Our opinion on AAA Travel Advantage Travel Insurance

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

No trip cancellation. No emergency medical. No evacuation. The AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature's travel benefit is a referral service: the 24/7 assistance line at 1-800-992-6029 can connect you with local doctors, lawyers, and emergency contacts, but pays for none of it. A single ER visit in Japan averages $15,000 to $60,000. Standalone travel insurance starts at $100,000 per person in emergency medical coverage for international trips. If you are leaving the country without separate health coverage, this card provides no financial protection.

What works on travel
  • Travel and Emergency Assistance available 24/7 at 1-800-992-6029: referral support worldwide for medical, legal, and logistics
  • No annual fee: zero trade-off between cost and coverage
Where travel breaks down
  • No trip cancellation: non-refundable flights and hotels are at your expense if you cancel for any reason
  • No emergency medical: every hospital bill abroad is your full responsibility
  • No evacuation coverage: emergency air transport can exceed $200,000 and this card covers none of it
  • No trip delay or interruption: meals, lodging, and rebooking costs during a delay are out of pocket

What does AAA Travel Advantage Travel Insurance actually cover?

Quality, not just caps

No trip cancellation exists on this card. A $2,000 non-refundable trip is entirely at your expense if you cancel, regardless of the reason.

No trip cancellation coverage. This benefit is not included with this card. Prepaid flights, hotels, and tours are not reimbursable if you cancel. A standalone travel insurance policy is required for this coverage.

No emergency medical insurance on this card. Every dollar of any hospital bill abroad is yours. A serious ER visit in Italy or Japan runs $20,000 to $80,000.

No emergency medical coverage. Travel and Emergency Assistance provides referrals only. All medical costs abroad are the cardholder's responsibility. A single ER visit in Japan or Europe typically runs $10,000 to $80,000.

No evacuation coverage. The assistance line arranges but does not pay. An air ambulance from remote Asia or Latin America runs $150,000 to $300,000.

No emergency evacuation or repatriation benefit. Travel and Emergency Assistance can help arrange logistics, but all transportation costs are the cardholder's responsibility. Emergency transportation costs are entirely the cardholder's responsibility. A transoceanic air ambulance from Southeast Asia runs $200,000 to $300,000.

No trip interruption coverage. This benefit is not included with this card. Costs from a trip cut short, including return flights and unused hotels, are out of pocket.

No trip delay reimbursement. This benefit is not included with this card. Meals, lodging, and transportation during a delay are the cardholder's responsibility.

No missed connection coverage. This benefit is not included with this card. If a delayed inbound flight causes you to miss a connection, rebooking costs and expenses are not covered. Last-minute rebooking on a missed international connection can cost $300 to $800.

No early return benefit. This benefit is not included with this card. Additional transportation costs from cutting a trip short are not reimbursed. A last-minute one-way flight home can cost $800 to $2,000.

No baggage delay reimbursement. This benefit is not included with this card. Purchases of essential items during a bag delay are out of pocket. A 48-hour delay can require $300 to $500 in essential purchases.

No lost or stolen baggage coverage. This benefit is not included with this card. If your luggage is permanently lost or stolen in transit, the airline's liability limit applies ($3,700 domestic, $1,900 international). Replacement costs above the airline's cap are entirely the cardholder's responsibility.

No travel accident insurance. This benefit is not included with this card. No lump-sum payment in the event of death or dismemberment on a covered trip.

No hotel theft protection. This benefit is not included with this card. Personal belongings stolen from your hotel room are not covered. Electronics and valuables left in a hotel room can total $1,000 to $3,000 with no recourse if stolen.

Good rewards, but no travel insurance to rely on

The 5% on gas capped at $350 but still the best no-fee return I can get on a fill-up. 3% on groceries and travel fills in the rest. No foreign transaction fees saved me money on a trip to Mexico.

Card declined twice abroad despite travel notice

Called Comenity ahead of a Europe trip to flag travel dates. The card still declined twice at the hotel. The agent could see the transaction but could not explain the decline. Had to scramble for a backup card. Reliability is the real issue with this card.

FAQ

What people ask about the AAA Travel Advantage

  • The AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature does not include travel insurance benefits. The card provides Travel and Emergency Assistance Services, available 24/7 at 1-800-992-6029 in the US or collect at 1-804-673-1675 from abroad. These services connect you with local doctors, lawyers, and emergency resources, but all costs are your responsibility. No enrollment or pre-registration is required to access the referral services.
  • Travel and Emergency Assistance Services are available to the primary cardholder, their spouse, and dependent children under 22 years old traveling together. These services provide referrals and coordination only, not financial coverage for any costs incurred. For specific eligibility questions, contact Comenity Capital Bank at 1-855-546-9552.
  • The official AAA benefit page at finance.aaa.com/credit-card/visa-benefits does not list collision damage waiver (CDW) among the card's benefits. However, some cardholders have reported successful reimbursement for rental car damage — particularly outside the US where the Visa Signature CDW may apply as primary coverage, meaning your personal auto insurance is not contacted. This coverage is not confirmed in the official documentation. Before declining CDW at the rental counter, call Comenity Capital Bank at 1-855-546-9552 to verify whether Visa Signature CDW applies to your card.
  • The AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature does not provide insurance benefits that can be claimed for reimbursement. The card's Travel and Emergency Assistance is referral-only: it connects you with providers but does not reimburse expenses. For assistance while traveling, call 1-800-992-6029 in the US or 1-804-673-1675 collect from abroad. For account or billing issues, contact Comenity Capital Bank at 1-855-546-9552.
  • The AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature does not cover trip cancellation, trip interruption, travel delays, emergency medical expenses abroad, or medical evacuation. Rental car collision damage waiver is not listed on the official AAA benefit page — some cardholders report coverage outside the US, but this is unconfirmed. Purchase protection, extended warranty, and cell phone protection are also not included. The card's travel benefit is limited to a 24/7 referral service, with all actual costs remaining the cardholder's responsibility.
  • No. The AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature does not include emergency medical coverage. The 24/7 Travel and Emergency Assistance line at 1-800-992-6029 can help locate English-speaking doctors and medical facilities abroad, but every medical expense is your responsibility. A single ER visit in Western Europe averages $3,000 to $15,000. A hospitalization can exceed $30,000. If you travel internationally, a standalone travel insurance policy with medical benefits is necessary.
  • No. Cell phone protection is not listed among the benefits on the official AAA Visa benefit page at finance.aaa.com/credit-card/visa-benefits. Screen repairs and device replacements are your full responsibility. Flagship smartphone screen repair typically costs $150 to $500, and full device replacement runs $800 to $1,300. Several no-annual-fee cards from other issuers include cell phone protection by requiring you to pay your monthly phone bill with the card.
  • No. The card does not include trip cancellation, emergency medical, or evacuation coverage. Rental car CDW is not confirmed on the official benefit listing, though some cardholders report it works as primary coverage outside the US — verify with Comenity Capital Bank at 1-855-546-9552 before relying on it. For any international trip, a standalone travel insurance policy is necessary to cover medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and evacuation costs. The card's 3% on travel purchases and no foreign transaction fee make it useful for spending abroad, but it provides no guaranteed financial protection if something goes wrong.
