Our opinion on Citi Strata Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

No travel insurance. None. The Citi Strata card does not include trip cancellation, trip delay, emergency medical, emergency evacuation, or any travel insurance benefit. Zero. That is not a coverage gap — it is a coverage absence. At $0 annual fee, no travel protection is standard for entry-level Mastercards. A single ER visit in Japan or Europe runs $10,000 to $80,000, entirely at the cardholder's expense. Standalone travel insurance covering $5,000 in trip cancellation and $100,000 in emergency medical starts around $150 per year. If you travel internationally, budget for that separately.

What works on travel
  • $0 annual fee: no cost to carry the card
  • Mastercard ID Theft Protection: dark web monitoring and resolution services included at no cost
  • Mastercard Global Service: 24/7 emergency card replacement and worldwide assistance
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation: prepaid flights, hotels, and tours are entirely at risk if you cancel for any reason
  • No emergency medical coverage abroad: every hospital bill is the cardholder's responsibility
  • No emergency evacuation: a medevac runs $200,000 and this card provides nothing
  • No trip delay: meals and lodging during delays are entirely out of pocket
  • No lost luggage, no baggage delay, no travel accident insurance

What does Citi Strata Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

No trip cancellation exists on this card. A $2,000 prepaid flight cancelled for illness, death, or any other reason is entirely the cardholder's loss.

No trip cancellation coverage. This benefit is not included with the Citi Strata card. Prepaid flights, hotels, and tours are not reimbursable if you cancel for any reason. A standalone travel insurance policy is required for this coverage.

What's not covered
  • All trip cancellation costs: not included with this card
No emergency medical insurance on this card. Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is yours. A serious ER visit in Japan or Europe runs $10,000 to $80,000.

No emergency medical coverage abroad. Mastercard Global Service provides referrals only. All medical costs abroad are the cardholder's responsibility. A single ER visit in Japan or Europe typically runs $10,000 to $80,000.

What's not covered
  • All emergency medical expenses abroad: not covered by this card
No emergency evacuation. A transoceanic air ambulance runs $200,000 or more. This card provides zero coverage for that scenario.

No emergency evacuation or repatriation benefit. Mastercard Global Service provides referrals and coordination only. Emergency transportation costs are entirely the cardholder's responsibility. Air evacuation from remote destinations can exceed $200,000.

What's not covered
  • All emergency evacuation and repatriation costs: not covered by this card

No trip interruption coverage. This benefit is not included with the Citi Strata card. Costs from a trip cut short are entirely out of pocket.

What's not covered
  • All trip interruption costs: not included with this card

No trip delay reimbursement. This benefit is not included with the Citi Strata card. Meals, lodging, and transportation during a delay are the cardholder's responsibility.

What's not covered
  • All trip delay expenses: not included with this card

No missed connection coverage. This benefit is not included with the Citi Strata card. Rebooking costs and expenses from a missed connection are not covered.

What's not covered
  • All missed connection costs: not included with this card

What's not covered

No baggage delay reimbursement. Essential purchases during a baggage delay are the cardholder's full financial responsibility. A 48-hour delay can require $300 to $500 in essential purchases.

  • All baggage delay expenses: not included with this card

No lost or stolen baggage coverage. If luggage is permanently lost or stolen in transit, the airline's liability limit applies ($3,800 domestic, approximately $1,900 international). A checked bag with $2,000 in belongings would be unrecovered above the airline cap.

Great rewards, just know what it is

If you understand this is a rewards card and not a travel insurance card, you will be happy with it. 3x on supermarkets and my self-select category adds up fast. The fact it is $0 now makes it easy to keep. Just buy separate travel insurance before any trip.

No insurance at all, learned the hard way

Had to cancel a trip and assumed some basic trip cancellation would kick in. Nothing. This card has zero insurance. Not even CDW on rental cars. Good rewards card but completely useless as a travel protection card. My fault for not checking the guide to benefits before booking.

Successor to Rewards+ has same insurance gaps

Converted from Citi Rewards+ automatically. The rewards structure improved but the insurance situation is the same: nothing. No trip cancel, no emergency medical, no CDW. Use it for the points, carry a different card for any real travel protection.

FAQ

What people ask about the Citi Strata

  • The Citi Strata card does not include travel insurance benefits. There are no trip cancellation, trip delay, emergency medical, emergency evacuation, or rental car CDW benefits to activate. If you are looking for travel insurance, you will need to purchase a standalone travel insurance policy separately. The only benefits that require activation on this card are Mastercard ID Theft Protection, which requires enrollment at mastercardus.idprotectiononline.com.
  • Mastercard ID Theft Protection covers the primary cardholder. Mastercard Global Service emergency assistance is available to any Citi Strata cardholder. Since the Citi Strata includes no travel insurance, rental car coverage, or purchase protection, there are no covered travelers or beneficiaries for insurance purposes. For travel insurance coverage of you, your family, or travel companions, a separate travel insurance policy is required.
  • The Citi Strata card does not include any rental car CDW (collision damage waiver) coverage. If you rent a car and decline the agency's CDW, you have no card-based protection for damage or theft to the vehicle. Every repair or replacement cost is entirely your financial responsibility. To protect yourself, either accept the rental agency's CDW waiver (typically $15 to $30 per day) or use a different credit card that includes primary or secondary rental car insurance.
  • The Citi Strata card has no insurance benefits to file claims against. There is no trip cancellation, trip delay, emergency medical, rental CDW, or purchase protection claims process. For Mastercard ID Theft Protection, contact 1-800-627-8372 or visit mastercardus.idprotectiononline.com. For a lost or stolen card, call Mastercard Global Service at 1-800-627-8372 or collect at +1-636-722-7111 from outside the US.
  • The Citi Strata covers nothing from a travel or purchase insurance perspective. No trip cancellation, no trip delay reimbursement, no emergency medical coverage abroad, no emergency evacuation, no rental car CDW, no lost luggage, no baggage delay, no travel accident insurance, no purchase protection, no extended warranty, no cell phone protection. The only protection benefit is Mastercard ID Theft Protection, which is a monitoring and resolution service, not financial reimbursement. This is an entry-level rewards card. Budget for travel insurance separately.
  • No. The Citi Strata card does not include emergency medical coverage abroad. Mastercard Global Service provides 24/7 referrals to local doctors and hospitals, but it does not pay for any medical costs. Every hospital bill abroad is entirely the cardholder's financial responsibility. A single emergency room visit in Europe or Japan can cost $10,000 to $80,000. If you travel internationally, purchase a standalone travel medical insurance policy covering at least $100,000 per person before your trip.
  • No. The Citi Strata does not include any international travel insurance. No emergency medical, no emergency evacuation, no trip cancellation, no trip delay, no lost luggage coverage exists on this card. For any international travel, purchase a standalone travel insurance policy that includes at minimum $100,000 in emergency medical coverage per person. Annual multi-trip travel insurance plans start around $100 to $200 per year for healthy adults.
  • No. Cell phone protection is not included with the Citi Strata card. Theft or accidental damage to your cell phone is not covered. Replacing a flagship smartphone out-of-pocket costs $800 to $1,300. If cell phone protection matters to you, consider a card that includes this benefit, typically requiring you to charge your monthly wireless bill to the card.
  • No. The Citi Strata does not include purchase protection of any kind. Items bought with this card have no coverage against theft or accidental damage after purchase. There is also no extended warranty and no return protection. The card includes Mastercard ID Theft Protection, which monitors your personal information and provides resolution services if your identity is stolen, but that is not the same as purchase protection.
