Our opinion on USAA Preferred Cash Rewards Visa Signature Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

When your trip is cancelled or cut short by a qualifying event, the USAA Preferred Cash Rewards returns up to $1,500 per person in non-refundable prepaid costs. A $500,000 travel accident benefit adds real protection for the journey itself on planes, ferries, and buses. The gaps are harder to miss than the coverage. There is no emergency medical benefit, no evacuation coverage, and nothing for lost luggage. Delayed bags get $100 per day up to $300 after a four-hour wait. This card leaves a real financial gap. Not a minor one: any serious illness overseas falls entirely on you.

What works on travel
  • Trip cancellation and interruption pays up to $1,500 per covered traveler for prepaid, non-refundable costs
  • $500,000 travel accident insurance covers loss of life, limb, sight, speech, or hearing on common carrier trips
  • Baggage delay reimbursement of $100 per day (up to $300) kicks in after a four-hour wait
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical coverage abroad: all hospital bills are your responsibility
  • No medical evacuation benefit: arranging emergency transport home comes entirely out of pocket
  • No protection for lost or permanently stolen luggage, only for delayed bags
  • No standalone trip delay coverage: meals and hotel stays during delayed flights are not reimbursed

FAQ

What people ask about the USAA Preferred Cash Rewards Visa Signature

  • No activation is required. Benefits apply automatically when you charge eligible purchases to the card. For travel benefits, pay the full cost of your transportation or trip with the card before departure. For purchase protection and extended warranty, simply use the card at checkout. Cell phone protection requires paying your monthly wireless bill with the card each month to maintain coverage.
  • The primary cardholder and authorized users are covered. For travel benefits, covered persons must have their trip charged to the card. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage extends to the cardholder's spouse and dependent children traveling on the same prepaid itinerary. Travel companions who are not part of the same booking or who did not charge their costs to this card are not covered.
  • It depends on where you rent. In the United States and US territories, coverage is secondary: your personal auto insurance pays first, and this card reimburses whatever remains up to the vehicle's full replacement value. Outside the US, coverage becomes primary: you can file directly with the benefit administrator without involving your personal insurer. To activate either mode, pay for the entire rental with the card and decline the CDW offered at the counter.
  • Start your claim online at eclaimsline.com or by calling 1-844-288-2141. You must report the incident within 20 days and submit all required documentation within 90 days. Depending on the benefit, documentation typically includes itemized receipts, proof of card payment, a police report for theft claims, a medical report for illness-related trip cancellations, or a carrier delay notice for baggage delay claims. Keep copies of everything until your claim is resolved.
  • The card does not cover emergency medical expenses abroad, medical evacuation, or repatriation. Permanently lost or stolen luggage is not covered, only delayed bags. There is no standalone trip delay benefit covering meals or hotels during a delayed flight. Rental car liability for damage to other vehicles or property is excluded. Cell phone protection does not apply to lost phones, accessories, leased devices, or cosmetic damage. Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded from trip cancellation triggers.
  • Covered reasons include sudden illness, injury, or death of the cardholder or an immediate family member; severe weather; labor strikes that affect travel; involuntary changes to military duty orders; and carrier insolvency. The trip must have been prepaid and non-refundable, and the full cost must have been charged to the card. The maximum benefit is $1,500 per covered person. You must notify the administrator within 20 days of cancellation and submit your claim within 90 days.
  • Yes. The card provides Travel Accident Insurance up to $500,000 for loss of life, limb, sight, speech, or hearing. Coverage applies when you pay for travel on a common carrier such as an airplane, ferry, cruise ship, or bus with the card. Benefits are paid on a scheduled basis: 100% of the principal sum for loss of life or two qualifying losses, and 50% for a single loss of one limb or sight in one eye.
  • Yes. If a common carrier delays your checked bags by four hours or more, the card reimburses up to $100 per day for essential purchases such as toiletries, clothing, and necessary medications, up to a maximum of $300 total. The flight or transportation must have been paid with the card. Keep all receipts for items purchased during the delay period. Note that this benefit covers delays only: permanently lost or stolen bags are not covered.
  • Yes. Pay your monthly wireless bill with this card and you receive up to $500 in reimbursement if your phone is stolen or accidentally damaged. Coverage applies to the primary account holder and authorized users on the same wireless plan. It does not apply to lost phones, phone accessories, leased or prepaid devices, or cosmetic damage that does not affect the phone's core function.
  • Not as a standalone solution. The card provides useful coverage for trip cancellation and interruption (up to $1,500 per person), travel accident insurance ($500,000 on common carriers), and baggage delays ($100 per day up to $300). What it cannot cover is the most costly risk: emergency medical care abroad and medical evacuation. For USAA members traveling internationally, pairing this card with a dedicated travel insurance policy or the USAA Travel Insurance product is strongly recommended to fill the medical and evacuation gap.
