Our take on travel insurance for the American Express Marriott Bonvoy Bevy Card

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Trip delay at $300 per trip after 12 hours is the Bevy's only travel benefit, paired with a secondary baggage loss benefit. The Marriott Bonvoy Bevy benefits package carries no trip cancellation, no emergency medical, and no evacuation coverage. For a $250-annual-fee card, that gap is significant. The delay benefit requires all transportation to be charged to the card, and AIG caps reimbursements at 2 claims per 12-month period. Reddit claims confirm the process works when conditions are met, but the 12-hour threshold means many common delays fall just under the wire.

What works on travel
  • Trip delay benefit pays up to $300 for hotel, meals, medication, and toiletries after a 12-hour delay
  • Lost baggage covered up to $1,250 for carry-on and $500 for checked bags when the ticket is charged to the card
  • Global Assist Hotline provides 24/7 coordination for emergency situations abroad, including medical referrals and emergency cash
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation: a prepaid vacation cancelled for illness, job loss, or death in the family is not reimbursed
  • Trip delay threshold is 12 hours, compared to 6 hours on the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant
  • Maximum 2 trip delay claims per 12-month period regardless of how many qualifying delays occur
  • No emergency medical: hospital fees abroad, prescription drugs, and emergency surgery are 100% out of pocket
  • No medical evacuation: emergency air transport from abroad can cost $50,000 or more
  • Baggage loss is secondary to airline liability, meaning you must file a claim with the airline first

What does American Express Marriott Bonvoy Bevy Card Travel Insurance actually cover?

The Marriott Bonvoy Bevy does not include trip cancellation insurance. A prepaid vacation cancelled due to illness, job loss, death in the family, or any other reason has no reimbursement from the card. This is a significant gap for a $250-annual-fee card: the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant at $650/year covers trip cancellation up to $10,000.

No trip interruption coverage. If a trip is cut short due to a covered emergency and you forfeit prepaid unused expenses, the card provides no reimbursement.

No emergency medical or hospital coverage abroad. The Global Assist Hotline (1-800-228-6855 in the US, +1-715-343-7977 collect from abroad) can help locate a hospital or English-speaking doctor, but pays no medical bills. One verified Reddit case resulted in $3,400 in out-of-pocket costs after a cardholder discovered that Global Assist is coordination only, not insurance.

No emergency medical evacuation or repatriation benefit. Medical air transport from a remote destination or a foreign country can cost $50,000 to $200,000 without coverage. Global Assist can coordinate logistics, but does not pay.

The 12-hour trigger is the catch: a delay of 11 hours 59 minutes pays nothing, and you are capped at 2 claims per 12 months.

Trip delay coverage pays up to $300 per trip when a covered delay exceeds 12 hours. Administered by New Hampshire Insurance Company (an AIG company). Covered causes: adverse weather, terrorist act or hijacking, documented carrier equipment failure, and lost or stolen passport or travel documents. Reimbursable expenses include hotel, meals, toiletries, medications, and personal effects. Maximum 2 claims per 12 consecutive months. The entire transportation cost must be charged to the Bevy card, though payment combining the card with Bonvoy points or frequent flyer certificates qualifies. File by calling 1-844-933-0648 or visiting aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress within 60 days of the delay; submit proof of loss within 180 days.

What's covered
  • Hotel and lodging during the delay
  • Meals
  • Toiletries and personal effects
  • Medications
What's not covered
  • Delays shorter than 12 consecutive hours
  • More than 2 claims per 12 consecutive months
  • Delays not caused by weather, a terrorist act or hijacking, documented carrier equipment failure, or lost or stolen travel documents
  • Trips where the transportation was not charged in full to the Bevy card

No missed connection coverage. Replacement flights or hotel stays caused by missing a connection are not reimbursed.

No early return coverage. The cost of returning home early due to a family emergency or medical situation at home is not reimbursed.

No baggage delay reimbursement. Emergency purchases for toiletries and clothing while waiting for delayed luggage are not covered. The Bevy covers baggage that is permanently lost or stolen, but not delayed.

Secondary to the airline: you must file with the carrier and collect their payout first. The cap is split $1,250 carry-on / $500 checked, not $1,750 on a single bag.

Lost, damaged, or stolen baggage is covered up to $1,250 for carry-on bags and $500 for checked bags, for a combined maximum of $1,750 per trip. Coverage is secondary: you must file a claim with the airline first and collect their liability payment before the card benefit applies. The ticket must have been charged to the Bevy card. Administered by AMEX Assurance Company via americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits.

What's covered
  • Carry-on baggage up to $1,250
  • Checked baggage up to $500
  • Combined maximum $1,750 per trip
  • Bags that are lost, damaged, or stolen
What's not covered
  • Delayed baggage (only permanent loss, damage, or theft qualify)
  • Amounts already recovered from the airline
  • Trips where the ticket was not charged to the Bevy card

No personal liability or travel accident coverage. Accidental death, dismemberment, or liability for injury to a third party while traveling is not covered by the card.

No hotel theft protection. Personal belongings stolen from a hotel room or safe are not covered under the travel benefits. Purchase protection (90-day window) may apply if the stolen item was recently purchased with the card.

Trip delay paid out after a 13-hour delay

Used the trip delay benefit when our connecting flight was delayed 13 hours due to a weather system. Submitted hotel and meal receipts for about $280 through the AIG portal. Approved within a month, no pushback on any of the receipts. The process was more straightforward than I expected. You do have to document everything, but if you keep your receipts, it works.

CDW abroad saved me from a $1,200 repair bill

Rented a car in Portugal, had a minor fender-bender in a parking lot. Declined the rental company's CDW at the counter, paid with the Bevy card, signed as primary driver. Filed with AMEX Assurance and they paid the rental company directly. No personal insurance claim, no out-of-pocket cost. Primary coverage abroad is the real feature here. Just do not rent in Italy, Australia, or New Zealand.

How to file a claim on the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy

1

Trip delay (AIG)

Call 1-844-933-0648 or go to aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress within 60 days of the delay. Prepare: carrier-issued written confirmation of delay, copies of your tickets, credit card billing statement, and receipts for all expenses claimed. Submit the completed proof-of-loss form within 180 days of the incident.

2

Car rental CDW (AMEX Assurance)

Do not settle directly with the rental company before contacting AMEX Assurance. File the claim at americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits. Required documents: original signed rental agreement, itemized repair invoice from the rental company, photographs of the damage, and the rental company's formal damage statement. Documented processing time in one Reddit case was 8 weeks.

3

Purchase protection or extended warranty (AMEX Assurance)

File at americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits or call 1-800-228-6855. For purchase protection, file within 30 days of the incident. For extended warranty, contact AMEX Assurance when the original manufacturer warranty expires and the defect occurs within the 1-year extension window.

4

Baggage loss (AMEX Assurance)

Coverage is secondary. File a claim with the airline first and obtain their written settlement before contacting AMEX Assurance. File at americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits. Required: airline documentation of loss, your airline settlement letter, and the original boarding passes or ticket receipts charged to the Bevy card.

FAQ

What people ask about the American Express Marriott Bonvoy Bevy Card

  • No. The Marriott Bonvoy Bevy does not include trip cancellation or trip interruption insurance. If you prepay a flight, hotel stay, or vacation package and cancel for any reason, including illness, a death in the family, or job loss, the card provides no reimbursement. This is the most significant insurance gap on the Bevy at the $250-annual-fee level. The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant at $650 per year covers cancellations up to $10,000 per trip. If you regularly book expensive prepaid travel, that gap is worth pricing against the annual fee difference.
  • The Bevy includes Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance (CRLDI) administered by AMEX Assurance Company. Three conditions must all be met: pay the entire rental with the card, decline the CDW offered by the rental company at the counter, and sign the contract as the primary driver. Coverage is secondary inside the US, meaning your personal auto insurance pays first. Outside the US, it is primary: AMEX Assurance pays the rental company directly, no personal policy involved. The maximum is $50,000 per rental agreement for up to 30 consecutive days. Three countries are explicitly excluded: Australia, Italy, and New Zealand.
  • No. The Bevy does not include emergency medical insurance, hospital reimbursement, or medical evacuation coverage. The Global Assist Hotline (1-800-228-6855 in the US, +1-715-343-7977 collect from abroad) can help coordinate finding a hospital, doctor, or emergency translator, but does not pay any medical bills. One cardholder on Reddit reported $3,400 in out-of-pocket medical costs after discovering this distinction. If you travel internationally without employer-sponsored health coverage, you are fully exposed without a separate travel medical policy.
  • Call 1-844-933-0648 or go to aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress within 60 days of the delay. You need the carrier's written confirmation of the delay, your ticket copies, the credit card billing statement, and receipts for every expense you are claiming. Submit the completed proof-of-loss form within 180 days of the incident. The delay must exceed 12 hours and must result from one of four covered causes: adverse weather, a terrorist act or hijacking, documented carrier equipment failure, or lost or stolen travel documents. Maximum reimbursement is $300 per trip, with a cap of 2 claims per 12-month period.
  • It depends on where you rent. Outside the United States, the Bevy card provides primary CDW (collision damage waiver): AMEX Assurance pays the rental company directly without involving your personal auto insurance. Inside the United States, coverage is secondary: your personal auto insurer pays first, and the card covers remaining eligible costs. For US renters, secondary coverage still means zero out-of-pocket in most collision scenarios, but it does require you to file a claim with your personal insurer first, which can affect your rates and deductible.
  • Purchase Protection covers eligible items bought with the Bevy card against theft and accidental damage for 90 days from the purchase date. Maximum $1,000 per claim, with no deductible. The annual account maximum is $50,000. File within 30 days of the incident at americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits. You need the original receipt, a police report if the item was stolen, or a repair estimate if it was damaged. The coverage is for physical theft and accidental damage only, not mysterious disappearance or mechanical failure.
  • No. Australia, Italy, and New Zealand are explicitly excluded under the Bevy card's CRLDI terms. If you rent in any of those three countries, the card's CDW benefit does not apply regardless of whether you meet all other activation conditions. You will need to purchase the rental company's CDW at the counter or carry separate rental car insurance. This exclusion has caught cardholders off guard: at least one verified Reddit case describes a traveler declining CDW in Italy and discovering at the counter that the card does not cover that country.
  • The Marriott Bonvoy Bevy benefits center on hotel loyalty, not insurance. You earn Gold Elite status automatically, 6x Bonvoy points at Marriott properties, 4x at US restaurants and supermarkets up to $15,000 combined per year, and a Free Night Award worth up to 50,000 Bonvoy points at each renewal. On the insurance side, the card covers trip delay up to $300 after 12 hours, rental car damage up to $50,000 (primary outside the US), baggage loss up to $1,750 combined, and purchase protection up to $1,000 per claim. What it does not cover: trip cancellation, emergency medical abroad, medical evacuation, and cell phone protection.
  • Deadlines vary by benefit. For trip delay: call AIG at 1-844-933-0648 or file at aig.claimnotify.com/americanexpress within 60 days of the incident, then submit your completed proof-of-loss form within 180 days. For purchase protection: file within 30 days of the incident at americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits. For rental car CDW: contact AMEX Assurance as soon as the damage occurs and before settling directly with the rental company. Missing the 60-day trip delay notification window is the most common reason for initial denial, per the AIG policy terms.
