No trip cancellation. This benefit is not included with this card. Prepaid flights, hotels and tours are not reimbursable if you cancel, and a non-refundable week in Tokyo for two commonly runs to several thousand dollars.
ANZ cashback credit card: does the CashBack Visa Platinum include travel insurance?

Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the ANZ CashBack Visa Platinum
Platinum in the name. No travel insurance behind it. So, you're in a clinic in Bali with a fever and the front desk wants payment before the doctor sees you. The CashBack Visa Platinum settles the bill with a 0% currency conversion charge and even earns cashback on it, but no insurer ever pays you back. Most people searching for ANZ CashBack Visa Platinum travel insurance assume the Platinum tier comes with the same cover as ANZ's Airpoints Platinum card. It doesn't: the ANZ Premium Card policy wording (the insurer's full policy document for a card's complimentary travel cover) names the Airpoints Visa Platinum as the only eligible card. So there is no overseas medical, cancellation, evacuation or luggage cover here, whatever share of the trip you charge to it. ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation) and the public health system don't pay for treatment overseas either, while a standalone New Zealand travel policy covers those risks with no condition on how you paid. If the card only earns cashback on groceries and fuel at home, the missing cover costs you nothing; if you travel overseas with it, buy a policy the day you book.
- 0% currency conversion charge on foreign currency transactions, online and overseas
- $1 cash back for every $120 spent on eligible purchases, with no cap on CashBack Rewards
- Up to 55 interest-free days on purchases when the balance is paid in full each month
- Visa Concierge service and Visa Offers and Perks come with the Platinum tier
- Platinum tier, no travel insurance: ANZ's card travel cover is reserved for the Airpoints Visa Platinum
- No overseas emergency medical cover: ACC stops at the border, so a hospital bill in Honolulu is yours to pay
- No trip cancellation: prepaid flights and hotels are lost if illness or a family emergency stops the trip
- No evacuation or repatriation: an air ambulance from Bali to New Zealand commonly costs six figures
- $80 annual fee, charged in full once a year, with no insurance benefit attached to it

$80 a year, $1 back per $120, no overseas fees
I use anz platinum cash back $80 and $1 back for every $120 spent and no overseas fees so I’m well ahead
u/lilxyz (r/PersonalFinanceNZ)
Travel insurance dropped after COVID
I have the anz cashback visa platinum card which used to offer travel insurance until COVID. It was great not having to buy separate travel insurance (esp for low risk travelling).

Card surcharges can eat the cashback
The 1/120 gets soaked up by the surcharge though so you have to be careful what you spend it on.
How to contact ANZ CashBack Visa Platinum assistance?
ANZ's card travel insurance covers the Airpoints Visa Platinum only, so no insurer, policy wording or 24/7 emergency medical line sits behind this card. The numbers below are ANZ's credit card lines. For medical, cancellation and baggage cover overseas, buy a standalone New Zealand travel policy and keep its emergency number with you.

Claims & pre-authorizations
Is there anything to claim on the CashBack Visa Platinum?
Step 1: Know there is no insurance claim to lodge
The ANZ CashBack Visa Platinum includes no complimentary travel, rental or purchase cover, despite the Platinum tier, so there is no insurer, no emergency assistance line and no claim form. A medical bill, a cancelled trip or a damaged hire car while travelling stays with you unless you hold your own policy.
Step 2: For a lost card or an account problem, contact ANZ
Cancel a lost or stolen card in the ANZ goMoney app under Cards, or in Internet Banking under Manage Cards, and order a replacement there. Card questions go to 0800 269 277, or +64 4 470 3142 from overseas. If a complaint stays unresolved with ANZ, the Banking Ombudsman Scheme reviews it free of charge.
Step 3: For real cover, buy a standalone travel policy before you leave
Take out a standalone travel insurance policy when you pay the first deposit, so cancellation cover starts straight away, and rely on your home contents policy for what you buy. Any claim then goes to that insurer, so keep its policy number and 24/7 emergency line with you on the trip.
What people ask about the ANZ CashBack Visa Platinum
- There is nothing to activate, because the ANZ CashBack Visa Platinum comes with no complimentary travel insurance. ANZ's card travel cover, the ANZ Premium Card Overseas Travel Insurance run by Allianz Partners, defines an eligible card as the Airpoints Visa Platinum, and on that card the cover switches on once at least half your prepaid travel costs go on it. Paying for flights, a hotel or a hire car with the CashBack Visa Platinum earns $1 back for every $120 of eligible spend, but it buys no overseas medical, cancellation or baggage cover at any spend level. There is no registration, no cover check and no policy wording for this card. If you are travelling, buy a standalone travel policy when you book.
- Nobody, because no complimentary insurance policy is attached to the ANZ CashBack Visa Platinum. The cardholder, a joint or additional cardholder, a partner and dependent children all travel without cover from this card, and nothing they buy with it is insured either. A joint or additional card costs $5 a year on this account, and it carries no insurance of its own. Since no policy exists, there is no list of covered persons to check before a trip. If your family is heading overseas, a standalone travel policy can usually name a partner and children on one policy, and your home contents insurance is the cover that responds to theft of things you bought.
- No. The ANZ CashBack Visa Platinum has no rental vehicle excess cover (the benefit that pays back what a hire company charges you after damage or theft), whether you hire overseas or rent a car or campervan in New Zealand. If the vehicle is damaged or stolen, the excess in your rental agreement is yours to pay in full, and hire companies commonly set it in the thousands of dollars. Paying a foreign hire company with this card avoids a currency conversion charge and earns cashback, yet neither reduces the excess. Before you collect the keys, take the hire company's excess reduction or buy a standalone rental excess policy, and confirm campervans are included if you need one.
- There is no insurance claim to make, because the ANZ CashBack Visa Platinum carries no complimentary travel, rental or purchase cover, so no insurer or claims administrator stands behind it. For a lost or stolen card, cancel it in the ANZ goMoney app under Cards or in Internet Banking under Manage Cards, or call ANZ's credit card team on 0800 269 277 (+64 4 470 3142 from overseas). If a complaint about the card itself stays unresolved with ANZ, you can take it to the Banking Ombudsman Scheme, a free independent service. For a hospital bill, a cancelled trip or lost luggage, you claim on your own standalone travel policy instead, so carry its policy number and emergency line with you.
- The ANZ CashBack Visa Platinum carries no complimentary insurance, so it covers none of the risks of a trip: no overseas medical, evacuation, cancellation, travel delay, luggage or personal liability cover, abroad or within New Zealand. There is no rental vehicle excess cover and no snow sports cover, and on the shopping side no purchase protection, extended warranty or mobile phone cover. The Platinum tier does not change any of this, since ANZ's travel insurance policy wording covers only the Airpoints Visa Platinum. ACC and the public health system don't pay for treatment overseas, so a few nights in a Honolulu hospital would land entirely on you. Pair the card with a standalone travel policy for any trip abroad.
- No. The ANZ CashBack Visa Platinum has no travel insurance at all, so there is no snow sports benefit to switch on, free or paid. A fall on a groomed run in Japan, a helicopter transfer off the mountain, the hospital bill that follows, a snapped board and an unused lift pass would all stay with you. ACC doesn't pay for treatment overseas, and a fracture treated in Japan quickly reaches five figures. What the card does offer is a 0% currency conversion charge on a lift pass bought in yen, plus cashback on it. For the cover itself, buy a standalone travel policy with its snow sports option before you fly, and read whether it reaches beyond marked ski-field boundaries.
- Yes, for every overseas trip. The ANZ CashBack Visa Platinum pays for the trip, earns cashback on it and adds no currency conversion charge, but it does not insure it: there is no overseas medical, cancellation, evacuation or luggage cover. That matters because ACC and New Zealand's public health system don't pay for treatment overseas, and an air ambulance from Bali to New Zealand commonly costs six figures. A standalone New Zealand travel policy fills those gaps with no condition on how you paid for the trip. Buy it when you pay the first deposit rather than the week you fly, so cancellation cover is already in place if something goes wrong before departure.
- No. ANZ's platinum credit card travel insurance, the ANZ Premium Card Overseas Travel Insurance issued by Allianz Partners and underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo, defines an ANZ Premium Card as an ANZ Airpoints Visa Platinum account, including its additional cards. The CashBack Visa Platinum shares the Platinum tier and the $8,000 minimum credit limit, but not the insurance, so charging a whole trip to it switches no cover on. ANZ's own overseas travel insurance page also names only the Airpoints Visa Platinum. If you want ANZ's card cover, that is the card that carries it, with its own conditions; if you keep the CashBack Visa Platinum, buy a standalone travel policy for each trip abroad.
- You earn $1 back for every $120 spent on eligible purchases, and there is no cap on the CashBack Rewards you can build up. Your CashBack year runs for 12 months from your first purchase, and the total is credited to the card account on the statement that follows that anniversary, so the reward lands once a year rather than monthly. Cash advances, cash substitutes such as travellers' cheques, gambling and business spending do not count. ANZ Loop can add extra cashback at participating partners on top. A card surcharge at the till can cancel out the return, so the rate works best where the shop adds no surcharge.
- No currency conversion charge applies: ANZ sets it at 0% on its personal credit cards, the CashBack Visa Platinum included, for foreign currency transactions online and overseas, converted at the rate Visa sets. That makes the card cheap to use in Tokyo or Honolulu, and eligible purchases there still earn cashback. Two caveats apply. A shop or ATM overseas may offer to charge you in New Zealand dollars at its own exchange rate, so choose the local currency to keep the 0% benefit, and an overseas ATM owner may add its own fee to a cash advance, which earns no cashback anyway. Fee-free spending is not cover, either: a medical bill or a cancelled trip abroad stays yours unless you hold a standalone policy.
