Our opinion on Citi Diamond Preferred Travel Insurance

Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

No travel insurance. No medical. Here's what the Citi Diamond Preferred card benefits gap actually means the moment you board a plane. Most cardholders assume a Mastercard credit card includes some form of trip cancellation or delay protection. The Diamond Preferred doesn't: Citi removed all travel benefits from this card in September 2019, leaving zero coverage for any travel incident. Premium travel cards cover emergency medical from $100,000 per person abroad. This card covers $0. A single ER visit in Japan averages $15,000 to $60,000, none of which this card reimburses. If you carry the Diamond Preferred alongside a travel-focused card that has real coverage, this gap doesn't matter for your trip. If this is your only card when you board that flight, every medical bill, every canceled prepaid hotel, every delayed bag is entirely yours.

What works on travel
  • $0 annual fee: no cost to hold this card alongside a travel card that actually covers you
  • Mastercard ID Theft Protection: free dark web monitoring, enrollment required at mastercardus.idprotectiononline.com
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation: prepaid flights and hotels are not reimbursable for any covered reason
  • No emergency medical abroad: every dollar of any hospital bill outside the US is yours
  • No emergency evacuation: air ambulance from a remote destination runs $100,000 to $300,000 out of pocket
  • No trip delay: meals, lodging, and transportation during delays are not covered

What does Citi Diamond Preferred Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

Citi discontinued trip cancellation on the Diamond Preferred in September 2019. A $3,000 non-refundable trip canceled for illness has no recourse through this card.

  • All trip cancellation scenarios: benefit not available on this card
No emergency medical insurance exists on this card. Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is yours. Medicare covers $0 outside the United States.

No emergency medical coverage. This benefit is not included with this card. All medical costs abroad are the cardholder's responsibility. A single ER visit in Japan or Europe typically runs $10,000 to $80,000.

CR

CreditKarma

September 2024

Good credit limit for balance transfers

Got approved for $10,300. Which is good. Hoping to strategically manage multiple high-interest debts by consolidating them here at the 21-month 0% rate.

CR

CreditKarma

August 2024

Credit limit cut after balance transfer

They offer you 21 months, you do a balance transfer and you start paying more to bring your balance down, then the issuer dropped credit limits. That hurt my utilization ratio and my overall credit score at exactly the wrong time.

42 minutes to unblock a large purchase

Had a large international purchase blocked without warning. It took a 42-minute call with four different agents: including the fraud department and a supervisor, just to authorize a single transaction. No travel insurance, no trip cancellation, and now this.

How to file a Diamond Preferred claim

1

Step 1: Enroll in ID Theft Protection

Activate Mastercard's ID Theft Protection at mastercardus.idprotectiononline.com using your Diamond Preferred card number. Enrollment is free and takes about 5 minutes. You choose which personal information to monitor.

2

Step 2: Report suspicious activity to Citi

If monitoring alerts you to compromised data or you notice unauthorized charges, call Citi at 1-800-950-5114 immediately. Have your account number and a list of affected transactions ready. Citi's fraud team can freeze the account and issue a replacement card.

3

Step 3: Dispute and file identity theft report

For identity theft, file an official report at IdentityTheft.gov (FTC). Place a fraud alert or credit freeze with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Dispute any fraudulent accounts directly with each creditor. Citi's zero liability policy covers unauthorized charges.

FAQ

What people ask about the Citi Diamond Preferred

  • The Citi Diamond Preferred does not include travel insurance benefits. Citi removed trip cancellation, emergency medical, emergency evacuation, trip delay, and baggage coverage from this card in September 2019. There is nothing to activate. If you need travel insurance, you must purchase a standalone policy or use a different card that includes these benefits. The Diamond Preferred's value is its 21-month 0% APR on balance transfers, not travel protection.
  • The Diamond Preferred has no travel insurance, so there are no covered travelers for trip cancellation, medical, or delay benefits. The one active benefit, Mastercard ID Theft Protection, covers the primary cardholder and any authorized users who enroll separately at mastercardus.idprotectiononline.com. Enrollment is free and takes about 5 minutes. No other coverage extends to a spouse, dependents, or travel companions.
  • The Citi Diamond Preferred does not include rental car CDW coverage of any kind: primary or secondary. Citi removed auto rental CDW from this card in September 2019. When you rent a car, you will need to purchase the agency's collision damage waiver at the counter (typically $15 to $30 per day) or rely on your personal auto insurance policy. Never decline the agency's CDW based on this card alone.
  • The Diamond Preferred has no travel insurance or purchase protection claims to file. For unauthorized charges or suspected fraud, call Citi at 1-800-950-5114 at any time: Citi's zero liability policy covers unauthorized transactions. For identity theft, first enroll in Mastercard ID Theft Protection at mastercardus.idprotectiononline.com, then contact Citi if fraudulent activity appears. File a formal identity theft report at IdentityTheft.gov and place fraud alerts with the three major credit bureaus.
  • The Diamond Preferred does not cover trip cancellation, emergency medical expenses abroad, emergency evacuation, trip interruption, trip delay, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage, rental car CDW, purchase protection, extended warranty, or cell phone protection. Citi discontinued all of these benefits for this card in September 2019. The card's sole insurance-adjacent feature is Mastercard's enrollment-based ID Theft Protection, which monitors the internet and dark web but does not reimburse financial losses.
  • Yes. The Diamond Preferred covers $0 in emergency medical expenses abroad. Medicare also covers nothing outside the United States. If you travel internationally without a separate health plan that covers foreign medical care, every dollar of any hospital bill is yours. A single ER visit in Japan or Western Europe averages $10,000 to $80,000. Consider a standalone travel insurance policy or a credit card that includes emergency medical coverage before your next international trip.
  • No. The Citi Diamond Preferred does not include cell phone protection. Screen repair and device replacement are entirely out of pocket, regardless of whether you pay your monthly phone bill with this card. Flagship smartphone screen repair typically runs $150 to $500. Full device replacement runs $800 to $1,300. If cell phone protection matters to you, several no-annual-fee cards on the market include it, often with a $25 to $50 deductible.
  • The Diamond Preferred is not sufficient for any aspect of travel protection. It covers $0 in trip cancellation, emergency medical, evacuation, delay, baggage, or rental car damage. For any trip, domestic or international, you would need either a dedicated travel credit card with built-in coverage or a standalone travel insurance policy. The Diamond Preferred is designed exclusively for balance transfers and debt consolidation, not for travelers who need coverage on the road.
  • Yes. The Citi Diamond Preferred charges a 3% foreign transaction fee on all purchases made in a currency other than US dollars or processed through a foreign bank. On a $2,000 international trip, that adds $60 in fees. If you travel internationally, consider using a no-foreign-transaction-fee card for those purchases. The Diamond Preferred is best kept for domestic balance transfers rather than international spending.
