Personal accident is a lump sum paid for accidental death or permanent disablement. On a public conveyance (a scheduled flight, ferry, train or bus you pay to ride) the Amex Platinum Charge pays S$1,000,000 for death, total disablement or loss of two limbs or eyes, and S$500,000 for loss of a single limb or eye. Off public transport, a general travel accident pays S$100,000. The cardmember, spouse and dependent children are each covered, and Chubb also pays off the card's outstanding balance if a benefit is due.

Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the American Express Platinum Charge
For a credit card, this is genuinely strong complimentary cover. The American Express Platinum Charge travel insurance, underwritten by Chubb, pays real overseas medical treatment plus emergency evacuation and repatriation up to a shared S$1,000,000 Section 4 aggregate, alongside S$1,000,000 personal accident on a scheduled flight, ferry or train. It goes well beyond the thin accident certificates most cards offer: trip cancellation and curtailment up to S$10,000 each, baggage up to S$12,500, a short 4-hour flight-delay trigger, and personal liability up to S$1,000,000 are all included. Cover switches on automatically when you charge the outbound and return travel fare to the card, with no separate opt-in form to submit. The honest caveats matter too: pre-existing conditions are excluded, the delay and disruption caps are modest at S$400 per person, every claim carries a S$150 minimum, and the benefits are tied to fares actually charged to the card. And the card itself costs S$1,744 a year, so you are not buying this cover cheaply. A standalone Singapore travel policy from around S$20 a trip still adds higher delay and disruption limits and can cover pre-existing conditions this card leaves out.
- Real overseas medical, evacuation and repatriation up to a shared S$1,000,000 Section 4 aggregate, arranged by Chubb's 24-hour assistance agent
- S$1,000,000 personal accident on a scheduled public conveyance, plus S$100,000 for a general travel accident, covering spouse and dependent children
- Trip cancellation and curtailment up to S$10,000 each, baggage up to S$12,500, and personal liability up to S$1,000,000
- Cover activates automatically when the travel fare is charged to the card, with a 4-hour flight-delay trigger and no opt-in form
- S$1,744 annual fee: this is one of the most expensive cards in Singapore, and the cover only makes sense alongside the card's other perks
- Pre-existing conditions and Special Sports such as mountaineering and motor racing are excluded
- Delay, missed-connection and disruption caps are modest at S$400 per person, and every claim carries a S$150 minimum
- Cover is tied to fares charged to the card: book a trip where no travel fare hits the card and you may travel uninsured

- S$100,000 for a general travel accident off public transport

If you have an accident or fall ill overseas, Chubb's appointed assistance agent arranges and pays for necessary in-hospital medical or surgical treatment, transport to hospital, and travel home after discharge. There is no separate medical sub-limit: overseas medical costs sit under the overall Section 4 aggregate of S$1,000,000 per person. This matters because MediShield Life does not cover overseas leisure treatment, and a serious hospital admission in the US or Europe can run past S$100,000. Costs must be approved in advance and charged to the card.
- Necessary in-hospital medical and surgical treatment overseas
- Transport to hospital and travel home after discharge, with a medical escort if needed
- Hospital cash of S$150 a day and a friend or relative's visit if you are hospitalised alone
- Pre-existing conditions
- Treatment that can reasonably wait until you return to Singapore, or was planned before the trip
- Sexually transmitted diseases and HIV-related illness, and claims under S$150
If you need to be moved to a suitable hospital or flown back to Singapore, Chubb's 24-hour assistance agent arranges and pays for the transfer, including a medical escort where needed. An air ambulance from Bali or Bangkok back to Singapore commonly runs S$50,000 to S$120,000, so this is real protection. Repatriation of remains up to S$4,000 and search and rescue up to S$100,000 are also included. All of it shares the Section 4 aggregate of S$1,000,000 per person.
- Emergency transfer to a suitable hospital and travel home with a medical escort
- Repatriation of remains up to S$4,000
- Search and rescue up to S$100,000

- Pre-existing conditions

Emergency dental treatment overseas to relieve pain or suffering, provided by a registered dental practitioner, up to S$4,000 per Specified Period (a 12-month card year). - S$150 for each day hospitalised as an in-patient overseas
- Up to a maximum of 10 days
- Days after Chubb's medical advisor says you can return to Singapore
If you cancel, postpone or change your trip because you, a travel companion or a close relative has an accident or falls ill before departure, or you are called for jury service or subpoenaed as a witness, Chubb reimburses non-refundable prepaid travel, accommodation, excursions and leisure costs up to S$10,000. If you miss your flight because of an accident, a vehicle breakdown, or the breakdown or cancellation of public transport, and no alternative flight is available within 4 hours, Chubb reimburses additional travel, refreshment and accommodation costs up to S$400 per person and S$800 per family. The cap is small, designed for meals and a night while you wait, not a full re-routing.
- Additional travel, refreshment and accommodation before departure
- Triggered when no alternative flight is available within 4 hours
- Where the airline offered alternative arrangements that were refused
- Private charter flights where you are the only passengers
- Claims where no costs were incurred
If your flight is delayed, cancelled or overbooked and no alternative flight is available within 4 hours, Chubb reimburses additional travel, refreshment and accommodation costs up to S$400 per person and S$800 per family. The 4-hour trigger is among the shortest in the market, though the S$400 payout is modest.

If your personal belongings are lost, stolen or damaged during a trip, Chubb reimburses the replacement or repair cost up to S$1,500 per item or set, and up to S$1,500 in total for valuables such as jewellery and watches. The overall baggage limit is S$12,500 per person per trip. Loss or theft must be reported to the police or carrier within 48 hours.

Chubb appoints and pays a lawyer, covers legal costs up to S$25,000, and pays compensation awarded against you up to S$1,000,000 per accident. Personal liability claims commonly reach hundreds of thousands of dollars, so this is meaningful cover that many card policies leave out.

- Legal costs to defend the action up to S$25,000

How to make an Amex Platinum Charge travel insurance claim
Step 1: Notify Chubb as soon as possible
Start your claim with Chubb within the notice period in the certificate, commonly 30 days of the incident. Only expenses charged to the Amex Platinum Charge can be reimbursed where the benefit requires the fare to be charged to the card.
Step 2: Gather the proof Chubb needs
Keep the card statement showing the fare was charged, your boarding passes, and for a medical claim the doctor's report and receipts. For delayed or lost baggage, get a Property Irregularity Report from the airline before leaving the airport; for theft, file a police report within 24 hours.
Step 3: Escalate to FIDReC if a fair claim is denied
If Chubb rejects a claim you believe is valid, escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, within 6 months of the insurer's final reply. FIDReC independently mediates disputes between consumers and financial institutions in Singapore.
What people ask about the American Express Platinum Charge
- The cover applies automatically and complimentary as an American Express Platinum Charge cardmember, but there is a condition: the travel fare for the outbound and return journey must be charged to the card. There is no separate opt-in form to submit, unlike some Singapore cards. If you book a flight on miles and only the airport taxes hit the card, that may not meet the full-fare condition, so check before you rely on it. Cover extends to your spouse and dependent children on the same qualifying trip. Keep the card statement showing the fare was charged, as Chubb checks this when you claim.
- Yes. If you have an accident or fall ill overseas, Chubb's assistance agent arranges and pays for necessary in-hospital medical or surgical treatment, with no separate medical sub-limit: costs sit under the overall Section 4 aggregate of S$1,000,000 per person. This is real cover, not just an accident lump sum. It matters because MediShield Life does not cover overseas leisure treatment, and a serious admission in the US or Europe can run past S$100,000. Contact Chubb in advance for approval, and note that pre-existing conditions and claims under S$150 are excluded.
- Yes. Chubb's 24-hour assistance agent arranges and pays to move you to a suitable hospital or fly you home to Singapore, with a medical escort where needed, sharing the Section 4 aggregate of S$1,000,000 per person. This is the benefit that pays for an air ambulance, which from Bali or Bangkok back to Singapore commonly runs S$50,000 to S$120,000. Repatriation of remains up to S$4,000 and search and rescue up to S$100,000 are also included. Call the assistance agent before any evacuation is arranged, because prior approval is a condition of payment.
- The policy wording does not name COVID-19 anywhere, and the general exclusions do not list epidemics or pandemics. On that basis, an overseas COVID illness is treated like any other illness, so overseas medical treatment and a cancellation caused by falling ill with COVID before the trip would generally be assessed as normal claims, subject to a doctor's certificate. Pre-existing conditions stay excluded. This is a card-specific reading: several Singapore card policies exclude COVID-19 outright, so never assume the position carries from one card to another. If COVID cover is important, confirm the current stance with Chubb before you travel.
- Personal accident is a lump sum paid for accidental death or permanent disablement. On a scheduled public conveyance, meaning a flight, ferry, train or bus you pay to ride (a common carrier), the card pays S$1,000,000 for death, total disablement or loss of two limbs or eyes, and S$500,000 for a single limb or eye. Off public transport, a general travel accident pays S$100,000. The cardmember, spouse and dependent children are each covered, and Chubb also pays off the card's outstanding balance if a benefit is due. It is a headline accident sum, separate from the overseas medical benefit you would actually claim on for an illness.
- Yes. The same S$10,000 applies to trip curtailment if you have to cut a trip short, plus reasonable travel costs to return home. You need a doctor's medical certificate for illness claims, the costs must have been charged to the card, and pre-existing conditions and anything known before booking are excluded.
- Claims are handled by Chubb Insurance Singapore, the underwriter. Submit online at the Chubb Amex claims centre or call +65 6299 0922 for claims enquiries, and for a medical emergency contact the assistance agent before any treatment or evacuation is arranged. File as soon as practicable and in any event within 30 days of the incident, with the supporting documents: itemised medical bills, police or carrier reports, unused tickets, and the card statement showing the travel fare was charged. If Chubb denies a claim and you disagree, you can escalate free of charge to FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, which handles disputes between consumers and financial institutions in Singapore.
- Cover runs for the duration of a covered trip, up to a maximum of 180 consecutive days per trip, or 240 days cumulatively within a 12-month Specified Period. After the 181st day of a single trip, you are no longer covered. There is a wider extension for a dependent child aged 16 or above travelling purely for leisure, whose cover can run up to 365 consecutive days, provided their travel fare was charged to the card. For a longer stay than these limits, you would need a separate long-stay or expat policy.
- For most travellers this card's cover is strong enough to lean on, but there are real gaps to weigh. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, the flight-delay, missed-connection and disruption caps are modest at S$400 per person, and every claim carries a S$150 minimum. If you travel with a managed medical condition, want higher delay and disruption limits, or plan a trip longer than 180 days, a standalone Singapore travel policy from around S$20 a trip fills those gaps. Think of the card as a strong base for overseas medical, evacuation, cancellation and baggage, topped up by a standalone policy where its limits or exclusions leave you short.
