Our take on travel insurance for the Farmers Farmers Mastercard

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Farmers Club Points on every swipe. No travel insurance at all. Here's what that means before you book. So, you're in a clinic in Bali with a fever and the front desk wants payment up front: the Farmers Mastercard can pay that bill, but nothing on the card pays you back. Most people assume a Mastercard comes with some cover for overseas trips. This one doesn't, and ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation) and the public health system pay nothing for treatment outside New Zealand either. Short answer on Farmers Mastercard travel insurance: there is none, so overseas the card brings 1 Farmers Club Point per $10 spent and a 1.4% international transaction fee, nothing more. A standalone New Zealand travel policy usually covers overseas medical with no dollar cap, plus cancellation, delays and lost bags. If you travel overseas, buy that policy before you leave; if the card only ever sees the inside of a Farmers store, the missing cover will never cost you a cent.

What works on travel
  • 1 Farmers Club Point per $10 spent overseas: holiday spending still builds towards Farmers Club vouchers
  • Accepted wherever Mastercard is, with Apple Pay and contactless payments
  • Up to 4 additional cardholders at no extra cost, so a travelling partner can carry their own card
Where travel breaks down
  • No overseas medical cover: ACC and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas, so a hospital bill abroad is yours
  • No cancellation, delay or baggage cover: every prepaid cost and every lost bag is on you
  • 1.4% international transaction fee on overseas purchases, charged on the NZD converted value
  • $50 annual fee, billed as $25 every 6 months, with no travel benefit attached to it

No insurance claim on the Farmers Mastercard: what to do instead

1

Step 1: Buy a standalone travel policy before you leave New Zealand

The Farmers Mastercard has no complimentary travel insurance, so there is no policy to activate and no claims line to call. Buy a standalone travel policy before departure, and add snow sports or rental excess cover if your trip needs them. Save that insurer's 24/7 emergency number in your phone before you fly.

2

Step 2: Claim with your own travel insurer, not with Farmers Mastercard

If something goes wrong overseas, call your travel insurer's emergency line before treatment where you can, and keep itemised bills, receipts and any police or airline report. You can still pay with the Farmers Mastercard, but the claim goes to the insurer that sold you the policy.

3

Step 3: Card account problems go to humm, then to FSCL

For a problem with the card itself, contact the complaints team at Columbus Financial Services (humm group) through 0800 990 077 or in writing to Private Bag 94013, Auckland 2241. It aims to resolve complaints within 20 working days. If it can't, Financial Services Complaints Ltd (FSCL), a free independent dispute resolution scheme, can review the complaint.

FAQ

What people ask about the Farmers Farmers Mastercard

  • There is nothing to activate: the Farmers Mastercard does not come with complimentary travel insurance. Its benefits are Farmers Club Points (1 point for every $10 spent), up to 55 days interest free on purchases, Long Term Finance deals at Farmers and up to 4 additional cardholders at no extra cost. Paying for flights or accommodation with the card earns points, but it does not switch on any cover, because there is no policy wording (the insurer's full policy document) behind the card. If you are travelling overseas, buy a standalone travel policy before you leave New Zealand, since ACC and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas.
  • Nobody, because the Farmers Mastercard carries no complimentary insurance of any kind. That applies to the primary cardholder and to the up to 4 additional cardholders the account allows at no extra cost. Holding a Farmers Mastercard gives a spouse, partner or child travelling with you no medical, cancellation or baggage cover. If several of you are travelling, a standalone family or couple travel policy is the way to cover everyone, and it is worth checking that it includes every traveller's age and any planned activities, such as skiing or diving.
  • No, the Farmers Mastercard does not reimburse rental car excess, whether you hire overseas or in New Zealand. The excess is the amount the rental company charges you after damage to or theft of a hire car, and on this card it stays entirely with you. Paying the hire charge with the card earns Farmers Club Points (1 per $10), but it does not add any cover. Before you pick up the keys, choose between the hire company's excess-reduction option and a standalone rental excess policy, and compare the daily cost of the two on the length of your hire.
  • You can't make an insurance claim on the Farmers Mastercard, because the card has no complimentary insurance and no insurer behind it. If you bought a standalone travel policy, the claim goes to that insurer: call its emergency line before treatment where you can, and keep itemised bills, receipts and any police or airline report. For a problem with the card account itself, contact the issuer, Columbus Financial Services (humm group), on 0800 990 077. If its complaints team cannot resolve it within 20 working days, Financial Services Complaints Ltd (FSCL), a free independent dispute resolution scheme, can review the complaint.
  • The Farmers Mastercard carries no complimentary insurance, so it covers none of the situations a travel or purchase policy would. There is no overseas medical or evacuation cover, no trip cancellation, no travel delay or baggage cover, and no rental car excess. Skiing and snowboarding are not covered either, and there is no purchase protection, extended warranty or mobile phone cover at home. The gap that costs most is medical: ACC and the public health system pay nothing for treatment overseas, so a hospital stay in Honolulu is billed to you in full unless you bought a standalone travel policy before leaving.
  • No, the Farmers Mastercard has no snow sports cover, and there is no add-on to buy through the card. A ski injury overseas, a mountain rescue, lost or damaged skis and an unused lift pass are all out of pocket. ACC does not pay for an injury treated overseas, so a fracture on a ski field in Japan quickly reaches five figures. If you are planning a snow trip abroad, buy a standalone travel policy with its snow sports option before you go, and check that it covers the runs you plan to ski, because off-piste skiing is often excluded.
  • Yes, if you travel overseas you need separate travel insurance, because the Farmers Mastercard includes none. The card works abroad wherever Mastercard is accepted, and earns 1 Farmers Club Point per $10, but every overseas purchase carries a 1.4% international transaction fee and there is no cover for medical bills, cancellation, delays or lost luggage. A standalone New Zealand travel policy usually covers overseas medical with no dollar cap. Buy it as soon as you book, because cancellation cover only protects you from the date the policy starts.
  • The Farmers Mastercard replaced the Farmers Finance Card: in March 2019, Farmers announced it would turn its long-standing Farmers Finance Card into the new Farmers Mastercard. The change moved the store card onto the Mastercard network, so it now works wherever Mastercard is accepted, with Apple Pay, and earns 1 Farmers Club Point for every $10 spent. The card is run by humm group through Columbus Financial Services. What did not change is insurance: neither card came with complimentary travel cover, so overseas trips still need a standalone policy.
  • Every purchase made overseas, or online in a foreign currency, carries an international transaction fee of 1.4% of the New Zealand dollar converted value. Withdrawing cash from an ATM overseas costs a $3 fee, more at a teller, and cash advances are charged 29.50% p.a. interest, compared with 28.50% p.a. on purchases once an interest-free period ends. The account fee is $50 a year, charged as $25 every 6 months. None of these fees buys any travel insurance, so budget for a standalone policy on top.
