Our opinion on American Express Business Platinum Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Trip cancel strong. Zero medical abroad. Here is what that gap actually costs an international business traveler. The Amex Business Platinum delivers real pre-trip and in-trip protection: $10,000 per covered trip for cancellation, $10,000 per covered trip for interruption, $500 for delays over six hours, $3,000 in baggage insurance for lost bags, and $500,000 in accidental death coverage on common carrier trips. All three trip insurance benefits are underwritten by New Hampshire Insurance Company (AIG). The american express business platinum travel insurance coverage stops at the border when it matters most: the card includes zero emergency medical insurance and zero paid evacuation. The Premium Global Assist Hotline (1-800-228-6855, 24/7) coordinates assistance but does not pay a hospital bill or evacuation cost. A $35,000 ER stay in Germany or a $90,000 air ambulance from Southeast Asia both come back zero from this card. One gap most business travelers miss: trip benefits exclude expenses your employer would not authorize for reimbursement on a commercial card.

What works on travel
  • $10,000 trip cancellation per trip: 7 covered reasons including illness, severe weather, terrorism, and jury duty, with no deductible
  • $10,000 trip interruption per trip: reimburses forfeited prepaid costs plus economy-class fare home, same 7 covered reasons
  • $500 trip delay after 6 hours: covers meals, lodging, medication, toiletries, and personal items for 4 trigger reasons
  • $3,000 combined baggage insurance: lost, stolen, or damaged checked and carry-on bags through AMEX Assurance Company
  • $500,000 travel accident insurance: AD&D benefit on common carrier trips charged to the card
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical insurance abroad: all hospital, physician, and prescription costs are out of pocket
  • No emergency evacuation coverage: Premium Global Assist coordinates logistics but pays nothing
  • Commercial card exclusion: trip benefits may not apply to expenses your employer would not reimburse
  • Max 2 trip delay claims per 12 months: frequent travelers can exhaust this cap in a single bad quarter
  • Pre-existing conditions excluded with 60-day lookback

What does American Express Business Platinum Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

Coverage requires round-trip travel charged to the card. One-way tickets are explicitly excluded. The commercial card exclusion can disqualify expenses your company would have reimbursed anyway.

Deductible : No deductible

Full cost of Covered Trip charged to Eligible Card or combination with Amex Membership Rewards points Round-trip travel required Notify AIG within 60 days: 1-844-933-0648 or aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress Proof of Loss within 180 days

Trip Cancellation Insurance reimburses the nonrefundable amount paid to a Travel Supplier when a Covered Loss prevents departure, up to $10,000 per Covered Trip and $20,000 per Eligible Card per 12 consecutive months. Coverage is provided by New Hampshire Insurance Company (AIG). Seven events trigger coverage: Accidental Bodily Injury, loss of life, or Sickness of the Eligible Traveler, a Traveling Companion, or a Family Member; inclement weather preventing reasonable travel; change in military orders; Terrorist Action or hijacking; jury duty or court subpoena; dwelling made uninhabitable; or physician-ordered quarantine. Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is yours. A single ER stay in Japan or Western Europe typically runs $10,000 to $80,000. The $695 annual fee does not buy medical coverage.

No emergency medical insurance. The Premium Global Assist Hotline (1-800-228-6855, available 24/7 when more than 100 miles from home) coordinates emergency assistance and medical referrals, but does not pay any medical costs. All hospital, physician, prescription, and dental expenses incurred abroad are entirely the cardholder's financial responsibility.

What's not covered
  • No emergency medical insurance is included with this card
A medical air evacuation from Asia, Africa, or South America runs $80,000 to $250,000. The Premium Global Assist Hotline makes the calls. You front every dollar.

No emergency evacuation insurance. The Premium Global Assist Hotline can help coordinate and arrange emergency medical transportation, but it does not pay evacuation costs. Commercial medical air transport costs are entirely the cardholder's responsibility.

Trip delay paid $480 after O'Hare weather delay

Six-hour delay at O'Hare due to a storm. Filed online at aig.claimnotify.com with boarding passes and meal and hotel receipts. Got $480 reimbursed in about three weeks. Process was more straightforward than expected. The 6-hour threshold was met and the benefit paid. Keep your receipts from the moment the delay starts.

AIG claims process took 3 months for medical cancellation

Filed a medical cancellation claim and AIG required four separate rounds of documentation over nearly three months: doctor's note, hospital records, carrier cancellation policy, and card statement, each requested separately. Coverage ultimately paid out but the process is slow and document-heavy. Start the paperwork on day one and do not wait.

Same insurance limits as the personal Platinum

Expected higher insurance limits given the $695 annual fee. The Business Platinum has identical travel insurance to the personal Platinum. The trip cancellation at $10,000, the $500 delay benefit, same covered reasons. The real value is in the lounge access and business credits, not the insurance stack.

How to file a Business Platinum card claim

1

Step 1: Notify within 60 days of the loss

For trip cancellation, interruption, or delay claims: call AIG at 1-844-933-0648 or visit aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress within 60 days of the Covered Loss. For CDW, purchase protection, extended warranty, or baggage claims: visit americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits or call 1-800-338-1670 within 30 days of the loss.

2

Step 2: Gather required documentation

For trip cancellation or interruption: collect Common Carrier tickets and Travel Supplier receipts, your card billing statement, proof of the Covered Loss (physician orders, court subpoena, military orders, or carrier documentation), and the Travel Supplier's cancellation policy. For trip delay: include a carrier statement confirming the delay, charge receipt, and receipts for all expenses. For CDW: gather the rental agreement and itemized repair bill. For baggage: file a Property Irregularity Report with the airline at the time of loss.

3

Step 3: Submit proof of loss within 180 days

For trip benefits, written Proof of Loss must be furnished to AIG within 180 days of the Covered Loss. For CDW, submit within 60 days. Some cardholders report trip delay approvals in 3-6 weeks. Medical cancellation claims typically take 6-12 weeks and may require multiple document rounds. File the day the loss occurs, not the day you return.

FAQ

What people ask about the American Express Business Platinum

  • Trip Cancellation, Interruption, and Delay Insurance activate automatically when you charge the full cost of a Covered Trip to your American Express Business Platinum card. No enrollment or registration is required. For Trip Cancellation, coverage begins on the purchase date of the trip. For Trip Delay, coverage applies once your trip is delayed more than six hours due to a covered reason. For Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance, decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter and charge the full rental to the card. For Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty, the item must be purchased with the card.
  • For Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance, covered persons include the Card Member, their Family Members (spouse, Domestic Partner, or dependent children up to age 19, or age 26 if full-time students), and Traveling Companions who purchased the Covered Trip to the Eligible Card. For Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance, coverage extends to the Card Member, their spouse or Domestic Partner, and Authorized Drivers listed on the Rental Agreement. The Premium Global Assist Hotline is available to the Card Member and their family when more than 100 miles from home.
  • The Business Platinum card includes secondary Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance through AMEX Assurance Company, covering collision damage and theft up to $50,000 per rental agreement. Secondary means your personal auto insurance or company fleet policy pays first, and the card covers remaining eligible costs up to $50,000. To activate: decline the rental company's collision damage waiver at the counter and charge the full rental to the card. Rental periods must not exceed 30 consecutive days. Coverage excludes Australia, Italy, and New Zealand. No liability coverage is included. File claims at americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits within 30 days.
  • For Trip Cancellation, Interruption, and Delay claims, contact AIG within 60 days of the Covered Loss: call 1-844-933-0648 or file online at aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress. Written Proof of Loss must be submitted within 180 days. For CDW, baggage, purchase protection, or extended warranty claims, visit americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits or call 1-800-338-1670. Notify CDW claims within 30 days. Some cardholders report trip delay approvals in three to four weeks. Medical cancellation claims typically require six weeks or more.
  • The most significant gaps are emergency medical expenses abroad and emergency evacuation: both are entirely uncovered. The Premium Global Assist Hotline coordinates assistance but pays nothing. Additional exclusions include: pre-existing conditions with symptoms or treatment in the 60 days before your trip purchase; one-way travel without a return destination; financial insolvency of a travel supplier; war; intentional acts; commercial card expenses your employer would not authorize; and known events publicized before departure. For rental coverage, Australia, Italy, and New Zealand are excluded, along with peer-to-peer rentals.
  • No. The Business Platinum includes no emergency medical insurance of any kind. The Premium Global Assist Hotline (1-800-228-6855, 24/7, or collect +1-715-343-7977 internationally) provides emergency coordination and referrals but does not pay any medical expenses. Every hospital bill, physician fee, and prescription cost incurred abroad is entirely the cardholder's responsibility. Annual international travel insurance policies with $100,000 or more in emergency medical coverage typically start at $200 to $400 per year.
  • Yes. Both Trip Cancellation and Trip Delay Insurance exclude expenses that are not authorized and reimbursable by your employer when you use a commercial card. This clause prevents double recovery: if your company would reimburse a cancelled business trip, the card benefit should not also pay the same expense. Out-of-pocket personal costs on business trips remain eligible. Document which expenses were personal out-of-pocket versus employer-reimbursable when filing any claim.
  • Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance excludes any condition that first manifested symptoms, required diagnosis, care, treatment, or prescription medication within the 60-day period before the purchase date of the Covered Trip. A condition that was stable and required no new treatment or medication change in the 60 days before you bought the trip is generally not pre-existing. There is no waiver available. The 60-day window is consistent with Amex's standard across its travel insurance policies.
  • The American Express Baggage Insurance Plan covers lost, stolen, or damaged checked and carry-on baggage on Common Carrier trips charged to the Business Platinum card, through AMEX Assurance Company. Coverage is up to $3,000 combined per covered person, with up to $2,000 for checked baggage. High-value items including cameras, jewelry, and electronics carry a $500 per-item sub-limit. File a Property Irregularity Report with the airline at time of loss and contact American Express Benefits at 1-800-333-2639. Baggage delay is not included.
  • No. Cell phone protection is not included with the American Express Business Platinum card. Theft, accidental screen damage, water damage, and hardware failure of a cell phone are not covered by any card benefit, regardless of whether the monthly phone bill is paid with the card. Replacing a flagship smartphone out of pocket typically runs $800 to $1,300.
  • The Business Platinum covers seven Covered Loss events: Accidental Bodily Injury, loss of life, or Sickness of you, a Traveling Companion, or a Family Member; inclement weather preventing reasonable travel; a change in military orders; Terrorist Action or hijacking; jury duty or a court subpoena that cannot be postponed; dwelling made uninhabitable; and a physician-ordered quarantine. Coverage is up to $10,000 per Covered Trip with no deductible. Job loss, supplier default, and financial reasons are not covered.
  • Not for the insurance alone. The $695 annual fee is justified by the credit stack (Dell, Adobe, Indeed, lounge access, and others) that can exceed the fee in value for qualifying businesses, not by the insurance benefits. The trip cancellation, trip delay, and baggage benefits match the personal Platinum dollar-for-dollar at the same fee. The absence of emergency medical coverage abroad is the defining insurance gap. Frequent international business travelers should supplement with a standalone international medical policy.
