Our opinion on USAA Rate Advantage Visa Platinum Travel Insurance

Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Book your trip with this card and cancellation or early return coverage up to $1,500 per person kicks in for covered events. A $500,000 travel accident benefit covers the journey itself on planes, ferries, trains, and buses. Beyond those two protections, the travel picture is thin. There is no emergency medical coverage abroad, no evacuation benefit, and no protection for permanently lost bags. Delayed bags get $100 per day up to $300 after four hours. For a low-APR card with no annual fee, these are solid baseline protections. For comprehensive international travel, a supplemental policy should fill the gaps.

What works on travel
  • Trip cancellation and interruption reimburses up to $1,500 per covered traveler for non-refundable prepaid costs
  • $500,000 travel accident insurance covers loss of life or limb on common carrier journeys paid with the card
  • Baggage delay pays up to $100 per day (max $300) when checked bags are held up four hours or more
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical coverage abroad: hospital bills overseas are entirely out of pocket
  • No medical evacuation benefit: arranging emergency transport home is your financial responsibility
  • No protection for permanently lost luggage, only for delayed bags
  • No standalone trip delay: meals and accommodation during delayed flights are not covered

A solid everyday card for military families

As a longtime USAA Rate Advantage Platinum cardholder, I am pleased with the card's benefits and, as always, USAA's excellent customer service. It's my go-to card for everyday spending, large purchases, and travel expenses — a low interest rate combined with robust purchase and travel protections.

Real interest savings for balance carriers

If you carry a $5,000 balance, USAA's rate (~12%) compared to a typical rewards card rate (~21%) saves you approximately $450 per year in interest. For military families facing unexpected expenses like PCS moves or emergency travel, having the option to carry a balance at a low rate provides real financial flexibility.

Great bank, great card if you pay it off

I pay this card off every month and USAA has always been a great bank and insurance company. The card does what it's supposed to do with no fuss.

Best option for balance carriers in the military community

USAA Rate Advantage is best for balance carriers who want the lowest possible APR. If you don't carry a balance or want rewards, there are better options — but for military families that occasionally need to float expenses, it's hard to beat.

No foreign transaction fee is huge when stationed OCONUS

The no foreign transaction fee is huge if you're stationed overseas. Combined with the low rate, it's the card I keep in my wallet for international use.

Decent benefits, cell phone coverage is the highlight

The card benefits like trip cancellation and purchase protection are decent for a no-annual-fee card. Don't expect Chase Sapphire-level protections, but the cell phone coverage alone is worth putting your phone bill on it.

Lost a dispute I should have won

Several disputes that were completely in my favor were awarded to the other party. I showed USAA a company listed on a scam alert and still lost my money — hundreds of dollars. The dispute process is frustrating.

Claims handling needs improvement

Poor claims handling and slow resolution, with poor phone access, scripted responses, and inconsistent adjuster follow-up. Expected better from USAA given its reputation.

FAQ

What people ask about the USAA Rate Advantage Visa Platinum

  • No enrollment or activation is required. All benefits apply automatically once you use the card for eligible purchases. For travel benefits, charge the full cost of your transportation or trip to the card before departure. For purchase protection and extended warranty, simply pay with the card at checkout. Cell phone protection requires one additional step: pay your monthly wireless bill with this card each month to keep the benefit active. If your bill goes to another payment method, coverage does not apply for that month.
  • The primary cardholder and authorized users are covered. For travel benefits, the covered person must have charged the trip to the card. Trip cancellation and interruption extends to the cardholder's spouse and dependent children traveling on the same prepaid itinerary. Coverage does not automatically extend to travel companions who are not included in the same booking or who did not charge their portion to this card. For cell phone protection, authorized users on the same wireless plan are also covered when the monthly bill is paid with the card.
  • Coverage is secondary worldwide. That means your personal auto insurance must pay first in the event of a collision or theft, and this card reimburses whatever remains up to the vehicle's full replacement value. This applies whether you are renting in the United States or abroad. Unlike some Visa Signature cards, there is no flip to primary coverage when renting outside the US. To activate coverage, pay the entire rental with the card and decline the CDW or equivalent waiver offered at the rental counter. Maximum coverage applies to rentals of 31 consecutive days or less.
  • Contact Sedgwick Claims Management Services at 1-844-288-2141 to open your claim. International callers can reach them at 1-804-673-1164. Report the incident within the required notification window and submit your completed claim with all supporting documents before the filing deadline. Documents typically include itemized receipts, proof of card payment, and depending on the claim: a medical report for illness-related cancellations, a police report for theft, a carrier delay notice for baggage claims, or a rental agreement for CDW claims. Keep copies of everything until the claim is fully resolved.
  • The card does not cover emergency medical expenses abroad, medical evacuation, or repatriation. Permanently lost or stolen luggage is not covered, only bags delayed four hours or more by a common carrier. There is no standalone trip delay benefit: meals and hotel stays during a delayed flight are not reimbursed. Rental car liability for damage to third-party vehicles or property is excluded. Cell phone protection does not apply to lost phones, accessories, leased or prepaid devices, or cosmetic damage. Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded from trip cancellation triggers.
  • Covered reasons include sudden illness, injury, or death of the cardholder or an immediate family member; severe weather that prevents travel; involuntary changes to military duty orders; and government-issued travel advisories affecting the destination. The trip must have been prepaid and non-refundable, with the full cost charged to the card. The maximum reimbursement is $1,500 per covered person. The same benefit applies if a covered event forces you to interrupt and return home early. Contact Sedgwick Claims at 1-844-288-2141 as soon as the covered event occurs and submit your documentation within the required filing window.
  • Yes. The card provides Travel Accident Insurance up to $500,000 for loss of life, limb, sight, speech, or hearing during covered travel. Coverage applies when you pay for transportation on a common carrier such as an airplane, ferry, cruise ship, train, or bus with the card. Benefits are paid on a scheduled basis: 100% of the principal sum for loss of life or two qualifying losses, and 50% for a single loss of one limb or sight in one eye. This benefit requires no enrollment and activates automatically when transportation is charged to the card.
  • Yes. If a common carrier delays your checked bags by four hours or more, the card reimburses up to $100 per day for essential purchases such as clothing, toiletries, and necessary medications, up to a maximum of $300 over three days. The transportation must have been paid with this card. Keep all receipts for items purchased during the delay period. Note that this benefit applies only to delayed bags: luggage that is permanently lost or stolen by the carrier is not covered under this benefit.
  • Pay your monthly wireless bill with this card and you receive up to $500 in reimbursement if your phone is stolen or accidentally damaged. Coverage applies to the primary cardholder and authorized users on the same wireless plan. The benefit is tied to how you pay your bill each month: if the monthly bill is charged to a different card or payment method, coverage does not apply that month. Protection does not cover lost phones, phone accessories, leased or prepaid devices, or cosmetic damage that does not affect the phone's core functionality. File your claim through Sedgwick at 1-844-288-2141.
  • It depends entirely on how you use it. If you carry a balance month to month, the Rate Advantage is designed for you: its low APR can save hundreds of dollars annually compared to a typical rewards card charging 20% or more. For a military family managing a PCS move or unexpected expenses, the ability to float a balance at a low rate is often worth more than 1.5% cashback. If you pay your balance in full every month, a rewards card likely offers more value. The card's travel and purchase protections are solid for a no-annual-fee product, but rental car coverage remains secondary even when renting abroad, unlike some Visa Signature alternatives.
