Our opinion on Discover it Miles Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

No travel insurance. None. Discover eliminated every cardholder protection on February 27, 2018. So, you book a $3,000 trip to Europe, charge the airfare to earn the 1.5x miles, and your flight gets canceled for a covered medical reason. Not a dollar comes back through this card. Standalone travel insurance covers emergency medical from $100,000 per person and trip cancellation from $1,500. If you're evaluating Discover it Miles travel card benefits for international travel, this card leaves every risk uncovered.

What works on travel
  • $0 annual fee: no cost to carry the card, even with zero travel insurance benefits
  • $0 foreign transaction fee: no added cost when spending abroad on flights or hotels
  • 1.5x miles on travel purchases: rewards accumulate even though no insurance protection is included
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation: prepaid flights, hotels, and tours are fully at risk if you cancel for any reason
  • No emergency medical coverage: a single ER visit abroad runs $10,000 to $80,000, all at your expense
  • No emergency evacuation: air ambulance from a remote destination can exceed $200,000 with no card coverage
  • No trip delay or baggage coverage: meals, lodging, and lost bag replacement are entirely out of pocket
  • All protections eliminated February 27, 2018: no partial coverage exists, no workaround is available

FAQ

What people ask about the Discover it Miles

  • The Discover it Miles does not include travel insurance benefits. Discover eliminated all cardholder protections in February 2018, so there is nothing to activate on the travel side. The card's active benefits, including SSN dark web monitoring and the 1.5x miles rewards program, apply automatically to your account. For travel-specific protections like trip cancellation or rental car coverage, you would need a separate travel insurance policy or a different card that still carries those benefits.
  • The Discover it Miles carries no travel insurance, so there are no beneficiary definitions for trip cancellation, emergency medical, or rental car protection. The SSN dark web monitoring and FICO Score access apply to the primary cardholder only. The 1.5x miles rewards program covers all eligible purchases made by the primary cardholder. There are no per-trip covered persons definitions because no insurance coverage exists on this card.
  • No. The Discover it Miles does not include collision damage waiver (CDW) coverage of any kind. Discover removed this benefit in February 2018. If you rent a car and decline the rental agency's CDW, you have no card-based protection: any collision, theft, or damage to the vehicle is your full financial responsibility. A total loss on a standard rental car typically costs $25,000 to $50,000. If rental car coverage matters to you, use a card that explicitly includes primary or secondary CDW.
  • There are no travel insurance or purchase protection claims to file with the Discover it Miles. The card carries no trip cancellation, medical, rental car, or baggage benefits. For any account issue, fraud dispute, or rewards inquiry, contact Discover directly at 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-347-2683), available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For international calls, use the collect number at +1-801-902-3100. Identity monitoring alerts should also be directed to Discover customer service.
  • The Discover it Miles covers very little beyond rewards and basic account features. There is no trip cancellation, no emergency medical expenses abroad, no emergency evacuation, no trip delay reimbursement, no rental car CDW, no purchase protection, no extended warranty, no cell phone protection, and no baggage coverage of any kind. Discover eliminated all cardholder travel and purchase protections on February 27, 2018. The only active benefit beyond rewards is SSN dark web monitoring and new account alerts. A standalone travel insurance policy is required for any meaningful coverage on an international trip.
  • The Discover it Miles is built around travel rewards, not travel insurance. The card earns 1.5x miles on every purchase, and Discover automatically doubles all miles earned in your first year, reaching an effective 3x rate with no spending cap. Miles redeem at 100 miles to $1 as a statement credit against any travel purchase, including airfare, hotels, rideshares, and restaurants. There are no travel insurance benefits: no trip cancellation, no emergency medical, no rental car coverage, and no baggage protection. The card also charges no foreign transaction fee, which reduces the cost of spending abroad.
  • No. The Discover it Miles does not include cell phone protection. Theft, accidental damage, or screen repair to your phone is not covered regardless of whether you pay your monthly bill with this card. Discover eliminated device protection along with all other cardholder benefits in February 2018. Replacing a flagship smartphone typically costs $800 to $1,300 out of pocket. If cell phone protection matters, consider cards that specifically include this benefit, typically with a monthly bill payment requirement and a deductible of $50 or less.
  • No. The Discover it Miles provides no travel insurance of any kind, making it insufficient as standalone coverage for international trips. There is no emergency medical coverage, which is the most critical gap: a single ER visit abroad averages $10,000 to $80,000, and a medical evacuation can exceed $200,000. There is also no trip cancellation, no rental car protection, and no baggage coverage. The 1.5x miles on all purchases is a genuine rewards strength. For international travel, pair this card with a dedicated travel insurance policy, or use it only for domestic everyday spending.
