Our take on travel insurance for the Chase Aeroplan

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Carrier fares only. No medical. Here's what that means before an Air Canada trip. So you booked a flight on the card and assume the whole trip is insured. Partly. Trip cancellation and interruption pay up to $1,500 per covered traveler and $6,000 per trip, but only for non-refundable fares, change fees and award redeposit fees charged by the common carrier: your hotel and tours are not reimbursed. Trip delay adds up to $500 per traveler after 12 hours or an overnight stay, and baggage delay pays $100 a day for 3 days once a bag is 6 hours late. There is no emergency medical, no evacuation, no lost luggage cover and no travel accident insurance in the Guide to Benefits. Standalone travel insurance with $100,000 of emergency medical typically starts at $30 to $80 for a one-week international trip. If you mostly fly short domestic hops, the delay benefits cover what actually goes wrong. If you travel abroad, buy separate medical cover before you leave.

What works on travel
  • $1,500 trip cancellation and interruption per traveler: up to $6,000 per trip on non-refundable carrier fares, change fees and award redeposit fees, with no deductible
  • $500 trip delay per traveler: meals, lodging, toiletries and medication after a 12-hour delay or an overnight stay
  • $100 a day baggage delay for up to 3 days: toiletries, clothes and chargers when checked bags are more than 6 hours late
  • Family covered without you: Covered Travelers do not need to travel with you, as long as their fare was paid with the card or card rewards
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical coverage: a hospital bill abroad is entirely out of pocket unless you buy separate travel medical insurance
  • No emergency evacuation: a medical flight home can run well into five figures and nothing in the guide pays for it
  • Hotels and tours not covered by trip cancellation: only common carrier fares, change fees and redeposit fees are reimbursed
  • No lost or damaged luggage coverage: only delayed bags are covered, a suitcase the airline loses for good is not
  • 12-hour trip delay threshold: shorter delays do not qualify unless they force an overnight stay, and only equipment failure, weather, strike or hijacking count

What does Chase Aeroplan Travel Insurance actually cover?

The cap only applies to carrier charges. On a $4,000 trip with a $1,200 flight and a $2,800 hotel, the most you can recover is the $1,200 fare, even with a covered reason.

Want to cancel for any reason?

This card only refunds cancellation for a fixed list of covered reasons. Add a Cancel For Any Reason plan and get up to 75% back, no reason required.

Add Cancel For Any Reason

Deductible : No deductible

Trip cancellation reimburses up to $1,500 per covered traveler and $6,000 per trip when a trip is cancelled before departure for a covered reason. Only non-refundable fares charged by the common carrier, change fees imposed by the carrier and award redeposit fees are covered: hotels, tours and other prepaid bookings are not. You are covered when you pay all or part of the trip with the card and/or redeemable card rewards. Coverage is secondary, trips over 60 days are excluded, and you file within 20 days at chasecardbenefits.com.

Recommended : $10,000

What's covered
  • Covered Traveler or Traveling Companion dies, or suffers an accidental injury or illness and a physician advises cancelling
  • A Family Member of the Covered Traveler or Traveling Companion dies, or suffers a life-threatening injury or illness, is hospitalized or needs their care
  • Severe weather at home, at the point of origin or within 50 miles of the airport, lodging or host at destination that prevents safe travel
  • Named storm warning within 50 miles of the departure or arrival airport, booked lodging or host
  • Change in military orders for the Covered Traveler or their spouse or Domestic Partner
  • Organized strike affecting public transportation that makes you miss at least 20% of the trip or a prepaid cruise or tour departure
  • Terrorist incident within 25 miles of home, or of an airport or lodging on the itinerary, within 30 days of the trip
  • US government terrorism travel warning for the area around your home within 10 days of departure
  • US government terrorism travel warning within 25 miles of an airport or lodging on the itinerary, in effect within 30 days before departure
What's not covered
  • Hotels, tours and other prepaid expenses not charged by the common carrier
  • Change in plans, financial circumstances, or business or contractual obligations
  • Pre-existing conditions treated within the 60 days before the initial deposit or booking date
  • Epidemics or pandemics, border closures and fear of travel
  • Default or insolvency of the common carrier
  • Missing visas, passports or other travel documents
  • Any event that occurred before the trip was booked
Buy separate travel medical insurance before any international trip: many US health plans pay little abroad, and Medicare generally pays nothing outside the US.

No emergency medical coverage. The Aeroplan card's Guide to Benefits does not include emergency medical or dental expenses while traveling, so any doctor or hospital bill abroad is paid by you or your own health plan. A serious ER visit abroad can run $10,000 to $80,000.

What's not covered
  • Emergency medical and dental expenses while traveling are not included.

No emergency evacuation or transportation benefit. If you are seriously injured or sick on a trip, the cost of a medical flight, a transfer to a better hospital or repatriation is not covered by the card. An air ambulance can cost well into five figures.

What's not covered
  • Emergency evacuation, medical transportation and repatriation of remains are not included.

Deductible : No deductible

Trip interruption reimburses up to $1,500 per covered traveler and $6,000 per trip when a trip is cut short for a covered reason. It covers the unused non-refundable common carrier fare, carrier change fees and award redeposit fees. If the interruption is for medical treatment, ground transportation up to $250 to the airport or home is also covered. A new or more expensive fare to get home is not covered. Coverage is secondary. File within 20 days at chasecardbenefits.com.

Recommended : $10,000

What's covered
  • Same covered reasons as trip cancellation, except the terrorism reasons
  • Terrorist incident within 25 miles of an airport or lodging on the itinerary during the trip
  • US government terrorism travel warning within 25 miles of an airport or lodging on the itinerary, issued during the trip
  • Unused non-refundable common carrier fares, change fees and award redeposit fees
  • Ground transportation up to $250 when the interruption is for medical treatment
What's not covered
  • Same exclusions as trip cancellation
  • The cost of a new fare, or the difference between the original fare and a new fare, to return home or rejoin the trip
  • Unused hotel nights, tours and other expenses not charged by the common carrier
Crew shortages are not a covered cause. Only weather, equipment failure, strike, and hijacking qualify. Ask the airline for a written statement identifying the official cause before filing.

Deductible : No deductible

Trip delay reimburses up to $500 per covered traveler for reasonable additional expenses during a delay of more than 12 hours, or any delay requiring an overnight stay. Covered expenses include meals, lodging, toiletries, and medication. The delay must be caused by equipment failure, inclement weather, strike, or hijacking. Coverage is secondary. File within 60 days at chasecardbenefits.com.

What's covered
  • Meals
  • Lodging
  • Toiletries
  • Medication
What's not covered
  • Delays caused by anything other than equipment failure, inclement weather, strike or hijacking (for example crew shortages)
  • Delays of 12 hours or less that do not require an overnight stay

No missed connection benefit. If a late inbound flight makes you miss a connection, rebooking costs are not covered as a standalone benefit. Trip delay may reimburse meals and lodging if the wait passes 12 hours or forces an overnight stay for a covered cause.

What's not covered
  • Standalone missed connection expenses are not covered.

No standalone early return benefit. If you cut a trip short for a covered reason, trip interruption reimburses the unused non-refundable carrier fare up to $1,500 per person, plus up to $250 of ground transportation for medical cases. The cost of a new flight home is not covered.

What's not covered
  • Standalone early return transportation costs are not a separate benefit.

Deductible : No deductible

Baggage delay insurance reimburses up to $100 per day for essential purchases when checked baggage is delayed more than 6 hours by the Common Carrier, up to a maximum of 3 days ($300 total). Covered purchases include toiletries, clothing, and electronic device chargers. Coverage is secondary. File within 20 days at chasecardbenefits.com.

What's covered
  • Toiletries, a change of clothes, and chargers for electronic devices (limit one per device)
What's not covered
  • Hearing aids, artificial teeth, dental bridges, prosthetic devices
  • Tickets, documents, money, securities, checks, travelers checks
  • Business samples
  • Jewelry and watches
  • Cameras, video recorders and other electronic equipment
  • Sports and recreational equipment
  • Delays on the return trip to your point of origin

No lost or damaged luggage coverage. The Guide to Benefits only covers delayed bags. If the airline loses or damages your suitcase, you rely on the airline's own liability, which is limited and often paid at depreciated value.

What's not covered
  • Lost, damaged or stolen baggage is not included.

No travel accident insurance. The card does not pay a lump sum for accidental death or dismemberment while riding a common carrier or during a trip.

What's not covered
  • Travel accident (AD&D) insurance is not included.

No hotel theft protection. Personal belongings stolen from your hotel room are not covered as a standalone benefit. Purchase protection may cover items bought with the card if stolen within 120 days of purchase.

What's not covered
  • Hotel and accommodation theft is not a standalone benefit.

Flat tire on a rental reimbursed

Some of my damages which Chase covered (flat, punctured tire) I didn't even inform the rental company. I had it brought to a shop itself (well, towed), replaced, paid for by Chase Aeroplan, submitted all required docs and they reimbursed.

Step 1: Report and file as soon as possible

For trip cancellation or interruption: travel itinerary, card statement showing the charge, documentation confirming the covered reason (medical documents, death certificate) and the cancellation or refund policies of each provider. For trip delay: a statement from the common carrier explaining the reason for the delay and itemized receipts. For baggage delay: written confirmation of the delay from the carrier and itemized receipts. For rental car damage: accident report, initial and final rental agreements, repair estimate and itemized repair bill, and two photographs of the damaged vehicle.

FAQ

What people ask about the Chase Aeroplan

  • Most Aeroplan card benefits activate automatically when you pay all or part of the common carrier fare with the card and/or redeemable card rewards. No enrollment and no pre-trip registration call is required. Trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay and baggage delay all work this way. For rental car coverage, you must pay for the entire rental with the card and decline the agency's collision damage waiver at the counter. For purchase protection, all or part of the item must be paid with the card. Keep the card statement showing the charge: every claim asks for it.
  • Coverage extends to you as the cardholder and your Family Members. The guide defines Family Member broadly: your spouse or Domestic Partner and their parents, your children (including adopted and stepchildren), parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, plus their spouses or partners. For trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay and baggage delay, Covered Travelers do not need to travel with you, as long as their fare was paid with your card or card rewards. For rental car CDW, coverage applies to you as the primary renter and to any additional drivers allowed by the rental agreement.
  • The Aeroplan rental car benefit is collision damage waiver (CDW) coverage up to $60,000: in the US it is secondary and reimburses costs for damage or theft to a rental vehicle after your personal auto insurance pays first, including your deductible; outside the US it is primary. To activate it, pay for the entire rental with the card and decline the rental agency's CDW at the counter. Coverage applies worldwide with no named country exclusions, for rentals up to 31 consecutive days. Exotic vehicles over $125,000 MSRP, trucks, motorcycles and large vans are excluded. The card does not cover personal liability, personal injury, or damage to other vehicles. If the rental agency requires a letter of coverage, call 1-800-349-2634 before picking up the vehicle.
  • File through chasecardbenefits.com or call 1-800-349-2634 (outside the US, call collect 001-214-503-2951). The insurer is Virginia Surety Company, Inc., an Assurant company. For trip cancellation, interruption and baggage delay, notify within 20 days and send documents within 90 days. For trip delay, notify within 60 days and send documents within 100 days. For rental car damage, report within 100 days. For purchase protection, notify within 90 days. Have your card statement, travel itinerary and proof of the covered reason ready before filing, and send everything in one go to avoid repeated document requests.
  • The biggest gaps: there is no emergency medical, no emergency evacuation, no lost luggage coverage and no travel accident insurance. Trip cancellation and interruption only reimburse common carrier fares, change fees and award redeposit fees, up to $1,500 per person, so prepaid hotels and tours are not covered. Trip delay requires a 12-hour delay or an overnight stay, and the cause must be equipment failure, weather, strike or hijacking. The rental CDW is secondary in the US. Purchase protection is capped at $500 per item, and there is no extended warranty, return protection or cell phone protection.
  • Yes, for any international trip. The Aeroplan card has no emergency medical coverage at all: the Guide to Benefits does not include medical or dental expenses while traveling, and there is no emergency evacuation benefit either. A standard ER visit in Europe or Japan can cost $10,000 to $80,000, and a medical flight home can run well into five figures. Many US health plans pay little abroad, and Medicare generally pays nothing outside the US. Standalone travel health insurance covering $100,000 per person typically starts at $30 to $80 for a one-week international trip.
  • No. Trip cancellation and interruption only reimburse non-refundable fares charged by the common carrier (airline, train, ferry or cruise line), change fees imposed by the carrier and award redeposit fees. A prepaid hotel, vacation rental, tour or excursion is not a covered expense, even if you paid it with the card. The cap is $1,500 per covered traveler and $6,000 per trip, coverage is secondary to any refund or other insurance, and trips longer than 60 days are excluded. If most of your trip cost is lodging or tours, a standalone trip cancellation policy is the only way to protect it.
  • Cell phone protection is not included with this card. Damage, theft, or screen breakage on your phone is not a covered event under any section of the benefits. Purchase protection does cover new items bought with the card against damage and theft within 120 days, but only if the phone itself was purchased using this card within that 120-day window. Monthly wireless bill payments do not activate any coverage. For a $195 annual fee card, this absence is typical for the tier.
  • No. The card only covers delayed baggage, not luggage that is lost, damaged or stolen. If your checked bag is more than 6 hours late at your destination, baggage delay reimburses essentials such as toiletries, clothes and chargers up to $100 a day for 3 days. If the airline loses the bag for good, you rely on the airline's own liability, which is limited and often paid at depreciated value. Report any problem to the airline before leaving the airport and keep the written report: you need it for both the airline claim and the baggage delay claim.
