Delay only. No cancel, no medical. Here's what that thin layer means in practice for a $325 annual fee card. Your flight gets delayed 11.5 hours. The Gold card does not cover it. The amex gold travel insurance is limited to one benefit: trip delay reimbursement up to $300, triggered only after a full 12 hours from your scheduled departure. Most cardholders assume a $325 annual fee includes trip cancellation and emergency medical. It does not. No trip cancellation. No trip interruption. No emergency medical abroad. A $3,500 trip cancelled for illness, a family emergency, or a job loss receives $0 from this card. Standalone travel insurance that covers cancellation, interruption, and emergency medical starts at $100 per person for a domestic trip. If you fly internationally without separate coverage, this card leaves every major travel risk unaddressed.

Emergency medical coverage abroad is not included with the American Express Gold Card. The Global Assist Hotline (standard tier) provides referrals and coordination services, but does not provide medical payment or reimbursement.
Emergency medical evacuation is not included with the American Express Gold Card. Global Assist can coordinate logistics but all transportation costs are the cardholder's responsibility.
Trip interruption is not included with the American Express Gold Card. Non-refundable costs from a trip cut short are entirely the cardholder's responsibility.

Trip Delay Insurance reimburses reasonable additional expenses, including meals, lodging, toiletries, medication, and other personal use items, when a Covered Trip is delayed more than 12 hours due to a Covered Loss. Coverage is limited to $300 per Covered Trip, with a maximum of 2 claims per Eligible Card per 12-month period. Coverage is secondary.

How to file an Amex Gold card claim
Step 1: Notify AIG for trip delay
Call 1-844-933-0648 or file at aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress within 60 days of the covered loss. Submit written proof of loss within 180 days. Required documents: airline delay confirmation, carrier tickets, card charge receipt, and itemized expense receipts.
Step 2: File purchase and CDW claims with Amex
Visit americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits or call 1-800-228-6855. For purchase protection theft claims, have a police report ready. For extended warranty claims, have original purchase receipt and manufacturer's warranty documentation. For CDW claims, include the rental agreement and damage report.
Step 3: Gather your documentation
Keep all receipts and original purchase documents. File the day the incident happens, not when you return home. For baggage claims, file a Property Irregularity Report with the carrier before leaving the airport.
Step 4: Track your claim
Trip delay claims: notify within 60 days, proof within 180 days. CDW: report promptly. Purchase protection: notify as soon as possible. Amex processes straightforward purchase claims in 2 to 3 weeks. Keep copies of all submitted documents.
