Our take on travel insurance for the The Co-operative Bank Fair Rate Credit Card

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

$20 a year. No travel insurance. Here's what that means before you book. The Co-operative Bank's Fair Rate Credit Card is a Mastercard with one rate of 12.95% p.a. on purchases and cash advances and a 1.90% fee on overseas spending. So, you're in a clinic in Bali and the front desk asks who's paying: with this card, it's you, because there is no Co-operative Bank credit card travel insurance of any kind. Most cardholders assume a credit card that paid for the trip also insures it. This one doesn't: ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation) and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas, and neither does the card. Standalone travel insurance sold in New Zealand usually covers overseas medical with no dollar cap, so if you travel overseas, buy a policy before you leave; if the card stays in New Zealand, the missing cover costs you nothing.

What works on travel
  • $20 a year in account fees ($10 every six months), so the card costs little to keep
  • One rate of 12.95% p.a. on purchases and cash advances, with up to 55 days interest-free on purchases
  • 1.90% fee on overseas transactions, charged on the New Zealand dollar value of each one
  • Accepted wherever Mastercard is, with Apple Pay and Google Pay for contactless payments abroad
Where travel breaks down
  • No overseas medical cover: ACC and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas, so every hospital bill is yours
  • No trip cancellation, delay or luggage cover: prepaid flights and tours are lost if you have to cancel
  • No 24/7 emergency assistance line: the bank's overseas number handles lost or stolen cards only
  • A fee on every overseas cash withdrawal, and cash advances get no interest-free days

No insurance claim to make: what to do before you travel

1

Step 1: Buy a standalone travel policy before you leave New Zealand

No insurer stands behind this card, so there is nothing to claim through it. A standalone New Zealand travel policy, bought as soon as you book, is the cover that pays for overseas medical treatment, a cancelled trip or lost luggage. ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation) and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas.

2

Step 2: Save the bank's overseas card line before you fly

If the card is lost or stolen overseas, call The Co-operative Bank on +64 9 526 2426 (0800 554 554 from New Zealand). You can also block the card instantly in the mobile app or internet banking. This line deals with the card only, not with medical emergencies.

3

Step 3: Card disputes go to the bank, then the Banking Ombudsman Scheme

To dispute a transaction, call 0800 554 554: the bank charges $0 to handle it. If its internal complaints process does not resolve the issue, the Banking Ombudsman Scheme reviews it for free. A claim on your travel policy follows that insurer's own process and dispute scheme.

FAQ

What people ask about the The Co-operative Bank Fair Rate Credit Card

  • You can't, because there is nothing to activate. The Co-operative Bank Fair Rate Credit Card carries no complimentary travel insurance: the product page, the fees and rates brochure and the conditions of use name no insurer and no travel benefit. Paying for flights or a hotel with it does not switch any cover on, whatever share of the trip goes on the card. Some New Zealand credit cards insure a trip once you charge prepaid travel costs to them before departure, but this is not one of them. If you want cover for an overseas trip, buy a standalone travel policy before you leave New Zealand, and keep this card for what it does well: one 12.95% p.a. rate and a $20 yearly account fee.
  • Nobody, because the card comes with no complimentary insurance. That applies to the primary cardholder, to additional cardholders and to any partner or children travelling with you. The conditions of use let you add an additional cardholder aged 16 or over, and the account fee rises from $10 to $15 every six months when you do, but an extra card brings no insurance with it. Each traveller needs cover from a standalone travel policy, or from a family policy that names everyone travelling. When you buy it, check the age limits and declare any pre-existing medical condition (a condition you had symptoms of or treatment for before the trip), because an undeclared one is a common reason for a declined claim.
  • No. The card has no rental vehicle excess cover (the amount the hire company charges you after damage to or theft of the car), overseas or in New Zealand. If a hire car is scraped in Rarotonga or a campervan is damaged on the West Coast, the excess comes out of your own pocket, and the hire company will usually charge it to the card you hired with. The card has a $1,000 minimum credit limit, so a large bond can use up most of a low limit while you travel. To close the gap, buy the hire company's excess-reduction option or a standalone rental excess policy before you collect the keys, and check whether your travel policy already includes rental excess.
  • There is no insurance claim to make, because no insurer stands behind this card. What you can raise with The Co-operative Bank is a card problem: a lost or stolen card (0800 554 554 from New Zealand, +64 9 526 2426 from overseas) or a disputed transaction, which you report by calling 0800 554 554. The bank charges $0 to handle a disputed transaction. If its internal complaints process does not resolve the issue, you can take it to the Banking Ombudsman Scheme, a free independent service. For a medical bill or a cancelled trip overseas, the claim goes to the insurer of the standalone travel policy you bought, under that policy's own process and dispute scheme.
  • It does not cover anything on a trip, because it carries no complimentary insurance at all. There is no overseas medical or evacuation cover, no trip cancellation, no travel delay, no luggage or travel documents cover, no personal liability and no accidental death benefit. Trips within New Zealand, rental car excess and snow sports are not covered either, and there is no purchase protection, extended warranty or mobile phone cover. The gap that costs most is medical: ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation) and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas, so a hospital stay in Honolulu is billed to you in full. A standalone travel policy is the only way to cover those risks while you use this card.
  • No. The card has no snow-sports cover of any kind: no ski injury medical costs, no mountain search and rescue, no cover for your own or hired ski gear and no refund of an unused lift pass. A fall on a ski trip out of Tokyo, with an X-ray, a cast and two nights in hospital, would be billed to you in full, because ACC and the public health system do not pay for treatment overseas. Paying for the lift pass or the gear hire with the card changes nothing. If you're heading overseas for the snow, buy a travel policy with a snow-sports option before you go, and check that it covers the runs you plan to ski, since off-piste skiing is often excluded.
  • Yes, for any trip overseas. The card carries no travel insurance, so holding it or paying for the trip with it leaves you without overseas medical, cancellation or luggage cover. Standalone travel insurance sold in New Zealand usually covers overseas medical with no dollar cap and adds cancellation, delay and luggage benefits, so it fills every gap this card leaves. Buy it as soon as you book, since cancellation cover only protects you from the date the policy starts. For trips within New Zealand, ACC helps with the cost of treating an accidental injury, but a domestic policy can still pay for cancelled flights or lost luggage. Declare any pre-existing medical condition when you apply.
  • It's a Mastercard. The Co-operative Bank's only credit card today is the Fair Rate Credit Card, issued on the Mastercard network, so searches for a Co-operative Bank Visa usually lead to this card. It charges one rate of 12.95% p.a. on purchases and cash advances, 0% p.a. for 6 months on balance transfers, a $10 account fee every six months ($15 with additional cards) and a 1.90% fee on overseas transactions, with a $1,000 minimum limit and a $0 late payment fee. It works with Apple Pay and Google Pay and is accepted wherever Mastercard is. What it does not include is any travel insurance, so plan to buy cover separately before an overseas trip.
  • No. The card has no mobile phone cover, so a cracked screen or a stolen phone is not reimbursed, even if you bought the phone with the card. It also has no purchase protection, no extended warranty and no price guarantee. What the card does offer is security on the account itself: you can block the card instantly in the mobile app or internet banking, and Mastercard Zero Liability protection may cover unauthorised transactions. For the phone itself, check whether your contents insurance covers it away from home, or whether your mobile provider sells a device plan. The Consumer Guarantees Act still gives you rights if the phone turns out to be faulty.
