Our opinion on American Express Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Travel Insurance

Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Delay $300. No cancel, no medical. Here's what that means for a Delta business traveler. The American Express Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Card is built for businesses with teams that fly Delta regularly. The free checked bags, companion certificate, and Medallion Qualification Dollar accelerator are where the $350 annual fee pays for itself. The travel insurance layer is thin. Trip Delay Reimbursement covers up to $300 for meals and lodging when a Delta or other Common Carrier flight is delayed 12 or more hours. The 12-hour threshold is difficult to trigger on most routes. Delta resolves the majority of weather delays under 10 hours domestically. The benefit is further limited to 2 claims per 12 consecutive months. Lost Baggage covers up to $1,250 for carry-on bags and $500 for checked bags when the carrier loses, steals, or damages them (secondary to the airline's settlement). There is no trip cancellation, no trip interruption, no emergency medical coverage abroad, and no evacuation assistance. Business travelers who book non-refundable group fares or travel internationally should carry a standalone travel policy. File trip delay claims at aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress within 60 days. For lost luggage, file with AMEX Assurance Company within 30 days.

What works on travel
  • Trip Delay Reimbursement: up to $300 for meals and lodging after a 12-hour delay on a Common Carrier fare charged to the card
  • Lost Luggage: up to $1,250 for carry-on bags and $500 for checked bags lost or damaged by the carrier, secondary to airline settlement
  • Global Assist Hotline: 24/7 referral and coordination at 1-800-228-6855
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation: prepaid Delta group fares and conference bookings canceled for illness or project cancellation are unprotected
  • No trip interruption: no reimbursement if a business trip must be cut short
  • No emergency medical coverage: all hospital and physician costs abroad are the cardholder's full responsibility
  • No evacuation coverage: coordination only, all transport costs fall on the cardholder
  • 12-hour delay threshold: most domestic Delta delays do not reach this trigger
  • Capped at 2 claims per 12 months: business travelers who fly frequently can exhaust this limit early
  • Lost luggage is secondary: Delta pays out first, card covers only the remaining gap

Cardholder reviews

What cardholders say about the American Express Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business

RB

2024

Free bags pay for the annual fee

The free checked bags for the whole team is what makes this card worth it for our company. We put 6 people on Delta flights every month: the bag savings alone cover the annual fee many times over. The trip delay benefit is a nice extra.

2024

Trip delay reimbursement worked

Trip delay benefit triggered after a 13-hour weather delay in Atlanta. Filed through the AIG portal within 60 days, submitted hotel and dinner receipts plus the carrier delay statement. Received $300 about 3 weeks later.

RA

2024

No trip cancellation is a real gap

$350 a year and no trip cancellation. Our company had to cancel $6,000 in prepaid airfare for a client project that fell through: zero coverage. That one missed reimbursement would have paid for multiple years of a higher-tier card.

12-hour threshold rarely triggers

The 12-hour delay threshold rarely triggers on Delta flights. Most weather delays clear before then. If you travel for work regularly, you need a card with a 6-hour threshold to actually benefit from trip delay coverage.

How to file a claim

1

File trip delay on the day of the incident

For trip delay, file at aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress or call AIG at 1-844-933-0648. The 60-day deadline runs from the date of the delay, not from your return date.

2

Report lost bags to Delta at the airport

For lost luggage, report the loss to Delta's baggage service office before leaving the airport and obtain a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). Then file with AMEX Assurance Company within 30 days.

3

Collect your documentation

Gather your card billing statement showing the Delta charge, carrier delay confirmation or PIR, itemized list of lost items with original purchase values, receipts for claimed delay expenses, and police report for theft claims.

4

Submit within the filing window

Trip Delay: 60 days from the delay. Lost Luggage: 30 days. Purchase Security: 60 days from the incident. CDW: 30 days from the rental incident. Submissions past the deadline will be denied.

FAQ

What people ask about the American Express Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business

  • Travel insurance benefits on the American Express Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Card activate automatically when you charge a Common Carrier fare to the card. No pre-registration is required. For Trip Delay, the delay must reach 12 hours. For Lost Luggage, the bags must be in the carrier's care and the fare must be charged to the card. For rental car CDW, actively decline the rental company's CDW at the counter and charge the full rental to the card. For Purchase Security, simply buy the item with the card.
  • The primary cardholder and additional cardholders on the account are covered under travel and purchase protection benefits. Family members traveling on the same itinerary may be covered under certain travel benefits. Refer to the benefit guide for specific definitions. For the complimentary checked bag benefit, up to 8 companions on the same reservation as the cardholder receive the free bag perk (up to 3 free checked bags per person).
  • No. The complimentary checked bag benefit (up to 3 free bags for cardholder and companions on the same reservation) is a Delta loyalty benefit, not a travel insurance benefit. Trip delay coverage is separate and requires a delay of 12 or more hours on any Common Carrier fare charged to the card. The free bag perk applies at check-in regardless of any delay.
  • The American Express Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Card provides secondary CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) coverage up to $50,000 for rentals of 30 consecutive days or less. Decline the CDW at the counter and charge the full rental to the card. Secondary means your personal auto insurer pays first. The card then covers your deductible and the remaining gap up to $50,000.
  • File at aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress or call AIG at 1-844-933-0648. File on the day of the delay. The 60-day deadline runs from the delay date, not from when you return home. You will need your card billing statement showing the Delta fare, the carrier's delay confirmation (flight delay certificate or similar), and receipts for all meals and lodging claimed.
  • The American Express Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Card does not cover trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage delay, emergency medical expenses abroad, emergency evacuation, repatriation, or travel accident insurance. The Global Assist Hotline provides coordination only, with no financial support for medical or evacuation costs. Cell phone protection is not included. The 12-hour delay threshold and 2-claim annual cap limit the trip delay benefit significantly for frequent travelers.
  • No. Trip Cancellation is not included on the American Express Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Card. A canceled $4,000 group Delta fare for a company offsite generates zero reimbursement from the card. Business teams who book non-refundable fares for multiple employees should carry a standalone travel policy or consider a higher-tier Amex business card with trip cancellation coverage included.
  • Yes, for any business trip with significant prepaid costs or international travel. The card provides no trip cancellation, no emergency medical coverage, and no financial support for evacuation. For domestic travel with only flexible fares, the card's trip delay ($300/12h) and lost luggage ($1,250/$500) benefits provide limited supplemental value. For international trips or any booking with non-refundable costs, a standalone travel insurance policy is strongly recommended.
