Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the American Express Gold
Delay only. No cancel, no medical. Here's what that thin layer means in practice for a $325 annual fee card. Your flight gets delayed 11.5 hours. The Gold card does not cover it. The amex gold travel insurance is limited to one benefit: trip delay reimbursement up to $300, triggered only after a full 12 hours from your scheduled departure. Most cardholders assume a $325 annual fee includes trip cancellation and emergency medical. It does not. No trip cancellation. No trip interruption. No emergency medical abroad. A $3,500 trip cancelled for illness, a family emergency, or a job loss receives $0 from this card. Standalone travel insurance that covers cancellation, interruption, and emergency medical starts at $100 per person for a domestic trip. If you fly internationally without separate coverage, this card leaves every major travel risk unaddressed.
- $300 trip delay reimbursement: covers meals, lodging, toiletries, and other essentials when your flight is delayed 12+ hours by weather, equipment failure, terrorism, or lost travel documents.
- Covers traveling companions: your spouse, domestic partner, dependent children, and traveling companions booked on the same trip are all included under the same benefit.
- 2 claims per 12 months: the annual limit resets each year, keeping back-to-back travel years eligible.
- 12-hour delay trigger: more than double the 6-hour threshold on many premium travel cards. A flight delayed 11.5 hours qualifies for nothing.
- $300 per-trip cap: covers one hotel night and dinner. A real 14-hour delay at a major hub easily runs $400-$600 in out-of-pocket expenses.
- No trip cancellation: a $3,500 trip cancelled for illness, job loss, or a family emergency receives $0. The Gold card has no cancellation benefit at all.
- No emergency medical abroad: no hospital fee coverage, no medical evacuation, no repatriation. The gap for international travel is total.
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

What cardholders say about the American Express Gold
r/amex
Purchase protection is top tier
The purchase protection on the Gold card is genuinely great: filed a claim for a stolen camera ($900), approved within 3 weeks. No travel insurance but for purchases it's top tier.
NerdWallet reader comment
Trip delay claim straightforward
Had a 14-hour flight delay, submitted meal and hotel receipts for the $300 trip delay benefit, straightforward process, reimbursed in about 5 weeks.
r/amex
No trip cancellation, used wrong card
No trip cancellation at all on the Gold. Had to cancel a $3,500 trip due to a family emergency and got nothing from Amex. Should have used my Platinum for the booking.
r/creditcards
11.5 hours didn't qualify
The 12-hour delay threshold is frustrating, my flight was delayed 11.5 hours and I didn't qualify. The Platinum's 6-hour rule would have covered it.

Step 4: Track your claim
Trip delay claims: notify within 60 days, proof within 180 days. CDW: report promptly. Purchase protection: notify as soon as possible. Amex processes straightforward purchase claims in 2 to 3 weeks. Keep copies of all submitted documents.
What people ask about the American Express Gold
- Most American Express Gold Card travel benefits activate automatically when you charge your travel to the card. For trip delay coverage, the full cost of your Common Carrier ticket (flight, train, or cruise) must be charged to your Gold card. Rental car CDW activates when you charge the full rental to the card and decline the rental agency's collision damage waiver at the counter. Purchase protection and extended warranty apply automatically to items purchased with the card. No pre-registration is required.
- Trip delay coverage extends to the primary cardholder, their spouse or domestic partner, dependent children under age 19 (or under 26 if enrolled full-time at an accredited college), and traveling companions who are booked on the same Covered Trip. Purchase protection and extended warranty apply to the primary cardholder's purchases. Rental car CDW covers the primary cardholder when the rental is charged to the card and registered in their name.
- The American Express Gold Card offers secondary CDW (collision damage waiver) coverage, not primary. Secondary means your personal auto insurance pays first in a rental collision or theft scenario, and the Gold card covers the remaining costs up to $50,000. To use the benefit, decline the rental company's CDW at the counter and charge the full rental to your card. If you carry personal auto insurance, secondary coverage still provides full protection in most cases. If you don't carry personal auto insurance, the coverage may not respond as expected.
- For trip delay claims, notify AIG within 60 days of the covered loss by calling 1-844-933-0648 or filing online at aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress. You must furnish written proof of loss within 180 days of the incident. Required documents typically include a statement from the airline confirming the delay and its cause, copies of your Common Carrier tickets, your card charge receipt, and itemized receipts for all claimed expenses. For purchase protection and extended warranty claims, visit americanexpress.com/benefits/travel or call 1-800-228-6855. File the day the incident occurs. Do not wait until you return home.
- The American Express Gold Card does not include trip cancellation, trip interruption, or emergency medical coverage abroad. There is no reimbursement if you must cancel a trip before departure for illness, job loss, or a family emergency. There is no payment for hospital bills incurred outside the United States. The trip delay benefit requires a full 12-hour delay and covers a maximum of $300 per trip. Rental car CDW excludes exotic vehicles, motorcycles, and rentals in several countries including Ireland, Israel, and Jamaica. Purchase protection excludes mysterious disappearance and normal wear and tear.
- Your trip must be delayed more than 12 consecutive hours from your scheduled departure for the trip delay benefit to activate. The 12-hour threshold is strict. A flight delayed 11.5 hours does not qualify. The delay must be caused by one of four specific reasons: inclement weather, terrorist action or hijacking, equipment failure by the Common Carrier, or lost or stolen travel documents. Once the 12-hour threshold is met, the card reimburses reasonable expenses up to $300 per Covered Trip, covering meals, lodging, toiletries, and medication.
- Yes. The American Express Gold Card includes purchase protection covering new items bought with the card against accidental damage, theft, and loss for 90 days from the purchase date. The maximum benefit is $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per year. To file, contact Amex at americanexpress.com/benefits/travel or 1-800-228-6855. For theft claims, a police report is generally required. Keep your purchase receipts. Amex processes smaller claims quickly, with some approvals in under two weeks.
- Yes. The American Express Gold Card adds one full year to the original manufacturer warranty on eligible purchases, up to $10,000 per item. Coverage applies to items with an original warranty of 5 years or less, purchased entirely with the Gold card in the United States. To file a warranty claim, contact Amex through americanexpress.com/benefits/travel. You'll need the original purchase receipt and documentation of the manufacturer's original warranty. There is no need to register the item in advance.
- No. Cell phone protection is not included with the American Express Gold Card. If your phone screen cracks, is stolen, or suffers a mechanical failure, the card does not cover the repair or replacement cost. Screen repairs on modern smartphones typically run $300 to $500. Mechanical failures outside the manufacturer warranty are also not covered. If cell phone protection is important to you, consider a standalone cell phone insurance plan or a card that includes this benefit.
- The American Express Gold Card includes limited travel coverage: trip delay insurance up to $300 when a flight is delayed more than 12 hours, and lost or damaged luggage coverage up to $1,250 for carry-on bags and $500 for checked bags. It does not include trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical coverage abroad, or emergency evacuation. For travelers booking international trips or expensive vacations, the amex gold travel insurance benefits are not sufficient as standalone coverage. A dedicated travel insurance policy is recommended for any trip where cancellation risk or medical risk is a concern.
