Our take on travel insurance for the Home Trust Home Trust Preferred Visa

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Here is the short version: the Home Trust Preferred Visa carries no travel insurance at all. No emergency medical, no trip cancellation, no flight or baggage delay, no travel accident. Your provincial health plan (RAMQ in Quebec, OHIP in Ontario) pays almost nothing for emergency care outside Canada, so a single overseas hospital visit lands entirely on you. The card's real travel advantage is the absence of foreign transaction fees, which saves the usual 2.5% currency markup. That is a fee perk, not insurance. If you travel internationally, a standalone travel medical policy is what fills this gap.

What works on travel
  • No foreign transaction fees: you avoid the usual 2.5% currency markup on purchases abroad
Where travel breaks down
  • No emergency medical coverage abroad: a foreign ER bill is entirely out of pocket
  • No trip cancellation or trip interruption coverage
  • No flight delay, baggage delay, or lost baggage coverage
  • No travel accident (AD&D, accidental death and dismemberment) coverage

Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

What does Home Trust Home Trust Preferred Visa Travel Insurance actually cover?

Trip cancellation reimburses prepaid, non-refundable travel costs when you have to cancel before departure for a covered reason such as illness or a death in the family. The Home Trust Preferred Visa does not include it. If you book non-refundable flights or hotels, a standalone policy covers this from a few dollars a day.

Emergency medical abroad pays for a hospital stay, doctor, or ambulance when you fall ill or get hurt outside your province. This card has none. Provincial plans like RAMQ and OHIP cover almost nothing across the border, so a single ER visit in the US can run tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket. A standalone travel medical policy is the fix.

Medical evacuation pays to move you to an adequate hospital, or back home, after a serious emergency abroad. Not covered here. An air ambulance from a remote area can exceed $100,000, all on you without separate coverage.

Trip interruption covers the unused, non-refundable part of a trip and the extra fare home when a covered emergency cuts your trip short. The card does not include it.

Trip delay reimburses meals and a hotel when your flight is held up past a set number of hours. Not on this card. Airlines are not required to cover an overnight stay for weather delays, so that cost is yours.

Missed connection covers the extra cost when a delay makes you miss a connecting flight, train, or cruise. The Home Trust Preferred Visa does not include it.

Early return covers the fare to get home early for a covered emergency, such as a death in the family. Not covered here.

Baggage delay reimburses essentials like clothes and toiletries when your checked bag arrives late by a set number of hours. The card does not include it.

Lost or stolen baggage covers your bags and their contents when the airline loses or damages them. Not on this card.

Travel accident insurance pays a lump sum for death or serious injury while you travel on a common carrier such as a plane, train, or bus. The Home Trust Preferred Visa does not include it.

Hotel theft covers belongings stolen from your room during a trip. Not covered here.

FAQ

What people ask about the Home Trust Home Trust Preferred Visa

  • No. The Home Trust Preferred Visa carries no travel insurance. There is no emergency medical, no trip cancellation or interruption, no flight or baggage delay, and no travel accident coverage. Its one travel-related advantage is the absence of foreign transaction fees, which saves the usual 2.5% currency markup on purchases abroad. That is a fee perk, not insurance. If you are travelling outside your province, a standalone travel medical policy would fill this gap, since provincial health plans cover almost nothing outside Canada.
  • One benefit: Purchase Security. Eligible items charged in full to the card are insured against theft or direct physical damage for 90 days from purchase, anywhere in the world, up to $5,000 per occurrence. Chubb Insurance Company of Canada underwrites it (Policy 9908-8631). The coverage is supplementary, meaning it pays only for what your home or other insurance does not. Visa Zero Liability also protects you from unauthorized transactions, though that is a network policy rather than a card insurance benefit. There is no extended warranty, no mobile device coverage, and no rental car protection.
  • No. The card has no rental car collision damage waiver (CDW, the rental damage cover built into many travel cards), no rental liability, and no roadside assistance. If you decline the rental company's coverage at the counter and charge the rental to this card, you are not protected. To skip the counter upsell, you would need a card that includes primary CDW or a separate rental insurance policy.
  • Report the loss within 48 hours by calling Crawford & Company (Canada) Inc. at 877-757-7971 (toll-free) or 416-649-6444 (local). They administer Purchase Security claims for Chubb. Submit your claim with documentation within 30 days of the loss: the original receipt, the card statement showing the purchase, and your homeowner's policy showing any deductible, since this coverage is supplementary. For damage, add a repair estimate and photos; for theft, add the police report. Send it to visanac@crawco.ca, quoting Policy 9908-8631.
  • No. The Home Trust Preferred Visa charges no foreign transaction fee, so purchases in any currency avoid the 2.5% markup most Canadian cards add. The trade-off: you do not earn the 1% cash back on foreign-currency purchases. For online shopping in US dollars or spending while abroad, this fee waiver is the card's main draw.
  • No annual fee, and no fee for additional cards. There is one cost to watch: a $12 inactivity fee applies if you do not make at least one purchase during any 12 consecutive months. The purchase interest rate is 21.99%, the same as the cash advance rate. For a card kept mainly for fee-free foreign spending, one small purchase a year avoids the inactivity charge.
  • No. There is no extended warranty and no mobile device or cell phone insurance on this card. The only protection benefit is Purchase Security, which covers theft or direct physical damage for 90 days after purchase, up to $5,000 per occurrence. If you want extended warranty or phone coverage built into a card, this is not the one for it.
  • Chubb Insurance Company of Canada underwrites the Purchase Security benefit under Policy 9908-8631, and Home Trust Company issues the card. Claims are handled by the administrator, Crawford & Company (Canada) Inc., reachable at 877-757-7971. Complaints go to Chubb at 1-877-534-3655, and then to the General Insurance OmbudService if unresolved. Full terms are in the Certificate of Insurance provided with the card.
