Our take on travel insurance for the Warehouse Money Warehouse Money Visa

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

The Warehouse Money Visa is no longer sold: it stopped working on 31 October 2021, its accounts moved to the Purple Visa Card, and Finance Now has since rebranded that card NOW Rewards Visa. No travel cover then, none now. So, you're in a clinic in Bali, the flights went on the Warehouse Money Visa, and the front desk wants to know who's paying: there was never any Warehouse Money Visa travel insurance, no policy wording (the insurer's full policy document for a card's travel cover) and no 24/7 emergency line to call. Most cardholders assume a credit card brings some cover with it, but ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation) and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas, so all 20 benefits in this table, from cancellation to lost luggage, sat with you. Standalone travel policies sold in New Zealand usually pay overseas medical bills with no dollar cap and refund a cancelled trip for a covered reason; this card did neither. If your old account now runs as a NOW Rewards Visa, nothing has changed on the insurance side, so buy travel insurance separately on the day you book.

What works on travel
  • No annual fee: the card cost $0 a year to hold, after a one-off $55 establishment fee
  • 5% off at The Warehouse, on top of items already on discount (exclusions applied)
  • No fee for an additional cardholder
Where travel breaks down
  • No longer sold: the card stopped working on 31 October 2021 and open accounts moved to the Purple Visa Card, now NOW Rewards Visa
  • No overseas medical cover: ACC and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas
  • No trip cancellation: a non-refundable booking paid with the card was never reimbursed if you cancelled
  • No insurer, no policy wording and no 24/7 emergency line to call from overseas
  • A 2.00% overseas currency conversion fee applied to every purchase made in a foreign currency

What does Warehouse Money Warehouse Money Visa Travel Insurance actually cover?

No trip cancellation cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Prepaid flights, hotels and tours are not reimbursable if you cancel, and a non-refundable week in Tokyo for two commonly runs to several thousand dollars.

No overseas medical cover. The card never had an emergency assistance line either. All medical costs overseas are the cardholder's responsibility, because ACC and the public health system don't pay for treatment overseas, and a few nights in a Honolulu hospital commonly run to six figures.

No evacuation or repatriation. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Evacuation and repatriation costs are entirely the cardholder's responsibility, and an air ambulance from Bali to New Zealand commonly costs six figures.

No emergency dental cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Emergency dental treatment overseas is out of pocket, because ACC and the public health system don't pay for treatment overseas.

No hospital cash allowance. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. No daily allowance is paid during a hospital stay overseas, so the incidental costs of an admission are yours to cover.

No additional expenses cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Extra accommodation and transport after a disruption, such as a cyclone closing Nadi airport, are the cardholder's responsibility.

No travel delay cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Meals, accommodation and transport during a long delay, such as an unplanned night in Honolulu, are the cardholder's responsibility.

No alternative transport cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. The cost of alternative transport to reach a prepaid cruise, tour or event on time is out of pocket.

No return home cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. The cost of flying home after a family emergency, and of resuming the trip afterwards, is out of pocket.

No luggage delay cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Clothes and toiletries bought while your bag is delayed, say on arrival in Rarotonga, are out of pocket.

No luggage cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Replacement costs for lost or stolen bags and belongings are the cardholder's responsibility.

No travel documents cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Replacing a lost passport or stolen cash overseas, including the extra travel to reach a consulate, is out of pocket.

No personal liability cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Legal liability for injuring someone or damaging property overseas is uninsured, and claims of this kind commonly reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.

No accidental death cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. No lump sum is paid to you or your estate if an accident on the trip causes death or permanent disablement.

No loss-of-income cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Injured in Bali and off work for 8 weeks on your return, you get no income replacement from this card, and ACC weekly compensation only applies to injuries ACC covers.

No domestic cancellation cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Prepaid domestic flights and accommodation, such as a Queenstown ski week, are not reimbursable if you cancel.

No domestic flight delay. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Meals and accommodation during a delayed or cancelled domestic flight are the cardholder's responsibility.

No domestic expenses cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Extra accommodation and transport after a disruption on a trip within New Zealand are out of pocket.

No domestic luggage cover. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Lost or stolen luggage on a trip within New Zealand is not reimbursable through this card.

No domestic luggage delay. This benefit is not included with the Warehouse Money Visa. Essentials bought while your bag is delayed on a domestic flight are out of pocket.

The benefits end and a $55 fee arrives

An important point to note is that the Warehouse Money Card benefits are being discontinued as at 1st March 2022 and being replaced with a card with a $55 annual fee and a comparatively miserly 1% reward. No longer worth having.

How to contact Warehouse Money Warehouse Money Visa assistance?

The Warehouse Money Visa was a store credit card, not an insurance product, and it stopped working on 31 October 2021. Accounts that stayed open moved to the Purple Visa Card, now NOW Rewards Visa, which has no travel cover either, so buy a standalone travel policy before you fly.

What to do if a trip paid with the Warehouse Money Visa goes wrong

1

Step 1: Claim on your own travel policy, not on the card

The Warehouse Money Visa never had an insurer, a claims team or a 24/7 emergency line, and the card is no longer sold. Medical bills, lost luggage and cancellations are claimed on a standalone travel policy, or on another credit card's complimentary cover if that card met its activation rule. Save that insurer's emergency number in your phone before you fly.

2

Step 2: Keep the paperwork your insurer will ask for

Keep itemised medical bills, the property irregularity report (the form you file with the airline before leaving the airport when a bag is lost or delayed), any police report and your booking receipts. A refund on a cancelled flight or hotel depends on the airline, hotel or agent's own terms, so keep their written replies too.

3

Step 3: Take a card account complaint to Finance Now, then the IFSO Scheme

For a dispute about the card account (not travel insurance), which now runs as NOW Rewards Visa, call 0800 801 808 or email info@NOWvisa.co.nz, and allow 20 business days for a reply. If it stays unresolved, the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme (IFSO Scheme), a free independent service, can review it: call 0800 888 202 or go to ifso.nz and quote SBS Money Limited FSP418487.

FAQ

What people ask about the Warehouse Money Warehouse Money Visa

  • You can't, because the Warehouse Money Visa never came with complimentary travel insurance, and the card is no longer sold. It was a store credit card issued by SBS Money Limited (trading as Warehouse Money), built around 5% off at The Warehouse and no annual fee, with no insurer, no policy wording (the insurer's full policy document for a card's travel cover) and no emergency line behind it. Charging flights or a hotel to it therefore switched nothing on, and there was no registration step or cover-check tool. The card stopped working on 31 October 2021, and its successor, now called NOW Rewards Visa, carries no travel cover either. If you hold a New Zealand credit card that does include cover, check its activation rule before you book: most ask for the prepaid travel costs to be charged to that card.
  • Nobody, because the Warehouse Money Visa carried no complimentary insurance of any kind. The main cardholder, an additional cardholder, a partner and any children travelling on a trip paid with the card were all uninsured, whatever the amount and wherever they went. The only insurance linked to the account was Warehouse Money Card Protect, optional paid credit card insurance underwritten by AIA New Zealand (formerly Sovereign), and it had nothing to do with travel. If several of you travel on one booking, a standalone couples or family travel policy is the way to cover everyone. The medical side matters most, because ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation) and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas, so a hospital bill in Honolulu lands on the traveller in full.
  • No. The Warehouse Money Visa never offered rental vehicle excess cover, for a hire overseas or for a car or campervan rented in New Zealand. The excess (the amount the rental company charges you after damage to or theft of the vehicle) was yours in full, and hire companies commonly set it in the thousands of dollars. Paying for the hire with the card did not change that, because no insurer and no damage waiver sat behind it, and NOW Rewards Visa, the card that eventually replaced it, adds no rental cover either. Two options close the gap: the rental company's own excess-reduction product, bought at the desk, or a standalone travel policy that includes rental vehicle excess cover, bought before you leave. Compare the two prices before you sign the rental agreement.
  • There is no Warehouse Money Visa insurance claim to make, because the card never carried travel insurance and no insurer stands behind it. For a medical bill, a lost bag or a cancelled trip, you claim on your own standalone travel policy, or on another credit card's complimentary cover if that card met its activation rule. A refund on a cancelled flight or hotel depends on the airline, hotel or agent's own terms. For a complaint about the card account itself, which now runs as NOW Rewards Visa, call 0800 801 808 or email info@NOWvisa.co.nz, and give Finance Now 20 business days to fix it. If it stays unresolved, the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme (IFSO Scheme), a free independent service, can review it on 0800 888 202: quote SBS Money Limited FSP418487.
  • Everything on the insurance side, because the Warehouse Money Visa was a store credit card rather than an insurance product. A trip paid with it had no overseas medical or evacuation cover, no cancellation, no luggage, delay or liability cover, no rental vehicle excess and no snow-sports cover, and goods bought with it had no purchase protection, extended warranty or mobile phone cover. Pre-existing medical conditions never came into it, since there was no policy to exclude them from. The costly misunderstanding is that a credit card always insures the trip it paid for. This one didn't, and ACC and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas. A standalone travel policy, bought when you book, closes the gap.
  • No. The Warehouse Money Visa is no longer sold. From 1 September 2021, SBS Money Limited, which issued it under the Warehouse Money name, began reissuing cardholders with a Purple Visa Card on the same account, and the red Warehouse Money card stopped working on 31 October 2021. The 5% discount at The Warehouse ended on 31 March 2022, and the Purple Visa rates and fees, including a $55 annual card fee, applied from each account's statement date in March 2022. Finance Now has since rebranded the Purple Visa Card as NOW Rewards Visa, which charges a $34 account fee every 6 months. None of these cards includes travel insurance, so buy a standalone policy for your next trip.
  • No. The Warehouse Money Visa had no snow-sports cover: no ski injury medical costs, no search and rescue, no cover for your own or hired ski gear, no refund of unused lift passes and no liability on the slopes. A ski week paid with the card was just as exposed as any other trip, and NOW Rewards Visa, the card that eventually replaced it, adds nothing here. Overseas, the medical side matters most, because ACC and the public health system pay nothing for treatment outside New Zealand, and a fracture treated in Japan quickly reaches five figures. Standalone travel policies sell snow sports as an add-on, so if skiing is on the plan, choose one with that add-on and check how it treats skiing outside marked ski-field boundaries.
  • Yes. The Warehouse Money Visa never insured a trip, and an account that stayed open now runs as NOW Rewards Visa, which has no travel cover either, so a separate travel policy is the only cover you have, unless another credit card's complimentary insurance applies. The biggest gap is medical: ACC and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas, and a few nights in a Honolulu hospital commonly run to six figures. Timing matters too. A policy bought on the day you pay the deposit covers cancellation reasons that come up later, while one bought the week you fly misses them. A standalone New Zealand policy also pays for delays and lost luggage, which this card never covered.
  • Warehouse Money no longer runs its own customer service: the brand was retired and warehousemoney.co.nz no longer loads. Former Warehouse Money Visa accounts are now handled as NOW Rewards Visa by Finance Now, part of the SBS Bank group. The card line is still 0800 801 808, the number Warehouse Money used, and you can also email info@NOWvisa.co.nz or send a Secure Mail through the eMoney portal. Include your full name and date of birth when you email, so the team can find your account. None of these contacts handles travel claims, because the card never had travel insurance. For an overseas emergency, call the insurer named in your own travel policy.
