are not usually included in standard policies". Carry both, and read the sports clause before you go.
On the plans we read, that rescue bill is what the search and rescue guarantee is for: up to about £5,000 on Go Explore +, about £4,200 on WorldSecure Platinum, Safe Start, Go Explore and World Travel, and about £2,500 on WorldSecure Basic. The WorldSecure Platinum wording pays "the cost of searching at sea or in the mountains following an event that puts your life at risk", and only where the bill comes from a duly authorised rescue company, so keep the paperwork the piste service gives you.
- Call the assistance line from the slope, before you agree to anything. The number is on your certificate and the line runs 24/7.
- Get written proof of the rescue from the piste service or the resort, showing what was done and who did it.
- Keep every invoice: rescue, helicopter, ambulance, hospital, scans and any medicine you pay for.
- Submit the medical claim within five working days. WorldSecure Platinum sets that deadline in its wording and warns that missing it can cost you the claim.
- Let the assistance team organise repatriation if you cannot fly home normally. They arrange and pay for it directly.
For a serious injury the repatriation is the biggest single item, and all six plans cover it at actual cost rather than a fixed sum, which matters when the flight home has to carry a medical escort. Skiing outside Europe changes the medical arithmetic again: North American resorts are the reason our travel insurance for the USA page exists.
What conditions and exclusions does ski travel insurance have?
The four clauses that decide whether a ski travel insurance claim pays are the off-piste rule, the sports equipment rule, the age limit and the claim deadline. All four sit in the policy wording rather than the sales page, and all four have caught real skiers out.
Read on the binding contracts, not the summary sheets: WorldSecure Platinum excludes off-piste sliding sports, mountaineering, bobsleigh, skeleton, competitive luge and combat sports unless the Risk Sports option is selected when you buy, and treats skis and boards as sports equipment excluded from baggage cover unless that same option is on. Its liability cover carries an excess of about £85 on damage to property. Go Explore takes a harder line: off-piste skiing, cross-country skiing, sledging and snowboarding are excluded outright, with no option to buy them back.
- Search and rescue limit : aim for about £4,200 or more, and treat about £2,500 as the floor for an Alpine week.
- The off-piste line in the wording : if you plan to leave the marked runs, only a plan offering the winter-sports option will follow you there.
- Your age on the policy : the winter-sports option is not offered from 65, and WorldSecure Basic closes at 39.
- Direct billing : all six plans pay the hospital directly, so you do not advance thousands at the desk.
- The claim deadline : five working days for medical costs, fifteen days after you return for travel claims.
- Piste closure : no plan refunds the lift pass, ski hire or lessons if the resort shuts.
- Racing and competition : any event organised by a federation is out, and no option buys it back.
- Ski jumping, bobsleigh and mountaineering : named as excluded dangerous sports in the wordings we read.
- Off-piste on a standard policy : covered only where the winter-sports option has been taken.
- Pre-existing conditions : an illness already diagnosed or treated before you leave is excluded.
One practical consequence: buy the cover when you book the trip, not the night before you fly. WorldSecure Platinum is also the only plan on our GB shortlist that carries trip cancellation, up to the trip price with a ceiling of about £7,500, and cancellation only works if the policy is in force before the reason for cancelling appears. If you want the full picture across every plan rather than the ski angle alone, compare travel insurance or read our best travel insurance ranking.
What do UK skiers ask about ski travel insurance?
No, ski travel insurance is not compulsory in the Alps, but rescue and hospital costs are charged to you and your GHIC does not cover them. Resorts sell a daily rescue card, which pays for the evacuation only, not for hospital care or repatriation home.
On the plans we read for UK residents, skiing on a marked, open piste is not listed as an exclusion, so a standard policy covers an on-piste accident. Off-piste skiing, ski touring, ski jumping and racing are excluded unless the policy offers a winter-sports option.
Ski travel insurance costs from £15.82 for a week in the French Alps, or £32.90 with the winter-sports option on, for a traveller aged 28 departing from the UK. A couple pays £65.79 and a family of four £131.58 with the option on.
No. The NHS states that a UK GHIC does not cover ski or mountain rescue, medical repatriation or private treatment, and that it does not replace travel insurance. It gives you state healthcare at local cost, nothing more.
Off-piste is excluded on a standard policy. On our GB shortlist only WorldSecure Platinum offers the winter-sports (Risk Sports) option that extends cover past the marked runs, and it must be selected when you buy, not added after an accident.
Skis and boards count as sports equipment, not ordinary luggage, so they fall outside standard baggage cover. On WorldSecure Platinum they are covered only where the winter-sports option has been taken when the policy was bought.
No plan available to UK residents in our comparison refunds a lift pass, ski hire or lessons if the resort closes. That ski-pack benefit is sold separately by UK winter-sports specialists and by some resort rescue cards.
Not with the winter-sports option: it is not offered from age 65 in our GB comparison. Travellers of 65 and over can still buy standard cover, from £38.34 a week at 65 and £51.76 at 70, which covers an on-piste accident.
Only if you travel a lot: the multi-trip version of WorldSecure Platinum with winter sports on comes to £986.95 a year against £32.90 for a single week. Two or three ski trips a year still cost less bought individually.
Call the 24/7 assistance line before agreeing to any transport, get written proof of the rescue from the piste service, keep every invoice, and file the medical claim within five working days. Missing that deadline can cost you the whole claim.
